It wasn't a crazy bad smoking, but by far the most interesting smoking story I recall is about a smoking we got in AIT, after we got back from the chow hall in early August 1990 A Co, 86th Ord. Bn, Ft. Knox, KY.
At chow, someone read a paper headline or had a phone call or overheard something or whatever, and we learned that Iraq had invaded Kuwait and Operation Desert Shield had kicked off. We all figured "well that's it, we're going to war." Over the course of the hour or so after chow, there's tons of crazy rumors flying around - stuff about everybody's orders getting ripped up, Reserve and National Guard soldiers contracts being changed to active duty, all kinds of crazy stuff. We all think we're going to the desert, and we're leaving pretty much tomorrow. So there's this weird half-joking, nervous OMG vibe going on, and everyone's just generally kind of excited.
Apparently, without anyone saying so out loud, we each individually must have all had this "Oh man I guess we REALLY ought to get our sh*t together now!" vibe going on. So when somehow a fire alarm went off (still don't know what that was all about), we all INSTANTLY dropped WHATEVER we were doing, and got down into formation FAST. Like IMPRESSIVELY FAST. Like UNBELIEVABLY FAST. We'd NEVER moved that fast to get in formation before. Never before, and never since. In my head it all took about maybe 6 seconds to get from the second floor to downstairs standing in formation. We figured this is it, here we go. Deploying right now off to war. (Note: Turns out it doesn't remotely work like that, but a bunch of dumb privates hopped up on adrenaline are like moths to the flame for a good juicy rumor).
So one of the Drill Sergeants wanders out and he's clearly surprised -- we're ALL already there - early, no stragglers, no talking, absolutely _perfect_ everything snap-snap-snap. He just starts chuckling for a moment, then he stops and gets pissed and starts chewing us out -- "Now why the f*** couldn't you privates get in formation like this EVERY time? You been holding back on me all this time? HALF RIGHT, FACE!"...

One morning before inspection, my fireteam partner had used foot powder and some had gotten on my bag. While we were later getting our bunks torn apart, my DI saw a few small specks of white that I had somehow missed and threw my bag into the middle of the room, screaming "WHAT IS THIS?! AN EPISODE OF NARCOS?!" There's plenty more, but this is my favourite.

Dude, you did everything right. The 1am smoking was planned. The DI's were just getting together to figure out how to pin everything on you, dispensing the prescribed lesson to the class. This is a test to see how your peers regard you as well as dealing with adversity in the most unexpected times.

chris L absolutely agree with you. I never once saw any units get smoked after lights out in BCT, or AIT. I did however see a MSG I was working brigade staff duty with catch a SSG on battalion staff duty sleeping. He was a pretty chill MSG just waiting on retirement papers to process, and had spent most of his time in the Guard. He cussed the hell out of that SSG for that though.

