What killed the dinosaurs?
“ThE iCe AgE!!!”
why are you watching these episodes out of order (production or airing) and why is the actual video (btas) so small compared to what it was????
So I doubt any of you are familiar with the late Michael Ansara He was in a bunch of stuff from the 60's onward. Most notable in my opinion are Kang one of the three featured Klingon Commanders from TOS. And a great detective show Called The Rockford Files where he played a reformed hood called Joey Blue Eyes. Speaking of the Files, Bob Hastings (Commissioner Gordan), Abe Vigoda, and dozens of other actors whom lend their voices to this show worked on The Rockford Files. James Gardner himself played his last role as Zeus in the Wounder Woman animated film.
@@brucechmiel7964 yes they really should look at the voice cast after every episode. Unfortunately they may not know a lot of the people.
This episode won a Daytime Emmy for "Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program".
And rightly fucking so
And completely rewrote the story from Mr freeze in the comics.
Everyone nowdays conplains when a new Batman comes out about how "Is not like the cómic " and these guys Made something original that was so good that Made it to the canon IN THE OWN COMICS
I learned something new today and that is cool to know
Well deserved definitely one of my favorite episodes
One of the best episodes of the series, completely changed Mr. Freeze as a character for the better.
For all intents and purposes, Mr Freeze is the Animated original character.
@@spencersholden It's intents, as in intentions. But yes, you are correct. Mr. Freeze had actually been dropped in the comics altogether at this point.
@@catwhowalksbyhimself And even before then he was just pretty much a generic villain with a ice gimmick.
@@brandonlyon730 Which is why he got dropped in the comics.
Fun fact, he was originally called Mr. Zero. The 60's Batman show renamed him.
I never knew Nora came from this show. I've always known Mr. Freeze as the villain who only did everything to save Nora. Guess this episode is super important but this show was before my time so never watched it
This is the episode that made Mr. Freeze into the villain we know today. Before this he was a joke villain and his wife Nora didn't exist. The episode was so good that this origin story was made canon. Heart of Ice is an excellent name for this episode because, in my opinion, this is where the true Mr. Freeze was born.
And then Arnold made him a joke again.
@@roxtechs DC new 52 also made him into a creepy guy obsessed over a woman he barely knows.
@@roxtechs not really. The puns did but the tragic story was there and done right, just poorly
@@roxtechsThis version of mister Freezer is far more popular than Arnold's, so not really
@CDexie to fans maybe. To casuals, definitely not.
Bruce Timm noted he had difficulty getting Michael Ansara to play it "flat" for the role of Freeze. "He was acting too much. It was really frustrating for him. He had never done cartoons before and an actor's first natural instinct is to act. He kept giving these line readings with all this inflection in them. I kept telling them that it had to be less, a lot less- like a robot. He kept saying it sounded so flat. Everybody else was looking at me too, and was asking me if I was sure. To them it sounded flat. I think it really sells it. I wanted his voice to sound like the Ebonites in that old The Outer Limits (1963) episode: 'Nightmare.' They sound real metallic and hollow. I even played that for him at the recording session, and explained that was what I wanted it to sound like. It drove the sound guys crazy doing it."
Such a great decision. Bruce Timm is an absolute genius
@@TheFiddler69 But then The Killing Joke movie happened.
@@jp3813 if the killing joke didn't involve Barbara at all in the comic then that never would've happened, he's great until you let him anywhere near Batgirl she's his big weakness/flaw.
@@NinjaTyler People generally have no problem w/ anything involving Batgirl in the animated series.
Give some love to Paul Dini, the writer.
Bruce Timm and Paul Dini have gone on record that if they could change one thing about this episode, it would be to have Mr. Freeze's tears turn into snowflakes at the end
Personally, I think that would have been overkill
So Batman and Robin did write him great
@@paulbrown5934 But the character himself said that he can't shed tears anymore.
I recall Batman & Robin also has a scene like that with Arnold crying a tear that freezes and turns to ice dust, i guess they got the inspiration from that statement?
