I too am 73 and also watched Sky King as a kid with one important difference. My father, who was in WWII in the Army Air-force always wanted to learn how to fly. When I was around 7yrs. old, he started taking flying lessons and I use to go along which I could do, as long as there was an FAA instructor along as well. Of course, once he got his license, we would fly every place instead of driving on trips. So in a way I was living the Sky King story in real life. Well, at least the flying part, without all the drama! ;-)
@@IanWolf-de8vh That's a very nice story about you and your dad sharing nice experiences like that. My dad served aboard a battleship(USS North Carolina) during WW2 but never spoke about his experiences. I grew up wanting to serve in the Navy on subs or in the underwater demolition team(UDT). One series that I always watched on TV during the 50s was 'The Silent Service'. I wound up in the Army in the late 1960s.
@@videomaniac108 That’s interesting. My older brother also ended up joining the Army but in the mid 60’s. In fact, Life Magazine was at Fort Knox doing a story on the Draft when my brother was lined up with the other new recruits and they took a picture that ended up on the cover of the magazine in August 20th of 1965, if I’m remembering correctly. He was on the right side with the thumb of his hand in his gene pocket and a lit cigarette in the other hand. I mean, what are the chances of going and joining the Army and ending up on the cover of Life Magazine!
@@IanWolf-de8vh Things had changed in the Army by the time I got there, with poor morale and widespread drug use. My last duty station in the US before the expiration of my term of service was at Ft. Jackson, SC in early 1970. There was a GI Coffee house called the UFO that was the first of numerous ones in towns outside major military installations. The military considered them subversive organizations and declared them off limits. Of course, that made me, and others, want to go there all the more.
I was stationed at Long Beach from '72 to '74. The Pike was a real dump by then, the Cyclone Racer roller coaster had already been torn down to make room for the Queen Mary and a few years later the rest of the park was demolished. It originally opened in 1902.
Saturday mornings, if I remember correctly, it was "Sky King" "Fury", "The Lone Ranger" , "My Friend Flicka" "Roy Rogers" later maybe "Lassie" with Jeff.... ?
@@donnienicholson6062 almost 70 first time seeing we got kicked out of the house on Saturdays...didn't see any of these old series like Fury etc, ,,,Saturdays must of been hungover or adult play time...almost married a gal with a cute overbite like Penny.
I remember watching this episode (in rerun, early 1960s) on a Saturday afternoon. I watched Sky King from time to time, but this is the only episode that ever stuck with me. Sure glad you posted it!
When Mickey visits; trouble follows. I seem to remember there were several times that Mickey came to visit Uncle Sky. Mickey was Sky King's Timmy from Lassie.
the ending was similar to Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train" and Oson Welles' "Lady from Shanghai"... I wonder if they were filmed at the same Amusement Park?
Off the reservation with this episode - in more ways than one. Interesting that it was the final episode of the series. No Sheriff Mitch, no Clipper, and no Chubby. I guess they had already laid those regulars off.
I get a kick out of knowing that Since SKY KING was one of my favorite shows back in the day. i now live about a 1/2 a mile as THE SONGBIRD FLIES from the Flying Crown Ranch and if I get up on my Pool slide I can see the general area that the SONGBIRD took off from which was right across the street from The Flying Crown Ranch and part of the old APPLE VALLEY AIRPORT SMALL WORLD HUH?
Sadly, this is the final episode for SKY KING. Season 4, the final season, ended at 13 Episodes, 7 short of the normal 20-episode Season. Too bad the producers chose to not complete the season. It is a very good episode and at least SKY KING goes out on a high. Gloria Winters was 28 by this season, so her age was making the "Sky and niece Penny" concept harder to build believable stories around I suppose. (Why would a 28 year old niece still be living with her Uncle?) Would have been nice to complete the season, and early in the episode, have Penny leaving to head off to college, get married, or otherwise realistically moving on with her life. While Sky would have been temporarily left alone, the episode could end with Sky heading off into a new positive direction. I never do like a TV series to be left hanging.
Wow, such low production values, crummy writing, cheesy acting with just a smidgen of flying and aircraft to keep the aviation -crazy kids coming back next week. That was me then and me now.
I ran it through an inflation calculator. As of December 31, 2022 (latest info I have inflation data on) $25,000 USD would be worth $257,885.62 USD. Pretty close estimate.
You know, I'm just as cynical too! I replayed the sequence about ten times to spot the stuntman, but it was hard to tell. I think Sky King was a bit chunky for that kind of action. But they did it quite well. In a lot of those old series, the stuntman is 6 inches taller and has red hair! "Aw, it's just for kids..." Cheers, Shirley.
I really enjoyed Sky King as a kid back in the late 50's viewing many of them as they were first showings. I just turned 70 in December. Back then as is now I live in Brooklyn, New York.
you must come from the same area as me.....Fury played right after or before Sky King on Saturday mornings... Peter Graves of Mission Impossible was in Fury..

I grew up with this show. Watched it every week. Loved it so much I became a pilot.
I tuned 70 last year. I remember watching & liking this show a lot when I was a youngster.
Loved it as a kid 71 now.
The Whirlybirds, The Flying Doctor and Sky King (brought to you by NABISCO) shaped my life. Pilot for 55 years.
This is a blast from the past. The chubby cop is actor and poet John Mitchum, Robert’s younger brother.
He was also degeorgio in dirty Harry.
