I would go against the "non-human" critique of Lilith. Witches are treated as the exact same as humans with a couple oddities here and there. Narratively, she is as much a human as the protagonist, just a "human" that is able to naturally do magic. It is more akin to a different ethnic group than a different species. Same as talking about kryptonians; Superman is meant to be seen as just as much human as anyone else, the only ones who focus on him being an alien are the villains. A kryptonian being gay, bi, or anything else isn't because they are non-human, but because their experience is supposed to be like the human experience. If anything, kryptonians are even more human than humans. I still have my critiques, since she is only told to be asexual by her voice actor and that asexuality isn't explored in any meaningful way, just thrown in there as the equivalent to a head-canon, but I don't think the critique of "non-human" works in this instance.
True the “non-human” critique doesn’t work when the character in question is near identical to a human and that’s not even going into the fact the series confirms the two species are biologically compatible
There is a mention of Alastor being ace in the actual show Rosie makes a comment jokingly saying Charlie is much too young to be dating Alastor and then says she knows he’s an ace in the hole, which Alastor is very confused by I like how this implies Alastor himself doesn’t know he’s Ace because he’s from a time period where any LGBTQIA+ person would be mocked and looked down upon, if Viv was more willing to do character building episodes, a cute one could be Alastor realizing he’s Ace, trying to hide it because he’d see it as a weakness, then the hotel crew finds out and they’re all supportive of him Which makes me kinda annoyed with how much people ship Alastor with other characters in the Hazbin fandom, I get it’s all good fun and Vivzie herself said it was fine, but I dunno, Alastor is one of the most popular Ace cartoon characters so to have that aspect of him stripped in so many fan works rubs me the wrong way I’m not part of the LGBTQIA+ community myself (I’m straight and would gladly have Ceroba Ketsukane from Undertale Yellow step on me) but I do supports making others feel comfortable in their own skin and loving who they love, and I’d love to see more Ace representation in media So I’m just not a big fan of that aspect of Alastor being removed so many times over for fan works, then again that’s just me
Alastor shipping makes me want to drive my head through a wall. Asexuality is a spectrum and some ace people do have sex, and some aro people do have romantic relationships, which is how some shippers justify it, but it’s heavily implied that he’s not that kind of ace, and Viv has said she doesn’t want to specify what kind of ace because she doesn’t want to get in the way of shipping which is a little :/
Hi, asexual person here. Obviously, I can't speak for every asexual out there, but for me, Alastor being shipped with other characters is completely fine. Do I ship him with anyone? Eh, not really. I think Radioapple is cute, and I like One-sided Radiostatic, but other than that I don't really ship him with anyone. To me, it's important to show asexual people in romantic relationships, since asexuality is a spectrum and asexual people can date if they want to (like me). As long as shippers don't completely erase Alastor's asexuality when shipping him, I think anyone can interpret him in any way they want. Being asexual doesn't mean not being involved in relationships, which I think a lot of people forget about when talking about asexual characters, saying that 'them being in a relationship erases their asexuality', which I disagree with, but I get why it's a concern, since it can be fumbled pretty easily.
I'm grayrose and I understand the frustration I think for me it comes more from knowing that many people blatantly disregard aromaticism and asexuality and their validity "Viv said it's okay" "asexuality/aromaticism is a spectrum" seem like excuses to disregard a valid identity because it gets in the way of your otp, rather than a genuine interest in bringing to attention and representing a diverse range of asexual/aromantic experiences It's a pain that many aroace people feel in real life every time they get told something like "you just have to find the right person" I feel like shippers need to expand their horizons to different kinds of relationships. I would absolutely love to see more queerplatonic or just platonic ships, but many fandoms seem to make shipping solely about romance and sex (even I'm no saint) Queerplatonic radioapple and radiosilence are my favorite Alastor ships and there is so much fun you can have with them without romance or sex involved, but people always seem to default to what they know and then make excuses I'm also disappointed in Viv not confirming what type of aroace he is for the sake of shipping I'm not saying anyone who makes and writes aro/ace character must specify, I tend to leave mine ambiguous, but the fact that she said she did it specifically to not get in the way of ships really rubs me the wrong way. It comes off a perpetuating the idea that a particular identity is an obstacle/inconvenience to an allo person's desire for a sexual and/or romantic in a relationship, rather than a something valid that deserves to be respected Honestly I feel the aro and ace communities should be more willing to be vocal and critical about something like this, because "I left it ambiguous so ace and/or aro people from all over the spectrums could see themselves in them" and "I left it ambiguous so their identity wouldn't get in the way of/discourage shipping" give off two completely different messages about how asexuality and aromanticism are viewed by the person who made the character, and it can enable broader ace/arophobia in the community surrounding their work
@@kangarooMonkee I totally understand that! People do the same thing with Luffy from one piece and while yes aro/ace people can do whatever they want I see NO attempt at working that part of his character into those ships and instead hand waving it away
I think that Lilith Clawthorn on The Owl House was fantastic, but it would have been nice to see a aromatic character and an asexual character on the show as well.
