I said Chris will end up thanking Will.....Chris is gonna and has already come out of this the bigger man....Kudos Chris, although a part of me wishes you had hit him back, at the end of the day your looking good and Will Smith not so good
Look at the producer putting the blame on Chris for why Will wasn't escorted out. I said before just because Chris didn't want Will hauled out in cuffs by LAPD on live TV doesn't mean the Academy shouldn't have escorted Will out by security. Will Packer as a hired individual doesn't see he's going to be the Academy's scapegoat. They are lucky Chris isn't suing the Academy for perpetuating an unsafe working environment. It had to be stressful to remain there while his assailant was comforted in the mist of a breakdown, given an award and praised like a king with that standing ovation.
It should have been Packer’s call to remove him, not Chris Rock’s. He’s responsible for the show. Rock was still in shock, unfair for Rock to shoulder that.
Nailed it. Packer just wants to look good and shift the responsibility to Rock. But HE’s the director. HE should have taken action. HIS presenter was assaulted. Accountability, owning and making hard decisions is something that is super rare these days with too many people. But I’m afraid in this day and age Packer’s disastrous handling of the aftermath will go without consequences, heck with how woke Hollywood is he may even get another shot at it.
At *2:00**,* he first laughed, but then his wife did not laughed and it was not funny. Until, he goes up onstage and slaps *Chris Rock* because *he made a joke* about his wife *Jada Pinkett-Smith’s alopecia look.*
@@JakeLlavoreThen his wife came out all over the internet and said they weren't even married and hadn't been for awhile and she had no clue why he would do that. She is far from a class act.