@@jp3813 “I can’t shed tears anymore, [because they get turned into snowflakes].”
Ah, the definitive Mr. Freeze. An absolute banger of an episode in every way.
This episode is widely considered the best individual episode of Batman: The Animated Series. Some fans considered the execution for "Heart of Ice" to be "nearly flawless," with both comic and animation fans appreciating the revamp of the Mr. Freeze character. This episode provided such a burst in the popularity of the character that his comics' counterpart had his origins retconned to more closely resemble this episode. This brought about his resurrection in the comics and introduced Nora Fries to the comics as well. His origin was also used in the 1997 film Batman & Robin, which featured Mr. Freeze as one of its primary villains.
I never knew Nora came from this show. I've always known Mr. Freeze as the villain who only did everything to save Nora. Guess this episode is super important but this show was before my time so never watched it
Personally, my favourite episode is "Almost Got 'Im". I love the unique nature of how it stands apart from the other episodes, with the villains just sitting around playing cards, telling stories about how they almost got Batman, and some of the little character details you notice like Two-Face drinking Half and Half, and having 2 2 cards are fantastic. Heart of Ice is probably the most meaningful, impactful episode, though.
Apparently in the Comics Mr Freeze was killed by the Joker or something like that but then this Episode came out and Mr Freeze just showed up alive again in the Comics with no explanation
"He's subjecting other people to HIS Hell"
Which has clearly frozen over
According to Dante, the lowest circle of Hell, the place for betrayers and mutineers, is a frozen wasteland.
In this case its a fitting comparison.
Bruce's disguise here being so good is gonna make some of the later ones pretty funny.
DC got a lot of hate for when they did New 52 Freeze, where he is a stalker that fell in love with Nora who never meet him and was old enough to be his grandmother. The fans made it clear they want the true Freeze back
“DC got a lot of hate for when they did the New 52 *CHARACTER*” could just describe basically every character they own outside of Batman. Like it’s really amazing how badly DC fumbled 90% of their characters in the reboot
Just so you know, this background for Mr. Freeze was one of the many inventions of BAS that were so good it was adopted into overall Batman lore. This series invented many things that were later adapted into comics, movies and television. This includes creating the character of Harley Quinn.
The second big achievement of Batman the Animated serie after Two-Face character rebuild( cause Two-Face happens before in the real episode order)...the rebuild of Mr Freeze character and his backstory...Before that episode, he was a C or D vilain with a cool ice gun, after that episode, he became a Shakespearian tragedy...It win the Emmy without question, every dialogue are amazing, so many chilling line !! 3rd achievement of the serie is pretty much Harley Quinn...that serie brought us so much to that universe...
She’s never been more Harley than in this show. Everything else is just ok or a very different character like modern Harley
@@namecomingsoon9517 Depends on what you are looking for in her character...but it's true they really got her right at the start !
@@namecomingsoon9517 Harley in the Arkham Games is great
@@joaquinlopez3854 i’ve never played those games. But i’m more talking about animated, tv show, and movie Harley. In that vane
Mark Hamills joker is the greatest part of this series and its not even close
The planned ending was to have a weeping Freeze in his cell, with his tears freezing and turning into snowflakes. Timm and Dini mentioned that if they could go back and do any episode again, they would do "Heart of Ice" and include this. This was used in Batman & Robin.
Batman's uttering of "My God!" after watching the tape is unusual in a cartoon, as the censors generally considered any mention of religion or any expletive unpassable. Bruce Timm mentioned on the commentary for the episode that he considers it strange they never caught it.
The censors were just as surprised as Bruce was!
The censors were too captivated by the story.
"Yes. It would move me to tears if I still had tears to shed." is still one hell of a line.
Mr. Freeze has a LOT of great lines throughout BTAS
Stuff invented by Batman the Animated Series:
- Mr Freeze's whole origin story and backstory and vibe
- it's similarly reinvented the Mad Hatter
- Harley Quinn
- Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy's relationship
- Renee Montoya
- Batman voice being different from Bruce Wayne voice
- Bruce Wayne's childhood hero, the Grey Ghost (played by Adam West)
- The iconic Art Deco style in Gotham's architecture.
