    Wow. Finally, a proper walkthrough of how to use the bloody Smart Bins. Best Resolve tutorial I've seen in a long time.

    I've always thought smart bins were too complicated and never got around to using them, but after this video, it's gonna take me 5 minutes to set up, and will probably save me hours of sifting through my footage.
    Thank you again my friend ❤️

    It's Smart Bins for Dummies! The number of times I've had to riffle through hard drives to track down a sound clip or something used in a previous project. This is the perfect solution. Thanks for your most excellent tutorial.

    I'm fairly new to Resolve and am a little impressed with myself that one of the first things I (accidentally) learnt about and have been using is the 'smart bins'. Boy, does it make editing and clip organisation feel buttery smooth

    Smart bins makes your life easier.
    I used to do data management on set a lot, I had a folder structure that I had built over the years where there was a folder for pretty much everything pre created.
    I had the main folder with the project name, inside it a folder for the Audio and one for Video.
    Inside the video folder I had a folder for every camera used, if we used the same camera model more than once we named them. Inside it a dated folder for each day of shooting, inside each dated folder I had a numbered folder for each time we dumped a card with the identification of the specific memory card used. Other than the folders for the cameras I had a folder for anything we might need like assets or stills.
    Inside the Audio folder I had a simpler structure, just a dated folder for each day of shooting with the dumped audio card in it, there was a folder for on set sounds that we recorded (room tones, steps, doors and so on), ADR, Music, Assets.
    There were folders for everything. A few times editors asked for me specifically because they knew my structured folders.
    When you wanted to bring the project in your editing software you just took the project folder and dropped it in the app and the folder structure would stay the same.
    At one time I started messing with Automator to add metadata like star ratings for clips based on the script notes, tablets were starting to be a thing so I worked a few days with a script to create a sheet with drop down menus in excel so the script would just have to select infos instead of writing everything with the terrible tablet keyboard, that could be referenced by Automator to fill in some infos (shot types, actors in the shot, star rating for how terrible the actors were, etc).
    Unfortunately contracts started to get scarce so I stopped doing data management on sets.

    Alex! I just got myself into video editing (started 3 months ago) and you're one of the content creators who influenced me into drinking the Resolve Kool-aid. It was the right choice - saying this not only because I'm loving DaVinci Resolve but because of your tips and tricks which makes it effortless when I'm working on my content.
    Disclaimer: My content still needs improvement - Alex has nothing to do with it. Once they're better, then it was influenced by the stuff I learned from this channel.

    What would be even cooler is if instead of having to create a new smart bin for each category or type, it could be done all in one place where you program all the rules for all clip types you may have and then let Davinci automatically create the smart bins for you. Plus, if it had that ability, you could define rules for media that you plan to make in the future and when you add it to your media pool it would "see" the new media you added and create new smart bins. Oh well, I can dream, can't I? ;)

    yeah!

  • @brenthearn4161
    @brenthearn4161 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can now do this in 18 by right clicking the folder in the media storage tab and selecting "Add folder in sub folders to media pool". It won't be smart bins but it will immediately categorize based off of your original file structure. TBH this tutorial is good but I think you should mention the fact that all your media has been pre-titled to match (AAA Cam/BBB Cam) This could be misleading to anyone that tries to re-link footage from a backup that hasn't been renamed.

    So smart bins are great but you have to add the files to your media pool. How do you organize your files on the hard drive? I now have files that I want to use in different projects but the way I created the sub folders were under a previous project folder name and now I want some of the other previous files in a new project. Do you have a good way for storing using previous video files?

    I definitely am going to start using Smart Bins.
    May I ask you about your Graphic Card such as what is it and what's it like with 4k projects?
    I have an RTX 3070 card and have come to the conclusion that its not capable of 4k renders with NR and Sharpness. I either keep crashing or getting GPU memory full error messages.
    Not happy as it was really hard to find this card and now all cards are stupidly expensive. 😭😢

    • @MrAlexTech
      @MrAlexTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use both! So I would use the regular Bins more for subjects/sequences so things like "Intro" "Scene1" "TutorialSection". Things that can't be seperated via SmartBins.
      And then use SmartBins for the different file formats, types, resolutions etc.

    this is great but imagine you have tons of video clips and you need to sort per scene/shot and you need custom names for folders, having them all in a single video folder makes it hard later putting them together in the timeline in the correct order you wanted to, i find it easier having more folders with custom names and fever clips in them than having them sorted in a giant video folder
