Funny story about throwing away good stuff. Where I work, corporate just started requiring "inedible" bananas with any freckles be destroyed, not donated; everything else that is edible or usable gets donated, but bananas can't be donated anymore. So when I found out, there were a few cases of bananas ready for destruction and they were very lightly freckled, so I snatched them, set them aside and started catching all my coworkers and telling them there were good bananas they could eat because they were going to be destroyed. They were freckled, but they tasted like those perfect bananas with the green-yellow gradient. Then I started messaging people to try to convince them to buy the "inedible" bananas and I started hiding banana bunches all over for them to pick up - It probably could have been a Donkey Kong level.

I just recently wandered over to my local game stop inside one of the last remaining malls (as the others have been demolished or have a sign on its ruins showing whats going to be there after its own destruction) An noticed their game demo cabinets was recently removed as you can see the wall behind where it stood had a mismatched paint to the rest of the shop an still had all the wires on the floor required to run one of those all bundled up with zip ties.

When I went to a Gamestop to buy a Vita, one of the guys gave me a free (pre-owned) travel case (that also had a plastic case inside of it for your games) for free as opposed to them originally going to throw it out. I'm guessing they had a surplus of them that it wasn't worth saving space for (since I did see the same case being sold in the store the day I bought my Vita). It wasn't exactly dumpster diving but it was still really nice of him to do that.
I just went to my local Gamestop and the entire store had been fired and rehired with a bunch of corporate shill types. Most of the games were gone and nearly everything was merch and digital code cards. I'm done with Gamestop.
I got a HUGE lot of PS2 games from a GameStop dumpster. In fact, they threw away so many, they didn't even take 'em out of that plastic drawer, they just threw the whole drawer away. Few days later, I went back and there was 6 or 7 of those plastic drawers FILLED with PS2 games. Granted, they weren't worth much, but I put 'em on eBay, in lots of 100 games (there was about 300 disks) for $25 each (basically selling them for a quarter each)....ONE person bought all of them in just a matter of days. I didn't try to trick people into thinking they were valuable, I mentioned they were disc sleeves only, various conditions, a lot of JamPack Demos and sports titles. Also got TONS of 3DS game cases....(and 3DS system boxes)....the MAJORITY of them still had the Club Nintendo codes in them. I got a couple T-shirts with them. There were a few that had gotten liquid damage, but still, I have 300-400 DS/3DS game cases, the vast majority have the manual....you know these things will be valuable to SOMEONE at some point.....people will lose their game cases, or they'll buy a lose game and there is a chance i'll have the case for it and it could be one that is worth $10 or more alone. I have found sealed HDMI cables, Wii accessories (like a battery charging dock with the batteries that still work). I have found Wii systems in terrible condition, but still working. Couple PS2 systems, Phat Xbox 360 with power brick (System had RRoD though, but it did have a 20GB hard drive attached)
I found a Nintendo Labo kit once , I mean it could of just been a bunch of brown cardboard but that's beside the point! I found something awesome so don't you dare take that away from me....

But in the past I’ve found (without the console) Black Mario Kart Wii Console Box (with inserts), 2 working Xbox 360’s (1 with a 120GB HD), a Nintendo (working) with Donkey Kong Country Returns, Brand New Life is Strange preorder figures, a bunch of lanyards, and of course posters. They ended up getting a newer dumpster that seems to hinder diving a lot more, and started securely locking the dumpsters so I’ve quit. One thing I found interesting is I would take some games that worked in the dumpster (some of which carried a $10 trade-in value) to a different GameStop and get trade-in Credit. We’re some pretty good times.
I mean I found an amiibo kiosk in full, a fully working ps3 slim, like 8 sealed Pokemon Scisor EX boxes, 4 sealed copies of some ATV game (2 PS4 copies and 2 Xbox One copies), a working Pokemon Sun cartridge, a fully working Kinect, and not to mention a TON of fully working games for ps3 and Xbox 360. And that's just from GameStop alone. Not to mention places like Staples, a few hardware stores, and a local game shop. And that's all within a year. :)
My cousin did that to gamestop cock-blocking them on a PS3 once. They were offering a kid 60$ for his entire PS3 lot, my cousin said "I'll give you 100" while in line to buy something else. He bought it from the kid right there and then and saved himself a significant chunk of money vs buying it from gamestop.
Best thing I got as an employee was when we ran this god awful promo (if that's what you'd even call it) where they made us wear beats headsets around our necks. The dumbest advertising idea and it didn't last long. But our dm said we could keep them so my managers and I all got beats headsets for free. That was cool.