“ class act” oh my god … what the hell is wrong with your exaggerated way of talking ? why are people on Here always saying such weird stuff ? You think it is “classy “to make jokes like this ? you must be a “ class “ act yourself
WHAT IF A WOMAN LIKE WANDA SYKES HAD MADE THAT SAME JOKE? iS THE SLAP OK THEN TOO? WHAT WOULD THE ACADEMY DO THEN? THERE IS STILL NO PROOF THAT CHRISS ROCK EVER KNEW ABOUT JADA'S HAIR CONDITION. NOT EVERYONE FOLLOWS A NOBODY'S USELESS, HOPELESS LIFE ONLINE.
Spiritual? Like ghosts and here but not really here? Award? Stop with these trigger words y’all are using all over the internet. He’s the bigger MAN.PERIOD.
Nah he was the bigger man at the end, but he went off scripted, I’m sure they would have never approved that in a script. Especially due to the stuff they both have been going through.
He was saved back then but it looks like now from everything we are hearing in the News and TH-cam that Will may be in a lot of hot water with his close friendship with P Diddy and others.
Nope, just by smart calculation behaviour by Rock. What do you expect? That he will fight him back or call the Police while crying? Rock wanted to save himself.
Chris Rock didn’t want Will Smith removed from the awards show or he didn’t want the police to take him to jail? Perhaps the producer misunderstood and that part needs to be clarified. His removal from the show should not depend on Chris alone but rather the academy themselves who knew he broke conduct.
Exactly...the man stunned from the slapped at the time... the academy trump rock decision...its not like he was a minor seeking his permission ....they should have acted right away...gtfooh will packer...now he's backtracking and second guessing typical narcissist...bringing attention to him now so called breaking silence
They’re probably thinking it’s more complex considering Chris rock went off script. He didn’t really have to come after Jada like that so the producer is probably a little more hands off at that point and putting it on Chris because he’s the one who said what he said. I bet you if it was on script, it would’ve been looked at differently. It definitely would not have fallen on Chris it would’ve fallen on the writers and more of the Academy. This was strictly between the two men. Chris rock didn’t want Will Smith removed from the show, nor did he want the police involved. He just wanted to show to go on.
Regardless of Chris’ request to let it go and not press charges, the Academy’s responsibility was and is to hold Will accountable for his disgusting behavior. Do the right thing Academy and have a spine. No matter how much Will and Jada try to justify, causing bodily harm and verbal abuse is unacceptable.
this guy thinks he slick, he knows it was their responsability to remove will. once again chris is being used and the scapegoat. he never said he didnt want him removed, he said not arrested. now if chris comes out and says i didn't say i didnt want him removed, this guy will claim i thought thats what he meant when he said he didnt want him arrested, this guy didnt want will to leave bc he knew it was his first oscar and he resects will more.
Completley agree ! if somebody assaults you , steals youre car or burns youre house down does that mean the police has to ask permission from you to go arrest that person ? . I felt the only reason why Will was allowed to stay is because they obviously already knew he was gonna ge the oscar and they didnt want to spoil that for him completley ignoring Rock's embarrasing moment and straight up abuse .
Not sure if this is a state-by-state thing or not. I can say, here in Pennsylvania, there's no such thing as civilians pressing charges. That's the purview of the police exclusively. Now, and officer MAY extend the courtesy to you to make the decision, but it is just a courtesy. If you didn't want them to press charges, they don't have to abstain. If you want them to press charges but they believe no offense has occurred, they don't have to push forward.
So, not only is Chris Rock one of the greatest comedians of all time, he's also a wonderful soul. Kudos to you, Chris. You were the real man on the stage.
I have never liked him especially the Asian jokes in Oscar couples years back. But he is now my hero. Will Smith should be removed of his membership in the Academy
One good thing came out of this, Chris Rock has become the embodiment of professionalism and dignity. How many people could continue doing their job without missing a beat after a physical and verbal assault like that?
The Academy has failed here and continues to do so by taking so long to punish Will Smith for committing an assault on live TV. The messaging is just awful. It was not Chris Rock's responsibility to get Will Smooth removed from the premises. It was the Academy's! Chris Rock was dazed after being physically assaulted, cursed at and disrespected in front of millions of people. In my mind, there is nothing the Academy or Will Smith can do to ever make this up to Chris Rock. He didn't deserve this. No one does.
Precisely. In this interview, it’s as if Rock was the only one held responsible for either “retaliating” or not. He deserved protection and to be defended. He is not the only one who could have taken the heat for making the right decision, ie to have Smith removed. In fact, he’s the last person who should have had to do so. Even in Boston he said he’s still processing it.
Chris Rock was shocked by it, just like the rest of us... and so was the Academy. It's a unique situation, and you don't know how to handle it. Chris Rock obviously had some influence on how they handled it too. But the reason it's taking them so long to decide what to do now, is it's a group of people weighing in options.
@@beebuzz959 It shouldn't be that hard they had a whole bunch of rules made up because of all the Harvey Weinstein assaults. They had a choice to make and they had two paths to follow the right path kick his ass out which probably gives them bad Press/Pr - or the "We need to Save Face and Views/Ratings" let him stay to get his award.
I couldn't agree more! He not only kept it together, but he also turned it into a joke instantly with the "greatest night in television" quote. Pure talent and pure class. I am a huge fan of Chris and Will and still am. Will needed to apologize and he has. Chris I think has already put it behind him and maybe even forgave him. I hope the rest of the world can too but know full well some people want a person's head if they even SAY something they disagree with. So, ya this will be polarized for a very long time I'm sure.
This feels like blaming the victim. I’m sure Chris didn’t want to be the one responsible for throwing Will out. The people in charge of the show should’ve done something
