- 2021 Quincy GP 125 Shifter Final. Devon Smith-Harden takes win #2 of the weekend...even after biffing the start and touching the curb after the jump.
He set the track record on lap #7. Unfortunately, Race Liberante had even more trouble after a great start.
Part 2 of 2 • Quincy GP 2021 125 Shi...
I owned my 125 shifter precisely long enough to realize I would never be able to keep a driver like this in sight. If you've never driven one, find a place to rent one with instruction for a couple of days. Then come back and watch this video again. Fantastic drive!
What the top speed of a 125 shifter? Seems at least 70 mph is my guess
@@leonardread13 The lowest final gear I had in my kit topped out at about 85mph. It got there in the time it took me to move the shift lever 5 times and slowed down even faster.
We ran a 6/10 mile sprint track mostly and saw 80-81 on our fast straight with way more left to go if you geared it taller.
@@leonardread13 We were doing around 100mph here
i qualified 4 th at quincy in 94 but blew the engine in the race Alex Barron won and went to indy car for dan gurney
As I sit on my couch watching this I find myself leaning into the turns. What a great ride!
I'm doing the same, brilliant
you want to lean out of turns to keep the weight on the outside tires.
After he got around #484 he began to fold time and space.... What a ride lad!!! The sickest ride along of all time.... congratulations my friend and thanks for posting!!
The amount of traction those karts produce at speed is amazing
Have to wear a kidney brace, or you just crack ribs going around corners. So ya, they grip.
Was wondering if they have aero on them?
@@buggerlugz6753 The 250 Superkarts do but not these.
@@fredpinczuk7352 I used to race with an IAME Praga 125cc, i almost never wore a brace but i paid for it the rest of the week, i couldn't sleep on my side for 3-4 days :(
@@ikonds6826 direct drive? I would say those would hurt more your ribs than the shifter, because you have to slide it to keep up the speed. My dad built IAME Sudam 125 and Parilla 125cc and 125cc shifter for Argentina Karting championships
I've been rallying for years with some close calls. This is on another level, kudos to you and anyone who races one of these widow makers👏

raced dirt track stock cars , trucks at 25 years of age , this video popped up , now at 55 years you gave me leg cramps and white knuckles lol, VERY NICE JOB !!!!
The rhythm they set was brutal and precise. Magnificent!
Those were some epic banzai quali laps once you got past the slower guy after the mediocre start. Really impressive. I used to proper race 125 shifters but none of our tracks had trees or walls like that to contend with. I’m 58 now, nowhere near that level of commitment anymore…but boy I wish I’d been able to race a course like that 20 years ago. Just brilliant. Thanks for posting.
That track is nuts with all them trees, curbs and stone walls, but I would have loved it in my 20’s.
nah. it's soooo narrow it's a joke imo
The organizers got it all! Trees, curbs, people, everything! Congrats! (for a while, I missed the 90’s…).
@@raymondo162 Maybe because you would be afraid... Instead of being mad at the design of the Circuit, or really (yourself) why don't you just admit that it scares you. 🤷♂️🤦♂️

Well, they wear helmets so……
Thanks so much for posting this!! I raced at Quincy in 79 and 80. Such a great track and quite the event.
Man looks so fun, I get a crazy adrenaline rush watching this lol, looks like so much fun.
This has to be one of the most beautiful and technically challenging kart track I have ever seen! Wish I could have driven it with my old shifter and skills! Thanks for sharing this
Love the flow of that layout, would be mad fun to drive, definitely makes you fully commit on the passes. 😎
I grew up going to this race. Was surprised to see the walls built and the fence. We used to watch rookies loose it on the horse shoe turn and driver’s pulling there carts up out of the creek. Things look much safer now. Still a great track. Thanks
Where is this race held at? Beautiful course!
@@jimmymac63 this year June 11th and twelfth in Quincy Illinois. The park is called South Park.
This is safer? Wow.
Damn
OMG, seriously fast, and some serious bumps... Section just before start/finish, and just after is nutz.... Great view, appreciate the post.
Damn! I fell out of my recliner twice watching this! Thanks for sharing.
I just stumbled across this video and wondered if this was at Quincy Il. I was born, 1948, and raised in Quincy. The track immediately reminded me of South Park where we always had the Easter egg hunt. It looks the same and is the most beautiful park I ever visited. Great memory. Jim Newberry.