In the defense of Peridot and Lilith at least, both are "human-adjacent" rather than directly people. Edit- Matt and Gus find unverified. However, Benson from Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts i s a gay male character who is one of the main characters. Still, very important points addressed here- especially about how it seems almost avoidant whether anything's confirmed or not.
@@ThylineTheGay Exactly. This can apply to a lot of Owl House really- demons as "stand-ins" for humans, in terms of rep. Which is why Perry seems to be mixed in intent.
@@amesstarline5482 It would probably feel a little more genuine if some of the other agents did experience romantic feelings so the rep doesn't just get boiled down to "oh he won't date bc he's an animal and therefore not human lol". Still wouldn't be *perfect* but it would maybe be better
FYI, Alastor was mentioned to be ace in the show. As for him being aro, it was actually never confirmed, although it's a very popular headcanon/fanon (thus many people think he's confirmed aroace while he's only confirmed ace) EDIT: My bad. Alastor was confirmed to be aro in an official livestream.
It has been confirmed that he’s also aro. Through a livestream unfortunately but if you’re interested in looking it up it’s in a livestream on Vivziepops channel ‘Hazbin Hotel Live Q&A with cast’ at timestamp 6:20.
@@w98 Oh, thank you so much for letting me know. I hope it's going to be mentioned in the show, to me it gets very confusing when such important aspects of the show are only confirmed somewhere else like on livestreams.
Yea I get where the non human critique comes from, but when most if not the entire cast isn't human/they aren't the same race but they are shown to experience things like attraction pretty much the same as humans, it kinda falls flat There are gems that have romantic (and in Rose's case sexual) attraction, so I fail to see how one of them being ace suddenly means that the writers were creating a stereotype about non humans being ace Like if I write a story that centers around anthropomorphic cryptids and I want to make an ace character, am I supposed to shove in a random human for it in even though my main cast are pretty much cognitively the same as humans to avoid the stereotype? It would be a valid critique if the ace character was the ONLY non human in the cast, but when the entire cast isn't there's no point to it like "no shit Sherlock, nobody is human"
if anyone wants to see good ace rep i highly recommend a game called "in stars and time" it has 2 (or more wink wink) asexual characters, one is aroace and the other is asexual, it's represented very well (honestly surprised by how well it's written) and it's a great game overall
I think this was a great topic to cover after some of the miscommunications people had when watching your lady krillers video surrounding something you said with perry's asexuality your videos are great, and you're a really nice person, i really hope you keep uploading more :3
I actually meant to leave a comment under your Lady Krillers video about this but forgot until now: I don’t think Dan meant to pander to the LGBTQ+ community with that reply. I don’t think he even meant it seriously. Rather, I interpreted it as his way of lightheartedly telling people to stop sexualizing Perry. I am saying this as someone who’s ace-spec but has also seen how people unfamiliar with the terms use it. For example, I have a Russian friend who knows next to nothing about the LGBTQ+ community. I’m his only foreign friend _and_ I was the only queer person he knew until recently, so he didn’t even know what nonbinary meant until I came out to him. One time, he said he was aromantic because he has too much social anxiety to be in a relationship. What I’m trying to say is, I don’t think Dan meant any harm; I think he just wanted to tell people to stop sexualizing an animal, as it’s unfortunately very common in the fandom.