My friend wanted to try diving, so i agreed to go to a gamestop with an isolated dumpster about an hour from where we live. We did find a box with 37 PS2 games and hello neighbor on xbox one. I know it's not "valuable" items, but more or less nostalgic because some of those playstation games were from our childhood.
I found 3 iPhones in the GameStop dumpster. They all powered on, but I couldn't get into them because of the passwords. Sold them to AppleShark for $200. I've found a ton of games too; PS2, Xbox 360, Wii, mostly. About 95% of them worked too. I even found a few of the 'promo' kiosk discs too, which are super cool. All the controllers I've found have been pretty busted, but they're always easy fixes. TO BE FAIRR THOUGH, I've only ever had luck dumpster diving at ONE GameStop. So I'm just gonna say that it's the managers not giving a shit.
I worked at GameStop for a year. The manager had to destroy any devices or accessories that were deemed "defective". But there were tons of games and other small stuff people brought in and just didn't want. I took home so many old ps3, Xbox 360, original Xbox, etc. games that we just couldn't take in trade and the customer just didn't want. That being said, we never threw away working consoles or controllers. Those dumpster dive videos are all just fake to get views. Although I'm sure at times GameStop employees throw away things that they don't destroy beforehand, but I'd have to say it's a very rare occurrence.
All I can think is that these lucky finds were from irresponsible dumping of stuff. A couple of those videos, the people actually put in and played some of what they found and they worked fine, so either the items weren't actually to be thrown away but were, someone was careless with what they marked to be trashed, or the videos were faked (which oddly enough had occurred when the trend picked up).
I found pc Sims 3 and a couple expansion packs and an Xbox controller (not sure which console) but I normally just find empty cases that I sell for $0.50 each or a bundle of 5 for $1 because some people wanna complete their games and it's suprisingly hard to find official cases without buying a game
I caught a guy dumpster driving in the middle of the day when I went to take out the trash, had to shoo him off. Fuckers kept breaking the locks and warping the dumpster lid. Had his GF/wife waiting in the car, stuffed to brim with broken tools and metal.
About the posters, at my local gs I'm able to claim some posters before they take them down. Not sure if that's a regular thing they do. They're also happy to give away extra posters lying around and taking up space. I just ask if they have anything they want out now.
Also remembered from when i worked gs. No good stuff thrown out. Maybe a random 3rd party controller that was also broken. I tried taking home a broken controller to fix it but it was toast. And i remeber smashing broken 3rd party guitar hero stuff.

This wasn't a Gamestop Dumpster but I was helping someone toss their stuff in a Dumpster because of downsizing. She had big mood swings and if she thought too long she might keep stuff she doesn't need. There were 8-10 DS case and games stuff that I brought down from her sons room because someone else their thought I would want them. I keep them in their cases and brought them downstairs. She saw them and said they had to go in the Dumpster, took them and tossed them. If only I took the games out and shoved them in my pocket before bringing them down stairs. I felt really bad that they had to go in the Dumpster. That was atleast $40 trade credit at Gamestop being M&L Partners in Time and M&L Bowsers inside story and I think atleast 1 pokemon game. Her son was Involved with drugs so that was one reason she said i could not have them and she felt games are Evil. It wasn't worth the neighbor's calling the police jumping in the Dumpster after she left. What she did let me walk away with were 2 computer monitors a PS3 Wireless Controller and a Mario kart Wii plastic wheel. A few other things but I don't recall what they were that I thought my sister could use for her first apartment. It's still sad that had to happen that day but it was better not to put her in a full mental shut down of anxiety attack.
I went to my GameStop and I found 2 games and a working 360. The only problem was the 2 memories card slots were stuck open and broken, dosnt effect gameplay and I just use a hardrrive. Was not in the dump but bet to it in a box. Also had all course and controller charger but no controllers, along with a headset I trashed cuz I ain’t shout that life

I collect Jampacks and Playstation Underground disks. The games in those discs more often than not played differently than the real games.

