      I think you're grossly mistaken.
It's not that the amount of comedy is an annoying aspect of the marvel movies, it's that you're annoyed by the amount.
The problem is not in the movies, The problem is you're annoyed.
Solution, stop bitching about it and go do something you enjoy, thus you'll have a better life.

It originally felt like The Comics come to life during phase 1. There was the occasional screw up like Iron Man 3 but eventually we got to the point where Kevin Feige started taking too many liberties with the source material and started putting too much emphasis on comedy to the point it now feels like a parody of the Comics.

'There are moments when you really wanna feel something and the movie doesn't let you' I agree completely. When watching Thor and Asgard is blown up, it's this really intense scene and you start to think of the magnitude of what's just happened, but then it's just instantly cut by a joke. I enjoy the comedy in Marvel but sometimes it needs to hold back.

Its because they tried it out and it didn't hit the mark. The comedy version got better reactions so it makes the final cut. Marvel movies are not for drama, its for action and comedy. I don't sit there and am worried about the safety of any of the characters because the movie doesn't set itself up like a drama. Its more like a heist movie. Fun, action, and comedy. However, I will say there is more of that drama aspect in earlier films like Sam Raimi's spiderman movies where peter is struggling with just living a life as well as being a super hero. The only time humor got involved was when peter was saying a cute little comeback to a villain. But to me it seems like they stepped away from that and went full on fun for the kids summer blockbuster hollywood type movie.

    • @pointless132
      @pointless132 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@Unpopular Opinions I saw it recently. It wasn't all that dark. It was actually more fun than anything. I'd say it's even perfectly in character for Kurt Russel to act the way he does, the guy simply doesn't take anything seriously.
He doesn't start quipping, he just acts like a dad punishing his son for misbehaving because that's how he sees it.
He's just a deluded psychipath demigod so he takes it to an extreme.
I think the one truly egregious moment comes during the final fight when Quill turns into Pacman.

I don’t belief that it was supposed to be comedic, Star Lord is developed as an immature, rash, and emotional throughout the two films, so it makes sense for him to fire is guns randomly in any attempt for revenge. Ego has a very high view of himself, as a god, so it makes sense for him to respond the way he does at first. Then, when becomes David Hasselhov, he’s not trying to be funny, he’s trying to emotionally manipulate his son with the image of the dad he always wished he had.

While I normally keep quiet about these things I cannot disagree more about yopur point in Guardians 2. Regarding the scene with Ego's confession about Quills mother. I thought that was not in any way funny. It's stated earlier in the movie that Quill would tell other kids that Hasslehoff was his father. Something that is both tragic and sad. Quill even admits this. The fact that Quill, without hesitation took action against the person he was so happy to see immediately made me emotional. He took away the most important person in his life. And he reacted in a very human way. Nothing about that was supposed to be funny. If you took it that way, fine. But looking at it from a writing and storytelling point of view it was not supposed to be funny.

This summed up everything I was thinking during this part of the video, (just without the immense swearing and visible anger) this part of the film can be funny to some people but to everyone else (myself included) this was meant to be emotional and it fits with Quill's character perfectly and you can even see that carry over into infinity war. I would never say that even one Marvel movie has no flaws because they all have some flaws, all movies have flaws (APART FROM THE DARK NIGHT THAT FILM IS A MASTERSTROKE AND NO ONE CAN CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE) but I still love almost all of them and the others I at least like, (apart from Black Panther, I'm not being racist I just think that some of the choices in the film's writing weren't as good as the could have been and also the CGI fight at the end was just stupid.) There, rant over, thank you for summing up what I was thinking, and now I must depart. YEET!!!

I totally agree with your criticism about Dr Strange, but criticising comedies for having jokes is a bit weird. The GotG movies and Thor: Ragnarok are straight comedies, so of course they're gonna build up a "serious" moment and then "ruin" it with a joke, that's how comedies work. Dr Strange, however, is not a comedy, and is full of serious and emotional moments (not that the comedies aren't), and on many occasions they undercut them with a joke, and it totally takes you off, but in the MCU comedies, this should be expected...

I disagree with his thoughts on Thor: Ragnarok but Guardians of the Galaxy does have a lot of bad humour in it. I understand comedy is subjective, but when humour gets in the way of a serious moment it's not good comedy. In Thor, I think the joke that followed the serious moment actually made that moment, and the subsequent scene better. David Hasselhoff showing up mid sentence in GotG2 just made me scoff. The joke undercut the whole point of the scene for me.

