Re upload it under a different video title lool
Oy. I have worked inside the BBC, years ago. It has changed much since then, but I feel what is probably happening is that you have been noticed by an individual (or small group of them) who is now on some kind of vendetta. This means there is hope they will eventually get fired, moved or find another job, at which point the notices may cease. I really hope so. Beautiful valid and loved you are.
The unfortunate thing is that if that happens I'll likely never know unless I experimentally try uploading stuff with footage every now and then just to check.
I was thinking something similar.
Like a lazy employee at best or an Ass (Best mean word on yt I can use without it deleting my comment) of a person at worst.
@@CouncilofGeeks Yeah, the way the BBC is gaming the system, the lack of any possible accountability from them for the extra effort they create for you, and the lack of any responsibility from YT all conspire against you. But you have the council, you have us. We see what is happening and we are not, as Victoria would say, amused.
Question, I'm an Australian so not entirely sure how it works but is the BBC subject to freedom of information requests the way other gov entities are?
@@linus1703 There is an FOI act, and it does cover the BBC as a public authority, but not its journalism, art or literature, it is used for licensing fee issues. Ofcom handles complaints about the BBCs own content. Sadly, the UK is not so free with its information.
This is why when people manipulate footage from media, I don't immediately jump to "How dare they, are they plagiarizing??" Because sometimes you HAVE to use footage (and you shoot be able to, fair use) to criticize them
Isn't fair use a case-by-case thing?
@@Tillyard86 In the UK: it is "fair dealing" which differs from "fair use" in the US.
It is interesting that she mentioned only using stills:
"Fair dealing for criticism, review or quotation is allowed for any type of copyright work. Fair dealing with a work for the purpose of reporting current events is allowed for any type of copyright work other than a photograph. In each of these cases, a sufficient acknowledgement will be required.
As stated, a photograph cannot be reproduced for the purpose of reporting current events. The intention of the law is to prevent newspapers or magazines reproducing photographs for reporting current events which have appeared in competitor’s publications."
- UK "Exceptions to copyright" guidance.
Edit: "Fair dealing" IS determined on a case-by-case basis (from the same document):
"‘Fair dealing’ is a legal term used to establish whether a use of copyright material is lawful or whether it infringes copyright. There is no statutory definition of fair dealing - it will always be a matter of fact, degree and impression in each case. The question to be asked is: how would a fair-minded and honest person have dealt with the work?"
I admire you for how evidence-focused you are with all this.
I forget how susceptible I am to conspiracy until I hear someone intentionally avoiding it.
I respected that about her video, too. It's definitely hard to avoid slipping into conspiratorial thinking!
I've been doing Who videos for about 15 years, almost every single one gets blocked worldwide on release, mostly they get through on challenge but the BBC gets the ad rev.
The Flux review was different. They chose a certain bit of footage and claimed it 3 times (saying it was in 3 different episodes) and blocked it twice and monetised it once. I challenged all 3 and they decided all these were legit and the video is still blocked.
To make this even funnier, I once directed a microbudget documentary, parts of which ended up in a BBC documentary, where some people took the piss out of it. I wasn't asked and wasn't told about this until I saw the BBC documentary after it got released. And because I'm not a dick about it I feel I have the high ground.
Also pretty sure the BBC has taken down videos of mine for just mentioning A Fix with Sontarons, so I think sometimes fuckery is deliberately done.
I still can’t see your Twatty Who on Resolution which I suspect of because of this BS.
With the Flux video, have you considered putting up a “Fuck You BBC” sign in the parts where they claimed copyright? Even just as an experiment to see if they still take it down? lol
@@michaelhatton2477 Yeah, Resolution is gone. I challenged and they rejected it. Ironically I recently did a video that was just taking the big musical bits and replacing the songs (Sound of Drums, Power of the Doctor, The Giggle) and last time I checked it's still there. A musical shitpost is cool but a review is where they draw the line.
Not tried that, might do, but I'm very dejected about the whole thing. I get no ad rev from these vids, and constantly re-editing old videos and getting disappointed again and again is demoralising as hell.