Yea, this whole interview sounds like damage control where the Oscars are trying to say "we did everything right but Chris stopped us". Even by saying the joke wasn't in their approved script is saying that he did it to himself
No, that is allowing the victim to have a voice and have final say. If they ignored Rock's requests, not leaving him in control, that would have been disrespecting him as much as Smith did. Rock is a grown man. He was most affected. Of course he should have the biggest voice and call in how it was handle out of respect for him and what he endured.
@@christinew1981 yeah well there an interview with luella on hear and the lady who channel it is says she is friends with this guy and she called him right after and he said will heard chris rehearsing this joke backstage.th-cam.com/video/YNmjSZzJ0z4/w-d-xo.html
No one consoled Chris Rock. He was in shock & trying to contain the event. The academy should have done the right thing & asked Will to remove himself & if not remove him by force. Someone should have done the right thing & not put more heat on Chris Rock to make the decision in front of the world.
The speed at which Chris Rock's mind worked that night, and I'm sure must on a daily basis, is astounding. His control over his emotions, keeping his ego from erupting, all while still cracking jokes ... Glorious.
Chris is a man who's at peace and has a pure heart, for someone to be assaulted in front of an audience and a world wide broadcast and still compose yourself and carry on, on top of that not press charges, that's so astonishing...Much respect for Chris....How he delt with the situation is so admirable.
Yet this producer Will Packer just threw him under the bus by saying it was Chris Rock who didn't want him to leave. He basically tried to blame Chris Rock for the reason Will Smith wasn't physically removed. What cheap cop out! I guess Chris Rock's camp is saying that is totally false. Chris didn't want to press charges but never said he didn't want him removed!
Just imagine standing there and staring at a full audience, in front of dozens of cameras, alone on the stage, and all you hear is silence. Everyone in the audience is just staring at you, and you know millions of people around the world are looking at you from their television sets in shock. Hell, you'd be the one most in shock; you just got assaulted and cussed at by Will Smith. So what the hell would you do or say? The fact that Chris could recover within a few seconds and crack an amazing joke to ease the tension is incredible. Who knows what would've happened had he decided to just walk off stage instead. What a champ. On the other hand, Will Smith thinks he can do damage control by calling up Academy board members to apologise before even getting on the phone and apologising to Chris like a man. Relying on a publicist to release a media apology statement instead of doing it himself. Chris Rock is twice the man he is. Pathetic.
I work in a large hospital (company). If someone hired by the company (employee) is assaulted by someone, the company’s Human Resource department doesn’t ask the employee if they want action taken against the assailant, they just enforce the company’s no-tolerance for violence, harassment, discrimination, etc. policies. An assault against an employee is an assault against the company. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a highly profitable company. It nets in the neighborhood of $40M-$50M per year. For the 2022 Academy Awards Show, Chris Rock was hired as a Presenter (employee). An employee of the company was assaulted. There is no reasonable excuse why the company didn’t take swift and decisive action and immediately invoke legal action. Hats off the Chris Rock’s professionalism, but the company let him and all who value justice down. At this point the Academy is equally at fault and paramount to accessory to the assault.
Everything you said I agree totally with you. Your words on this situation should be plastered all over social media and in magazines and on t.v. I wish there was a way of making Will smith and the academy read your writing.I love how you worded it perfectly and I just thought I’d like to tell you I love it and I agree with everything you just said.
Chris Rock, is truly a stand up guy and a true friend. He had no ill intentions and was looking out for Will, even though Will clearly didn’t care about him.
Two guys had a decision to make that would affect how the rest of us will see them in the future. One guy made the right choice; the other guy fucked up royally.
He's hardly a.stand up guy making fun of a terrible condition not saying will was in right either. They were both in the wrong and chris should say sorry for his disrespectful comment!
It’s crazy how Chris Rock embodies the character Will Smith pretended to have. I used to admire Will but he’s all words. Rock’s stature is 100 times greater. Actions over words all day.
Will is 100 percent words. So is jada. There are videos out now showing what they said in the past as for will he said he doesn’t respond to hate with violence but he responded with violence from a joke by one of the best comedians alive. And Jada had said she embraces her bald head and she loves it days before the academy awards so all this is a bunch of bs. They are both fake people and still have a lot of growing up to do. And their in their 40’s? They are so cringe
Lost all respect I ever had for Will. Chris is reliving all his bullying memories in one Oscar moment. This will take years for him to fully grasp the moment. I feel for you, Chris Rock.
I know it's sad , as big of a deal Jada made about her "medical condition" the psychological effect on someone who has the past the Chris could REALLY BE DEVASTATING.
Do not leave the call up to the one who was assaulted, especially minutes after it occurred. If I was Chris I would have said the same thing. As a victim you're thinking of diluting the embarrassment, making people believe you are fine, making others comfortable. These are classic thoughts. Fine, can't press charges. But that took place in the academy's house, streaming to families around the world, witnessing a blatant act of unprovoked violence. Comedy clubs wouldn't let someone do that and stay because it sets a tone for what's permissible - they should have REMOVED him.
Chris Rock deserves an Oscar for performance of the night. He successfully deescalated the situation and was able to keep the show on track. True professional.
@@gene081976 THIS!!! It would actually be quite legitimate given today's socio-political climate. Definitely more so than the one awarded to Obama back in 2008.