I agree that the David Hasselhoff scene there was badly timed, but I think the rest of the movie times its' humour much better. And the end sequence with Yondu's death is so efficient at making me emotional without breaking it with humour that I find myself loving the overall end product. I guess it might have been a bit more emotional had the revelation between Ego and Quill been done better, but to me I just don't feel like that so-so scene ruins the whole movie. It just fails to improve the whole movie.

It shows that above all, even after meeting his father and knowing that he's a literal God, Quill is still a little kid at heart that has nothing but love for his mom. Even Ego saying "Who in the hell do you think you are" doesn't ruin what's been going on, I think it shows just how pissed he is that his son would try murdering him. The moment that ruins the scene for me is when Ego transforms into Hasslehoff, which completely ruins the revelation and (in my opinion) Peter's appropriate reaction

Wonderful essay and I think as you say, the Raimi films are funny and cheesy and tongue-in-cheek yet none of that negates the emotion and stakes. I feel like instead of a lot of the comedy in these MCU films stemming naturally from the world and the characters, they feel tacked on a lot of the time. Like they hired another guy to come in and 'punch up' the script with jokes.
Grimdark is not the only way that superhero stories can have stakes and real emotion, and there are several films which show that.
Once you use humour to deflate most of the more dramatic elements of the film (and in some cases, quite literally after a moment of character building is supposed to happen), then it makes the whole thing feel empty. It is almost as if Marvel is afraid of having real weight in their films so they hide it behind humour.
And the Cap, Bucky and Tony battle coupled with T'Challa's scene with Zemo is some of the best stuff, emotion-wise, Marvel has done. That and the entirety of TWS show that the Russos are great, and the real problem, as you say, lies with Marvel Studios and not necessarily the filmmakers they hired. (Exception to that would probably be Vol 2, as I think Gunn was given carte blanche in that case).

While I agree with the complaints about Thor and Dr. Strange, I disagree about Civil War. I found the airport scene to be realistic emotionally, most of the heroes fighting each other are friends, and have worked together for years. Clint and Natasha have a pre established relationship so the “we’re still friends right?” feels natural. Same goes for the banter between Hawkeye and Iron Man, even though they are fighting each other, they aren’t trying to kill each other (except Panther and Bucky). I don’t think there would be a way to write that scene without some bathos, without some levity. If the battle didn’t have the humor it would feel, I don’t know, melodramatic? I also think the end of act 2 needed to be light, in order to fully grasp the importance of the REAL fight (Steve v Tony), because that fight is real, it’s raw. Sorry for the rant! I realized the MCU wasn't really about respecting the source material but making everything a big joke. Most of their directors are known for making sitcoms. I get it, they couldn't use every character since they didn't have the rights. But whose fault was that? MARVEL 's! They only know the basics of every character and have to shove in dumb jokes to make up for the shitty writing. And I know the movies can't be 100% like the comics but they could atleast try to give them more depth instead of just being big dumb action movies. As bad as the DCEU is atleast they TRY to get to know those characters before they adapt them. Seems like Marvel Studios doesn't respect those characters at all but they know people will still go see them just because they see that big red logo. I used to be a big Marvel fan but once I got the wool from over my eyes I realized that these adaptations were just watered-down versions of the comics I used to read back in the day. And shoving Stan Lee in every one was just a cheap way of pandering IMO. I have no interest in the next phase of the MCU. They blew their load with ENDGAME.

    • @rams3955
      @rams3955 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@Anipixelz dude tonal consistency doesn't mean you can't have comedy. The Lord of the rings movies are dark fantast epics yet there are moments of levity constantly however what matters is when and how that humor is used and if it fits in the movie. Take Winter soldier the best marvel film by far the movie opens on quips with cap and falcon. It's used perfectly here because it feels natural and it's for the purpose of characters bonding. Now take civil war where the entire movie pauses whenever it feels like the movie is getting too serious. Bucky and falcon noddin in the car when cap kisses Carter's niece. A dramatic fight between being laden with quips and jokes eliminating virtually any stakes and the worst one of all at the end of the film Rhodes is paralyzed weve just had this dramatic climax and it ends on a joke with him saying Tony stank GET IT CUZ HIS LAST NAME IS STARK NOT STANK HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Tonal consistency is important in films and books and any type of story telling. I mean comedies can have drama and dramas can have comedy in them but if ur film can't seem to make up it's mind on which it wants to primarily be and the two tones are clashing then you've failed as a filmmaker. I'll use the Truman show as an example that movie is a freaking Master class in how to make a dramatic comedy, the comedy is never forced it comes from the character and his setting while the drama slowly builds over time as he slowly begins to learn his life is a lie then the movie is almost entirely a drama for it's final act. These tones are consistent they don't class they work perfectly together. Marvel has failed at this in almost every movie post guardians 1 because everything after that movie they've felt needs to be laugh out loud fun so any time they try to go darker they still feel forced to add forced humor. Infinity war did a slightly better job but still alot of humor was out of place and I still hate how they turned drax into a joke of a character.