@@DiamandaHagan can’t say I blame you
BBC is the IRL incarnation of the Cybermen. *Vera posts a new Doctor Who video with clips* “Delete! Delete! Delete!”
@AD-kv9kj I don't see anyone defending or praising the things they make for the reasons you mention. If we want big business to make more new stuff, we need to be willing to spend money on new stuff. Sequels seem to more reliably make more money.
I don't know what controversy in society you're referring to. If it's the kind that involves people whining about "wokeness", I'd love for corporations to keep doing what makes those people mad.
@user-bv5lc1nf5dno your thinking of the daleks
@user-bv5lc1nf5d That’s the Dalek’s catchphrase.
@@adamdavis1648 Not to mention phrases like “Shoehorn in characters” or “Ruining their legacy.” They seem to be making it sound as bad as possible, while purposely being vague. Not gonna act like the new season of Doctor Who is flawless or that BBC is an ethical company, which it clearly isn’t. But I too am on the fence with that person’s statement.
@user-bv5lc1nf5d Who said anything about pressganging? "Go woke, go broke" isn't a thing because several things whined about as "woke" made a big profit anyway (Captain Marvel, The Last Jedi, the Little Mermaid remake, the Mulan remake, the Barbie movie etc.). The Mario movie even did so well that the people who originally whined that it was "woke" suddenly did a complete 180 and suddenly started claiming it was anti-"woke."
The ironic tning is, DW could do with any PR it can get right now, especially positive feedback. Shooting themselves in the foot. Idiotict corporatism.
Yes wtf. Ther is good criticism enough and , whsat the hell bbc, why?
I honestly think the BBC owns everything but Doctor Who marketing team is probably not having the same ideals as the BBC does.
If it was actually about publicity then they wouldn't be shadow dropping the complaint.
Yeah, it's bizarre. Behaving this way only makes since if they're trying to drive Vera off from doing DW content, but she's more positive than most about DW, so they'd be driving viewers from Vera to (on average) more negative coverage. Even if they got it into the net it'd still be an own goal.
@@djmcbratney Not the only one who have been driven off YT by them. Half of the people I used to watch doing Who reviews have stopped doing them completely in the last 5 years. It's funny how bad management risks this specific series so many times over the decades - it's like they're trying to find a trifecta of cancellations or something
The annoying thing is this now sounds less like official corporate policy and more unofficial departmental policy.
That's a very hard thing to fight.
Perhaps a bunch of us need to craft FoI requests.
I honestly don't know why they're doing this. It makes no sense unless some lackey is doing this to justify their existence
This entire system is so broken that the VOD of my birthday marathon stream got blocked because I played a playlist of public domain cartoons (the Fleischer/Famous Superman shorts and some Warner Bros. shorts) while sleeping.
Thank you for the video, Vera!
Something to notice about these recent copyright claim problems: BBC is going after Vera's videos about Doctor Who doing relatively well in the TH-cam algorithm. Days after watching the video "Doctor Who's WORST EPISODE EVER came out in 2006...", suggestions for it still keep appearing for me even in videos not related to Doctor Who. You could interpret this situation in both ways. Good way: more people are watching Vera's videos. Bad way: the copyright claims are hindering the success of these same videos.
The people fund the BBC so WE have paid for ALL their content. If already released then we as the FUNDERS of their content should be granted the use of a wee clip.
The funding model is archaic. I resent paying it.
I don't fund it because I don't watch any TV.
Clips should fall under fair use regardless but tbf Vera is not British so she isn’t a funder so I’m not sure this is all that relevant aha
@@FrostekFerenczyIf you live in the UK you have to pay a TV license fee and taxes that fund the BBC 😕

I remember the 'kid' who designed the Absorbaloth getting interviewed on TV! In my head they'd still be a kid, but of COURSE they wouldn't be! That was, what 15 years ago? Unfortunately I was an adult back then as well, so my state hasn't changed in that time (apart from being greyer, creakier and flabbier)
its at least 18 years since the episode came out
honestly I was genuinely wondering what happened to that kid about.... six months ago? Came up in conversation randomly, so this is nuts
He's currently running Channel Pup, who has worked with the Council of Geeks sometimes
@carlosalmonacid8958 yes, that's.... that's the whole thrust of this talking point in this vid, since Vera literally names him and links there
There's an experiment opportunity here.
