  • Starting P4 in Super Stock CR125 class, Hegar (#4) dropped out due to a wheel coming off so I shuffled up to P2. In front of us are the european shifter engines and behind are about 30 sprint stock and super stock CR125s. JG (#7) and Mike (#17) got a really good draft off the euro karts which are a bit faster and drove away from the rest of us for awhile. I caught up to JG for a little bit due to traffic but his engine was really boogieing and he was able to make a gap again, then he had mechanical issues and was forced to retire from the race. I battled it out with the rest of the Super Stocks for the lead and finished 3rd place.
    2nd race I was wrecked into on the first lap and though I didn't go off track a lot of the field passed me by. Worked my way back up through most of the field but never caught the lead pack again. Managed to make it back up to 7th place. I do not have video of this or the 3rd race unfortunately, the video files are corrupted. The hit I took may have busted my camera.
    3rd race nobody in the lead pack had mechanical issues and I was able to stick with Hegar, Mike, and JG for a long time. About halfway through, lapped traffic split JG and I from Hegar and Mike too much and we never caught up but I battled JG for 3rd the rest of the race. Sadly I was unable to make a pass stick on the final lap despite many tries and finished 4th. (scratch that, scoring seems to have placed me 3rd and JG 2nd, where did Hegar go?) It is really unfortunate that this video did not come out as there was a lot of excellent racing. It was probably the best race I've had so far.

      Dunno about the different brands. I always drove a Swiss Hutless entirely because the importer was my local karting shop and that meant I never had to worry about keeping a large supply of spares. If I wrecked I just went over to his trailer and got new parts right there at the track. I'm sure all the major brands are plenty competitive, including Praga. I chose the Van Diemen when I got a Formula Continental for a similar reason. It is the most common car, was the spec car for USF2000 for many years, so if I break something I don't have I can pretty much always find someone in the pits to bum a part from.

      Must have forgot to replace pin clip on axle nut! ...nut will spin off for sure on left wheel (rotates in direction to loosen axle nut). Safety guys! check, recheck before rushing to grid. I've been karting for decades, equipment failure injuries are almost always something stupid and avoidable like this guy's wheel falling off .. other recurring failures are brake and steering system cotter pins not being replaced ... and brake line compression couplings pulling / popping apart. This stuff can happen, assuming this will happen, add redundant features to at least protect yourself and others from injury (think well beyond the sanctioning body tech rules). For instance, I do crazy stuff like adding a 2nd rear axle redundant brake system, or brake balancers that limit travel in the event hydraulic pressure is lost in one loop... or double linkage rods, etc .. overkill? Absolutely not .. go back and watch this guy's wheel fall off again, LOL ... this isn't one unusual stupid person .. this is what happens to normal people who are racing, working fast in the pits trying to make their grid starting time with the best, fastest setup they can bring to the line .. S$&T happens.

    In kart racing, there is a great advantage of being able to easily brake with the left foot while keeping the rev of the engine up with the right foot. This can be done in cars but only with greater skill and complexity of feet movement. This driver drove well but somehow didn't keep the rev up through corners and for that he lost a lot of time. On the whole, this group of racers is very advanced in their kart driving skill. I am amazed by the #9 racer who kept looking over his shoulders to check on the pursuing kart behind him.

      Every chassis manufacturer makes an extended front porch kit for tall drivers, you should be fine. Come out and race, the older stiffer frames do very well on the big road courses. I prefer my 2011 swiss 1 to the brand new swiss evo on these tracks.

      MonoLykos Sometimes I can mount the camera on my helmet, that is my most preferred location, but most events the camera is not allowed anywhere on your body. Dumb safety liability nonsense, you know how it is. I have put it on the front fairing before but that makes for a very wobbly video and I get more useful information when I can see what I'm doing with my hands and feet anyway.

    how many weekends do you get at the track each year in Washington? my dad does club days with his track car. I think he should sell it and get a cart. why spend more money to go slower, right?

