Brilliant - thank you for that. I'm so gutted Alan Murphy has left us. I saw him in '88 with Level 42. Such a sad loss at only 35 years old. Decades of music we missed out on. But lovely to see his work is still being studied and enjoyed here.
Fascinating lines that sound fresh and exciting as if they were brand new:) thanks for demonstrating this Pete.. be cool to see more on Alans playing from that live show including his cool chords and rhythm grooves :-) 😎👌
Thanks very much Alex! He was such a wonderful guitar player and deserves to be much better known. It’s been really encouraging the positive response I’ve had to this video, I’m certainly planning to do some more on him in the future
Hi Pete, Really enjoyed this breakdown, you really should cover the next part of the solo where Alan does that really nice run back up the fretboard He's one of my top 5 all time players, so really pleased to see his stuff still being covered
Thanks Tony, he’s a wonderful player, one of my favourites too. That section of his live solo jumped out for me so I thought it would be interesting to look at. I might cover the whole solo from the record at some point, although it’s been done elsewhere already
Must admit Pete I thought Alan's guitar playing was pretty good and his session work was pretty amazing and when you think about it there was a lot of Eddie Van Halen clones during that time but Alan's playing just sounded really fluid and original even though it had the undertones of Alan Holdsworth. All my best wishes 😎😎😎😎😎😎
Very, very tasty solo. Alan was a great guitar player, and always had a nod to the other Allan (Holdsworth that is). Great lesson Pete. RIP Alan and Allan.
Thanks for the video! I remember the first time I saw Alan play this solo and I couldn't believe my eyes and ears. Especially the latter part of the solo where he's just shredding like crazy. Any idea what scale he's playing in that part? Whatever it is, I doubt that my fingers could ever reach that speed, haha.
It would be great to if there’s a positive reaction to this. I’ve transcribed lots of his ideas, and did a workshop on him a couple of weeks back for Roth Academy
For more classic Alan Murphy, check out my video looking at his solo on Level 42’s “Heaven In My Hands’ here: th-cam.com/video/Na0RutYixEk/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for covering one of my favorite licks of all time, RIP Alan
Thanks Erik! It’s a great lick isn’t it. Love Alan Murphy - he deserves to be much better known

Thanks Steve, he was such a wonderful player, it’s great to see he still has a following all these years later
Brilliantly described. Great player was Alan.

Thanks very much Eryl! Great to see & play with you again last weekend
Great stuff Pete, I remember watching that show on a Saturday on the BBC and being completely blown away by Alan's playing .
Thanks Wayne, and thanks for the coffee! I remember seeing it on tv at the time as well - really enjoyed watching it back after all this time.
That's a great lick Pete, thanks for breaking it down. Best to you 👍🎸
Thanks JazzStrat! It’s great isn’t it, and I think the elements of it are really applicable to all kinds of playing 🤞
Just discovered your playing today while watching Shpongle, also for the 1st time. Knocked out. Excellent stuff. Highly inspiring.
Thanks very much Ed, much appreciated!

@@PeteCallard I'm glad you did, I always loved that falling down the stairs but landing on your feet feel of it

He had such a distinctive sound and approach, I love his playing

Thanks for your message - re the end of the solo, I’d need to have a listen again, but on the record it’s an E minor run
Will you do any more on Alan Murphy?

Check out Chris Poland. Similarly Allan Holdsworth inspired.
Thanks Andy, will do. I know his playing with Megadeth, but haven’t really checked him out since
@@PeteCallardoh mate!!