Like people with varying channel sizes and content can upload simple videos with an agreed upon ratio, length, and clips of doctor who content.
I'm 100% willing to do this.
Hagan is another creator who this happens to. She’s elsewhere in the comments talking about the hypocrisy of this.
@@lucyinchat wouldn't it be nice and just correct if we could just *know* what the rules are that we get punished for breaking
Can't you put a complaint into TH-cam or the BBC itself??
They can but the BBC will ignore it, at most sending a "we'll look into it" type response. YT doesn't care one bit, if they did they wouldn't allow the BBC and other companies to get away with it in the first place.
@@Elwaves2925 that's very true, it's a shame that this kind of thing happens tbh
TH-cam could get rid of the clames but can't stop then from just claiming it again. Mostly because they legally can't.
You expect the company that’s been turning a blind eye to AI company theft - something that’s against their policies but they hypocritically do the same, so they don’t want to draw attention to it can’t - to care about this? I wish, but alas…
Considering the negative press BBC can't control, they are going after those they can, in whatever way they could, without little to no repercussion.
(Sutekh was part of the use of AI in Disney+ Era Dr. Who, claiming that it's just supposed to be for advertising when they put out feelers about how people would think of Dr. Who using AI going forward and in receiving a negative response caused them to (publicly) dial it back.)
"But with a twist" ...there's always a twist at the end?
The BBC should really leave you alone. You are genuinely the reason I'm going to try watching Dr. Who. Your content is so amazing, and I'm so grateful for you
the shorts algorithm is completely f*cked.
They copyright every who channel. I saw a community post from a channel saying RTD asked them for a review and he was still copyright striken
Wasn't that Mr Tardis? He doesn't normally do reactions but answered the call from RTD to do one for the finale and then got a strike! 🤦♀
@@hotdog1214 probably 😂. I don't watch him often I saw it in the community posts and remembered it but didn't remember who
This is bunk. How the BBC is attacking you, not how you, Vera, are trying to deal with things or explain the situation to your audience. You are beautiful as always. Your videos make wonderful points. Best wishes.
Every time this happens i get frustrated and confused why they would do this since it’s another form of marketing for them so that more people watch the episodes of doctor who.
Literally
Hope you can ride out this storm. While i dont always agree with some of your takes i do enioy your channel and how clear and concise you are about your views and thoughts. Keep up the amazing work and i hope you have success in your battles against the stupidity of the BBC
There’s always a twist at the end after all!
If we watch the good version on patreon, do you still get the adsense revenue or are you just eating it?
Usually there's no point in reaching out to the company cuz they generally dont even know who you are and dont want to waste their time on you.
In this case, they have someone wasting their time on you, and just *maybe* the person doing it is tired of wasting their own time as well. Maybe in your next video, as you are telling the audience to go to patreon and why, speak directly to the person checking your videos, and ask them to get in touch so you can BOTH stop wasting time and money. Its a long shot, but maybe worth it.
Thank you for your videos, you've taught me to look at media differently, and I get a lot more out of stories because of you. Keep it up
I won’t get Adsense revenue on Patreon views, but I don’t expect it to be in such a high number that it would significantly hurt me here.
Could it be a person (persons, group) with a beef with you, alerting the BBC when you post something and they happen to notice?
Aww man, that sucks. I'm sorry that's been happening to you.
So sorry that you’re dealing with all of this 😭- it all sounds so frustrating!!! I’ll def be watching your preferred versions on Patreon as your new videos come out!!
As a petty work round - could do janky stick figure cut outs with silly voices?
I volunteer to do the stick figure animations
I can do the funny voices.
