  • For 4 years my 2001 Chevy Tahoe has had a P0440 Evaporation System engine code that comes on triggering the check engine light in the dash. Also, I could smell gas immediately after every fill up but there was never any fuel dripping on the ground until recently.
The 4 parts stores I called wouldn't sell just this rusted out metal tube. Instead they could only sell the metal tube, rubber hoses and the gas cap metal assembly for $450-500. This repair shows how to prepare the old metal tubes for fibreglass and also shows some techniques for competing the job.
After a month, there have been no more leaks after fillups. The check engine code did not automatically go out so I used a code reader to manually clear the P440 code and the light hasn't come back on :)

could always use a exhaust elbow and use a mig welder to run a bead on each end to make the rib for the clamp to grab

I use chop strand mat to do curved auto body work , it's messy but the fibers give and shift
to contour to the curve of the piece your working on

I did my filler pipe, 2009 cobalt, with fiberglass. After I did it i thought of an idea of putting the fiberglass on dry, then wrap sewing thread around it to hold it in place , then brush on the resin.

Good idea. That would be fine provided you use multiple layers, which should be done anyway

I tried that and the 3 vehicles that were checked had filler necks in terrible condition.

its a good repair but gas generates static electricity as it moves thru a pipe. Probably nothing will happen but using the wrong type of rubber or material could cause an explosion. Those materials are tested extensively.

For the same money on the cost of the fibreglass Go online buy the filler neck Even in 2015 that filler neck is no where near $500 .. another would be the auto wreckers Fibreglass breaks down with gas on it

My repair is holding up fine. The fiberglass covered pipe will likely outlast the vehicle.

Thank you David. I will just go buy one. Although the video is nice...Your comment is more helpful than the video. I don't have any of the materials needed. But...if all else fail, I will replay this video.