Matt, I think I’ve watched this video like 5-times and couldn’t stop laughing at your story! So much so, I couldn’t resist your invitation to write about our platoon smoking that also occurred on fireguard duty, but luckily not because of me, but the smoking of ages nonetheless! I will apologize in advance for the length of this story, but I am SURE anybody going in or has been in, will find it funny!
So there we were, week 3 of Basic and everyone is still in that shell-shock mode and the night starts off like every other night. Lights out at 9pm and just another end to another long day. So it’s 12-something PM, and in comes our Senior Drill Sergeant and a Second Lieutenant.
No big deal, royalty in the house, it happens and this should have been routine in and out by the pair; it’s week 3 where the cadre ease off a tad, as gas chamber is later on that week. But no; out of all the guard pairs in the world on duty that night, we have our two most star-struck / rank-struck platoon mates on fireguard! Terrible timing couldn’t begin to describe this disaster in slow motion unfolding and because my bunk was closest to the entrance and fireguard desk, I saw this drama go from bad to way past FUBAR. Both guys just froze in terror as they didn’t know if to salute or go to parade rest. So Senior Drill Sergeant just bore into them with “you gonna say something or do I have to do the talking, Private?”
So one of the poor kids, who is now ghost white with terror, freaks out and as a knee jerk reaction, yells “AT EASE” at the top of his lungs and then snaps into a salute with his right hand and goes feet apart and left hand to his back in this sort of hybrid position of attention / parade rest thing!! Just as fast, everyone bolts out of their bunks and we are all now towing the line! By this time, the other guy on guard duty snaps into the same weird salute rest and Sr. Drill Sergeant is just floored at what he is seeing so he turns what should have been funny, into the Army’s version of judgment day!
He now just flat out loses it on this kid “What the F**k is wrong with you two morons?!? Are you guys retarded or something?!?” Of course, they were too terrified to answer, so that further pissed of Sr. Drill who now turned to us and said. “Well, now that we got everybody’s up this fine morning, let’s start it off right with a little motivational PT”. “Half right face…front leaning rest position, Move. In cadence…exercise”.
And boy did we exercise!! The poor fireguard guys watched in sheer panic as we pushed earth and feeling they needed to join us, they started going down to push with us but as anybody who has been through Basic can attest, once you spill milk, there’s no getting it back in the glass, so Sr. Drill Sergeant just burrows into them with “I didn’t tell you two numb-nuts to push; get back at that position of whatever the f**k it was you were doing. I want to remember you two just the way you were”. It’s a funny line now especially since Sr. Drill had zero sense of humor, but I can still see these poor guys petrified faces as they had to watch us get smoked for a better part of an hour while at the position of that salute rest which is the best way to describe it!!
Man, what a night; that smoking was way past epic! The LT didn’t know where the other light switch was, they turned on half the bay lights, so we got smoked in the dark mostly which gave it that eerie feel, but I still remember that vicious chorus of smoking lines that only Drill Sergeants can deliver: “1, 2, 3, 4 You’re not sounding off, Don’t cheat your body, stay with me…….”
Of course after a few minutes, you’re in complete muscle failure and can barely talk, so your voice while sounding off falters, which by the way and so that you new guys going know, after you recover, or go to your feet after a smoking, you utter one of two lines: “Drill Sergeant, thank you for conditioning my mind, body and soul. Please feel free so to do so at any time” OR, “More PT, Drill Sergeant, More PT, I love it, I need it, I want some more of it, Drill Sergeant, PT”.
Obviously we weren’t being loud or fast enough with our movements, so it got worse. By now, the Lieutenant was getting into the action and yelling. “Why are we moving at civilian speed? This is the Army and we only have one speed here and it’s called Hooah speed!” Yes, up to that point, I am sure I had experienced worse days in my life, but at that point, I couldn’t remember any.
That night was full of many firsts for us, as we experimented with such new facing movements like “about face, and sprinkled in some half-left faces for good measure, and a new rear left face, which doesn’t exist, so we got dropped for following an improper command. I don’t exactly remember when the nightmare ended, but next thing I remember, it’s 0430 and our drill sergeant walks in to the bay with his cheery self and his thoughtful and kind “words” to get us going that morning.
All of us looked at each other weirdly as we were still soaked in sweat from the midnight smoking but because we were so exhausted, we couldn’t recall the smoking really happened. And as we brushed our teeth and got ready for PT / first formation, we began to brush it off as some collective dream, even though it escapes me how it is possible to have a collective dream like that with another 50 people. Anyhow, we walk downstairs and there are our two drill sergeants talking to Sr. Drill Sergeant and that Lieutenant from the night. We couldn’t hear what was being said, but all the sudden, the words re-occurring nightmare came to mind.
We knew were screwed and after hearing the tone of the DS’ command to “FALL IN”, we knew it was simply part 2 of last night. Good news was that we were doing muscle PT that morning anyways, so besides not stretching, getting smoked kind of felt normal. In fact, we got smoked for so long, we almost didn’t make it to the chow hall on time and you can guess who the DS’ blamed that on??
Anyhow, it’s like Matt Ward said, the smallest snowflake will turn into an avalanche and hell hath no fury like a furious Drill Sergeant. Well, maybe he didn’t say that, but I’m sure he would agree. I certainly don’t want to scare you guys and gals going in, but as any prior service guy can attest, a smoking like this is IMPOSSIBLE to avoid and IT WILL HAPPEN just as sure as the sun rises.
Just ensure you learn from it and that’s really all you can do. And Matt, keep them stories coming, Brother! I swear if your story didn’t soak my eyes with the blissful memories of that fine May 2000 morning (yes, it’s been a while since I was in). It is great to hear the Army hasn’t changed in regards to a good’ol fashioned smoking and thank you for inviting us to join in with our experiences. What a nostalgic drive through memory lane that was; thanks again!