They’re getting creative now, they’re even doing twists xD Welcome to the new BBC series lmao
But seriously, I’m sorry that you’re going through this, and that they’re doing this to your channel, you don’t deserve it 😔❤️❤️❤️
Edit: I was wondering… We all know that the BBC news has problems with trans people, and while the team that manages the Doctor Who series is completely different, could it be that someone with similar views or that was transferred to deal with the copyright issues is purposely targeting you for being trans and supporting the LGBTQ+ community? It’s just a thought, and maybe it’s too far fetched, but It’s hard to explain why only your channel is being targeted and not anyone else’s
It's the same BBC team for all BBC related content on TH-cam. Vera showed the report which shows it's specifically the BBC.
@@nealjroberts4050Yeah, I mean the departments inside of the BBC. I imagine that they have different teams inside of the company, one that manages the news, one that manages the series, one that manages the youtube thing, etc etc
@@sinimeg
From what I recall someone who worked with them said, there's a central dept handling these but they liaise with whoever the production team report to
Ooof! Yeah 10 seconds was hard enough for clip length, at 5 seconds you may as well use a still instead sometimes! It sucks that I've been on TH-cam for 15 years and I'm still watching people struggle through the same old copyright BS.
I’m so sorry this is happening! I hope they leave you alone eventually.💙
Dumb question. Why do they leave you alone on Patreon? Why do they only file claims on TH-cam???
Don't give them any ideas.
Because TH-cam has tools set up to allow them to do it easily. Patreon doesn’t, so they’d probably have to legitimately sue me.
YT incentivizes false takedowns, which is why they are so common. I hope that EFF or some other advocate eventually takes it to court for the community.
@@CouncilofGeeks Got it. Thanks.
Anything that wastes your time, like having to edit twice, cuts into your earning ability. It's extremely frustrating, because anyone can see they don't have a legal leg to stand on.
Well done for being so level-headed about this, the BBCs behaviour is nonsensical. Please know that you and all your hard work is appreciated.
This is probably a weird video to put this but I just wanted to say that sometimes your sign off is the only thing that can make a bad day good and does help me feel, well... valid and loved

I wish you were independently wealthy and could just stick it to the bbc by keeping the clips and fighting every claim.

Bullshit like this from the BBC is one of the main reasons I refuse to pay for a TV licence
Well, I hope you're not being a hypocrite and watching live television broadcasts then. If you don't pay for it, go without, like I do.
Would love to see you and Mr Tadis debate 73 Yards!
They could just be generally trying to control the internet/social media presence of Doctor Who now that they're injecting into the market with the "official podcast" and revival of the aftershow being on their streaming service
The BBC is so strange when it comes to fair use, not even just with Doctor Who, but with everything. People could upload full episodes of The Young Ones with no problems, but the briefest moment of something that they may haven't even broadcast since like 1979 even with people talking over it and reviewing it will get claimed. Why?
Can I claim your necklace tho? I love it.
Lol that's all I could think too. I want one
Yeah, that's some bullshit. Sorry they're doing it.
And while it turned out to have been a mistake to presume the BBC was only targeting stuff related to the new season, that's also a very fair mistake to make. Ockham's Razor up against Correlation vs Causation.
Hi, I’ve been fan of Doctor Who since I was a kid back in 2005. I only stopped watching after Season 9 with Peter Capaldi because of the consistent 2 parter episodes, but I’m happy to keep updates through channels like yours! Keep em coming, Vera!
... so that review's borked bc the way the snippet of footage played was pivotal to the point, yikes.
And of course, now it's even more likely for someone to say "oh you're taking it out of context" and similar criticisms about stuff, including that review, because you *literally can't* show the context 💀
This is scary. I hope I never have to deal with this on my channel.
I don't mind being only stills.
I think it's unlikely to be the BBC doing this but an individual impersonating the copyright holder and acting out some sick parasocial vendetta against each video.
The copyright holder is registered through TH-cam’s system and would have to be falsely registering massive amounts of BBC content. That would have been caught by now.
