    Having Known Pedro and worked at his last Airline with him I can attest to his demeanor and professionalism. He was always one of the favorites. He was also a senior training captain with a lot of experience. Unfortunately our contracts all ended and expat pilots were no longer required at that airline. Pedro ended up in my hometown of Vancouver and is excelling in his new job from what I see.

      Spinning a first time student like that, if it was not discussed beforehand (and it doesn't look like it was), is a terrible idea. It's not going to impress anyone, and is likely to intimidate and scare the student. If that's what happened, it was all to indulge the CFI.

      Yeah Pedro seems legit. Generally it would be considered a bit unfair/unreasonable to expect your average flight instructor himself to have to speak to reviews of the business, especially if they’re really old when he didn’t work there (only been there 2 years) unless Pedro himself runs the entire flight school.. the reviews are going to be from people that paid for an entire package of flight training (weeks/months), including a lot of flight time/ground training, and again it was likely prior ownership/leadership/instructors/employees that contributed to that, none tied directly to Pedro, he seems like a friggin saint.
      These flight schools churn through flight instructors, owners, ground school trainers pretty regularly, just the nature of the small/local flight school “industry”, these folks tend to move on to bigger companies, bigger/more complex planes, earning them more certifications, qualifying them to fly/train people on planes that Pedro’s school may not even have available in their hangar.
      It’s also common for everyday folks to be shocked by the apparent old age of the planes, often from the 70’s/80’s (at best) but again this is common industry-wide. The important bits on a plain are federally mandated to be operating in top condition, a costly annual event, on top of all the other regular maintenance items required. It’s unlikely you’ll find any flight school with the money to buy new planes, nor those made in the last 20-30 years, as it makes zero financial sense when a 30 year old plane is still $60k or whatever, and will require the exact same level of annual inspection cost, exact same cost to store the plane, to operate it daily in terms of fuel (okay a newer one will be a little more fuel efficient but that’s negligible if you have to spend $150k to get it), and fundamentally,’the planes will “fly/operate” very similarly, despite the 30-40 year age difference.
      Just comes down to physics/fundamental laws of nature as it relates to an aircraft in the air. Again sure a $200k new plane will be a little smoother, brake better, have all digital dash etc... but that’s a not realistic experience, any actual pilot will not start out in a $200k new Cessna. It’s gunna be a 1972, just like the one they trained on, cause that’s what makes financial sense in both cases. Almost end rant. I will say that it seems a little strange that Pedro went from being a commercial pilot (NO easy feat, costly to obtain sufficient training, pays well) to a small/local flight instructor working with beginners. But, maybe he prefers that. His personality certainly seems well-fit for working with beginners, and he’s likely certified to train more experienced pilots on other aircraft they may not happen to have in their own personal hanger (e.g. multi-engine etc.).
      In summary, I’d trust Pedro with my life, especially considering he’s a former commercial pilot, it takes a LOT to get to that level, even if he had to step down from it for one reason or another.
      Edit to add formatting and this context: I’ve taken a few ‘discovery flights’ with more than one local flight school, coincidentally I also happened to fly with an operator in Vancouver, though that was a heli...

    As a pilot, I thought I would add my two cents,
    -Flight center is at a towered airport, generally speaking, this is a good sign because it gives students good experience talking to ATC
    -The airport itself seems to have a bit of a maintenance program, grass not being trimmed, scrap metal left loose.
    -The flight school itself seems pretty good. In Canada, the maintenance standards for flight school aircraft are very high. Some planes are old and some people equate this to mean bad, but I've flown some aircraft that still had cigarette lighters that flew fine. Old doesn't mean terrible.
    -Having an instructor with airline experience is a real treat, especially if you intend on going commercial. Pedro must be a real popular instructor with all his experience.
    -Wish we got to see more of the intro flight but it seems like pretty standard stuff. Although some instructors avoid doing spins on an intro flight just because you never know how some people's stomachs will react
    Haven't seen enough to make a complete judgment, but based of this video I would spend some money there.

    • @designedbybold
      @designedbybold 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed with everything you say. One of the flight schools I instruct for have 172s that still have ash trays. I’m 22 years old and rarely do I ever instruct in a plane younger than I am. It’s normal territory. If you don’t want to pay an extra $50-$100 a flight go fly older aircraft. They get beat up every day anyways with smash and goes so why would a school buy brand new 172s? My main school just got a brand new $600k 172 gifted from Cessna since we won some video contest, but that’s the newest plane by at least 15 years.

    As someone who is a certified flight instructor as a living, this school seems great from the video. Plane is old but so are like 90% of all flight school planes. The maintenance is what matters. Pedro seems like a great CFI, but I personally would never take a first time student up to do spins on the first lesson. I rarely ever take primary students to do full spins at all. That being said who knows how they got to that point.

    • @GTReplayMaster
      @GTReplayMaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Agree, spins are a bit much for an intro flight or first lesson and there really isn't much to gain from seeing them at that stage. I'm wondering if that's normal for the flight school or if he was asked to do the craziest manuever just to make the video exciting.

    Pedro seems competent, did everything expected of him. It's interesting how he demonstrated a full-spin so early on, but I assume that was specifically requested. That being said, The Cessna 152 Aerobat, as he notes at 8:37 is a very well equipped and quite rare airplane to find. If they put some budget into hiring more people like Pedro, taking the wreckage out of the apron, renovating the lounge and getting rid of the spooky trailer, I think the school could prove itself to be competitive on the national scale. One interesting thing was that the W&B Envelope was quite heavily loaded, especially for prolonged spins, but I assume the aerobat is only ever loadable in the utility category considering its applications.

    I’m a flight instructor, and the dramatic camerawork in the beginning zooming on the coroner van and “decommissioned” forgotten aircraft had me dying of laughter 😂😂
    I’ve only been instructing for a little over a year. Pedro seems like a great instructor, you can tell by his demeanor. I However, I would never take a first time flyer up and dump him into a spin. Most would puke from stalls alone. The vice guy was tough. LOL. I was also questioning the weather- their cloud clearances for VFR are questionable but they could’ve gotten special VFR.
    Learning to fly isn’t easy, and it’s not for everyone. Many people who start don’t finish, unfortunately. The reviews are most likely from people who didn’t finish training or are frustrated with their lack of progress despite spending so much money. That’s what I’ve experienced looking at reviews for other flight schools.
    Anyway- really enjoyed the video through the eyes of a first time flyer! Taji looks like he’d be a great student😁

      @TopDollar38 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I doubt any competent instructor would do stalls and spins on a discovery flight unless asked to. Although I did do steep turns during mine. My guess is they asked if they could do something exciting to add drama to the video. Wouldn't be surprised if all the negative reviews were either from a previous issue the school had in the past with a particular instructor or a disgruntled student overreacting.
