@@willisgemutlich2608 The Freedive Shop in Sacramento can help with wetsuits in CA. I can ask them if they have recommendations for shops down south. I am not sure of anyone doing custom in CA, just elios sub USA (which I wear) that does custom suits in the USA.
I just wanted to say thank you very much for being ethical and humanly dispatching your catch! This is a rare trait in people today and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that you care!
Lol there are a lot of misconceptions rolling around about CA these days. Haters have got to hate, but it's fine by me if they keep their storm clouds away from the golden state! Happy undersea hunting!

Awesome and very informative video. Thank you for putting this together. Born and raised in Southern California and now I want to start getting into spear fishing.
Thank you!! Been slowly inching my way to these activities. So glad I came across your channel. I'm also in California! Might take up your offer and hit you up.
Jose, Right on! Undersea hunting changes your entire perspective on the ocean and will absolutely influence the way that you fish from shore as well. There is something very special and informative about seeing the undersea environment as an active participant in that food chain and ecosystem. If you do decide to learn to spearfish, just let me know and I would be more than happy to show you the ropes!
Yes! thank you so much for the series, can't wait for more vids. I go to my uncles vacation house in Mexico and try to shore spear dive. I've purchased some basic gear. It's scary going down there alone with zero knowledge (my uncle is up in a kayak watching), but it's still very scary with low vis and little to no knowledge of what I'm doing. I brought my gear back to Southern California hoping I could use it more often, but the opposite has happened since then and I go much less since I not only have to worry about the ocean, but all the different US/CA regulations (Mexico is pretty much fair game with the exception of you'll piss off the locals if they see you pulling up lobsters).
Right on! I will be guiding in So Cal soon as well if you are interested. Yeah, to my understanding only Mexican citizens can take any aquatic invertebrates in Mexico and US citizens can only take finfish down there. At least the last time I spearfished south of the boarder some 10 years ago SCUBA spearfishing was illegal and spearos could only freedive. I thought that was an interesting regulation (which of course did not affect me as a freediver). Thanks for watching!

This is an amazing video! Thank you so much. What other considerations are there for ensuring diving on a clearer day. I dive in socal and I'm constantly diving in muddy murky water even when I check the surf forecast.
Try to dive near the high tide as it brings in new clean water and try to chose days with low wind and low swell. Days where it has been low swell for multiple days in a row will also help to settle out the water and improve visibility.

What is the reason behind drying the sea weed? All that sea food looks delicious. I’ve been binge watching your videos. I found you channel by watching Taku and a video he collaborated with you on.
Honestly, I am not sure if it changes the texture (might have to do a video in that) but it seems that all commercially harvested seaweeds are dried and later rehydrated for use so that is what I have always done. Glad you found my channel!
I am not sure where I got the one I was using in this video. I recommend starting with a simple fiberglass three prong like the SCUBA Choice 3 prong 5' on Amazon, but modify the grip as I showed in one of my more recent Intro to Spearfishing videos. If you already have experience and are looking to get a more advanced and higher quality pole spear, Evolve, Crist and Gatku make good pole spears.
Do you know what camo colour and model of elios sub suit you got? Does the custom suit fit true to size, did have to add length on the next suit you bought? Any extras you add on the suit when ordering? Thanks
Sorry for the delayed reply! Hydrorepellent green camo outer, open cell inner 7mm thick with high waste. It is custom so it required no modifications at all! You can also look up elios USA, the website has an option for the "Nam Liong Green" which looks like my suit. All of their wetsuits are incredible though! I have nothing but good things to say about them!
I swear i was just starting to research spearfishing a day or two ago and i saw you posted this video. i also live in California so this is perfect! Do you use any weights when diving, and how do you keep your boogieboard from floating away? Thanks.
Right on! Yes, the weight belt balances the buoyancy of the wetsuit to bring the diver back to neutral (which then feels like not wearing a suit at all and allows for a diver to actually dive down rather than float like a cork). The amount of weight depends on thickness of suit and body weight. Thanks for the reminder! I will cover this subject as part of the next video. Making the dive board will also be covered in the next video. In short, I clip the board to kelp when kelp is around but if there is no kelp, I clip one end of my float line to my speargun or a weight I drop to the bottom and the other end to the leash on the bodyboard.
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 Thanks! and if you could cover like what size of spear if that matters, and maybe link one if you have any suggestions for a 3 prong
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the Intro to Spearfishing CA series. It has been quite fun to film and I will continue filming it when dive conditions improve in the Spring.
you need to set your channel apart from the hundreds of other fish & cook channels. You should tell people where exactly you go. Fisherman's life earlier videos are like this. That's how he got ahead of everyone else
It seems as though nearly all (or possibly all are edible) but a few deaths have been attributed to a few species. These deaths may be related to cyanobacteria contaminants rather than the seaweeds themselves though. Gracilaria, Acanthophora, and Caulerpa are questionable according to some. But I do not know of any poisonous seaweeds in Western North America. Some freshwater algae however can straight up kill you!