@@rowan404 even if this was how he meant it, it's still not a very great way to go about it If he wanted people to stop sexualizing Perry, he could've just said he didn't like it and asked people to stop Using ace people's identities as a way of "light-heartedly" addressing it still isn't great, and as an ace person as well it wouldn't feel all that great if Dan came out and said this was how he meant it I mean, imagine if a creator said a character gay not because they wanted to give people representation and help foster tolerance in their viewers, but because people shipping them with the female lead annoyed them and they wanted them to stop. I don't think anyone would want their identities to be used like that While I don't think there would have been any malice behind it if this were true, it's still worth discussing and not excusing, especially when it comes to someone with a platform like Dan's It's another example of how often we get disregarded and not taken seriously, and therefore there are still strides that need to be made towards broader ace and aro respect and acceptance
Sorry if I’m coming across dense but how is asking for romantic (and I guess in turn sexual but I feel like it’s just trying to find out attraction) orientation sexual? Like if you ask “is ____ gay?” that doesn’t mean that you’re sexualizing them, you’re just asking if they are gay. You can be like 3 and gay lol , no sex involved for that!
I think asexual people on Tumblr jumped on Perry being ace because we are so fucking starved for representation. And yeah, I agree that we deserve better. I also recommend Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children books, which have an asexual main character. Seanan herself is acespec.
I watched the first video that you made then checked your channel to binge your other ones while I was drawing, then found out that there was only one more. anyway, I just wanted to compliment the production quality of your videos and I have enjoyed the topics you covered very much! I hope you keep making videos!(only if you want to of course) :)
Great video. Im excited to see any future content you might make. If anyone is interested in watching other videos about ace representation, I would highly recommend The Ace Couple. They make a podcast which discusses asexual representation in media. I found them last year and Ive been enjoying their work ever since.
I also think asexual people deserve more representation, but tbh I like the idea of Perry being asexual because he really actually fits the identity well. You would never expect him to be interested in another sentient platypus because he just doesn’t feel like that kind of guy. Also, I don’t know how Dan and Swampy could possibly convey his asexuality in the show any more than they have now, considering that Phineas and Ferb aren’t even aware that he’s sentient, so he can’t exactly parade his pride flag around or anything. Only OWCA and Doofenshmirtz are aware that he’s even conscious enough to be able to have a sexual identity, and so that makes it kind of hard to convey he’s an ace in the show 3:03 I totally agree with this, though. I wish there were more combinations we get to see in media, and I hate how they get inflated with each other and also autism like they somehow can’t exist without the other. I am autistic and I like men. They’re hot and I want a big one to hold me 😳😳😳 Also unrelated but in the future episode they f@&%ing dropped the ball. I wanted Baljeet and Buford to get together SO BADLY you have no f@&%ing clue. I was so f@&%ing devastated. I wanted them to be into each other, and I don’t care whether it’s romantic or sexual or both
I was genuinely surprised when you mentioned in the other video that this was your first video, this is definitely not what I would expect from a first video! You have some great potential
I would also like to see more directly addressed ace representation in cartoons. Outside of the characters mentioned in this video I do know a few more examples of ace representation. Though most of them also fall in to the trend of having one or two lines in the show about them being ace or only being confirmed ace outside the show instead of having an actual asexual arc: Frank (ace) from "Harley Quinn" Octavia (ace) from "Helluva Boss" Mammon (ace) from "Helluva Boss" Mordecai Heller (ace) from "Lackadaisy" I do know some graphic novels that have more an ace narrative. Some are autobiographies: Rebecca Burgess (ace) from "How to be Ace: A Memoir of Growing Up Asexual" Maia Kobabe (ace) from "Gender Queer: A Memoir" Tori Spring (aro-spec and ace) from "Heartstopper"
I also hope we get better rep eventually, especially with the revival coming up. Sadly I think another layer that complicates this is disney because they're SO weird with lgbt stuff. I swear I've heard something that Alex Hirsch pushed pretty hard for gay rep in GF but the idea got rejected. But it's been a while so hopefully that won't matter. I would hope the show runners at least attempt queer representation--even if disney doesn't allow it, we would at least know they tried? Then again they pushed to have Phineas and Ferb be step brothers so I don't see why they couldn't push for queer characters *squinty eyes*.
