What great times they were. A beautiful sweet-spot in history before mobile phones and social media arrived and removed the simple fun out of everything, and began the destruction of society as we know it. Treasure those memories.
All the Alan Murphy fans commenting is really neat to me. He was amazing... The funny thing is I had no idea who he was in the 80's, just liked "whoever that guy playing guitar is" it was later in life when I started playing bass that I learned. Just amazing. That call and answer interplay at the end of Innocence is amazing...

Peter Cox and Alan Murphy were having such fun in the Coda and when you listen to Peter ad libbing you can hear the influence of Alan's sweeping risings and falls particularly using the floating bridge - a master, in complete control of his improvising which he honed with Sfx.

Innocence, the Bangs and Crashes version, is my favourite pop/rock song of all time. I have a few other favourites, like Highway Star, but equal, not above. Driving, singing along with Peter Cox and listening to Alan Murphy, my daughter (who has a great voice) singing with me, full lungs, full voice, is always, always a rush. We lost Alan Murphy way too early and I wonder what Go West could have achieved, if only in terms of delighting me, if Cox, Drummie and Murphy had spent decades together. Together, as you can see here, they were magnificent and great, great entertainment.
What an amazing guitarist Alan Murphy was, and along with the rest of Go West, absolutely amazing live set this. So much talent on that stage. Great days!
Alan Murphy was a guitar genius. Haven't seen this clip before so thanks for sharing. Check out his work with SFX. I was a keyboard session player in the '80s (and played with Alan a few times) and my idea of perfection would have been playing in that band! Legends all. Tony Beard also on drums for a lot of their work.
I used to see Alan with SFX at the Cricketers, although my initial reason for going was to watch Felix Krish their legendary bassist. Wonderful musicianship.
The only documentary I saw featuring Alan was Level 42: Fait Accompli and he had to put up with David Hepworth being a d**khead to him. Kept his cool and made the a**hole look silly.
I've written a book about a masculine talented bloke with thinnng hair who is held back by His best Pal who is a dark haired femboy. They too have a little smart arse in Their background who dies of Aids also. There is tons of similarities to This Lot. 😂
Great band, incredible guitar player. First heard Alan on Bangs&Crashes 86, and liked his note sequences, very unusual and emotive. He kicked arse in Level 42 as well, his version of Its Over is poignant.
One of my favourite bands of the 80s. Alan Murphy was a big influence on me as a guitarist. I recently put up lessons on how to play the solos to 'Don't Look Down' and 'Haunted' on You Tube. Just great stuff, thanks for sharing!
I've seen a lot of the worlds greatest drummers over the years, from Bill Bruford to Tony Williams, Vinnie and Weckl. But no one has blown me away more than Tony Beard! It was 85 or 86 and I so Go West perform at a small theatre on the campus of Brown University in Providence, RI. I had never heard of Tony before this night and I knew one bar into the first tune that he was a special player! Groove, energy, power, and unbelievable chops! Different chops though, this was a bit before Weckl came on the scene and blew every drummer away with his "new" style of playing! I was about 25 back then, and in the 30 plus years since then I often think back to that special night.
Nice tribute to a great underrated talent that is Tony Beard. I heard him with Morrissey/Mullen band- very tasteful and musical player. I have always wondered why he wasn’t more talked about...
Tony Beard - I've only just watched this clip and I thought I recognised the drummer now with the name I totally relate - I've got an old Hall & Oats VHS video of a gig in Japan and Tony Played on that - he was a inspiration to me when I was learning the drums, but I'd never seen him with short hair!! Thanks for the note.
Imagine being 10 feet away from Beard and Murphy blasting away in SFX at the Cricketers pub in the summer of '83. O yeah, that was me. Overwhelmingly awesome, huge grin for days afterwards. RIP Alan.
Would be happy to but unfortunately I don't have any facilities to be able to do that I'm afraid. If anything turns up I'll leave you a message here though. Cheers!
The whole band is so tight, this transports me straight back to 1985, I remember hearing the genius that is Alan Murphy and thinking how does he do that?
My sister was friends with some of Allan Murphy's friends, most notably another incredible guitarist Nico Ramsden. Him and Allan were great friends and I got to play Allans PRS guitar which Nico inherited. Amazing memories. What a fantastic era for music x
Increible , que gran banda. Que buen groove tenian los 80s, el sophisti-pop es uno de los generos que representa en parte a Go West y es de los mejores que hay, muchas bandas , Prefab Sprout , Everything but The Girl, Swing out Sisters, etc, etc,
Back in the day, I set the video recorder (aww, how quaint) for "The Tube" and found that due to some kind of dispute, Go West would play for almost the entire show. Sheer joy. Over time it was recorded over. Imagine my horror when a mate rang me up and said "Have you heard about Alan Murphy? Dead Mate... AIDS". So good to watch this again.
I always hated this band - that genre of music, but I saw this when it aired and was blown away by the guitarist. Kept an eye out for Alan Murphy after that. He was a great player. 🍻
i remember watching this broadcast go west had allready been on and at the last min sommerville left bronski beat and go west did a second set the guitarist lost a string during second set and you could see how stressed he was..........and this was before they hit it big
Thanks for uploading! In a time of my life when i was really influenced by live music this stands out as one of the big memories of stuff i enjoyed then. Totally underrated band and they absolutely stormed this performance on The Tube.Great vocals by Mr Cox and Alan Murphy was a great guitarist who i loved for Level 42 as well. Love the 12 inch versions they did live. The Tube was a brilliant programme...wish we had something similar now...rather than the snobby Later With Jools Holland
Hi, it is a great performance, glad you liked it. Unfortunately its all i had in my huge collection of videos i used to edit together in the 80s. This seemed to be one of a few performances not already uploaded by other folk. I have waded through hours of stuff looking for this sort of thing ! glad i had this though and that its unique on here, regds Andrew
Alan Murphy......... what can you say...... I loved him then and thought he was one of the best guitar players I had ever seen, after Larry and a couple of other guys.. Holdsworth maybe? Brilliant player.
Barry, glad you enjoyed it and glad i had it lurking on a tape all these years No other way to see this great stuff other than people keeping and uploading this sort of material. Regds Andrew
Playing "Don't Look Down" live requires an expert synth player. No surprise, then, that they employed the services of Mr. Peter-John Vettese. Look him up, you'll understand why.
Andrew... After years of trying to get this... My mate handed me a DVD tonight with the full episode of the tube which he copied from the VHS tape he found in his loft... It has the full Go west set...It has level 42... And Mark king performing a solo on his Jaydee bass... It also has womac and womac featuring guy Pratt on bass.. Robert palmer.... And sting... Message me your address and I'll send you a copy

