  • For our fifth make of Christmas I am bringing you a FREE pattern for the Charm Pack Table Runner.
I probably dozens of these for gifts for my family when I was a new quilter, and it is still one of my favorite ways to use a charm pack. They are so fast, and inexpensive to make that you can easily make one for all the seasons.
One charm pack and 1 1/2 yards of coordinating fabric will get you one large, or two small table runners, and the pattern includes instructions for both.
This project can easily be completed from start to finish in an afternoon, maybe a weekend if you are brand new. But we go over everything step-by-step and cover lots of great tips and tricks to get those points just perfect.
    Supplies we used:

I really love the tips and troubleshooting comments you make during the videos. Even though the video was (probably) aimed at beginners, I still learned a few good tips. Thanks for being a good educator, as well as, a great quilt shop.

Glad you liked it! I try to cover pinning in every video, but really went in depth here because it is such a beginner friendly project. I wanted everyone to have the tools for it to come out great!

I notice this particular line of fabric has directional prints. Note to self: check for direction of prints in the initial layout AND at each step of joining rows to make sure nothing gets turned upside down. I'm also in the habit of doing a pillow case backing (I believe that is what it is called) on these quick projects. Just lay out the batting, then the top and backing right sides together on top of the batting and sew all around the outside edge leaving about a 4" opening to accommodate turning the project right sides out. Flatten all around the edges, give it a good press, making sure to turn in the raw edges of the 4" gap, and then topstitch about 1/8" all around the outside edge which will secure that opening shut and give a nice flat finish to the edge of the project. Then QAD (quilt as desired) being careful to flatten everything to avoid pushing quilting lines against previous ones which may result in pleats and puckers.

    Priceless tip.... where to pin!

Loved the detailed tips. So helpful! Regarding where to measure a 1/4 inch with pinked seams - i heard that some manufacturers make the pinked edge so that the top of the hill is 5” and other manufacturers cut so 5” is the valley of the pinked edge. Question - I’ve noticed that if I iron my charm pack squares before sewing, they shrink more in one direction than the other. Do you try to align all your squares with the lengthwise grain in the same direction, or do you find if you don’t iron before sewing that the direction of the grain doesn’t matter?

I typically use charm packs for projects like this one where it doesn’t matter if they are a perfect 5-inch square to start with or when I am making triangles that will be squared up, so I don’t worry about start size.

When sewing squares together, I tend to chain piece. Saves thread and keeps all together…
