    You guys are genuine and humble. I appreciate so much the time you invest in making these videos. It's encouraging and gives me hope to get back in the water asap. I bought some of my gear (fins, snorkel, mask and bag at lost wind dive shop in Dana Point) minus the suit as I was saving up and then was in a traumatic car accident that left me temporarily paralyzed. That was 4 months ago. I am on my way to recovering and I am able to walk again. 🙏 Thank God! Watching your videos have given me hope and keeping the stoke alive during this pivotal time in my life. I just wanted to share that sometimes you don't realize how much of an impact you have. Thank you. Keep up the great work.

      I am so sorry to hear that! Just take it slow and steady and keep your eye on that goal of freediving when you fully recover! I shattered my kneecap into 5 pieces years back and while stuck on the couch recovering I started watching TH-cam catch and cook videos for the first time. That was when I decided to start a TH-cam channel of my own when I recovered. One day at a time and you will be in the water soon!

    Good info on the wetsuits. For years every dive ended because I got too cold. I'm *only* 6-4, and didn't have a budget for a custom suit but finally found a Cressi suit that fit well and keeps me warm. What a game changer!
    I too started with a pole spear just to see if I would enjoy it. Now it's one of my favorite things! It's not often I find clarity like this, those days are special!

It's an experience that can't be explained 🥰 My husband wore vented earplugs so he could clear. He had a bad eardrum. I really recommend renting gear from a local dive shop for the first dive. This will let you really get a feel for it while saving a lot of money. It is essential that you go with someone with a good amount of diving experience too as there are so many hazards out there that can quickly put divers in harms way and an experienced dive partner will help you avoid them. Local dive shops or dive clubs may be good resources for you or you can join one of my entry-level guided freedive-spearfishing outings at catchncookcalifornia.com

    Some literature that I read about Blue Rockfish stated that they rarely move more than 300m away from where they were hatched. That's one of the reasons that fishing out an entire school in an area decimates that local population. Either that one you saw was the "odd one out" or the rest of the school was fairly close by.

    Love this video, how long do you have to hold your breath for?

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks! If you can hold your breath for 30 seconds you can get a fish but I recommend practicing on the couch (not while operating a motor vehicle or heavy machinery) until you can get your breath hold up to at least a minute and a half. Then, when you are in the water swimming and hunting with all of your gear that will translate to about 45 seconds which is plenty. You will be surprised how much you improve through practice though. I remember hitting one minute for the first time... fast forward a decade or more and I hit 6 minutes (after a long dive season with a lot of practice).

    Thanks for creating this 101 Spearfishing CA, this experience that you're sharing is awesome! It's something that I looked for quite some time, as I probably will be moving to the Bay Area. I wonder what length of the pole spear would you recommend being optimum for this close to shore hunting? And have by any chance used sling with trigger?

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Andrei, Thanks for watching! I recommend the 5ft pole spear but 7ft gives you more range. Most species that you might take with a three prong are close enough that 5ft is totally fine and the longer the pole spear the harder it is to maneuver in and around tight caves where grass rockfish and black-and-yellows like to live. I have never used a sling with a trigger. I plan to do a vid at some point in the series with true Hawaiian slings, but since that is "free shafting" and central and NorCal vis is not exceptional I think having a shooting line attached to the projectile is a better system for these waters. I would recommend a pole spear to start with and a 70cm speargun after that.

    Any tips on taking breaths and increasing bottom time? How to properly weight yourself? Thanks!

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just saw this comment, sorry! Yes I will dedicate segments in upcoming videos to these topics. There is a formula for proper weight that at least gets you in the ballpark. The formula takes into account your body weight and suit thickness. A 3mm suit is far less buoyant than a 5mm suit which is still less than a 7mm suit so the amount of lead required will increase as suit thickness increases. The general formula for a 7mm suit is 10% of your body weight + 3-5 lbs. So a 210lbs person with a 7mm thick suit would wear 21lbs+3-5 lbs or somewhere between 24lbs and 26lbs. The variation comes from whether your weight is mostly from dense muscle or buoyant fat reserves, but this formula at least gets you in the ballpark! Then it is about fine tuning in the water but it will be discussed in this weeks vid. More on breath hold later!

  • @iangarnerlerose

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It will be fine to give it a try though you will get cold after a while. If that is the suit that you have you can totally use it to start but I would eventually recommend a 5mm or 7mm open cell freedive suit. I recommend Elios Sub.

  • @rkaz

    Great video! I just wish I lived on the coast. One thing about sling spears, waaaay back when I actually did some diving and spearfishing with a sling spear, I had a spear with a spring steel paralyzer head that was indestructible, even if I hit a rock accidentally the tines would not bend. I had others that would get bent if you looked at them wrong. How are those inexpensive ones in that regard?

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  ปีที่แล้ว

      My spear tip was just fine. The point on one tine was very slightly bent after hitting a rock but nothing a file or some pliers couldn't fix in a minute or two. I didn't bother fixing it though and have landed several fish with it since filming that. So, yes, it seems pretty bomb-proof. Thanks for watching!

    Random question, I want to start learning how to freedive and spearfish/use hand spear, but my friend told me I might run into a problem with holding my breath due to me smoking marijuana, is it impossible to get good time on the bottom while being a smoker or will it just take more time and effort learning how to hold my breath for longer?

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nera, smoking anything is obviously not good for your lungs. That being said, there is no reason that you cannot be an exceptional freediver and a marijuana smoker. However, I strongly discourage you from diving while under the influence! Many mind-altering substances may make the mind feel relaxed but simultaneously increase ones heart rate. As a result, diving under the influence may cause a diver to think they have plenty of air left on a breath hold due to their relaxed state of mind even though their rapid heart rate is burning their oxygen quickly. This can lead to shallow water blackout (the number 1 cause of freediver death). Thanks for watching and good question!

    Quick question: I live in socal, looking to get a 3 prong, what is an ideal size? is 8ft too big? I'm also looking at evolve pole spear since I can break it down to smaller sizes.

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  ปีที่แล้ว

      I will be testing evolve pole spears soon. I use a 5ft pole spear. I think 8 would be a bit on the long size. For me 7 would be the max length. The shorter pole spears do better with hole hunting in caves in the reef though a longer spear will let you shoot fish a bit further away. I am very happy with my 5 ft spears though as they are short enough for hole hunting but long enough for most reef shots.

    Is there a certain you can harvest sea urchin like muscles?

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  ปีที่แล้ว

      A certain? Area or season? Yes, all areas outside the boundaries of Marine Protected Areas (MPA's) and State Marine Conservation Areas (SMCA's) that prohibit the take of them should be fine to my knowledge. Though, mussels are only safe to consume in the colder months. Even in colder months they can also remain toxic to humans. As of Nov 2022 mussels are still unsafe to harvest and eat in San Mateo County and portions of the North Coast. Call the Biotoxin Info Hotline for a pre-recorded message with more information on where and when mussels are safe to harvest and eat. 800 553 4133

    Glad to see you making these videos. I've spearfished in the past but haven't done it for close to 10 years now. I moved to the Bay Area a few years ago and have been interested in taking it up again but had no clue where to start since I never needed a wetsuit before just a rash guard.