Neff Sid - Thank you for the kind words and good luck in your military journey! Smoking like this will happen and as hard as it is to believe, this will make for great bonding experiences with your new platoon mates as all of you are in a Basic together. You won’t laugh then or maybe even for a couple of months after Basic, but those type of events is what will shape & strengthen you as a Private as your journey starts in the military, so stay strong, don’t despair when a smoking like I or Matt described happens and push through it. I remember getting smoked the second to last night at BCT. The most hyper, annoying private from the other platoon in the bay wanted to be a snitch during the first fire guard shift because ONE private wouldn't go to sleep right away (which is funny, since he was the one who usually kept people up all night). Bay leader agreed with him. Entire bay tried to stop them from telling the drill sergeants on duty that night so we could get our sleep. Didn't work.
Keep in mind, this was a night where we - miraculously - got an extra hour of sleep. We could have been refreshed and energized for Family Day. We were wrong.
Snitches go downstairs. Drill sergeant tells them to get everyone in the bay downstairs. We're all on the drill pad. Two and a half straight hours of changing from PT's to OCP's with push-ups, sit-ups, v-ups, and mountain climbers. I already packed most of my shit, so I was sweating bullets in the OCP's I saved for Family Day. First time I looked at my watch it was roughly 2030. Didn't get back to the bay until at least 2230.
Thank you drill sergeants from A Co 3/34 you were the best.

Never had such a bad experience tho although we did get smoke the afternoon of first Grad Rehearsal. DS walked in from the usual door, walked all the way through the bay and out the other door and NO ONE called At Ease. I personally didn't see him but after our 1hr long smoke session ppl said they saw him and said nothing. I was thinking to myself "why would you not say anything? they even said they made Eye contact!!" but most of us really didn't see him. DS Oldham is the type that literally won't be seen unless he wants you to see him #thatinfantrytraining. Even the other DSs said they can't find him sometimes.

Well, there was this one time I got my platoon smoked fro an hour. I remember it was torewards the beginning of white phase. We had gotten our rifles zeroed at the range a couple of days ago and we were doing some basic weapons maintenance. When I went to basic, all our rifles had CCOs on them, or red dot sights. I took mine off my rifle to try and cleans the spots under it. I didn't think of anything at the time and no one had called me out on it. The Drill Sergeant walks in and at that moment, he starts talking about something, I don;t remember what exactly, but I remember him talking about how if we remove d our sights, it would mess up our zeroes.....Yeah, and he was literally standing next to my rifle and eyeing as he spoke. It was that day that our new Senior Drill Sergeant who had just arrived at the beginning of White Phase, it was that day he learned my name. It's not as bad as it sounded, but I did end up being the butt of a few jokes from them ever since.

I wasn't really in Army training... but I did got a platoon in trouble. I was 15 then and I was visiting my uncle at Columbus, Georgia... where Fort Benning is at.
My uncle let me go into the base when I was visiting. He let me tried the obstacle course just after a platoon was finished. I didn't had any proper clothes on... I had a t-shirt, shorts, and sandals on... they told me sandals would be a problem so took them off and went through bare feet. The Drill Sergeants rated me a B performance ... but later I found out the platoon didn't do very good with the obstacle course so they got smoked.
The drill sergeant was like... "how come a punk barefoot kid do better than many of you..." to the platoon. I think they were suppose to be done. I was heading back to the car and when I got inside and look back at the obstacle course... the next thing I remember when we were starting to drive away... the platoon were starting to take their boots off... my thought was... are they going though the obstacle course barefoot? What have I done?
To their defense... I didn't go through the entire obstacle course... just the ones that is low to the ground or easy to go through.