Judging by the world's reaction to it, I'm pretty sure that WAS the show. But I'm right there with you on the sentiment. Chris showed himself to be a class act, he could've VERY easily decided to poke the bear and watched Will Smith absolutely explode, but he chose to stay professional instead. Genuinely a respectable thing to do.
He did a great job. But it did not save the show. That slap took the wind out of the Oscar’s. The Oscar’s were horrible this year. Will Packer nice try but it was a big failure
@DJ Porter was the second lease watched Oscar’s in the History of the show. Nice Try Will Packer now they know how to never do the Oscar’s ever. At least they got a Blueprint of what not to do this year
The decision to remove ANYONE who just assaulted a performer on live television should NEVER be up to the person who was just assaulted. The assault IS the self-made decision to be automatically removed, arrested, and booked.
I have 3 brothers in-laws the same, all their wives sleep around and do not love them. This world have men that should are in 3rd class humans we know them as B*tches.
Watching this relationship over the years, it seems like a form of domestic abuse where one party gradually wears down the partner's confidence to where he'll substitute her judgment and perspective for his own and buy into her low opinion of him, to where all he wants is her approval. Which by withholding it she keeps control. The man is worth a quarter of a billion dollars ... he should find a woman who values him for his intelligence, talent, and kindness. When he slapped Chris Rock? I blame her.
A year later: Rock's done his first public set about the incident. Throughout all of this, he's made The Best choices to walk tall & use his head. Mad respect & props to the ultimate professional &comedian, Chris Rock.
Why did no one went to comfort Chris on stage? This makes Chris Rock the better person. Much respect to Chris, he is a role model for our children. KUDOS MAN.

The victim should never be put in the position to be responsible to decide what happens next, immediately after an assault and battery. The fact that the academy and/or academy affiliates are using Chris's statements (directly after the assault) as rationale for not ejecting Will Smith is absolutely despicable. In the fact they are slapping him again by trying to use his statements as justification. It's disgusting. When someone is assaulted, it's time for the people around the victim to step up and take control of the situation. Hollywood is a good example of when the Rule of Equity (ROE) supersedes the Rule of Law (ROL). Historically, the ROE was specifically created for the British Monarchy, where the Royals were given "Equity Points" (EPs) for their royalty, power, prestige, wealth, social status. The ROL, on the other hand, was created specifically for the non-Royals, the Commoners. The Royals were spotted certain EPs depending on their line of accession to the throne. The King or Queen was spotted infinity EPs, a prince or princess, duke or duchess, baron or baroness would be spotted a lower number from the King, Queen. But the Royals would have much more EPs than any Commoner. This allowed the Royals to rape, murder, torture, enslave the Commoners at will, since the ROE superseded the ROL meant for Commoners. In the U.S., there is no Monarchy, but there are those with wealth, power, fame, prestige, high social status, and their Equity Points are based on these characteristics. As a throwback to British Rule, the U.S. continued w/ the British system of having 2 governing laws: (1) ROE, (2) ROL. And as a throwback, in the U.S., the ROE supersedes the ROL. The Founding Fathers detested the ROE and worked hard to eradicate this in the U.S. legal system; they felt that the ROE was another manifestation of Tyranny. But the ROE crept back in via many SCOTUS rulings in the past two centuries. Hence, this is why some peeps are given special consideration not afforded to others. In Hollywood, Smith has more EPs than Rock. Hence, this is why the LAPD, Academy Awards honchos are giving Smith more consideration, leniency.

