Hey guys - I just recently launched my Insiders Newsletter where once a week I send out an important aviation lesson I've learned and how it can help you, links to my latest content, and behind the scenes info. It's totally free and you can sign up at airplaneacademy.com/insiders

I live very close to the famous Kenmore Air near Seattle. I was already eyeing their float ASEL rating and this vid pushed me over the edge. It's a shame that the only way to solo is to own, but that's just another worthy goal to aim for.
    Excellent vid!

I got my seaplane rating 6 years ago. And it was without a doubt the most fun I've ever had in an airplane, even more than flying an extra 300. But there is a big catch people should be aware of. Unless you own a seaplane or know someone who does it is almost impossible to get your hands on one solo. No where I have ever seen will let you rent one alone, some will let you go with an instructor but that is not as much fun and rules out long trips.

i found two places. One of em is in western France, a place called Biscarrosse and the other is in Italy, Lake Como. The name for that one is Aero Club Como.
You have to do a conversation and redo the EASA Seaplane rating but that's the best one I've found.

I'm still a student, never had considered getting a seaplane rating. I just recently found out my late grandfather flew seaplanes, and with this video I'm seriously considering it. Thanks for sharing!

DON'T LISTEN TO THIS! THIS IS A TERRIBLE MISTAKE!! You will never want to do any other flying and you will get sad looking at any body of water. (I got my seaplane and I am infatuated with it but it is nearly impossible to build seaplane time.)

That's great, now are you going to put floats on your 182?

  • @ddthompson42

Funny he talked about the 185 being unapproachable. I've been eying my local school's amphib 185 and keep thinking "that thing is a BESAST!" lol. Will get my complex, high performance, and seaplane ratings/endorsements in that plane one day, but a amphib Cub seems like a lot more fun for someone of my skill and hours at the moment.

The thing about a float plane is that no-one will rent one out to you. So unless you want to buy an amphib to park in front of your lake mansion - you can do it for the experience, but not sure where you take it from there.

I have to agree!! Getting my Commercial Seaplane rating WAS THE BEST and MOST FUN rating I have ever done. Never got above 500ft AGL. Did it in a 172 on floats in Florida at Jones Brother’s . When I came back home to the high desert of NM, I found that flying a 172 here was just that much more dialed in. GO GET YOUR Seaplane rating. I’m going to get my Multi-Seaplane in 2025
