I absolutely loved this moment! This is the moment where everyone knew Elena clearly and positively chose Damon over Stefan. Don’t get me wrong, I loved S/E together. They were beautiful and sweet, and a bit pure. It was nice seeing that first love kinda thing. But there’s a difference between a first love and a last love. Stefan came into Elena’s life at a time she really needed someone to help her ease through her grieving process. And, Stefan was perfect for it. He helped her open her eyes again and see that a love life was possible. He helped put her on the path to who she was before her parents died. But having said that, that’s all Stefan was able to do for her. Damon on the other hand, lead Elena through that path and helped her come out on the other side. He challenged her, and made her question everything about herself and who she thought she was. He accepted her in ALL forms of herself, especially the darkest parts of herself. And not only did he accept the darkest parts of herself, he made her see that it was okay for her to love and accept the darkest parts of herself too. He made her see it’s okay to act on both, how to control it and how to accept things. Damon represents the wild and untamed, and the unknown, but he also represents control when needed and stability in his own way. And that’s what Elena was all about (before her parents died), that’s what she really wanted in her life. Like Damon said, she wanted a “love that consumed” her and “a life with passion, adventure, and even a little danger”. Damon is the one who made Elena truly live and made her accept all parts of herself, even the bad ones. It’s like how Damon has always been in better control of his blood drinking than Stefan. While Stefan tries to always hide who and what he is, and tries to do the whole all or nothing with drinking blood, he can’t control himself and he either slips WAY off the wagon, or he goes completely cold turkey. He never wants to just accept the darkest parts of himself. And because he could never accept the darkest parts of himself, he couldn’t do that with Elena either. Hence him not really accepting Elena as a vampire and hated the way it changed her. He couldn’t deal with the fact that she turned into a vamp and it made her feel like crap. And she wouldn’t accept herself fully and it made her unhappy. She couldn’t be herself completely. But with Damon she could be. He accepted her either way. He accepted and love the human side of her and still loved her vampire self with all the darkest parts of her. With Damon she could just be. Being with Damon brought out the best parts of Elena and made her whole. And that’s why Damon will always be better for Elena than Stefan. Because no matter what, and no matter who she was, Damon always saw through her and always loved her for exactly who she was. What Stefan and Elena had was pure and beautiful and cute, but what Damon and Elena had was exactly what he said she wanted: a consuming love that was full of passion, adventure and even danger. She was alive with Damon, whereas with Stefan, he just gave her the chance to be prepared to be ready for that kind of love. People can say what Damon and Elena had was toxic. But so was what Stefan and Elena had at times too. People act like Damon was the only one who hurt Elena and made terrible choices in regards to Elena. Stefan did too. Even with his humanity, Stefan did some of the exact same things Damon did to Elena. They both made mistakes when it came down to it. Stefan was good for Elena, but Damon was always the better match. Stefan was Elena’s first love, Damon will always be her last and final love.
OMG, the expression on Damon's face when Elena says she's in love with him... he so clearly was expecting her to say she was going back to Stefan. I already shipped Delena, so I would have loved this scene regardless, but thinking of everything he's done for her, believing the whole time that she'd go back to Stefan in the end, just makes this scene about 100 times better!

Right up there with their kiss on Elena's front porch in S3, Damon professing his love for her, both when near death and before compelling her in S2, their first time, Elena regaining her memory with Damon, and their scenes & last dance from the two part wedding episode. Those scenes combined are probably my top favorites. And of course their miss mystic falls dance is iconic. No she didn’t. Yes Nina and Ian were together in real life for almost 3 years, that’s no a lie. But they were apparently friends before they were a couple and still are, Nina said that after they broke up. I personally, from what I can see is a lot of it came down to the fact that he was ready to settle down, get married and have kids and she wasn’t and I think that’s part of the reason why they broke up. I still get butterflies when elena says that she loves him. I personally, from what I can see is a lot of it came down to the fact that he was ready to settle down, get married and have kids and she wasn’t and I think that’s part of the reason why they broke up. I still get butterflies when elena says that she loves him. Delena was endgame because Damon respected her wishes and sometimes agreed with them; whereas in the stelena relationship, i just felt a bit odd when i saw elena and stefan together, for me it didn't feel right. I'm not saying that i hate their relationship, there were good bits, but delena was more real and didnt feel fake, probably because they were dating irl. When they had their 'we're toxic' fight and broke up, they werent toxic, it was their friends saying it wasn't real, especially Caroline being a royal bitch when she had (i think) cheated on tyler with klaus.

I always saw Stefan as Elena's vampire boyfriend with training wheels. When she was ready for the grown up version, she moved on to Damon, her one true love. :D

Damon is actually good for Elena in so many ways. I knew she'd choose him because I watched S3 and I understood the sire bond very well. Elena isn't the blind one. Stefan is. He doesn't know Damon half as well as he thinks he does. In fact, when it comes to Damon, Stefan is most often wrong. I liked "bad" Damon in the first season, but as soon as he hit Jenna's house for the barbecue in S2... I was all for the character journey that I knew was coming.