The jokes are pretty much all the same, awkward safe humor and references to old movies. I'm left wondering, "Do people actually talk like this? Just randomly bring up old movies in their jokes?" What I like about Wonder Woman (1st one) and what I like about Shazam is that those movies FEEL different from one another. Shazam is a cheesy, campy superhero movie, while Wonder Woman is a fish-out-of-water war movie from what I remember. I'm about positive that Shang-Chi will use the same boring awkward humor that the other MCU movies have. They'll probably be the cute, quirky girl protagonist and forced romance as well.

Odin dying doesn't even make sense, is just a sort of an anti-deux machinima, so the whole plot doesn't solve in 30 seconds. Then Loki suffers no consequence ir rage from Thor, despite Osama Bin Laden attack on New York and killing his dad. He treats him as if he were a kid that didn't eat his vegetables. A truly retarded film, I wish it were declared non-canon

I think you're not seeing how a scene can do more than one thing. It can be comedic but also say something more. The David Hasselhoff scene in GotGv2 shows how Ego is still trying to manipulate Peter, who stated in a previous scene that he had always dreamed about Hasselhoff being his dad. Same thing with the Ragnarök scene; 'Get Help' shows the former friendship between Thor and Loki. This inside joke between them is a great relationship moment as well as obivously having a comedic purpose. But I still get your point. I also don't like that Dr Strange moment and there are more like this all over the MCU. I just think you could have taken some better examples.

The MCU movies are pretty much dumbed down for the average movie watcher and kids/teens and follow the same formula. I watched Endgame once since I wanted to see how the current phase was going to end but I think I'm pretty much done with the MCU. I'll go back to manga and anime.

The Campy jokes are completely out of control. It seems they keep the same formula for every movie. I have figured out why this is. They need to reach people who are not necessarily fans of comics... So stupid people basically. They don't trust that the storyline and characters will be enough to hold their attention, so they throw humor in to break it up. Stupid people love jokes... especially really lame, campy ones. I think the humor is for the idiots who do not actually care about the plot or the characters.

I have seen many Marvel fanboys saying Martin Scorsese, christopher Nolan, James Cameron are overrate their movies are boring.
They comparr the masterpieces with MCU movies and trash the good quality movie . they think 2-3 action scenes, cringe forced humour, that's movies for them.
I use to think like this when I was 10-16 .

I'm in the same boat as you. I was a huge fan of the MCU and I used to get super hyped up about Civil War and Infinity War and stuff but now as I've become an adult I've started to realise how generic and formulaic they really are. Every movie is basically the same, big CGI fights, generic orchestral music, lack of character depth, lame jokes, etc. When I think of Marvel, I think of Daredevil on Netflix, the X: Men films, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films not the MCU. It doesn't try to do anything different or creative. They know that people will literally watch anything that they put out so they just keep bringing more generic shit out and that's the sad truth but I'm glad that DC is doing something different. For example, I'm super excited for The Batman and after seeing the last two Planet of The Apes films, I think Matt Reeves is gonna absolutely kill it!

THANK YOU. I couldn't really stand the humour even when I was younger, to be honest. I don't mind having a few laughs while watching serious actions scenes or whatever, don't get me wrong. It just that the kind that's used in these movies feels very, very cheap in my opinion.
Update on my opinion after 1 year: So... everything Marvel sorta grew on me since the beginning of this year. Ngl even at the point of making this comment I was pretty uptight about superhero stuff. And I kinda regret it. I finally managed to let go of a sorta "higher than thou" attitude when it came to people liking this type of film and I ended up enjoying it myself.
Have to agree that while some things don't land sometimes with the MCU, I'd say a whole lot do. Maybe not what you wanna hear as a person willing to hate on Marvel like I used to at some point, but idk I'm just being truthful rn. :))

