I remember helping a gamestop employee help a nice old lady find a game to play with her grandson. It was a Nintendo game and she gave details involving cute characters in a little town... yeah that narrows it down. As she spoke I started to get what she was saying and asked if she could fish and collect bugs. Her eyes lit up and she was like "YES! Yes and there was a little yellow dog in it."
Animal Crossing... She wanted that one. She left very happy, and I thought it was cool that she was playing with her grandson, since she was barely younger than my grandmother.

When I worked at EB Games (This was back in 2004 or so), I used to get parents that weren't even all that old coming in and saying "My son wants the Mario game for Playstation." I would kindly explain that there are no Mario games for Playstation. These soccer moms would always be in such a rush during the holidays they would act like they didn't have time for dealing with me. "Ugh, my son played it at his friend's house, I know it exists." Their tone always seemed to suggest they think I'm just lying to them for some reason. So then I would say, well maybe his friend has a Gamecube. That has Mario on it. To which she would reply "I don't know what that is, but we have a Playstation, so I need the game for that."

Of course, if you did what I would think to do in that situation, explain to them that different consoles have different games that are exclusive, how those games would only be available for that particular console, they would still fail to get it. Even if you showed them detailed explainers about how exclusives used to make or break a console, that consoles depend on exclusives to attract buyers, they would still look at you like you were saying one plus one is eleven.
Sometimes I wish stores would put up signage aggressively telling the ignoramuses things like "You can only get Mario games on Nintendo consoles, and you are an idiot if you think otherwise".

The worst old people are the ones that ask you a question and when you answer the question they get mad because it's not what they wanted to hear. Like "do coupons work on clearance items?" "No" "what do you mean I'm on a fixed income and can't afford this price." "There's nothing I can do for you mam." "I want to talk to a manager." Then the manager comes up tells them the same thing they argue for 30 minutes until the customer either gets it any way or just leave

Well, it's understandable that the elderly want to be independent. If you start to lose your ability to be independent, you'll start to try to hold on tightly to what independent you have left. I know it looks depressing, but when you remember the things you used to be able to do, and then one day, you can't do it anymore, yeah, you'll want to cling to what you have left.

Sometimes its not so much about independance. Sometimes its that they dont want to constantly bother people. Because they dont want to annoy or burden you with anything or they think you see them as a nuscance.
In my grandmothers case she's constantly apologizing to me or my family if she asks for something like money or living arangements even if you tell them its ok.

EoR 2B4GOT10 He’s probably born from a time where backstock lingered and computers didn’t give businesses the economies of scale that the post-1990’s produced.
After the Internet era, stuff moves, and it gets moved to regions that know they’ll sell product.
Hopefully they didn’t leave a bad survey. Also avoid building up false hope about “probably” that’s what really upsets people.

I worked at a state local brand of grocery store called cub foods for about 3 years. funny how you and Eric have so many stories to share but i can hardly remember many memorable moments of that entire three years of working lmao. granted, i was the "cart guy" for the most part and my job was very straightforward and i didn't interact with my co-workers too often.
I think the biggest issue I ever had with the elderly is when I'm training around 30 or 40 carts across the parking lot back into the store, they being old walk EXTREMELY slow. and much like douches who dont feel like they have to look out for the cart dude and almost hit me with their car, they are more or less oblivious to my existence until im 5 inches away from them. now, if I see an older person walking across the lot to go inside ill stop and let them go through of course, it's when they full on see me going past them and still decide to start walking across the lane. you really cant blame them like you said, but still... made my 17 year old hair just that much grayer sometimes lmao.

Then they start talking about Gears of War and how they play the game with their grandkids. I had to get my friend's attention and told him to just listen to the them talk. So we just listened for a little bit and one of the women started talking about how she liked the chainsaw gun and cutting people in half. Both my friend and my jaws hit the floor. People should not be this ignorant. They should know there is a difference. Video games are not new at this point. Home video games have been around since the late 70s-early 80s. I am 52, my generation grew up back in the early 80s. We had 3 main systems back then. Atari, Intellivision and Colecovision. Just as today you have three main systems-PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox. What I am getting at is that people my age certainly should know that there are multiple systems that only play designated games because we were playing video games back when we were teenagers and people of my parents age (70-80) should know this as well because they were buying video games for their kids back in the 1980s. I dont know if what I am trying to explain makes sense but one last thing. You suggested having them take a picture of what they are wanting. Now you just sent a bunch of senior citizens into Walmart to hassle them for some polaroid film for a outdated camera that no longer exists!

At least she had a console from the right company for a mario game but didn't understand upgraded hardware needed for newer gen games.

I've seen it too. Straight outta high school I worked in the family business which was a music store. Had those kinds of questions every day, not just older people either it was anybody. Years later after college I'd worked couple years in an electronics store n a lot more of the same and a lot worse. 1 example: a guy comes in to the electronics store with a pane of glass in his hands, looks around sees the electronics parts n tools on every shelf then keeps asking me where the glass blowers were. He was still there out front after closing time when we were going home still wondering why there wasn't any glass blowers working in an electronics store. I shit you not. After that I promised myself never to work retail again and I haven't.

My grandmother keeps telling me how people tell her she can go to places to learn how to operate a real 'phone (as opposed to the piece of shit she has where the speaker that goes over the ear will not let you hear more than one syllable in ten), and so forth. And she tells us she always says to them "I don't wanna learn". I have not said it to her like this yet, but I am going to say one day, that is great. You are effectively making it a lot harder for us to communicate to you, making our ability to keep you abreast of plans that we involve you in a thousand times harder than it is to keep ourselves and our nearest in the loop. Things like that.
Perhaps the most insulting part is when she goes to read the physical printed bus timetables, and you keep showing her not only the timetable program on your 'phone, but literally how it is able to show you in real fukking time where the bus really is. I have absolutely said to her face, nobody reads those timetables anymore because, as you have told me more than once, the drivers call those timetables "wish lists". That the buses literally have tracking devices in them that my phone will show you their position up to thirty seconds ago.
What I am getting at is basically that there is being unaware and incompetent because you are elderly and time has taken its toll on you. But then there is also being perfectly compus and able in spite of being old, and choosing to be ignorant and stupid anyway. And the latter is so very, very aggravating.

Last week, I interacted with 2 geezers. One asked where an item in another department was and I directed him to the location in that department and he responded "Oh... it's in that department?" Not a hint of sarcasm. Then I also saw a guy "waiting to die". He was moving at like 1/8 speed and looked completely confused like he wasn't even sure what time it was, what country he was in, why their are other people wandering around moving at such high speeds, if he really came to buy what he was buying or if this was even the store he wanted to be at, or that he even understood how to use his hands, eyes or legs. If I was that old, I'd be like "Chop, chop, I got things to do before I croak!"

I've worked retail for almost 13 years, times it was pretty damn funny dealing with old people, and then of course sometimes I wanted to pull my hair out and tell them off. The ones that really get on my nerves are the ones that still know what's going on but refuse to even try to understand or learn to use the card reader. I realize a lot of old people really don't know or can't learn how to use them, but there's ones who can learn and use them but refuse them, and it gets really annoying...they act like the world owes them something because of their age, so they expect everyone to do everything for them.