- Red Claw
- The Phantasm (although the Phantasm is somewhat based on The Reaper)
- The official proper canonical pronunciation of Ra's Al Ghul. ("Raysh Al Gool")
- GCPD blimps
_"Batman voice being different from Bruce Wayne voice"_
Weeeell, that's something else they learned/honored from Fleischer Superman. You had _"Gee, gosh, miss Lane, I don't know why Jimmy is acting this way." "This looks like a job..._ *for Superman." "Hold your fire, gentlemen, I will handle this."*
He's a far more minor character, but the character Lock-Up also started off in this show before being used in the comics. Even before Harley herself, in fact.
@@pegusus12346 Yeah, there are a couple others, but they're such minor characters that most people have never even heard of them.
“Oh yes…I’D KILL FOR THAT.”
The incredible voice of Michael Ansara as Victor Freeze is just unbelievable. Sad, emotionless yet so filled with sadness. Unrivaled.
He was an accomplished stage actor. "For this great dishonor, I will have Kirk's head on a spike and parade it in these blood soaked halls."-Kang; Day of the Dove TOS.
Mr. Freeze's last lines in the ending always gets me man. So heartbreaking and tragic.
"I failed you. I wish there were another way for me to say it. I cannot. I can only beg your forgiveness... and pray you hear me somehow. Some place... where a warm hand waits for mine."
While I do not condone the actions of Mr. Freeze, I understand the how and the why. Glad they changed Mr. Freeze from a goofy villain to a tragic and broken villain.
I love how this story persisted through the Animated DC verse, up through Batman Beyond.
The greatest and most sympathetic character ever in Batman history damn it.
The original idea for the flashback video was to have Freeze cling to Nora's cryogenic tank and realize in horror that his hair, now frozen, is breaking off in chunks. Paul Dini stated that he wanted to do this in pre-production, but they were over air time and cut it out.
Mr. Freeze was voiced by late actor Michael Ansara, best known as the Klingon Kang from the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Day of the Dove" and Cochise in the Western television series "Broken Arrow".
Fun fact, Ferris Boyle was the first role of Mark Hamill in Batman TAS.
His second role was fairly minor and ultimately unpopular by comparison.
The businessman was voiced by Mark Hamill.
Batman saying “Goodnight, “humanitarian”…” to Ferris Boyle is one of my favorite moments from the episode.
This mr. Freeze was the first villain I actually understood and kind of cheered for. His cold demeanor and almost lifeless voice still gives me chills!
Anyone notices a lot of Star wars references? the "bacta" like tank, batman hanging upside down in a cold place, Mark Hamill voices Ferris other than Joker and Freeze's suit keeping him alive much like Darth Vader.
_"Freeze's suit keeping him alive much like Darth Vader."_
Well, that one predates Star Wars.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps true, I can't remember but back then he use to be called Mr. Zero and I think his suit was more for show than a survival suit.
"Some of these guys are drawn like a rectangle with a head."
Just wait until season 3.
This episode's ending is, by far, one of the saddest in any animated media. Mr Freeze's speech to Nora at the end always gets me. Freeze was always a tragic character. Both in the DCAU & in the "Arkham" series.
The plot and premise of the episode are integrated into Mr. Freeze's origin in the 2011 video game Batman: Arkham City (also written by Paul Dini) - in one of his interview tapes with Hugo Strange, Freeze recounts the events that led him to become a supervillain and the story closely resembles the episode. The 2014 Batman: Arkham Origins DLC campaign "Cold, Cold Heart" incorporated several elements of "Heart of Ice"
He has puns while actively hurting batman, he is so cold he leaves him henchmen alone with dead legs. I've nearly gets his revenge. And the music slaps. It's so damn good.
YES! The episode that changed Mr. Feeeze from cheesy freeze ray guy to Shakespearean tragedy. Even Arnie’s version had the Nora backstory, that’s how good it is.
If the film still happens I'd love to see Freeze as the main villain for The Batman 2 and for them to take inspiration from this episode.