Not mentioning his sick in the head little wife laughing hard after his garbage husband assaulted Chris Rock. This is not right! And that jerk is not "emotionally damaged", but a criminal, a jerk, a nobody!
What a selfless reaction by Chris. He tried to Save the moment for the rest of the show. It could have been so easy for him to just roast Will with really hurtful Jokes. I’ve been hit before, and it’s demoralizing and shameful and he just shook it off and kept on going. It’s not easy to do the right thing.
nothing against you but i'm tired of reading "emotionally damaged" when it means "man who already had 400 million dollars keeps taking money to do bad reality shows about ruining his marriage for youtube". if you want emotional damage, go talk to kids who get beat routinely or soldiers who came back without half their friends
@@francinenanda only a weak minded person would ever think that Chris Rock’s joke (referring/comparing Jada to Demi Moore, an incredibly beautiful women) as bullying is so foolish!! I don’t think for a second that he knew Jada was struggling with Alopecia. Jada has been owning her look for a long time, she preaches being a strong fierce women, being that offended over a gentle joke like that is just ridiculous.
Chris is a better man than me. I understand why he didn't want to press charges, but I would still sue the holy living bat crap out of Will. Plus, I would sue the Oscars. They let Will accept his award, laugh and play around on stage and attend the after party. I would sue both the Oscars & Will for $1 million per minute that Will got to stay in the building after he attacked. But hey. Just another rich jerk doing whatever he wants with NO CONSEQUENCES. You know. America...
@Sean Hardman Jada smith is an actress, and that was the Oscar. Had Will stayed mute and do an IG or include some statements in his acceptance speech, he would have had Chris Rock cancelled. But hélas
This is a an example of how out of touch with reality and what a warped sense of right and wrong is so pervasive in the entertainment industry. Any regular citizen would have been arrested removed and charged whether the victim would have pressed charges or not at a later date would be discussed. Will Smith definitely got a get-out-of-jail-free card with all of his friends giving him a standing ovation! My entertainment dollars will now be spent elsewhere
I have been truly impressed with Chris Rock's response to this. He handled Will Smith's immature moment with maturity and grace. It takes a moment to have five minutes of fame, but it takes a lifetime to have that kind of self-control. Well-done, Chris Rock.
I think it immature to joke, domestic or internationally, about a medical condition that upwards of 7 million people, in the US alone, suffer from. It's absurd.
@@speway First off, he didn't know that she had alopecia. Secondly, alopecia is not cancer. It is hair loss, which most Americans deal with as they age and Jada is 50. Thirdly, Jada shaved off her entire hair herself - that was her decision. She's trying to play it off as if she has some terminal disease. It's only hair loss, and if you see her scalp, you'll see that it is a small patch. But she decided to make it a huge thing because she is an attention seeker. Same as Will, who has spent a life time making fun of people's baldness.
Chris Rock dealt with bullies growing up and learned by reacting to a punch or verbal jabs, the bully wins. He was cool, collected and did not give Will Smith the satisfaction. Chris did not get Will Smith arrested and removed from the Oscars. Chris knew if he reacted that way even though he was justified, Will Smith would get the sympathy from being led out by the LAPD in handcuffs and sent to prison. Chris Rock was the smartest guy in the room and he had the last laugh.
They should not have been asking if he wanted them to take Mr. Smith away, they should have just done exactly that! Are you kidding? Remove anyone from anyplace where there isn't a cage or boxing ring and assault is part of their action.
FR. Why they asking the person who was assaulted on stage if they want to press charges? Most men will refuse to press charges. The “producer” needs to grow some balls. The Oscar’s are trying to just save face but in reality did nothing.
It would've made more drama and as celebrities public image is the most important thing. Arresting Will would've had alot of collateral damage including on Chris and he and the cops knew this. Kinda like family conflicts let's say a cousin hits you or your siblings and ya'll start fighting. The families first response isn't to press charges because it'll cause more problems within the family it's to resolve the conflict internally.
@@l337g0g0 no, unfortunately that's not the case. Ike Turner, for example, was never arrested for domestic or sexual abuse, because Tina herself never pressed charges.
Will is LUCKY Chris Rock is such a stand-up guy. He’s LUCKY that the man he assaulted had compassion in a moment where most others would have been vengeful. Will owes Chris much MUCH more than an apology.
Let also get this straight. The producers of the event can have anyone removed from the event, and should have. Why they would put the weight of that decision on the shoulders of the victim is beyond comprehension. This would have been the moment to do the right thing by the victim and the remaining audience. Lets not mention, the whole world was/is watching...
Exactly. Will Packards attempt to cover his butt by victim blaming is shameful. He shouldnt be allowed to produce a dog show. He even admits that Chris only statement was that he didn't want will Smith arrested. He never said he didn't want will Smith to leave. It's a private event with security. They could have had will Smith removed
Everyone would have interpreted Smith's removal as having come from Rock, one way or another. What I don't get is the complete lack of remorse Smith had for many many hours after the slap...and probably still has. Smith has the mind of a gangsta--and that's no compliment. I'm King of the World!
Chris was so concerned about how his other colleagues had worked so hard. Especially Questlove who was about to win an Oscar for a movie about marginalized people in Harlem. And he wanted Will to be there for his award too! Incredible grace.
What I understood, though, was that Chris didn't want to press charges. I don't know if he was advocating for him to stay, I think that was the producer's interpretation of it all. That's what I understood. But Will Smith behaved like a tantrumming toddler, he got upset, got physical, and still refused to cooperate by voluntarily leaving. They gave in to him like a little kid. Lost a lot of respect for him.
I’m a producer. This producer did not do the right thing. He didn’t need chris’s (the victim and his employee - not a friend in this scenario) permission to arrest Will (a guest - not a friend in this scenario). Chris was not in charge of the Oscar’s - he was. The fact that he let this go based on the employee’s feelings to guest relationship showed he’s a weak producer. He showed the world he don’t know how to handle violent issues properly under his command and he can’t separate friends from work. This isn’t a fight in his home between the two of them - this was a slap in front other guests in a place that was not his, in front of tv that broadcasted over the world, which he do not own. His job was to keep all this employees and all his guests mentally and physically safe. He failed.
I agree. This producer's behavior was absolutely unacceptable. He said he advocated to keep Smith there after talking to the victim? Unbelievably unprofessional and dangerous.
I guarantee you’ve never produced the Academy Awards but please enlighten us and tell us what you would’ve done and furthermore what you would’ve done, knowing he was going to win, when they announced best actor and you just had the award recipient arrested? All while never having faced this before and knowing you were the first black person to produce the awards and would forever be judged by your actions.
You're absolutely correct!!! The onus is on the Oscars, i.e. this producer who should've stepped up to the plate and taken full responsibility for what happened and not lay it at the victim's door. This was not a private party at someone's home between the two parties involved - this was public!
If he was in charge on of the Oscar’s why was he not involved in the conversation where they decided Will should leave. They did not tell him anything and we all know why
Chris was the classiest person in the room. He demonstrated that he was way more of a man than Will Smith. He kept his cool, didn’t retaliate. Will Smith destroyed his image and reputation in less than a minute. It was disgusting that he sat down and enjoyed the rest of the evening.
The fact that Chris said no, should have been all the more reason to "remove" Will Smith. Chris didn't want to press charges. The Academy (if they don't condone violence) should have had him leave and revoked his Oscar.
Chris was severely bullied when he was young . I can’t imagine the immense pain/humiliation he is experiencing. Will should be very thankful and should have apologised to Chris the same night . Because, the ‘REAL MAN’ refused to have him arrested .
Chris Rock is winning my heart more and more, this man is so endearing. He is such a stand up guy. He handled it with such profound class. I have utter respect for Chris Rock.
Will Smith better be thankful that Chris Rock declined to file assault and battery charges against him. But the self inflicting damage has already been done to Will Smith and now it's all up to how the Oscars deal with Will Smith from there
That’s one cool way to pass the responsibility to the victim. After being hit and humiliated they wanted Chris to make a decision while recovering from said humiliation AND still doing his job as host…
Chris Rock has truly shown what he's made of during extraordinary circumstances. Martin Luther King stated "The measure of a man is what he does with power. The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good. If you want to see the true measure of a man, watch how he treats his inferiors, not his equals"....Chris Rock on the night of the Academy Awards showed the entire world what it is to be a man of wisdom, courage, grace, kindness and caring for others even to Will Smith who brutally attacked and humiliated him.........I have absolute admiration and respect for Chris Rock!!!
Chris Rock showed the entire world what is meant to be a " KNIGHT " and on the other hand Will Smith showed the entire world how to be an " UNCIVILIZED CLOWN " of himself shame on you Will
If Will had slapped a white woman comedian on that stage, does anyone believe for a second that he wouldn't have been removed from the audience, whether SHE wanted it or not?
Or they simply never asked him to leave. They're just terrified of the prospect that their little club didnt do anything at all, and the backlash received because of that. Guy on the interview smells like b#ll$hit.
Exactly. There were two separate issues here. Chris Rock chose that night to not press charges with the police. But, the Academy and Will Packer still had every right to remove Will Smith from the premises for his violent actions that totally violated workplace laws and the Academy's rules. They did not need Chris Rock's permission to do that. That was THEIR responsibility, not Chris Rock's. And furthermore, Chris Rock NEVER advocated that Will Smith be allowed to stay in the building. That is a lie.
I was at Chris Rock’s show last night in Boston, some of the people in the audience started cursing Will Smith and tried to get the rest of us to chant with them. Chris quickly shut that down saying “it’s all good, it’s all good”. The people were removed and Chris went about telling his jokes that he had already prepared, none about this incident. Chris Rock is a true class act, he has handled himself professionally even when having the opportunity to take shots at Will Smith.
@@Reticuli Will Packer is in on this. He will never co sign ANY punishment for Will or Jada. If you want be to tell you how everybody in on this was going to benefit and how I KNOW this way planned. Just ask me and I will.
If Will Smith was in a dark place before his actions he's definitely in a darker place now.. He should feel embarrassed and ashamed of the way he acted.
Chris Rock was ambushed by Will Smith. Chris was thinking Will Smith was coming up to the stage to joke around with him. That was a really pathetic display of toxic masculinity by Will Smith.
It's totally mind blowing that in this day and age an assault is witnessed by millions of people worldwide and that not only was Smith not charged, not removed but then Hollywood proceeded to give him a standing ovation! Just disgusting! Kudos to Chris Rock for being a class act!
I couldn't have said it better! The standing ovation was disgusting. It sent a terrible message to Chris that he deserved to be slapped, and it also sent a positive message to Smith that he had a right to hit him. How warped is that
For all of the people who loosely, slanderously, and falsely throw around the term “privilege” on a daily basis… THIS is what privilege truly looks like. No accountability, actions, or consequences taken against Will Smith. Pathetic.

