  • Timișoara, Romania is incredible. Let me just start by saying that.
We ended up extending our time in Timisoara when we return our rental car because we loved it so much! The city has 3 squares absolutely overflowing with interesting history and they are all in walking distance of each other. So we set out today to see all three squares and try and soak in the culture!
We visit Union Square (Piața Unirii) Liberty Square (Piața Libertății) and Victory Square (Piața Victoriei) We loved them all, even if the name of them escaped us sometimes!
    Thanks for watching!

Hello, there are actually 4 town squares, the Opera Square, Union Square, Liberty Square and Traian Square. The last one is actually being redesigned and has the potential to be the prettiest of them all.

In Timisoara everyone goes to the three squares which are awesome yes but there are other nice atractions for example the old dam up the river and the area there with the stonehenge. It depends what you like. us from Timisoara we always thought it was a really boring city and its amaizing that tourists come to Timisoara. I guess maby because the central area is indeed big, plenty of space, there are parks in the central area, plenty of pubs with good food, some events there, some nice architecture, animated area at night with some music and concerts. I guess the atraction is that everything is close in the central area where there are also parks and you can easely get to the river also (im sure you went to the river and walked) where there is some live music as well and some parties. Surprisingly in other big european cities, it was hard to find a party and there were less squares close to another with no cars around. Surprinsingly there is a lot of space in the central area in TImisoara, because that area was designed under a military rule which meant large spaces for armies to move. TImisoara was last built basically as a military fortress. The large squares were necesarry for troops to deploy under necesity. The center of the city was a square done afterwards so its a bonus square. The parks some of them were also built after demolishing the old walls.
I guess the city has some unique advantages, and its cool that all the objectives are in the central area. Because if that area wouldnt exist, there wouldnt be much to see in Timisoara or Timis. I mean yeah sure there are some other places in the city also if you walk towards Balcescu area. The city would have more potential if more historical areas would be fully renovated and if more trees were planted...
Its fascinating that tourists visit Timisoara because the city never ever in its history was touristic. In the communist area it was a factory type city and even before there were only factories and the military baracks. Before that there is the Medieval Castle which unfortunaly lies in degradation.
Timisoara also has very poor soroundings, no natural park, no big lake, no tourist atractions nearby just a big flat field with agriculture.
I thought that Timisoara sucks when it comes to public bathrooms but i went to barcelona and find NONE. at least in TM there are a few.
Unfortunally Timisoara is suffocated by cars (sure if you only visit the central area you might not feel it), has very few parking spaces, the drivers are a mess...
I guess the mall is big has like a suspended garden there which is nice, some trees, the foodcourt... and its also close to the center. In other European cities there were 100 different malls but no big one to say wow. In Timisoara its a nice mall and you can visit it just for the garden and the music outside which is nice.
Timisoara is a city that has a definitely nicer and more interesting center contrasting very hard to some new areas. I mean sure, you can say that about any city mostly

I am not sure of the exact date of your visit to the city, but 3rd of August is the city anniversary and usually between 1st and 3rd of August there are celebrations with parades and concerts. It celebrates the date when the Banat region was unified with Romania in 1919. The city area seems to be inhabited since before the roman occupation and later is being mentioned as the roman castrum Temesiensis. Over the years the city has been under ottoman and Austro-Hungarian occupation and the area surrounding it was a huge marshland. This is the reason why the black plague hit the city many times, taking with it a lot of lives. The statues from Union and Liberty square commemorate the victims fallen to the plague. This is also the reason why you can find here the oldest beer factory in Romania, built in 1718. Drinking beer was safer than water, since you had to filter the water in the beer making process. It wasn't until the 19th century when the Habsburgs created the Bega canal that is going through the middle of the city and a lot of other hydro-graphical projects were done to drain the surrounding marshlands.