Interesting note, the line "Revenge is a dish best served cold" in this episode is often attributed as "An old Klingon proverb." Appropriate as Mr. Freeze is voiced by Michael Ansara who played the Klingon Kang in Star Trek the Original Series and Deep Space Nine.
The most understandable and redeemable villain in the classic Batman rogue gallery
Well, I think Catwoman tops him in that regard.
This is one of the big ones. One of the Batman:TAS-episodes that had a lasting influence not only on the show, but the entire Batman-Mythos by reinventing Mr.Freeze. And this interpretation still lasts.
8:17
I like how Calvin's logic here was basically: "If I scream it loud enough it means I'm right."
Everyone appreciating the episode like a piece of art even making a small comparison to Citizen Kane and Aaron behaving like a low IQ kid XD.
This is the first of many villains that you might recognise has kept the same voice and origin in most media that follows it, particularly the Arkham games.
The little moments with Bruce and Alfred make me smile. Him giving Bruce soup is very much a parent thing. And seeing that they’re the only family they have (for now) makes it more adorable.
Heart of Ice is one of the greatest episodes of tv I have ever seen it’s a masterpiece and one of the best episodes of the show and one of my favourites.
I can’t wait for your reaction to Two-Face Parts 1 and 2 and Feat of Clay parts 1 and 2
Ahh yes the recanonizing of Dr.Viktor Fries
I like that they have opposing names like Boyle (boil) and Summer.
Live Action needs to get on THIS level of Mr. Freeze. This is the best version of him ever so far.
6:15 - This guy's legs are trapped in blocks of solid ice, yet Batman was able to get his pants and shoes off.
Absolutely amazing. I am surprised how much I remembered about this episode and how it still gives me chills. No pun intended. So happy this is getting reacted to, one of my favorites growing up. My brother and I watched this all the time! Great reactions from the crew as always!
To add on Aaron's comment about him dealing with someone in similarity (Mr. Freeze), I've seen it somewhere mentioned that this show is basically Batman dealing with different forms of his personal demons, they're just personified as the notable/main side character of the episode/story, be it a villain, anti-hero, or just one of the citizens.
Batman's entire Rogue's Gallery is just a collection of characters representing dark facets of his own personality.
@@peterbrazukas7771 That's what I meant, variations on his "personal demons".
This is the point when THAT became the backstory for Mr. Freeze. It wasn't before.
Still one of the greatest stories gold in the entire genre of comic book adaptations. They took a C list villain in Mr. Freeze, and turned him into a Shakespearean romantic tragedy!
I truly hope that when Victor Fries is brought back to the big screen that they keep this storyline and make him the most sympathetic villain in comic book movie history.
this episode made mr. freeze a cooler charachter so chill aaron
Before I had only HEARD of Batman the Animated series. NEVER watched it, never watched ANY Batman stuff, unless I was bored. Heck, didn't really enjoy superheros stuff since it was just never on my TV when I was watching. But recently I finally looked at the animated series, and this was the first episode I ever saw.
I've been binging the rest of the series slowly ever since.
The Mr. Freeze story arc is one of my favorite parts of this series.
My boy Aaron defending the merits of Batman & Robin. God bless.
I love this show for how they write Batman as a compassionate person towards the villains. He doesn't see them as irredemable monsters that always have been evil or destined to be evil. He sees them as people who, often by chance or the well..."one bad day" were driven towards doing those bad deeds. Yes, it was their choice ulitmetely, but at the same time it doesn't mean they don't deserve sympathy for things that happened to them BEFORE they made that turn. He knows how it feels bc he's been there. I think it's esp true with Mr.Freeze. Because Bruce became Batman in the first place bc he lost people he loved-his parents.
So glad they're reacting to this series.
if you didn't know this series is what created harley quinn. she didn't exist untill her first apperence in this series
Still fun that Mark Hamill voices a supervising and a corporate one
When a cartoon can choke you up you know its good.
