It's pretty handy that they have mosaics on the tiled walls of stations to indicate which station you are at too. If you didn't hear the automatic voice announcing the station or the operator announcing the station, just look out the window and see what station you are at on the wall.
I can never hear the announcements because of bad speakers and/or loud conversations. Some trains have LED readouts of the stops, some have a small map with the destination lit up and some have nothing at all.
8:33 take that suggestion with a grain of salt: Conductors are usually (as expected) poking their heads out to make sure everybody is standing clear of the doors and able to move along aka no time for small talk. If you do ask, ask straight forward or get to the point and you'll probably get the answer you need. They're no experts, I've gotten "not sure" or "I don't know" or "ask the booth" plenty of times. as a Queens kid born n raised, this was my only "yeah but" point i had to call out. Rest of the video and Katherine are great tho! 👍
@@FreeToursbyFootNewYorkWalks no, of course I know you guys weren’t recommending small talk at all lol I was just saying that for the viewers as a tip b/c there are the ones that’ll ask everything but “which way” and such 👍🏻
This subway is so fraking complex (moreso that the subway system here in Toronto) that I'd need a GPS device to find my way (in fact, that's what I think that I'll do *_if_* I ever visit New York on my own.)
Bonjour Katherine, vos explications claires, complètes et surtout données avec générosité m'ont tellement aidée. J'en avais regardé d'autres mais aucun ne m'éclaircissait tout ce que, oui, il faut savoir au sujet du métro de New York. MERCI MERCI.
Is it correct that subway trains follow the direction of traffic flow? So if you want to head downtown enter the subway on the side of the road (if two way) where the traffic is heading downtown and vice versa.

To be fair, we aren't recommending small talk. We mention this as a way to know for sure which direction the train is going.

Great video. I'm headed to NYC with my son and it's been 15 years since I've been there so I needed a refresher.
I'm from a very small Midwest city, and NYC is very intimidating.
Dubuque isn’t a city
Jk