Yes it's Quincy Illinois..they just had the 22 race last weekend
Damn, nice drive. I always wanted to try a shifter. The feeling of competing in regular rental go-karts was already amazing, this must be pure adrenaline.
Very cool, I like your pass, very clean and decisive. I raced 125 shifter karts in the US in the late 1990's. Lots of fun. In the early 1980's I raced 100cc enduro karts. Lots of fun also, but nothing like a shifter kart.
Props to whatever method of stabilization you are using for your footage. Unbelievably smooth. Go compare this to an F1 onboard camera shot if you don't think so.
GoPro Hero 7 Black...stock stabilization
Caught myself holding my breath just from watching. That's some intense stuff right there. That guy driving probably has a big collection of trophies by the way he handles that track.
This was magnificent to watch. Thank you.
Still love the carts. Raced in Calif. in the early 70's, Margay chassis w/McCullough 101B engine (123 cc, 12.5 hp at 9000 rpm). In 1981 I began road racing superbikes in the AFM and AMA. Karts are a great place to start..
What speed are these things going at?
@@DonKopArkadio I'd guess around 60 -70 mph
He hit 92mph on the back straight.
@@OrigZ585756 I went back and looked, they are indeed carrying a lot of speed thru there.. love it. Thanks
I couldn't stop watching once you started racing. It looks video is running at 2X or 4X but I know it's not. Incredible stuff. I have to go check out more of this action.
I checked the speed vs fps, and it seems legit, but that's not a real science, more of a feel. I do, however feel like he crashed into that wall at the end....Karts feel, and look twice as fast due to how low they are, it's not unreasonable to think they sped it up. In reality they're only doing 45-70mph, but at that weight, and 1 inch off the road, it feels, and looks like 120mph!
@@WE.R.NOT.OK.W.U.TRMP_GTFO That ‘dog’s eye-view’ really Amos up the speed. Now imagine what it must be like for a dog running through the woods…
His Mychron showed 96 mph on the back straight
@@OrigZ585756 I didn’t notice that. Holy cats, that’s bonkers out of these 125s. Running them hard for sure.
dude this is insaneeeee makes me want to race karts so bad, they are friggin flying!
when you were behind the 2nd placed guy, he was holding you up, once you passed him, man been a while since I saw someone pushing limits. Good stuff!
That looks soooo fun! Would it be against the rules to put electronic paddle shifters on that thing so you can keep both hands on the wheel and shift faster? Technically I think it would be very easy, but I haven't seen a cart with it yet so I'm guessing it's against the rules?
There's a system out there...but testing showed it to not be any faster....and it's not 'legal' in any series we run plus it's crazy expensive.
2:18 Constant repetitive revving - why?
The keep the engine from loading up...they're 2 cycle engines and just idling causes them to over fuel .
That chassis is getting a work out. Miss my 125 Shifter.
Great race.
I use to race icc back in the day. TM birel chassis. Ever been to the supernats?
Been there about every year since 2008....just got home from there.
@@OrigZ585756 awesome man. Remember years back when Schumacher was driving tony kart at supernats? I got his autograph at that race
@@indafastlanz2520 We were there too! Really cool to watch his interaction with the other racers.
Where is this?? Looks frikin rad. Nice steering dude!
South Park in Quincy, ILL. Google Quincy Grand Prix.
Love that track. Reminds me of the gymkhana videos of cars blasting thru the mountains and forests. What a ride.
Did this back when I was in my middle 50s. Lots of fun. My grandson wants to follow in my footsteps so I am building him a shifter, then a qtr midget, then a formula Ford. My sons all drove go karts which honed their skills for driving full sized cars in all weather conditions and my grandson is getting pretty good at drifting which is a critical skill in racing. It will be up to him if he wants to pursue to more challenging forms. Just want him to have the equipment should he choose to do it.
Seems like soft tires would be completely worn before the end of the race. Did you guys use softs?
Actually, the tire wear wasn't too bad at all...but yes, we us a MG yellow tire.
How’d they allow racing with a stone wall beside the track? Crazy
They're only exposed on the inside of turns, where momentum would push you away from them. The hardest thing about this course is the crown in hte center of the road. It's more than normal.