You didn't do anything wrong. The Drill's saw leadership potential in you. You were part of the Training Schedule. They put you and your battle buddy on CQ on that date for a reason. They were training you to be a leader. Because, as a leader if you "f" up just once, as a leader, you can get many Soldiers killed! You only got to see your Soldiers in the front leaning position. Better to see them in that position than trying to identify their remains. Dead on a battle field. To me that was great training. Always take care of your men that you were assigned to lead. I wrote a stupid joke I saw at reception on one of my notebooks. A Drill Sgt read it and got pissed at me, smoked all of us for over an hour, made us go up and down a killer hill at Ft Jackson, we all called it Drag-Ass Hill, in full battle rattle. It was a bad smoking, but it was also kinda fun

One of the bad incidents I recall was having our rights read to us during field week after someone was dragged out of a tent and beaten. It was around 0200 or 0300 and we all got woken up and had to stand in formation while the drills threatened to give the entire platoon UCMJ punishment. The guys that did it eventually stepped forward after we stood there at attention for almost an hour, in the freezing cold with nothing on but our under clothes since they didn't give us time to dress.

When I was at 11b basic my SDS was an E-7 Fort Benning Sniper Instructor turned DS but he also had to leave for a week once to do some sniper training. I knew this for sure because he brought his Barrett out to the range one day to show us. Anyway this dude was NO JOKE 5'4" Hispanic and ANGRY AS FUCK... one day we were at the day/night live shoot which involved hurry up and wait for MOST of the day. At one point while one of the platoons (not mine) was sitting in the bleachers waiting for their time to do one of the two events for the day (Bounding or Live Shoot) one kid passed out HARD on the bleachers in full battle rattle and was slumped on the TOP row with his head hanging backwards against the top bar and my SDS climbed the back of the bleachers and choked that kid till he passed out. He came back to and my SDS told his DS and he got SMOKED for sleeping. He then told the chaplain that he was assaulted by the SDS and that told my SDS he was under investigation and wasn't allowed to wear his DS cap. This made him soooooo mad that he started having our E-6 DS smoke us non-stop for basically no reason so that he could get his aggression out. So the next day we were in the barracks and we were told to clean the no-go zone on the floor and we had this one kid who used to be a janitor and he told us to let him do it alone so it would be perfect. Well our E-6 DS came in and saw that this PVT was working alone and called us all in to tow the line. I was taking a shit and I heard it and came RUNNUNG out and the SDS saw me and said something and I didn't hear him because I didnt expect him to address me. So for some dumbass reason I said, "I'm sorry DS?" As in I didn't hear you and he was like Oooooooooh so I'm a sorry DS huh? So he made me instruct the platoon on the different exercises they had to do while I stood there as he berated me for not listening. "Ok PVT what are they going to do now? No not half jacks... make them work! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! SCREAM IT! We literally won best platoon at every event and we never came out of red phase. Everything at basic is a psychological game. DO NOT expect to get your phone. Just call it a miracle if you make one call a month... I've got a ton more stories. Better ones tok

October 1989, Fort Knox, KY. Some dipshit in my platoon actually thought he could sneak a cigarette into the barracks. This genius then smokes it IN THE SHOWER ROOM. There was nowhere for the fumes to go and the room was filled with smoke. The entire barrack was outside doing push ups at 1 in the morning. The dummy who did it was known afterwards as "The Marlboro Man".

Our company once got smoked for four hours because someone stepped on a drill sgt's hat during mail call.
It was inside a hanger in August in 110 degree heat (outside) and the "floor" was bark chips. Ten people had to be taken to sick call due to heat exhaustion and one had a heat stroke. Most miserable I can ever remember being. Ever.

I always suspected, but after watching 3 videos, I am now fairly certain that those who can't deal with authority probably don't make it. Even when something seems extremely stupid or you make an innocent mistake, or get smoked for mistakes of others, I'm sure one or two just won't be able to deal with it. You have to go in with the attitude of no matter what you think, the DS is always right. If you get smoked for something and you weren't even there when the issue took place, it's hard to swallow punishment, but you keep your mouth shut and get smoked. They know who did what but it's a team and often the entire team pays for the mistakes of one or two.
Great explanations! These videos are going to help a lot of kids going in. In fact, because of these videos, there may come a time when DS's will have to make things up to smoke recruits for. LOL! "How do *all* these new boots know the soldiers creed on the first day?"...."PLATOON! HOW IS IT THAT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU KNOW THE SC ON THE FIRST DAY!"....."MATT WARD TOLD ME DS!" LOL!