And how is it up to Chris Rock whether or not Will the a$$hole is charged? It's up to the LAPD and they failed. Any f^&king one of us would have been charged with assault; how sickening!
Give him Will's. : Just curious; is anyone out there now questioning WHOM ELSE Will might have been uncontrollably angry toward ? How bout questioning his wife for a change ? Domestic Violene can be so well hidden, and will "has" had a few "acting roles," right ?As another commenter made reference to the " actions of the abused victims", THIS MAKES ME SUSPICIOUS = not good acting and more than just an emotional outburst; This APPEARS to be the emotions of a man who can't control HIS ? Most overbearing egotistical demanding men would take it out on their wives later when they got home ? I, personally lost admiration for Will's "acting abilities " after a few of his " Beverly Hills" shows; He never seemed to be acting a part that "any other " decent actor could have filled. Maybe he just wants an excuse to retire? BTW ... Who was Hired by Whom, to "keep the peace, anyway? SECURITY HIRED by the Acadamy...or the LAPD? Could have made a great "scene" to instruct our children on "how to think and feel" but then, they'd have the legal system 's conflicting views to contend with! Somehow the WORD " Bullying " comes to mind too? Criminal and Entertainment Attorneys are going to have a great time with this one! Had Chris slugged Will BACK, the audience and the LAPD might have considered this all to have been a STUNT ?Perhaps if the audience had stood up and headed out of the auditorium, the LAPD could have had an easier time of deciding exactly what to do , also ? I don't think a person should be arrested (or slugged in the face?) for stating something he intended to be funny, that apparently was not ???Nowhere in the LAW BOOKS does it say that a person "expressing his right to free speech" can be physically accosted while the perpetrator receives no charges or penalty for their actions. END OF THAT STORY. Regardless, we all know Chris rock's JOB as a comedian is to have a great time with his audiences / Audiences do not have to "agree" with any statements made by ANY comedians, and many don't; But they do have the "right " to laugh. End OF SECOND STORY. Will Smith owes AT LEAST, the Acadamy, an apology But . Chris Rock would appear quite reputable, if HE would try to explain what he "really meant to say." THREE STORIES HERE are evident back and forth through the media. But is it not the "responsibility " of the LAPD, to "do their job also ? Duh, might be FOUR STORIES by the time this is "all resolved ?" "My Man Ain't no Middleman!" Fred Gold & Lynda Faye
Chris did not want LAPD to remove Will. He [Chris] never said specifically Will shouldn’t leave. For the producer to tell the Academy that Rock’s ENERGY was against the removal of Will was wrong.
I truly believe that the reason Chris was so calm and “collected” was that he was still in shock. He shouldn’t have even been asked to make the decision to have him arrested or not. You can still be in shock days later, it wasn’t his responsibility to decide what should happen because he wasn’t in the correct head space to make decisions and of course he would want to have everything continue smoothly. But the fact that he was able to be assaulted on stage and no one come to help or stop it, they had a responsibility to HIM to remove him immediately. The security of the facility should have removed him right then and there and then the police could have figured out what to do. But to put that on to Chris isn’t fair or right. Let me give an example that is very different.. but could relate to his mindset. I knew a girl in high school that was assaulted by the star football player of our school. Our football team was about to go to the championship. She requested that he not be expelled because at the time, she hadn’t processed what happened and she knew people would be angry and blame her if he were expelled and unable to play in the championship. Even though it would obviously not be her fault, she wanted to brush it off because he was well liked by everyone. This should have never been her responsibility to decide what happened to him, he should have been removed because it’s the right thing to do. And I’m sure now years later she wishes she wouldn’t have said he could stay but that’s because she’s had time to process it. I think Chris kind of felt the same way in the moment, like no no just continue the show it’s fine.. don’t kick him out etc. because he knew many people in the audience and the world would have blamed him for that. But it shouldn’t have even been an option for him to have to consider.
Chris ur a true reflection of ur upbringing..all the qualities of a humble man which also included embracing ur brotherman., Will Smith in his dark moment with compassion and empathy..and still continue with the awards with dignity..your MUM would be so proud❤...great to see Will reached out to you Chris..much luv n respect to you both..
That would have been a powerful message. It's a little disturbing that Chris Rock is being called a hero, in part, for not pressing charges or wanting Smith kicked out. It sets a bizarre expectation for victims of violence to not press charges in order to gloss things over for everyone else. I'm not saying that Rock did the wrong thing, but it seems off to call that particular decision heroic. Either way, the joke was funny and not that harsh at all.
@@jacqueeelle6287 Chris took the high road. He still kept Will in mind , the audience, the oscars, viewers etc Chris Rock is a CLASS act and handled it like a total boss 👏
@@HumbleAstronaut I think I was pretty clear that I'm not disputing that. Like I said earlier, I'm not judging what he did, I admire how he handled the entire situation. The concern is how his decision is being perceived. For some people, pressing charges is the only way to stand up to bullies. People might be pressured out of choosing that option because Chris Rock is considered a hero for not pressing charges. Bullies and non-bullied people will find every reason for a victim to keep the status quo.
Doesn’t matter if Chris Rock says he wanted Will Smith to stay, you just don’t do that to another human and get away with it, anyone else would have been escorted out
This wasn't one guy hitting another guy in the street though. The Academy could've taken all kinds of actions against Will if they wanted to but no one knew for sure if it was staged or real. Everyone was confused.
Damn right . And being threatened after. It's Official Will Smith has mental health issues. He's a Kanye case. I heard afterwards he said he he 'defends women'-I guess from having to roll their eyes it's kind of a false equivalency there I think
If anyone has heard the podcast where Chris Rock opens up about being bullied when he was younger it makes this whole situation so much worse. He was beaten and punched so much in school his defense was to joke and accept it. Very similar to what happened at the oscars. Just sad to see that he was probably brought back to that moment.
OMG! That's so heartbreaking. He really showed class beyond measure after he Will Smith violently assaulted him. He probably had horrible nightmares or some other type of ptsd that night reliving his childhood trauma. I hope he's doing well. Because getting bullied by others (especially kids) is sometime not easy to get over as we grow up into good, competent and well behaved adults.
Uh...his show.."everybody hates chris". However, It actually makes sense..why he became a comedian. Victims of verbal abuse bullying, usually become verbal bullies when they're older.
Chris Rock showed an exceedingly rare level of professionalism that we don’t see all too often anymore. He also couldn’t have been more of a gentleman or understanding to the dynamics of so many people so very quickly. I am of the belief that someone so witty must be very intelligent to be able to think on the spot like that, but this is a whole other level of intelligence, emotional or otherwise. Some people say “the show must go on,” Chris Rock embodies it! If our kids want to look up to actors, he’s one that I certainly hope they do look up to. An amazing man of amazing character!
The way Will walks towards Chris with his head low so he wouldnt see it coming and then goes back to his seat with a smirk.. Its such a disgusting entitled behavior!!! He knew Chris would be so humiliated to fight back or do anything. And then to humiliate him even more he curses and yells at him.. Such a bully behavior!!!
The funny thing is, His narcissistic “wife” got what she wanted by manipulating him, to the point of violence against a peaceful comedian Even funnier, his kids think this callous act of cowardice was justified and even a moment to be proud of Funny thing is, a guy that could’ve help the situation, Denzel Washington, instead empowered him after he acted the way he did The same guy that once said “Let the animal wipe themselves” That my friend, is how a lot racist folks and even nice thoughtful people see this even moving forward They fought to have a spot at this event, The Oscars This is what now remains His kids think he’s a hero, the real victims
So well put. They look on will’s face after he delivered that punch. It was a self satisfied smirk and I agree Chris deserves recognition and thanks from the academy for being a gentleman and going on with the show. He saved the day.
Uhmm... I think that smirk is not of rejoyce, it's more like repressed anger, he's like trying unsuccessfully to pretend composure after that cruel behaviour, he's more of a puppet I guess, when he talks about his childhood, he mentions how his mother was in an abusive relationship, but now history repeats with him and his wife.
If Will never cursed at Chris people would have thought it was a joke to this day. The cursing just poured gasoline over the entire situation and made it real. Will went from dumb to dumber.
Chris Rock eviscerated Will Smith and Jada Pinkett in his Netflix Special "Selective Outrage" a year after the incident at the Oscars. Shakespeare said "Revenge is a dish best served cold" and I think Chris Rock got that message. His comments were worth the wait.
Imagine hiring a bunch of people to to put on a performance and someone from the audience hits your headliner. I don't care whether Chris Rock wanted to press charges or not, you have a responsibility to those people you hired to create a safe environment free of violence. Not allow it to happen and then shower the assaulter with accolades.
How prophetic whoever coined the phrase: 'You can tell a person's true character in the face of adversity' Will showed his lack of character and Chris exemplified Extraordinary Character above and beyond most men.
Unfortunately Rock is spineless. He should be pressing charges. He should have got the LAPD in there and in fact the state of California is spineless. They should prosecute Will even without Rocks consent. Will is an assalter on the loose. And his wife has gonorrhea.

