    great videos! Thank you. Fixen to rebuild an 8.25 this weekend. Just bearings, no lockers, keeping it open for a daily driver. Your videos helped a ton.

    Hey great video!! Seems like a lot to torque the carrier bearings to 90 ft pounds, is that on the homemade socket that goes throught the tube?
    And If one side is torqued then would that mean both sides are torqued without going to both side?
    Also what the heck do the little bolts on the bearing caps do?
    Sorry for all the questions but im just doing my prep research before attempting this on my nomad van out in the desert, its my home and i cant afford to eff this up..
    thanx again

    Hey man Thanks for the video. I need to replace my pinion bearing in my chrysler 8.25 01 cherokee XJ. If I'm just doing the bearing do I gotta go through all this? Hoping I can do the job myself in my driveway. Thanks.

      @rotorav8 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay Bourbon you really should since you are going to be in there. You can get away with just doing the pinion bearing and replacing the pinion shim that was in it. The new bearing should be the same thickness so if it was set right at first then it should be right with the new bearing. My thought is if the pinion bearing is bad the other bearings and seals are probably going too so why not do it all while it is all disassembled?

    Hey rusty, what did you torque the carrier bearing adjusters to after setting backlash? Once the bearing caps are torqued aren't you supposed to preload the carrier bearings by evenly torquing the adjustment screws?

    • @Rusty411
      @Rusty411  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Watupal the torque is 90 foot pound but Remember the torque is figures on the long extension you have to use to get through the tube so at the adjuster probably not that tight at the adjuster it's self also you have to torque the adjusters while the caps are snug before cap torque the caps lock the adjuster on a couple I've done so I usually snug the caps then torque the adjusters recheck back lash then the caps grease on all the bearing light grease slow break in period and should be good to go

      Rusty 411 okay cool, thanks. I torqued them to 150 ft/lbs after setting backlash and the bearing caps were already torqued. So far I haven't had any bearing failure but the gears ended up getting noisy and started galling the ring an pinion. Gonna have to rebuild it again soon before she blows lol

    What is the final torque for the side adjusters?

  • @feellnfroggy
    @feellnfroggy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    OH and used gears, watch for hairline or micro cracks. It may looks solid, but loud AF.

    If you don’t have that gauges to to measure side to side play in the carrier how do know what’s another way to gauge it.

    • @Rusty411
      @Rusty411  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to have the dail indicator to check it harbor freight has a cheap set up its then only way to get it right

  • @brianlundjr7193
    @brianlundjr7193 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    One question, did you concern yourself with pinion nut torque or solely rely on the preload?

    • @Rusty411
      @Rusty411  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian Lund Jr preload when you try to crush the sleeve you will see what I mean it takes about 300 foot pounds to crush it down

    No torque on the carrier bearings?,things will get loose.Some go 70lbs per side starting with the passenger side. Some go more, normal drive 70 should work.