You're so right!! That's how I interpreted you talking about this in the Lady Krillers video, but I can see how people can easily see it another way- As someone who is asexual, autistic, and genderqueer it sucks to see people that are coded ace/autistic being infantilized. I find that it really effects fandom spaces as well...I've seen many an adult that is coded/head cannoned as Ace/Autistic being made more childish in said spaces 😭 (Edit: Theres nothing wrong with people of those identities that are! Just sucks when thats the mold that's been made for most characters) Thank you for another video! I love seeing more lgbtq creators on here c: (Also I LOVE your talksprites!!!) However please take care of yourself first and foremost! You are so much more important than the videos you put out
As someone who’s currently in a questioning state when it comes to sexuality. I don’t mind Swampy’s response to the question. Yes there are certainly people who’re LGBT+ in their world. But when you strip away all the bigotry & right to be heard. LGBT+ relationships are just that. Relationships. And a character’s sexuality or identity doesn’t always have to be core part of their character. Similar to how not every character who’s straight, doesn’t need a romantic story. Part of this is to do with me wanting to more friendship stories. Especially between genders just so we can push back on toxic stereotypes like if you’re friends with someone, it’s obviously gotta go deeper than that. Or if you’re friends with someone, that means you got ‘friend-zoned’. But I also think it’s important to realise that no relationship needs to be hyped up more than another. Although that last one’s a double edged sword, because in a time when bigots are still throwing around outdated beliefs at younger generations. We need to hype up LGBT+ representation just to combat them. But taking prejudice out of the equation. Relationships, regardless of sexuality or identity. Don’t always have to be used for a character. The amount of times I’ve seen people react to two fictional characters fighting & they say something like ‘Look at the sexual tension.’ is very worrying. Would I want Perry the Platypus to be ace? Not really. But at the same time, I wouldn’t want him to be traditionally straight either. Not because I don’t want to see representation. But because I don’t want to see this character in a romantic relationship in general. You can do way more with this character than just boiling him down to his romance.
To me, if i a cartoon never set out to represent then it shouldn't be criticised for not representing. If the creator queer baits then that's bad but if they just have it as a fun fact in random comment sections, then that's no problem I actually like when creators decide a character is aro to stop any romance plot, because as an acearo myself, romance drama is boring and anoying so a creator shutting down the idea is appreciated (romance itself isn't bad, the melodrama is). And the romance not really jokes are funnier without actual romance, you feel me? I'm ace myself and i am sad with the lack of representation too, but as long as the creator doesn't tell me they're gonna represent then I'm not gonna be disappointed when they don't. Ace characters can exist without plots about being ace TLDR: more would be appreciated but I'm not mad when creators don't want to outright represent. And even if unofficial, i like having a break from romance drama But if you remove a character's asexuality when adapting/remaking a story i will cut you
A couple of characters from Helluva Boss (a popular indie animated show) were confirmed to be ace recently, one of which happened to be one of my favorite characters too, which made me so unbelievably happy
This is a very minor nitpick, but I don't know if I'd say Alastor is ace-coded? One episode he was outright referred to as an "Ace in the hole", and that seems pretty explicit to me lol
If any ace individuals are fine with these characters getting labeled as Ace in a random interview or post online then more power to ya, they're fun characters and should be enjoyed by fans regardless. But yeah it would be nice if damn near all inclusive rep for ace and other members of the community wasn't so commonly JUST that. I'm very happy with the examples of genuine progressive rep we have in many new shows, I'm sure it's a bit easier to explore that now (though still extremely strict, and bigots are always gonna be loud and obnoxious abt it) but hopefully we don't settle at this and continue to progress as a society with better more informed and accepting values that aren't rooted in regressive attitudes. I know the world is pretty crazy right now and cartoons are in part seen as escapist media, but it's import for media to be POSITIVELY affected by the real world and not negatively. Because either way, it's going to be affected and people are going to keep trying to push others down for dehumanizing reasons.