    • @ZizinRacing
      @ZizinRacing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike Rothwell It depends, you could easily fill every weekend in the summer with a race like I did last season if you also do sprint track racing (small tight tracks designed specifically for karts). If you just do big tracks like The Ridge there aren't as many though, last season there were two races at The Ridge, two at Portland International (including Rose Cup exhibition), and one at Oregon Raceway Park. There might be less in the Northwest next year since there will be no karts at the Rose Cup and I don't know if PKA has enough money to put on a lot of races. I know people have been trying to get in a race at Pacific Raceways/Seattle too so I hope that happens.
      I also went down to Laguna Seca in January. If you're willing to travel to California, the NCK group also has a full road race schedule. I think their last race is this weekend actually at Sonoma. I would have gone but I'm out of money right now, haha.

    • @TheCorrectionist1984
      @TheCorrectionist1984 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      well it just looks awesome. apparently you are about 10s faster around per lap than a GT3 prosche. I'm in law school right now but once I have a paying job, I'm definitely going to get into karting. I've done some pretty fast karts in Texas and compared to doing laps in a Z06, the kart put a much bigger smile on my face.
      I guess because of my background doing club road race days, I'm not that interested in circle track stuff. Are there road race style tracks that let you have lapping even if there's no actual race held? Wheel to wheel is fun but I also like just trying to push the lap on an individual level like qualifying.

    • @ZizinRacing
      @ZizinRacing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike Rothwell Haha yeah, not a lot of top speed in the straights but cornering speeds are like winged open wheel cars so lap times are pretty impressive.
      Many race weekends have a practice day before the race day. You are not obligated to pay for the race day too if you just want to practice. I recommend coming out to the races too though, it's a lot of fun and if you choose a big popular class there's someone to race with no matter where your budget and skill level places you in the pack. Don't worry about being in the way, there are a lot of novice racers around and the fast guys can get around them no problem. Also, if you join a local sprint racing club you can usually use the track whenever you want for an incredibly small fee. By sprint track I don't mean ovals, they're just like a road course only half as wide and under a mile long. This is the one I am a member of: portlandkarting.com/club-info/track-info Straight is still long enough to get up over 90 in a shifter.
      The Ridge actually just completed their own sprint track a couple months ago. It's a miniature version of the big track flipped around the other direction.

    • @TheCorrectionist1984
      @TheCorrectionist1984 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh shit. that is awesome. so are you an Oregonian then? I live in the Seattle area.
      Yea, that is why the laptime is so amazing cuz the GT3 is probably hitting 150 on the straights and you're still 10s faster. I saw you pulling 2g through the section I call "faux rouge" and even 3g in part of the corkscrew. That is incredible w/o downforce.

    • @ZizinRacing
      @ZizinRacing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike Rothwell I am in Vancouver WA, might as well be Oregon. Go karts are pretty impressive with the cornering Gs they can pull, gotta build up neck muscles to hold your head straight lol.

    #1 youre much more focused than your earlier videos, i assume from being more experienced plus a better knowledge of courses

    • @ZizinRacing
      @ZizinRacing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      diabolicvirgo017 Yeah, I have gotten a lot better. There was a nightmare lapped traffic race during that weekend but I did not get video of it because my camera died. Over 60 karts on track at once with a lot of multiclass. Trying to pass a bunch of laydowns without losing the draft of the other 125cc leaders can get pretty hairy.

    • @ZizinRacing
      @ZizinRacing  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The power band on the Honda CR125 is lower than the European KZ shifter engines. On these it drops off like a rock after about 12400 RPM.

    • @BigRalphSmith
      @BigRalphSmith 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      HairyFruitOfPassion
      Understood.
      At the same time, the rate of RPM climb coming out of a curve is still a good indicator of whether or not an engine has been wound up enough during the transition in the corner. These kart engines don't really spend much time in the rafters except in the back half of the straights so the lower torque at high revs isn't a significant performance drawback for them.
      I'd still like to know what Llyda9 was trying to say.

    • @llyda993
      @llyda993 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      when you get a draft your rpms rise. you want to be in your powerband for as long as possible. when you have the draft you dont want to be topping it out

      @ZizinRacing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Thomas Harrell It's not automatic, it's a dirt bike engine and transmission. Straight off a Honda CR125, it's a spec engine class. The clutch is that paddle on the steering wheel, you only really need it for taking off from a stop.

