I'm a sucker for endings that leave things ambiguous, that last shot of Akechi is chilling. I don't think it really matters whether he lived or died, but it's neat that they decided to leave his fate up to interpretation.
I love Kasumi's character plot and arc, though I do wish she was more available before the actual end of the game. Part of me does wonder, if they'd kept the idea of her being the playable female protagonist like Kotone was, what we would have seen. P3P's alternative story was very well done and quite enjoyable, and I'd like to see it done in the new engine, not stripped down for a handheld.
Imagine if P5R did have an anime like P4GA, that as Maruki's palace starts disappearing, Akechi starts remembering his death, and as he dies, he tells Sumire "Yoshizawa-San, you and Ren, make a good couple, do you think?" Then fast forward to Valentines Day, as Ren was hanging out with Ryuji and Yusuke, Sumire showed up unannounced, asking for Ren, then Sojiro dragged Ryuji and Yusuke out with Morgana, in which there's Sumire confessed to Ren Amamiya/Joker, saying "I love you," and Ren said "I love you too Sumire," and Sumire hugged & caressed him, not knowing that Ann & the other romance options were watching from outside, who then left. After that, Sumire asked Joker to come with her to the same place Kasumi died, in which Sumire took off her red ribbon and tied to a nearby lamppost. Then the next day, the remaining 9 girls showed up at Leblanc to beat up Joker like they did in the original anime (perhaps this time Sae joins)
It was supposed to have the bittersweet feeling to it. While the OG ending want to show us that the phantom thieves are free from their unjust faith, Royal ending on the other hand want to show us that nothing is perfect in this world and we have to continue moving forward not matter how bad it get.

That sounds like an interesting idea, but I doubt they'd do it. And even if they did I don't trust that the animation quality would be good.

As much as I like persona 5 royal, that ending was the worst ending. Should of had him drive off with everyone like in the original.