You should play "In Stars and Time" For a lot of reasons because it's fucking amazing but also the creator is asexual and the game has 2 asexual characters!!! As well as gay and trans characters! EVRYONE SHOULD PLAY IT. THE WRITING IS SO GOOD
5:21 I wouldn't put Lilith and Peridot there though, even though they are tehnicly non-human they are still treated as such, Perry is trully an animal Lilith is just a human with pointy ears and a magical bile sack, it's not even close.
Not just that but the show even offhandedly shows that humans and witches are compatible enough to have children with each other. So while not humans, they’re 99.99% identical
I was one of the people who originally left a comment on the Lady Krillers video, and I like this follow up. I was never angered by your original comment, nor do I actually remember what I even wrote, but I really appreciate this video. I also agree that asexual representation is incredibly lacking to a frustrating point, but part of me still loves what we have. Yes, SpongeBob is an infantilized non-human, but I just relate to him so much that him being somewhat canonically ace is really appreciated, even if it doesn’t feel like much representation at all. I agree that there needs to be more representation that doesn’t treat asexuals as children, loveless (not that aroace rep isn’t also needed), inhuman, etc. It’s hard to explain my identity to others, and it’s hard to accept it myself. Being able to point to a fictional character that’s just a normal person who’s also ace would be nice. The Scott the Woz character Rex Mohs is the closet thing I could think of, but none of the Scott the Woz characters act that normal haha. Also, for a book recommendation of my own, I loved the manga Is Love the Answer? by Uta Isaki. It mostly follows aroace characters, but I still found it to be incredibly relatable and one of my favorite asexual works I’ve seen.
Honestly, I got so happy when I saw people saying perry is aroace. They're lying though, he's only confirmed to be asexual, and I think that's something that really annoys me. People often think asexual is the same thing as aromantic, or think you can't just be alloasexual or alloaromantic. The fact that the community even created a name for it is really impressive, that's not something you should need to mention. Most of these characters that are confirmed to be asexual are also considered to be aromantic, when not confirmed to be aroace too.
i loved this ¡¡¡ i agree w everything you covered here . aro and ace representation has always been lacking even in queer friendly media , not to mention how ppl tend to confuse these 2 terms or think they mean the same thing . this uhh confirmation that weve gotten ... if you can even call it that ... really is just a copout to get us to stop asking . cant help but feel like bujeet and perryshmirtz are lowkey queerbait bc theres already been so many moments and indicators and whole ass episodes and songs but its still being treated as a haha lmao joke . as much as i adore pnf and mml i feel like dan and swampy wont give us actual rep in a million years . which is pretty sad but ,,,, trans + ace perry will always be real and canon to me just like all the other hcs i hold near and dear to my heart . even if whatever we have rn isnt much at all it def wont stop me from queerifying this show even further . bc thats showbiz baby [and autism] sorry for the long ass comment ¡ and thank you for this awsome vid =:]] subscription issued
vivid/stasis has an alloromantic asexual main character If you're reading this consider playing vivid/stasis its a rhythm game with a really good story and metafiction elements and it has puzzles and its FREE
This might be a weird thing to point that that has literally nothing to do with the point of the overall video, but I still wanted to highlight it. I really like your editing choice with how you display text on screen. Usually people male their additional text really tiny or so huge it takes up half the screen (that's what I do), but i like how you put them in shaded bubbles in corners. Reminds me of classic TH-cam annotations. Also as an aroace person... YES! More representation please! I understand why it's tough for asexuality to be presented in all ages entertainment, but I can think of several scenarios for how you could tell an aromantic story. It could be funny, and emotional, and heartwarming, and all that good stuff. Who knows? Maybe the upcoming P&F revival will have some surprises
Well, in that one future episode. They said they got asked the question of "Will we ever see Perry get a girlfriend?" And the response was no. So that comment could be referring to that. He's also a semi-aquatic, egg laying, mammal of action. He has no time for relationships. Who knows, maybe he's neutered lol.