The more times you see the assault played out, the more sickening it is. Truly shocking that there was no immediate consequence for Will. He has sullied his award and his reputation.
Literally everyone would’ve forgotten that joke in 15 seconds. But Will Smith’s actions is what made us all remember it for years to come. He screwed himself even more trying to fix the “issue” lmao
The Aussie term for it is " Gutless Wonders"... all mouth and no substance. I have lost all respect for Will Smith and I salute Chris Rock. It was easy to see who is the mature professional Man and who is the immature Boy
After he was slapped and Will Smith was screaming at him, Rock started to say, “I could, ohhh okaay…” and left it there. Yup, Chris, the restraint you showed was almost superhuman…you COULD HAVE, but you DIDN’T. He is brilliant, quick-minded, funny and incredible.
" And Chris was just keeping his head when everybody else was losing theirs" now that is the stuff that makes a greatness, to be able to keep his head and even smile because he saw the bigger picture, people were there to be recognised for their work, he didn't forget that, and went on to make sure that was done. Chris showed humility in the face of humiliation, that earned my absolute respect for him, and yes he was raised and raised well.

Look at the producer putting the blame on Chris for why Will wasn't escorted out.

He should have been AT LEAST removed from the building.
Packer is trying to shift the all responsibility on Chris Rock. What a weasel.
this guy is clearly washing his hands.
Yes exactly thanks for making it clear there had to be some form of consequences
Exactly. This producer is what is wrong with Hollywood.
If a crime is committed I don’t think you need the victim to be involved. A crime is a crime
Assault is sadly different. The police are under no obligation to prosecute for assault.
Chris Rock is more of a man than Will Smith will ever be. Winning an Oscar and getting a standing ovation doesn't make you a good person.
Lmao what ?! Will smith is more of man then you my guy

He’s a stand up Comedian
So, not only is Chris Rock one of the greatest comedians of all time, he's also a wonderful soul. Kudos to you, Chris. You were the real man on the stage.
I’d rethink that beautiful soul statement. He admitted to cheating on his wife and being unfaithful. Not what I’d call a beautiful soul.
who cares why are we still talking about this. obviously it didn't affect chris that much if he said will should still stay. It's a slap
No, Chris rock enabled a giga narcissist to single-handedly utterly ruin the standing of the Academy - as it stands in it's paltry state.
I have never liked him especially the Asian jokes in Oscar couples years back. But he is now my hero. Will Smith should be removed of his membership in the Academy
@@AnimeZone247 you obviously care enough to be watching this, the 1000th video on the subject.
Absolutely. Enough of the boys will be boys attitude!
They are waiting for everyone to forget about it.
Chris Rock was such a professional. He kept his composure the entire time.
And that's what I loved about that whole moment! He never fell apart, where other comedians would've erupted and took it there.
Rock solid!
He was so professional that night, and he saved the event
This feels like blaming the victim. I’m sure Chris didn’t want to be the one responsible for throwing Will out. The people in charge of the show should’ve done something
Yea, this whole interview sounds like damage control where the Oscars are trying to say "we did everything right but Chris stopped us". Even by saying the joke wasn't in their approved script is saying that he did it to himself
@@christinew1981 I hope he never hosts again. These guys are clowns

Glorious.
He’s only been doing it his entire life @ a high level
Chris is a man who's at peace and has a pure heart, for someone to be assaulted in front of an audience and a world wide broadcast and still compose yourself and carry on, on top of that not press charges, that's so astonishing...Much respect for Chris....How he delt with the situation is so admirable.
Yet this producer Will Packer just threw him under the bus by saying it was Chris Rock who didn't want him to leave. He basically tried to blame Chris Rock for the reason Will Smith wasn't physically removed. What cheap cop out! I guess Chris Rock's camp is saying that is totally false. Chris didn't want to press charges but never said he didn't want him removed!
that was dumb by Chris and most likely he will regret it
HAHAHAHA.
Whole world? 9 people were watching. 🤣
The silver lining is that a!l involved are black. No race issue
Pathetic.
Cancel will smith. Easy
Absolutely!!!! smith can go danse with the devil - Chris, sir you ROCK!!!!!!!!
If the academy doesn’t do something anything whether Chris wants it or not they are wrong to me.
Will's proof that age doesnt make people wiser or kinder. I guess neither does Scientology.
Well said!!!

Yup and they all witnessed it!!
He could still press charges in the future. He clearly didn’t want to ruin the event more than it already had been. That’s class.

Dang...the more I hear about the altercation between Chris Rock and Will Smith the more respect I gain for Rock and lose more for Smith.
Chris Rock displayed what real men do. Controlled his emotions and not act on them and acted like a true adult with common sense. I respect him so much because I would like to think I would act the same way but I don’t if I can.
This hurts me to my core. They allowed Chris Rock to be a victim of assault just to “save” their precious show? Had it been a woman up there what would have happened? Disgusting. And then giving Will Smith a standing ovation for his performance? Sickening and shameful.

Exactly ‼️‼️

Perhaps Chris Rock is a Christian. You cannot understand the ways of God until you read His book.
The laughing, the physical assault, the refusal to be removed, the crying on stage, and then the laughing and getting jiggy with it after party as if nothing happens? What a world class act Will Smith is. The thought that disturbed me most is that the people thought he was standing for his wife? Is beyond hypocracy of the celebrities who was giving Smith the ovation, what a joke those celebrities are.
all around douchebag Will Smiths
You're damn right. He just stood for the macho hubby. Because he felt he had to defend her honor. Not because he wanted too. He thought people were going to point et him for laughing with others when finally, he's going to lose more after the violence
What goes around comes right back around ... Seems like Wills true character came out ...
Yep I agree 100% they all clapped him like a hero it made me sick literally the guys a scumbag

And they should have arrested him. This was ridiculous.
Chris Rock deserves an Oscar for his poise and professionalism in handling the scenario in the way that he did! What a perfect gentleman and host!

However, Much of what is considered humor today is not humor..

Perhaps, Chris knew he overstepped A limit..I hope so..
Arresting Will Smith...May have taught Hkm self control .
But the greatest lesson is living what He did and how that will affect Him ..now
Perhaps, His reaction..is from pent-up anger..Reportedly they have a very strange marriage ....if it can be called a marriage.. sick relationship

When I think about it while reading comments I almost did I now have tremendous respect for the man Who is Chris Rock

In a few months, perhaps in August, Will Smith does a big interview where he tearfully says he wasn't himself and is now in therapy. After that he directs a movie about women in the Navy Seals and writes a book called "Vessel of Love" (with co-author Vladimir P.). After all, the Smith family motto is "That's how we do it."

Leave it up to black people to bring violence to the Oscars. Is this what George Felon Floyd got choked-out for?
"emotionally damaged"? He is just a sociopath who was so full and happy of himself after assaulting someone (at least the 3rd time...), then he walked up the stage and took his stupid little oscar like nothing happened.
It’s not easy to do the right thing.
nothing against you but i'm tired of reading "emotionally damaged" when it means "man who already had 400 million dollars keeps taking money to do bad reality shows about ruining his marriage for youtube". if you want emotional damage, go talk to kids who get beat routinely or soldiers who came back without half their friends

i don't to hear nothing abput people saying black men don't protect black women no more
This is a an example of how out of touch with reality and what a warped sense of right and wrong is so pervasive in the entertainment industry.
EXCUSE ME, WILL EXPLAIN WHY I SHOULD GIVE A f*UCK WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY?