      @tomharrell1954 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ZIZIN How old are you? Do you own the kart or drive for somebody? Do you have a fabrication shop? Did you make the kart or buy it? What are the regulations for the class.

    • @ZizinRacing
      @ZizinRacing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am 26, I own the kart. There isn't really a lot of stuff you can fabricate on karts. There are a large selection of chassis manufacturers to choose from but they do have to be homologated. You'd have to have an R&D team full of engineers to be able to design one that's fast on your own, they may look simple but there's actually a lot of engineering put into them. A chassis from 2015 is way faster than a chassis from 2005 even.
      The regulations on this Stock CR125 class in particular are pretty simple, just has to be a legal chassis and a stock 1999 CR125 engine and transmission, which Honda continues to produce specifically for kart racing. There's a little more to it than that like what pipe you can use and '01 cylinders are ok too and so on but that's the gist of it anyway. It's the most popular shifter class in the USA right now by far since the "Mod Honda" (engine development class for the CR125) have a tendency to blow up and the European KZ engines are really expensive.

      Thanks for the come back.
      So you go to the Go Kart race shop and buy a chassis, 1999CR125 engine and tranny, and slap em together. My oh My some of the drivers I have seen would cheat. No porting or changing parts? Is fuel gas or ethanol, methane. Are mixtures allowed.
      What about brakes, tires and wheels?
      Are the frames carbon fiber?
      This is really cool, come become addictive quickly.

      I looked at the specs of the Honda CR125 Engine. Something like this?
      type: 124 cc air cooled, single-cylinder,, two-stroke, producing, 22 hp (claimed), carburetion 28mm Keihin, Transmission close ratio six speed, and bore and stroke 56 x 50 mm. I always wanted to put my Kawasaki 750 cc engine and tranny on a Kart. It had 72 horse power. If properly geared and constructed with carbon fiber frame, a kart with that engine and tranny would easily make 200 mph. The bike would hit 140 mph with the bikes weight about 700 pounds. (Guess subject to old memory) Always too busy with something else.

    NEVER do that, keep the power engaged but steady, dropping revs loses valuable momentum.

      This was reallgly Stiggy! So you say, at the end of braking, it is good to get on the accelerator a bit? I am talking about 9HP indoor karts...rofl. Will it help to accelerate faster out of a corner? Because, you know, mostly at the mid section or exit of the corner I am countersteering, sometimes only at the neutral wheel position. Tell me how to be faster? I have one not so great quality vid of 9HP kart.

      +Nechrocasm If you think that's crazy a properly set up 250cc superkart can reach 140mph/225kmh, check out some of henrik lilja's videos. Making contact with another kart is a pretty bad idea, often results in broken ribs and the ruining of many expensive parts. Race karts are like little tiny formula cars that you can stuff in the back of a pickup truck.

    One of those guys who won't take his position in the formation lap, hanging back and jamming up the guys behind because he wants to get a jump on the guy ahead. It's called a formation lap for a reason. But anyway, fasten your transponder down next time. Flat off the corners (DOWNSHIFT!) and couldn't stay with the leaders. Flat above 100 without a draft. Wrong gear and probably wrong jetting. Lots of lifting. Commit yourself!

    youre hardly using the track and the kart to its full potential. more kerbs, approach, apex, and exit.
    less idle time with control input. you must be either breaking, accelerating, or carefully getting the kart through the mid corner using a combination of them, not coasting, wasting shitloads of time.
    youre maybe working at 65-70% of what that kart is capable of.

    • @ZizinRacing
      @ZizinRacing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +skittlepower95 No, this is on-pace with the fastest times. Road racing is a little weird, not like the sprint track. You're faster if you stick in a pack of 2-3 karts and use the draft to go faster on the straights, however you are also faster if you go off line just a tad in the corners when you're in the pack. The front spoiler on a kart actually provides a small amount of downforce and it makes a difference, if everyone drove exactly the same line and you stuck right behind them through the corner your front end washes out a bit.
      Another issue with this track in particular is the surface right near some of the apexes is a bit beat up and rough, it upsets the kart if you drive over it so it's faster if you miss that rough patch.