This is probably one of the best mr freeze ever
Loving your reactions
The story that turned the lame Mr. Zero from the silver age into the Shakespearean tragedy that is Mr. Freeze. The fact that the comics took this origin into the main story really shows how awesome this show is. Bruce Timm and Paul Dini really flexed this time.
Except he was only Mr. Zero from 1959 to 1966 when he was retooled for the TV series (as "Dr. Art Schivel aka Mr. Freeze", with an Austrian German accent, and played by George Sanders, the voice of Shere Khan).
This episode is a Master Piece and you just take the piss all the way through it
Aaron.
Freeze doesn’t sound like Arnold because Arnold hadn’t played the part yet. This was released in 1992.
While everyone talks about how great this episode is it can't be stated enough how influential it is. This episode completely redefined Mr. Freeze. Made him from a generic ice villain into the character we know now. Save perhaps for Mad Love this is the most important episode for adding to the mythos ever done by the show.
This episode, Two Face, and Baby Doll are all episodes with really sympathetic villains and are gut punches. All very fantastic episodes.
And clayface as well.
I went back to watch this episode and wow I completely forgot Rick was even in the reactions (not to be taken as an insult) and I know he said he wouldn’t be reacting to as much so since he’s seen this makes sense
This episode was the first time this backstory for Mr. Freeze was on place. He was a different character before the Animated Series.
Michael Ansara did a great job bringing Mr. Freeze to life.
Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy, did freelance work for BTAS. Specifically, the design of Mr Freeze here.
if I remember didn't this ep win an award for its storytelling or something back when it aired
yeah just went and checked before posting it was one of the best eps and won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program.
I mean batman the animated series was a great show as it didn't dumb down its themes or talk down to kids even though I'm sure many in that time thought cartoons were only for kids
Have you guys not played the Arkham Trilogy games? Thats definitely one everyone would love to see your reactions to, cause seeing you react to Mr Freeze without any mention on how good City made him so true to TAS. The games are the ultimate culmination of Conroy Bat and Hamill Joker.
Out of all the Mr. freezes this one is my all-time favorite
the dad sneeze 😭😤
Having the peak at the beginning of the show is certainly something
Possibly my favorite episode of the entire series.
It makes more sense to be mr freeze than it makes to be Batman
Fun Fact: Boyle was voiced by Mark Hamill.^^
This episode completely revamped freezes backstory and made him one of the best Batman rogues of all time
He also played by Otto Preminger and Arnold Schwarzenegger
I love Batman & Robin.
Literally one of the greatest episodes

I appreciate the Suburban Commando reference!
This episode definitely came up with the backstory for Freeze. Before this in the comics he was just an ice-themed bad guy.
Batman and Robin was the first Batman movie I saw and I remember it from my childhood watching it on TV with my nerf gun pretending to be Mr. Freeze. I actually remember more of that movie than the Dark Knight. I fell asleep during the Nolan movies lol
And he got to sing that song in the batman movie :D
I often thought one of the worst miscasting happen with arnold...I think Patrick Stewart could have pulled off the Tim Burton Mr. Freeze Properly in a live action show.
I am convinced at this point that Rick and Aaron are intentionally heckling each other in these reactions for things they love or are confused about on purpose. Rick for his being particular about certain media and love of anime things, and Aaron for his misunderstanding of anime animation quirks.
One of the most groundbreaking episodes that came out of this series.
This reaction is fucking hilarious. Just turned into Aaron defending Batman and Robin against Eric/Rick. Aaron, I don't like the movie THAT much, but I do really like Mr. Freeze in it.
the episode that made Mr freeze a great character and now this is the store that is use the most
Easily one of the best Batman *things* to ever exist.
Ferris Boyle was Mark Hammil's first voice acting credit on this show
Ice puns, montone voice, building a giant laser, maybe Arnolds version of Freeze is more accurate than we ever knew.
One of my favorite episodes in the series!
I was never much of a Batman fan, this episode made me a Mr Freeze fan.
One of my favorites! I feel so bad for Freeze. Also loved Mark Hamill as the Ferris Boyle.
And we get to one of THE episodes