I know this is going to sound like too much of a hassle but you should really consider asking a British friend to do this. Put in a FOIA request. I'm American but some basic googling shows you can put in a FOIA request with the BBC since they are publicly funded. I know a FOIA sounds like a hard legal thing to do but they are actually quite simple. I have no legal training and do not know any lawyers and I've successfully put in FOIA requests. They do not, at least in my local American context, need to be fancy. I'd suspect there are emails between BBC and TH-cam that either have your name or your videos' names in them. In an American context, emails are usually considered public records and are 100% obtainable. I see BBC even has a whole section on their website about FOIA requests. Maybe this is much more complicated than I'm making it seem but I think at the very least it would be interesting to confirm or deny any suspicions you have.
It would need to be a very specific request. As someone who's had to respond to them or part of them Legal are very clear you only give what they literally ask.
What I think is possible (as, admittedly, a complete layman - not a TH-cam creator at all), is that, while Disney themselves may not be behind the copyright strikes, it could be that someone at the BBC has heard about Disney's past history of challenging small businesses over copyright, and is therefore unilaterally deciding to be more harsh in copyright claiming on YT to "protect" the deal with the Evil Mouse Empire...
Commenting before viewing so that I don't forget my initial thought which is have you considered posting about it on Instagram and @-ing RTD and/or Georgia Tennant? I can imagine Georgia particularly having some strong feelings and mama bear instincts about your situation and access to people like RTD who would also be appalled by this.
Worth a try? Seriously worth a try to tell that wanker there to leave vera alone. Stop targeting decent reviewer who make people interested in watching you wanker.
Maybe it gets through and gets that wanker, to stop being a wanker.
After completing the video allow me to suggest that you let it be known that you are unsure if this is a Trans issue but due to your disclaimer, you are concerned that there might be something ill intentioned at play. Even if it is not related to your disclaimer or gender identity, it is still a valid issue regarding how fans are able to interact with the content that may be of interest to the show runner.
I'm frankly not comfortable tagging people who don't know me to step in on my behalf.
I can understand that feeling. But if you ever want people to do so on your behalf, know that many of your viewers (myself included) would take a swing for you.
@@lane6866me, too!
I am choosing to watch the inferior version of your videos on TH-cam rather than on patreon because as a TH-cam Premium subscriber, my views here directly put money in your pocket, while views on Patreon don't. Hopefully some day I will be able to support people like you and Nerdsync more directly on Patreon, but in the meantime this is the least I can do
TH-cam needs to get on top of their copyright system like so many people have wrongly used it as a weapon against creators you would think they would look at updating the system so its potential for being used as an unjust weapon is reduced.
Any chance there's a complaints space for the BBC that we, en masse, could go complain about this harrassment?
There's no such thing as bad publicity...
Sounds like the BBC needs to get a life 🙊
I think its most likely that the policies regarding the BBC's monitoring and policing of their IP has become more restrictive (on mass) due to how toxic fandom became during Chibs era. They are mitigating critical reviews that could impact the value of their IP. I very much doubt that they have different policies based on the age of the material being featured from Dr Who, or if it was generated, pre or post Disney deal. The BBC more than likely has written up their current policies to cover the entire IP (old & new) in a manner that serves both Disney and the BBC's continued investment. From their stand point, they don't need thousands of youtubers bashing Dr Who, when they can push forward a select few that are in their pocket.
The real Jims makes high quality videos about the simpsons and he only uses stills of the episode(s). So I think your videos will still be good with just stills.
Sorry you're having to deal with this BS Vera
Would you consider trying removing the announcement of the BBC stuff? Try it - remove it from a video or two and see if they get claimed. That would then answer the question of *why* it's happening - they're targetting you *because* of that announcement at the beginning of videos and using weasel words to get around it.
WB has always been a bag of dicks. After what they did to Quinn's Ideas channel for his videos on the Dune movies that opinion was cemented for me. I don't understand why companies get mad when people talk about their media. There's no such thing as bad press.
Fyi DW s1-10 are on prime in Canada. if that information is helpful for which countries/streaming services are abusing the claim system.