It really wasn't unusual anyways. What probably happened was the 1st sergeant did a surprise inspection or something and the drill sergeant was embarrassed or caught doing something he wasn't supposed to, or maybe he makes sure the barracks are twice as clean when 1st sergeants come over, etc, there could be a lot of options. It isn't that unusual and it definitely doesn't matter after basic training.

My wife is at fort jackson right now, and sent a letter telling me that she had 5 minutes left on fire guard, then she suddenly heard water... the water pipe exploded, and began flooding the bay... she had to call her drill sergeants and whatever staff that deals with that issue... by time someone arrived who knew how to stop the water flow, everything was flooded so badly that everyone had to sleep in a hallway somewhere, they had dehumidifiers and fans going for 3 days to prevent mold, and had to sleep in their sleeping bags with no other blankets or pillows... I could just imagine the thoughts when you're on fire guard, and suddenly realize the place is flooding, then your drill sergeants have no clue how to stop it either lmao

I have two stories (kinda). I’m coming off a shoulder and back injury so I wasn’t allowed to do PT at drill. We were getting smoked (not sure why) and I walked over to the Sargent standing on the side and told him I wasn’t allowed to do it... he yelled at me and then smoked everyone else twice as long.
Again later in class I forgot one of the land nav features so again he smoked everyone and I had to just stand and watch.
It’s almost worse because I’m embarrassed, I feel like a dick, everyone else is pissed at me..

This isn't basic training, but it's a story I will not forget. During reception at Fort Sill Okhlahoma, a drill sergeant wanted us all to memorize the Soldier's Creed. Later on after an hour, he comes back and picks thirty random people to go on this stage in front of 500 people and other drill sergeants to sound off and say the Soldier's Creed. The ones who were stood up front knew it well and said it right, but the ones who were standing in the back were just lip syncing. So he tells one soldier who's hiding to come up to the center of the stage alone and starts going off on him. The person on stage says that he does know it to the drill sergeant and so the drill sergeant tells him to say it. He didn't even get to the warrior's ethos. The drill sergeant smoked all of us and had the guy on stage watch us as we thanked him for failing us. We were then ordered by the drill sergeant to write the Soldier's Creed 100 times over and turn it in by 05:00.

We got smoked for an hour once because one girl took the Drill Sergeant's sarcastic words literally when the Drill Sergeant said this gem, 'Go ahead, Privates. Take all the time you want. I have all the time in the world.' This girl did just that. We did one push-up in that hour...the 300 count push-up. A rather impressive upgrade from the 8 count push-up she loved so much.

  • @JudgeMocha
    @JudgeMocha 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hold on, battle buddy. When I was in basic, we didn't have to leave our dog tags with the fire guard when we used the latrine, so this is a new one to me. Also, the worst we got smoked (and trust me, it's hard to pick just one) is when a soldier of ours snuck his cell phone with him and kept it on him for a while (we don't know how long he had it). Well, he got caught by one of the drill sergeants and he screamed for all of us to wake up. We went out into formation and got smoked for a good hour, until the next day when our senior drill sergeant got word of what happened. We had to low crawl with our heads in the dirt for a good 3 hours (I had a watch on me, so I can confirm it was a few hours) because strongly believed one of us knew about the cell phone. No one confessed, so our SDS took away our family day and made us watch the soldier with the cell phone sleep every night until graduation. That soldier got red-phase restarted, as well as any other soldier that knew about the phone, and our SDS decided to cut us some slack gave us our family day. There's a list of things that happened in BCT, and there's a couple incidents in AIT that were a bit worse (such as several soldiers sneaking alcohol into the barracks and giving us 2-weeks of hell), but that's a story I got for you tonight.

Regardless, our DS got a call from the chow hall asking where we were. DS was furious. The four of us got dressed and ran over to the chow hall. Meanwhile, the rest of our platoon got smoked in full chemical gear outside for like an hour. I think the drills just look for reasons to conduct a few of these late-night smokings during basic.

