Being a mother I really resonated with the message of Ideon. I was the victim of so many dark things, and yet having kids of my own is my chance to contribute to a better future, foster my own contribution to a better generation and prevent them from making the mistakes I made and mistakes that the people around me have made in the past. The next generation always has that chance to make things right.
The ending is somewhat key notes from Char's Counter Attack. Its pretentious because it doesn't doesn't matter if you understood it or not or what they've learned: they are all dead. As the story implied, this isn't the first time a large scale war over the mcguffin occurred and they failed to learn what THAT generation had to teach with their own deaths. I kinda chuckled when first seeing it. Its like in Star Wars when a Jedi or Sith dies they suddenly gain massive wisdom and power that matters little because they are in the dirt. (Or space dust in this case).
You've made me want to have a re-watch of Ideon with this. My first time going through 'Be Invoked' I found the ending to be surprisingly upbeat (probably because I'd watched Devilman Crybaby around the same time), but you raise some damn good points here. "Maybe things will be better next time (if we don't cock it up)" is hardly a cheerful note to close on, after all.
I thought the same at first. Rewatching things usually make me feel the same as I did before, but “Be Invoked” was so different. Never felt so much dread watching something ever lol. Really glad you enjoyed the vid
He finally did it! I was looking forward to video and so happy you did such a great job on it. I also felt an immense amount of dread during and after “Be Invoked” and remember trying to go to bed afterwards but literally couldn’t because of how much it was stuck in my mind. I think the most terrifying part of the show is not so much the fact that everyone died at the end(I knew everyone would die before I started) but as the story progresses more and more, the more the tragedy became inevitable. It’s that inevitably that scares me so much because despite all the characters acting on their own free will and having the ability to change their actions, they all make decisions that lead to destruction. In this story, everyone, including the heroes, is responsible for the tragedy which I think is a vital lesson everyone needs to know. Instead of blaming our suffering and the worlds problems on the actions of bad people, let’s acknowledge how we are all responsible for the evil in this world and then maybe we can start to get somewhere Ideon is a very special work to me because it is the very first Tomino production I’ve ever saw and it’s had the biggest impression on me besides 0079. I never really was into Gundam before before and the only reason I watched it was because people were comparing it to Evangelion which I was obsessed with at the time. Ideon then lead me to 0079 and soon enough Tomino had become my favorite anime director, Miyazaki and Anno being close seconds. I’d be interested in hearing what you have to say Tomino’s other non Gundam titles from the 80s.
We had the same experience, I couldn't sleep that night, it's such a powerful ending and nothing really compares to it. You can watch a million things and there's nothing that gets close to what it feels to consume this show for the first time!
I remembered you were looking forward to an Ideon video. I'm glad I lived up to your expectations! I'm really looking forward to talking about more of Tomino's other works
This is the first analysis of this kind I've seen that just purely enjoyed the subject matter instead of going on tangents about how everything else is trash.
Story of M.A.D with no punches being held back. There is the one part in ideon where the ideon teleports karla to her father, as if it was trying to show they can co-exist a last ditch effort to get both side to understand before fully giving up and ending it all
If anything, the impression I get from a lot of Tomino's works is "old people with power suck", and I'm inclined to agree. I say this as a middle-aged person - people past middle age shouldn't be allowed to have political power. They can provide advice to younger decision-makers based on their experiences, but they shouldn't be the ones making the final decisions. They are all too often too deeply set in their ways to learn from their mistakes...and that's doubly so when their power shields them from consequences.
Absolute amazing vid i just watched ideon for the first time last year usually im not the biggest mec guy but this show changed my whole perspective especially after the movie i immediately went to go to try to buy a copy but sadly its completely out of print just trying to find a copy was near impossible cheapest one ive found was 500. I also want to thank you cheems for putting light on this masterpiece
I rewatched the ending of Be Invoked recently and it felt so much harder to watch than when I first watched it last year. Mainly because metaphor tends to go over my head and I didn't understand at the time that it was an allegory for M.A.D. What a shame that there is no Messiah, no cosmic afterworld, no souls flying off to inhabit a new world with no animosity. And what a shame that it took everyone to die to finally understand each other.
While I do love Cosmo, I don’t really classify him as the main character of Ideon. He isn’t super relevant through most of it and as a result it lets the rest of the crew shine. I still think this is the only Tomino show that truly captured the "everybody on the crew is the main character" aspect so well. You raise good points, but maybe I'm just stubborn with seeing things from a bright and hopeful side. The ending is just too beautiful in spite of how much of a meatgrinder everything proceeding it was. Perhaps the next Generation fails, but someone will succeed. Nobody ever wonders what happens to the Ideon after that generation succeeds. Would it wait around for the later generation to resume the fighting? Possible. Or maybe it rots away, and its influence will vanish, even if conflict will go on. I could be wrong, but I'm only human.
The reason why war will always be a thing is because human beings harbor an insatiable desire to belong. To belong means to be important, accepted and relevant. That last being our grappling with mortality against the infinite and unknown. It sounds like a harmless need, but it manifests in humans in the idea that it is impossible to belong if we all belong. Think of it like a sports team. No one walks around with a shirt that says “I love the NFL” they walk around a shirt that says “go New York giants.” See, if everyone played on the same sports team, there would be no “us” to unite against “them”. Therefore, the absence of an opponent in “them” means there can exist no team. People have nothing to rally around if there is no one to oppose them. And if they can’t do that, they won’t feel like a part of anything. They don’t belong. Add to that the fact that governments, especially conservative governments, want their populations to be ultra patriot nationalists. Conservatives believe the world is out to get them, and add that to a government movement of raising children on a pledge of allegiance before they’ve seen the world, and you’ve got generations of humans who are bred to believe they can only belong among their own kind. At the end of the day humanity will destroy itself because so many people don’t understand that everyone can win, and instead grow up with the idea that the only for me to win, the only way for me to belong and the only way that is right, is if you lose, you are the enemy and you are wrong.

Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn't go on
Then the door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew and then disappeared
The curtains flew and then he appeared
Saying don't be afraid
Come on, baby (and she had no fear)
And she ran to him (then they started to fly)
They looked backward and said goodbye (she had become like they are)
She had taken his hand (she had become like they are)
Come on, baby (don't fear the reaper)