@@OrigZ585756 it looks really cool have to say
@@ThomasFleming1 yeah it does
allow me to suggest that you watch some isle of man tt motorcycle races. or some of the irish road races. yeh
What a track. I definitely wouldn't want to make a big mistake. Wish I was still young enough to run on something like it. I miss my karting days,it was a great way to start racing. I'm fifty now and thinking about getting into an oldies league.
Hey Terry! I just turned 59 and have always loved karts- ever since my pops bought me a garage sale special when I was a kid. Didn’t have it long, as we didn’t have much mechanical skills. Then about 3 years ago I got to race a few rounds with some buddies in Singapore (not shifters). Thinking I’d like to join you in an oldies league! 😄
@@lonesquid mate, if you ever get to Australia, I'd be happy to race against you.
What is the life expectancy of the gear box ? Like 3-5 races max?
Gearbox, probably twice that. Piston / rings need much more attention.
You guys are absolutely crazy to race there….. geez!!
how does a kart get round corners with a solid rear axle?
does the inside wheel spin the tyre in place of a diff or what?
it baffles me.
On bigger sweeping corners a kart slips the inside wheel. On tight corners a good handling kart lifts the inside wheel.
@@OrigZ585756 Hi thanks for that. I've never driven one so I couldn't figure it out.
This brings some good memories :) Did you spin out at the last second?
No, there's a part 2 due to the GoPro splitting the video.
Hello everyone, so what are the speeds these karts travel at? What is the top speed he is traveling at on this particular race course?
He hit 96 mph on the back stretch and over 90 mph on a couple of other straights
Is ths an PC Game ?
Real life indeed.
question: why do you do the back and forth driving in certain parts?
Before the start, it's simply to keep the tires warm and clean. During the race, this street has a huge crown to it and you have to be deliberate when you cross it....or it'll put you in the wall /curb.
Impressive how he kept pushing it right to the edge, long after passing all his competition. I couldn’t. Some people are just wired differently !
That's for sure the demeanor of a real driver. They don't go out and do it for the kudos or pats on the back. They live for that feeling. And the best racers out there will agree your not racing the other cars your racing the track.
Truly amazing racing here ! The track is sick, the angle is great and the driving is right in the edge. The very end had me worried though. Looks like it cuts just as the Kart was losing it. Anyway , great video for sure!
Watch Part 2 to see him recover from grazing the curb and going on to win. The GoPro split the video at the exact moment of impact....and I didn't want to edit it in any way.
Bateu no final da corrida???? Perdeu completamente o controle?
Watch Part 2 for the finish...he barely grazed the curb.
I wanna see a trackside view of this
My obliques hurt after leaning into the turns while watching the POV vid. Exciting as hell!
Y el choque no lo muestra?
Debió ser fuerte
I will start mi first national in the category of KZ any advices?
Gearing and carb jetting are real important.
This is the first time I've seen shifter karts with the engine on the left side - is there some reason for that?
?? Just the radiator on the left.
@@OrigZ585756 Sorry about that, operator error. The engines are so low I can barely see them. BTW, nice track, and nice racing. I had a shifter years ago, but I wasn't in good enough shape to withstand the forces.
How fast is the average speed you maintain? Jw, Looks fun!
An average speed on this course would vary wildly, numerous times. The hairpin at the bottom of the hill would see speeds as low as around 30 mph....to a high of over 92 mph on the long straights.
Ohh gosh.. that last few seconds f the video 😬😬. Did you save it?
Unfortunately the GoPro split the video at the exact moment he grazed the curb. Watch Part 2, he corrected and went on to win.
Damn that’s awesome. What’s the top speed on one of these? Love the camera placement 🤙
On this track, he hit 96 mph. Top end probably around 110 on a big track.
A question, on the race starts do you release the clutch all of a sudden or slowly?
Yes
Really shows the speed.
Good Lord how fast are those carts?
He set a track record of just over 96 mph on hte back straights. On other tracks, shifters can hit over 100 mph.
What happened at the end. Did he eat it? I think he did when he crossed the road.
Unfortunately, the GoPro split the video at the exact moment he grazed the curb. In Part 2, he corrects and goes on to an easy win.
Great video! Good choice of camera location. That track is so narrow - sort of like F1 at Monaco. Really hard to pass. Great driving! It looks like the car is oversteering more as the race progresses? Tire wear?
I have this feeling that I could bump the kart anytime and feel sleepy at the same time. I'm no driver but I really felt the ride watching this video. 😁
Insane