Thanksgiving day, the fire alarm goes off. Some guy in a different platoon decided that he should pull the fire alarm. He didn't tell anyone until after we had completed our punishment of sitting outside on metal bleachers watching first aid videos for about 8 hours. Turns out that there was an electrical problem and the alarm went off about five times that night until they turned it off.
There was one time toward the beginning that a DS smoked is because we didn't know something that or DSes hadn't taught us yet.

Believe it or not, that question has been asked before and the answer is, they will find something wrong 10 out of 9 times! Not the most logical math, but you get what I'm getting at.

This story is common practice in bootcamp. Your drill sergeant knew the first sergeant was coming in. In my navy bootcamp late at night an officer would go around and unannounced come in the barracks(ship) and do an inspection just so they could work us out for three hours.
My sister ship got caught with all kinds of contraband like cameras and cigarettes. For a straight week they would work them out from after dinner until 2am. Kids were being taken away in ambulances. We called it making it rain. Because the humidity would get so high that it would start to rain. But yeah every night an ambulance would show up outside of the ship.

It's not that it's strange or anything. It was more giving your DS the heads up a hire up is about to be there so he can see where everyone's at so he's squared away for the higher up.....

I remember one time during CQ that the person that was doing fire watch kept falling asleep and one night I was walking back to the barracks to get something and I smelled smoke come to find out someone was smoking in the barracks and even though it didn't set the fire alarm off the Drill Sergeant came by and SMOKED the whole platoon for that person not making the round and also falling asleep! As for you scenario that was planned and fortunately you didn't have to pay the price!

I actually missed a smoke session. I was hanging out in the laundry room waiting on my clothes to dry because some soldiers have no problem stealing your Brown thunders, socks, or whatever they're missing. After a while I noticed it was quiet in the barracks. I go out and notice everyone was gone. I scramble to find them. Come to find out they had been out in the pit getting dusted off pretty good for some time. But the time I found them, it was over. Not wanting to be a blue falcon, I told my DS. He told me I owed him. I don't think I ever paid that debt. 😅

t wasn't a crazy bad smoking, but by far the most interesting smoking story I recall is about a smoking we got in AIT, after we got back from the chow hall in early August 1990 A Co, 86th Ord. Bn, Ft.
So there's this weird half-joking, nervous OMG vibe going on, and everyone's just generally kind of excited............
So one of the Drill Sergeants wanders out and he's clearly surprised -- we're ALL already there - early, no stragglers, no talking, absolutely perfect everything snap-snap-snap. He just starts chuckling for a moment, then he stops and gets pissed and starts chewing us out -- "Now why the f*** couldn't you privates get in formation like this EVERY time? You been holding back on me all this time? HALF RIGHT, FACE!"...

What kind of trials do they make you do? Like I’ve heard of the Skyscraper and climbing that net thing and all. I just want to know what I’m getting myself into if I go into the National Guard.

I'm about to go in, hopefully. Luckily I have a group of guys that I lead workouts with, one of them have been through Ranger School so I started calling him Drill Sargeant and he started smoking me. Can't wait. It's going to be fun!

One private didn't shave and another forgot his belt at EST. We had to high crawl 100m back and forward in a sand pit in heat cat 5 for 2.5 hours while private 1 stood in the center saying,"Hurry Up! I'm Hot!" with private 2 next to him saying,"And my weapons clean!". Oh and we went to the actual range the next day. So many jammed weapons from dirty star chambers.

My battle buddy once got herself (and thereby me) in trouble and we had to stand there and watch our platoon get smoked for 20 mins (there was some rule at the time that after a few weeks you couldn't punish everyone for the actions of one individual so they got around it by punishing everyone except you and making them all hate you).

    • @sivonni

The longer explanation is that my battle buddy got her period early and couldn't find anyone to get her a pad because everyone was outside in formation and I couldn't leave her because she was my battle buddy and we basically just had to wait until someone came looking for us. We had to stand there for 20 minutes before the DS let us explain what happened and that's why it was so short, because we actually did what we were supposed to.

I was in basic trading for my career in the Army Reserves in 1997. I remember my platoon getting smoked because one of our recruits threw up on the drill sergeant after going through the gas chamber. Probably didn’t help we all laughed the entire time we were being smoked