Best Marvels movies are the ones that are not produced by Disney. Movies like Logan, X Men Days of Future Past, X Men First Class, The Amazing Spider-Man, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, X Men 1 and 2, Daredevil and Pu nisher on Netflix are some of the things based on Marvel comics. And the MCU movies after Thor 2011 started following this generic formula and basically every one of them feels the same with jokes that have to be made every 5 mins and characters not taking themselves to seriously

you are right, but you draw the wrong conclusions. Indeed, these movies are tonally all over the place, but it's only your problem: you want complex characters, gripping drama, themes, in short, you want serious movies. But you have to see that these movies are: 1: superhero movies, 2: blockbuster movies. Neither genre lends itself to too much seriousness.
These movies have to cater to large audiences, and as you can see from the box office numbers, they succeed.
If you want serious superhero movies, you have to look elsewhere: the Nolan movies, Watchmen, Super, Kick Ass, Mystery Men, Chronicle.... but since they are more serious, and less interested in spectacle, they in turn don't bring that much profit either, with maybe the exception of the Batman trilogy

I actually kinda disagree on your criticism of civil war losing its tone. Most of the comedy there is produced by ant man and spider man, both of whom are naturally funny and relatively new recruits who don't understand the magnanimity of the event and the stakes involved. SO technically they were just being themselves and helping out whoever asked them for help.

I loved the first part, because of how it didn't take itself seriously. In fact, maybe that's the only Marvel movie I genuinely enjoyed (I'm sure I'll love Ragnarök, but I didn't have the chance to see that yet). But in Guardians 2, I don't think the tonal shifts were the problem. I didn't really care about Peter and his daddy issues (or anyone's daddy issues) in the first place, and Ego is a typical comic book character so I couldn't take him seriously. However, I didn't mind these. What my problems were though is that the humour is much cheaper and wants to wink at us constantly (the only exception is Drax. I love that guy). The humour in the first one was charming and quirky. My other problem was that it became too much like the other Marvel movies, and the complete third act was just one big and overly drawn out setpiece.

This was my biggest problem with Infinity War. It's a good movie, all things considered, but I don't place it as high as a lot of people do, because the entire movie is a tonal mess.
It was built up for years to be this big, dark, serious event that was going to push the heroes to their limit. But it's hard to take it seriously when it's constantly trying to get multiple laughs out of you every 2 minutes--including during what should be very serious, emotional scenes.

    • @SoraAuditore
      @SoraAuditore 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@The Cambot Tonal mess because it's hard to take anything seriously when almost every serious moment in the movie is undercut by, or followed up with a joke. The only time I felt the weight of what was happening was the last 20 minutes.
Aside from that, my only other serious issue with both Infinity War and Endgame is that a lot of development and seemingly important stuff happens off-screen (for example: Hawkeye becoming Ronin, Thor's depression).
Infinity War and Endgame easily could have been their own Phase of the MCU, instead of being an ending to Phase 3.

I agree that the comedy is sometimes poorly timed, but you can't call this a "big" problem for Marvel. Marvel is doing great, its one of the highest grossing franchises of all time and it regularly breaks box office records no matter the comedy level of each film. The movies aren't masterpieces of film but they're not meant to be. They're meant to be broad appeal money machines and they succeed at that more than any other franchise out right now.
I agree that the comedy should be managed and that it COULD become a "big problem" for Marvel. But right now it's not a problem, people are still paying hundreds of millions to a billion to see each film. It's not a problem until the market says it is.

I feel that the Ant-Man films offer a nice blend of comedy and sincerity that most modern Marvel films seem to lack. The emotional moments always feel genuine because they are hardly ever undercut with jokes that come immediately after them; in fact the only joke I can think of that does this is in the first film is when Scott butts into Hank's emotional confession to Hope, something that all the characters comment on in the same scene.
The worst offender in my eyes is the scene in GotG Volume 2 where Nebula answers a crewmember's question about what she'll do when she retrieves the 'batteries' by describing the trauma she sufferred at the hands of Thanos (and Gamora), only for him to respond with a stupid line about her buying jewellery. Then again, this could just be a by-product of James Gunn and Marvel's sh*tty treatment of women, but I digress.
TL; DR: go watch the Ant-Man movies right now!