Wow sorry you have to deal with all this trouble. Very ridiculous this is.
I love your reviews, and I'm so sorry you keep getting hassled by the BBC. What you've described (and what I've seen happen on other channels that review things like Anime) is the reason why I repeatedly talk myself out of doing media-review content, even though I think it would be a blast to do 🤦🏻
I am so sorry this happening to you. If they did not want people to criticise or be aware of their transphobia, they should change up their act.
I'll still be watching your videos on TH-cam as you deserve the ad revenue
Good grief, sorry to hear this keeps happening, certainly seems to be beyond accidental at this point.

There's a TH-camr called MrTardis who did a reaction video at RTD's request only to get it copyright struck by the BBC.
It's probably not personal, the BBC is going after everyone. It's likely to get worse, as the number of people refusing to pay the license fee has finally gone over 1 in 10. They're getting a bit panicky.
mrtardis is mentioned in this video
Is there anything we can do to help? Besides the standard engagement i mean. I just hate this for you, Vera. It's unfair.
Oh, no... This sounds bad. Leave Vera alone, BBC!

Im only a small channel of 2000 subscribers and in my experiemce ive never neen able to gey away with any amount of footage from the show. My clips are never over 10 seconds, under five second clips get flagged. Youre not alone
Hey Beautiful, Valid, Beloved Vera! A bit of context to de-creepify this comment: I'm doing a rewatch of B5 with a good friend on Tuesdays, and I was telling her about your channel and Jumpgate podcast yesterday. Then you popped up in my dream! You were sitting at my kitchen table and we were talking about Venn diagrams of geekery, and how some are basically circles. So if you're ever in the West of Ireland and want to come chill and chat in my kitchen, it would be one of the most feasible dreams-come-true in history! xox
Your epistemic rigor is a joy for this former professor to witness
Twist ending: In three years time Vera comes clean and reveals that the whole thing was orchestrated with a friend at the BBC: a long con designed to drive more viewers over to her Patreon
(Just kidding, obviously. Love you Vera. Hope this bs comes to an end as soon as possible)
Your eloquent commentary is far and away the best of your videos. The BBC can’t begin to touch that.
You are beautiful! Keep fighting the good fight.
If it wouldn't be even more work on your plate I'd almost suggest going the whole 're-enact with papercutouts/dolls' route I've seen people take with e.g. pokemon reviews.
Re enact the scenes with finger puppets, against a hastily drawn crayon background.
I wonder if whoever is employed at the BBC has to meet a quota or some data point to justify keeping their job (because their management/leadership doesn't fully understand it and just wants "numbers to go up"). Maybe you're a reliable/easy source for that, as opposed to this person actually digging for copyright infringements.
Sorry they're messing with you, Vera :(
Is it possible that a bad actor is reporting your videos to BBC, thereby creating the undo attention? Not that I seek to exonerate the BBC as much as implicate the toxic side of the fandom, which almost seems intent on tearing anything Dr. Who down.
Possible? Yes. But that's completely unprovable, just like the possibility that I'm being targeted for my disclaimer at the front of these videos.

Disney can't claim for Doctor Who, they don't own it. It's also odd that they'd target you, a relatively small TH-camr who has a very little reach compared to bigger pop culture channels.
Check if other youtubers are being pinged for this
The DMCA and its consequences have been a disaster for humanity. The discussions about it as it was being passed were overwhelmingly negative. It gives large corporations _way_ too much power over small creators since you have to actually go to court for them to face any repercussions for abusing takedown notices (and their legal team is gonna be bigger than yours).

The company that makes these "FALSE" claims should be held liable for ALL money lost with interest.
It would be amazing how fast that crap stopped the second that falsely claiming crap cost them money.
I hate to even slightly lean into conspiracy theory but these are my thoughts. With the false/accidental claims from the specials and then issues with the new season etc, i think you have grabbed a person's attention and they are being over eager with claiming. Ive seen a few similar comments but as ive no idea how the system works beyond what you say in videos, im not sure if we are reaching with these theories.