I was the keys tech on this tour. What a great guitarist. Since the early 80's only Adrian Belew Alan,Tommy Emmanuel and MartonTaylor have done anything new/interesting guitar-wise. (Marr from the Smiths was OK but boring for the last 20 years.)
With respect Alan's guitar skills wasted on Go West. Sadly when he popped up with the far more suitable Level 42 they were on a slight downhill slope and then tragically his health deteriorated :(
Not his clean glassy tone, that's spot on, his lead sound in the solo to Don't Look Down from 8:09, when he starts to use the trem, it warbles and you can hear shrill, fuzzy overtones when he lifts the bar. He used a Fender Champ for solos, small/brittle sound, cuts thru the mix great with post EQ, but not live. If you can't hear that then you have shit ears, or you haven't listened to the album version enough.
***** I disagree. The Aria Esprit was one of his main guitars during Go West and while I can't be sure if he used it on the album, I would say his tone here is being coloured due to the power amps that are boosting his signal because of the low output of the champ. It's all subjective anyway, maybe he liked it that way. I was just pointing out that it is quite different to the sound on the record and not to my taste.
11 years after this was posted we're still loving Alan's phenomenal playing arent we? Yes, of course we are.
What great times they were. A beautiful sweet-spot in history before mobile phones and social media arrived and removed the simple fun out of everything, and began the destruction of society as we know it. Treasure those memories.
Always a big fan of Go West. Great live set. Doesn't get much better than this.

Peter Cox singing is superb live and pitch perfect without in-ear monitoring....respect!
RIP Alan Murphy great playing. The irony that Jeff Beck wrote The Tube title song. Sounds like he's going direct to a desk.
What an amazing guitarist Alan Murphy was, and along with the rest of Go West, absolutely amazing live set this. So much talent on that stage. Great days!
So great to see Alan Murphy playing. RIP Alan.
Alan Murphy - really great UK guitarist, needs more recognition. Ground breaking, great feel and damn nice bloke too.
Yeah. Sadly missed. He was a great player.
Yep, a lovely man and ultra, ultra talented ❤
Love the band the songs, Peter Cox voice and as for Alan Murphy - what a legend !!
What a modest and nice guy AM. RIP
Love the low note Trem Drop ! Al !
I remember watching this when it was on and being totally blown away by Alan Murphy. Such a great player. And a great band. Loved Go West.
Murphy! Genius on guitar, taken way too early. Look up his solo stuff. Amazing. RIP Alan. The Queen's Head Hackney! Great Times.

Alan Murphy was one awesome guitar player. So, so inventive!!!
Without a doubt the best set ever played on the Tube, and the whole band were excellent. Great atmosphere, the mid 80's as I remember it.
A documentary should be made about the band and Alan Murphy

Alan Murphy. What a Musician. I wish there was more info about him and his work. An incredibly notable UK Session Guitar Player.

I'm glad the sound guy didn't leave the solos buried in the mix...quite the opposite... what a great performance...
Alan Murphy R.I.P .. legendary
You can really hear the Allan Holdsworth influence, great guitar player in his own right.

Monster solo on Don't Look Down
Murphy was obviously an acolyte of Allan Holdsworth, but a fantastic player none the less.
Fabulous band. Top notch!
Alan Murphy brilliant ,
What a fantastic piece of musical arrangement. Why don't you come back guys and show them how to do it live !!!!!!
They've never gone away. Lucky me, I've seen them three times in the last month. They are still just as amazing live.

Lives in the States. Played for Hall & Oates for a while. Was with Francis Dunnery fairly recently.

Why did Drummie bother playing guitar 🎸?
The one thing that strikes me from re-watching this after many years is that Peter Cox and Richard Drummie have a serious love in to the detriment of the band- especially Alan Murphy, who is totally the main man in the band. It's embarrassing watching Richard Drummie go through the motions miming guitar when it's totally obvious that Alan is wrapping his skills around the track (and indeed the band). With respect Alan's guitar skills wasted on Go West. Sadly when he popped up with the far more suitable Level 42 they were on a slight downhill slope and then tragically his health deteriorated :(
His sound and playing were part of the band. He was in the right place.
As much as I love Go West, you can see the arrogance they had, even at that stage. Always a big fall.
So arrogant they allowed the backing singers to take centre stage and sing a whole song while Peter Cox performed backing vocals for them ?!
The last arrogant people in pop! What nonsense you write.
Alan Murphy's tone doesn't work live, too fuzzy and shrill. Great player though RIP
Agreed absolute rubbish . Matt what planet are you on ?

Matt Taylor Alan got a deal with Aria, but he generally disliked them live as they were always drifting out of tune.
+tryptychUK That's cause the original Aria trems weren't as good as the Kahlers he later put on the guitars for the 2nd album