Marvel's biggest problem here is Disney. The mouse isn't interested in elevating their movies. All that matters is the money they make. If test audiences overwhelmingly rate a movie's humor as being their favorite aspect then LA LA logic states that the more you add the more money it will make and from what we've seen thus far who can say their wrong. Just don't expect anything to rise too often above the level of brain dead entertainment. After all, success can always buy prestige in Hollywood.
I'm not too much bothered by this because one can expect that 99% of anything will be crap but it's the 1% that bucks the average that makes it worthwhile. My problem is that it appears as though They've conditioned audiences to expect that all super hero movies must be popcorn comedies but comic book fans know better. We know that these characters are capable of far greater range than the house of the mouse will permit. Maybe with the recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox they can be moved under that banner for greater artistic flexibility. Time will tell.

I completely agree that marvel needs to reign in their use of bathos for comedic purposes, they shouldn't stop using it completely because if done right, it can really be meaningful and say something about the characters (adventure time has mastered this I find). I think Bathos can work, it just depending on the timing. Good example in the MCU is when Hulk was beating up Loki mid-monologue in the Avengers. It undercuts Loki's dramatic speech, but doesn't actually undercut any legitimate drama. The issue with a lot of more recent MCU films is that their use of bathos impedes on legitimate dramatic moments.

but that does not stop Guardians 2 from being a bad film

6:40 This was not meant to be funny. That’s like saying Star Lord punching Thanos in Infinity War is intended to make the audience laugh. It’s a pivotal moment and Peter’s reaction is in line with his character.
I respect your opinion overall but simply disagree. Most people that have serious beef with Marvel movies I’ve found hate the films for the same reasons that hundreds of millions love the films. I can’t do dry, ultra serious super hero films. I don’t think it’s inherently wrong to lighten moods with jokes. I think it’s a proven part of what has made marvel so successful, and a critical part in marvel maintaining its general public audience post End Game

My problem is that the mcu was popularized so much, to the point the one thing that made me unique was ruined by people who laughed at me for loving it a few months before the infinity war trailer was released.
Remember when being a nerd wasn’t cool

In guardians 2 when he finds out his dad killed his mum, to me at least is not meant to be a comedic moment. Peter quill let’s his emotions control him essentially when it comes to people he loves, that moment is his anger and then fathers disgust as he thinks what he is doing is for peter. It’s a really good moment in the film and helps build his character so he can become the reason they cannot get the gauntlet in infinity war

Ì completely understand and agree with you, and I'm no expert but I have some things to say about that scene in ragnarok with thor and loki and your observation that the movie didn't 'give us time' to feel that bonding and zoomed straight into comedy.
    1. The way I think Waititi structured the movie (even though it doesn't exactly align with the rest of MCU in that matter) is to have these characters face adversity and adventure in the same, constantly comic-spirited way. I think that to have thor and loki stop at that moment would have hurt the sanguine nature of the movie.
    2. Think about the Avengers and the little scenes between the brothers in it. In one scene, the Black Widow tells thor of the havoc loki has wrecked and he replies with, 'he's adopted' and a shrug. Before that, when Tony and Cap first confront thor after he tries to take loki away, we see loki taking pleasure in Thor getting his ass kicked. I feel that these two have always been portrayed one way throughout the series and it wouldn't feel right to have a poignant moment like that between them when there's no big reason or inciting incident to break that norm (like their mother dying, which actually made that happen a little)
They are, after all, comic characters. We want to believe that they'll live forever. That they'll keep on bickering and teaming up and bickering again long after we are gone. I mean, sure, when/if thor dies in infinity war I would not like to see the moment treated in a Waititi way, but still, this kinda made sense to me. (sorry for the rant idk why i got this intense)

You know why taika waititi refused to direct GOTG 3.
because he used all his crappy jokes in thor Ragnarok.

STFU Taika Waititi Is Comedy Genius See his other movies and Ragnarok wasn't bad its flaw is he tried to make thor funny which he never was that's why it feels strange

Dude the scene where Gamora asks Star Lord to kill her if thanos gets her gets ruined for me by Drax's comedy, they should've made the scene be more serious.

That is sooo awkward. This is from the heart. I feel that stating outright that there is a ‘problem with marvel’ and then it turns out that ‘problem’ is literally some very minor moments is a little ridiculous... this is my ‘problem’ with peoples problem with things in general. People take VERY minute tiny things that rub them the wrong way and blow it up into that tiny thing being the ENTIRE thing... people, it’s okay to like things about things. Really, we can learn to better enjoy things, it’s okay! We can have gripes, but let them be gripes. Making ‘problems’ out of simple gripes is why the world is just drowning in negativity these days. And we can truly enjoy the wonderful life we live... live the dream my friends, may the force be with you!

IMO marval films are very corny and cringe. I understand that they are lighthearted films but still