I think it immature to joke, domestic or internationally, about a medical condition that upwards of 7 million people, in the US alone, suffer from. It's absurd.
@@speway I guess we should ban bald jokes since jada is balding
Oh assuming this was not orchestrated (I was highly suspicious at the time still not sure) Chris handled it like a pro that he is!!

They should not have been asking if he wanted them to take Mr. Smith away, they should have just done exactly that! Are you kidding? Remove anyone from anyplace where there isn't a cage or boxing ring and assault is part of their action.
If it was a women in a home with boyfriend, husband, NO QUESTIONS asked.
FR. Why they asking the person who was assaulted on stage if they want to press charges? Most men will refuse to press charges. The “producer” needs to grow some balls. The Oscar’s are trying to just save face but in reality did nothing.
yup, just think if it was you or me doing what Will did and what would happen to us.

Jada totally owns and manipulated Will. Both Will and Jada are really horrible ppl
Just imagine will smith being walked out in cuffs.
They could have had will Smith removed
yes but there are multiple producers. No one person can make that call.
James Avery is looking down at Will saying “ ooh simba what has happened to you ? “
That or now block him for every Oscars events, but he can keep his stupid Oscar. His arrogance was disgusting!
He should have never been given it in the first place.
Exactly...
Chris was severely bullied when he was young . I can’t imagine the immense pain/humiliation he is experiencing.
Will should be very thankful and should have apologised to Chris the same night . Because, the ‘REAL MAN’ refused to have him arrested .
It makes me sad because it might have brought back those memories when he was bullied but he stood his ground and was the better person.
In his face you can tell that this is not a new feeling for him, but not one that he wanted to feel again.

@@daniell5740 it's pointless to defend Will Smith's actions without making a total ass out of yourself

Duh, might be FOUR STORIES by the time this is "all resolved ?"

My exact thoughts
Trying to save his own ass because he f’d up big time. Too much of a wuss to actually do the right thing.
Chris Packer doesn’t care and is just a coward like most of Hollywood
What a epic episode of everybody hates Chris

@@HumbleAstronaut I think I was pretty clear that I'm not disputing that. Like I said earlier, I'm not judging what he did, I admire how he handled the entire situation.
On point!
Agree!
I did and wow..I got such respect for him and admiration he's one helluva human being!
All this for a woman who never wanted to be with him. They weren’t even together at this point
Chris lived up to his last name! What a man!
Chris is a real Rock .🙋
It's staged. Who's best actor on that stage?
Yup, get rocked.
Wooow they finna try everything. They think we stupid stupid. We know it's staged BUCKOS!
@@condorX2 Where is your proof?
Chris Rock showed an exceedingly rare level of professionalism that we don’t see all too often anymore. He also couldn’t have been more of a gentleman or understanding to the dynamics of so many people so very quickly. I am of the belief that someone so witty must be very intelligent to be able to think on the spot like that, but this is a whole other level of intelligence, emotional or otherwise. Some people say “the show must go on,” Chris Rock embodies it! If our kids want to look up to actors, he’s one that I certainly hope they do look up to. An amazing man of amazing character!
Completely agree, Chris rock is amazing, i have a whole new world of respect for Chris after what happened
My respect for Will Smith has evaporated. My respect for Cris Rock is soaring.
@@drdr76 Good for you.
Totally agree. Chris Rock embodies all the characteristics of a man of peace, integrity and respect. Seriously, only a Buddha would respond like that.
Chris NEEDS to file charges!!
The funny thing is,
His narcissistic “wife” got what she wanted by manipulating him, to the point of violence against a peaceful comedian
Even funnier, his kids think this callous act of cowardice was justified and even a moment to be proud of
Funny thing is, a guy that could’ve help the situation, Denzel Washington, instead empowered him after he acted the way he did
The same guy that once said
“Let the animal wipe themselves”
That my friend, is how a lot racist folks and even nice thoughtful people see this even moving forward
They fought to have a spot at this event, The Oscars
This is what now remains
His kids think he’s a hero, the real victims
So well put. They look on will’s face after he delivered that punch. It was a self satisfied smirk and I agree Chris deserves recognition and thanks from the academy for being a gentleman and going on with the show. He saved the day.
Uhmm... I think that smirk is not of rejoyce, it's more like repressed anger, he's like trying unsuccessfully to pretend composure after that cruel behaviour, he's more of a puppet I guess, when he talks about his childhood, he mentions how his mother was in an abusive relationship, but now history repeats with him and his wife.
Imagine how he is behind closed doors
He wasn’t a headliner. He was a presenter that didn’t even follow the script.
How prophetic whoever coined the phrase: 'You can tell a person's true character in the face of adversity'
Will showed his lack of character and Chris exemplified Extraordinary Character above and beyond most men.
Unfortunately Rock is spineless. He should be pressing charges. He should have got the LAPD in there and in fact the state of California is spineless. They should prosecute Will even without Rocks consent. Will is an assalter on the loose. And his wife has gonorrhea.
I agree Jesse James
Everyone has their weak moments and Everyone has their strongest moments... character doesn't define a person completely, but only in that moment that they are expressing... strip all the ego and all that "defines" us we are all the same self... to judge a person is to judge your... self...
@@Ben-eh1qt If you think his actions were that of a spineless man than I don't know what to tell you. Chris Rock has come out the other side of this looking like a much bigger man than Will and lots of people are seeing it.
Very well said.
seeing chris's face afterwards and knowing his history of being bullied as a kid, i was sick to my stomach... those monsters who all stood up and cheered the slap, and jada laughing.. worst part is Will didnt bother to apologize afterwards and it wasnt until he knew he was in trouble before he did.. chris should sue him for an ungodly amount
Yes he should be arrested...that prick
Yes
Jim Carrey said it best Hollywood now is spineless reason why he doesn’t go anymore to this award
Me too! He was the only person with class in the room. Nobody respects Hollywood anymore.
Yeah I would of sued for a billion cuz that's gonna be a memory and that video will be on forever and put his ass in jail for awhile
Rock handled the moment better than most would have. He chose to be professional above all and shows how great his character is.
The attack is really sickening the more you watch it.
It still looks totally fake to me.
He just made a mistake, he is still rich
But there will be consequences for Will. Rock did his job and kept the show going.
A-list audience but noone stood up for Chris. Jim Carrey was right, Hollywood is spineless.
I totally agree!!!
