He refused to press charges and allowed him to receive in person his Oscar and enjoy the night. He did not get an apology that night. He did indeed saved the Oscar's. A lot of people worked really hard to make the best out of it. Chris did not play victim, although he was, and let the show go on, he was thinking above himself with Will, with the Academy, that did not protect him, and with the audience. I wouldn't have done that. I would have humiliated Will in public with the mic in hand and have him escorted out on live TV. Chris has an incredible restraint. Getting slapped even angers anybody more than being punched. Its really very hard not to hit back or at least explode emotionally when getting slapped that hard. I think, as additional testament to his restraint, it's easy to miss his reflex.
For less than a second, Chris Rock's right hand began to clench up, his left arm raised in defensive position, and his expression was one of pre-fight. Just standard reflex upon being struck. But, somehow, he came back from that moment, fought every instinct (physical, verbal, emotional), and pressed on.