I found 3 iPhones in the GameStop dumpster. They all powered on, but I couldn't get into them because of the passwords. Sold them to AppleShark for $200. I've found a ton of games too; PS2, Xbox 360, Wii, mostly. About 95% of them worked too. I even found a few of the 'promo' kiosk discs too, which are super cool. All the controllers I've found have been pretty busted, but they're always easy fixes. TO BE FAIRR THOUGH, I've only ever had luck dumpster diving at ONE GameStop. So I'm just gonna say that it's the managers not giving a shit.
My friend got a fully working Xbox one. I’m still really shocked at that, and that happened at least two years ago. It still works to this day.
I worked at GameStop for a year. The manager had to destroy any devices or accessories that were deemed "defective". But there were tons of games and other small stuff people brought in and just didn't want. I took home so many old ps3, Xbox 360, original Xbox, etc. games that we just couldn't take in trade and the customer just didn't want. That being said, we never threw away working consoles or controllers. Those dumpster dive videos are all just fake to get views. Although I'm sure at times GameStop employees throw away things that they don't destroy beforehand, but I'd have to say it's a very rare occurrence.

All I can think is that these lucky finds were from irresponsible dumping of stuff. A couple of those videos, the people actually put in and played some of what they found and they worked fine, so either the items weren't actually to be thrown away but were, someone was careless with what they marked to be trashed, or the videos were faked (which oddly enough had occurred when the trend picked up).
Until I saw a buy and seller in Chicago do it for wrapping and cardboard I never knew did it either but people do.
I found pc Sims 3 and a couple expansion packs and an Xbox controller (not sure which console) but I normally just find empty cases that I sell for $0.50 each or a bundle of 5 for $1 because some people wanna complete their games and it's suprisingly hard to find official cases without buying a game

I caught a guy dumpster driving in the middle of the day when I went to take out the trash, had to shoo him off. Fuckers kept breaking the locks and warping the dumpster lid.
Had his GF/wife waiting in the car, stuffed to brim with broken tools and metal.

About the posters, at my local gs I'm able to claim some posters before they take them down. Not sure if that's a regular thing they do. They're also happy to give away extra posters lying around and taking up space. I just ask if they have anything they want out now.

Also remembered from when i worked gs. No good stuff thrown out. Maybe a random 3rd party controller that was also broken. I tried taking home a broken controller to fix it but it was toast. And i remeber smashing broken 3rd party guitar hero stuff.
I do dumpster diving and mind you it’s not at a retail store but I found an original NES and a bunch of games and controllers still worked

I usually dumpster dive for ds cases and posters. Then when I finally got they were cool about and told me to ask about the stuff. But I never do it often.
Still got my awesome MW2, Brutal Legend and Guitar 5 posters from the dumbster... in 2018... they survived 3 moves.

This wasn't a Gamestop Dumpster but I was helping someone toss their stuff in a Dumpster because of downsizing. She had big mood swings and if she thought too long she might keep stuff she doesn't need. There were 8-10 DS case and games stuff that I brought down from her sons room because someone else their thought I would want them. I keep them in their cases and brought them downstairs. She saw them and said they had to go in the Dumpster, took them and tossed them. If only I took the games out and shoved them in my pocket before bringing them down stairs. I felt really bad that they had to go in the Dumpster. That was atleast $40 trade credit at Gamestop being M&L Partners in Time and M&L Bowsers inside story and I think atleast 1 pokemon game. Her son was Involved with drugs so that was one reason she said i could not have them and she felt games are Evil. It wasn't worth the neighbor's calling the police jumping in the Dumpster after she left. What she did let me walk away with were 2 computer monitors a PS3 Wireless Controller and a Mario kart Wii plastic wheel. A few other things but I don't recall what they were that I thought my sister could use for her first apartment. It's still sad that had to happen that day but it was better not to put her in a full mental shut down of anxiety attack.
I do look in the GameStop dumpster by my house because I do find games in there all the time, and they aren't scratched

I went to my GameStop and I found 2 games and a working 360. The only problem was the 2 memories card slots were stuck open and broken, dosnt effect gameplay and I just use a hardrrive. Was not in the dump but bet to it in a box. Also had all course and controller charger but no controllers, along with a headset I trashed cuz I ain’t shout that life

One time my friends and I went and we found a bunch of empty DS cases. There were some pokemon black and white 1 and 2 cases. I wish I could make it to the expo but unfortunately I live in PA :/.