A very interesting video with some good points throughout! I do have one nitpick, though, and it's regarding creators for Disney shows not being allowed to confirm if their characters are LGBT+. That's not exactly true. One of Disney's earlier TV cartoons, Gargoyles, has a character named Lexington who the creators have confirmed is gay. While true that he isn't confirmed within the show to be gay, it was confirmed by the creators and is even hinted at more heavily within the comics. I also believe Daron Nefcy confirmed to a fan that one of the previous queens from Star vs. the Forces of Evil is sapphic when the Book of Spells was released.
As an asexual, holy fuck so many of your points resonated with me harddddd. Especially the part where you were complaining about poorly done ace coded characters. Very well done video all around. Nice job ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
i do agree in that it'd be really appreciated to have more asexual representation in media. a lot of people tend to confuse aro and ace or think that it is simply lack of sexual attraction at all instead of an entire spectrum due to how little representation there currently is TwT i havent come across myself with ace or aro representation in series, but probably my favorite one from media in general is the character Manami from the vn trilogy A Year of Springs _(spoilers: she finds out about what being aroace means in the story focused on her and tries to accept the fact that she is in fact both aromantic and asexual)_ especially as through her inner thoughts its shown an aspect that many people tend to overlook, that being that aromantic and asexual people also struggle with inner doubts and sometimes self-rejection. also i'd probably say that John Egbert also gives me strong aroace vibes as he seems to be somewhat oblivious whenever someone is interested in him and doesn't really seem to actually crush on anybody. most likely same situation with Jake actually (also also i do agree as well that it'd also be nice to have asexual representation not necessarily paired with aromantic since, while it's also nice, it's probably what causes so many people confusion between the 2)
I’m so fucking jealous of you getting 4,000 subscribers with ONE video btw 😅 It’s well deserved, but certainly something I can’t help but be highly envious of
Edgeworth from Ace Attorney might be aro or ace because he said in a DLC case that he didn't want to marry. But again, it is maybe because capcom doesn't want to pair him with anyone.
Even if most of the people involved with any media with ace and/or aro representation are allocishet, it really would be a great idea to put more thought and research into asexuality and aromanticity. Iyww why I said *allo*cishet, simply saying cishet fails to account for those of attraction statuses on the asexual spectrum as well as the aormantic spectrum.
After watching both vids, I can say that the creators (phineas and ferb/MML)dont mean harm is that they are ignorant of this stuff. With what those shows accomplished, I believe that with the right push/teaching moment to them they can make something great for the lgbt community. Also, I like characters that are coded aro or ace or both. It's some of the best lgbt reprensation (accidentally).Logistically, I can think so many characters that would fall under those umbrellas like for example Luffy,Sonic(games), etc. I know it would be great if in the universe they were stated aro or ace, but these are baby steps to unrestricted reprensation.
hey i'm new to your content (yeah the lady killers video got me here) and it seems like you're mostly interested in cartoon media but i might be wrong so i wanted to give a small rec for a show heartbreak high there's an asexual queer man character that's handled very well in my opinion, he's openly saying he's romantically interested in people but doesn't like things going further and his struggles of trying to maintain a relationship with an allosexual person are handled realistically and well too!
"too innocent" is often a point made in conversation about aro/ace people. I believe that the people making these comments often say this to infantilize them. For some reason straight people do this to distance themselves from the aro/ace people or LGBTQ+ people as a whole. I'm not aromantic or asexual, but I am autistic, and that rhetoric is thrown at us in a very similar way. When people think different, bigots distance.
Actually. Alaster has never been confirmed fo be aro. Just ace. And it actually IS referenced im fhe show. Indirectly but thats because its clear in the episode fhat alastor doesnf accept his own asexuality, mostly due to his own upbringing in Louisiana. It us likely it WILL be brought up in thw show later but we have so little content there just wasnt any room for it ofher than the one reference.
i hate that a lot of aro, ace and nb rep is often nonhuman characters (like mentioned in the video) as if it's so hard to believe that a human could possibly be any of those things :/
Pretty unrelated (Probably shouldn’t speak on this as a non Ace anyways) but as someone who watched Hamster and Gretel, it’s fine, but you’ll have to look past the pretty stiff animation
“Only cops, dads, or cop dads can be gay in Disney television” OH MY GOD YES thank you! Even in Owl House, with all the gay rep, the queer MEN in the show didn’t get ANYTHING.
Also a big problem that I see is that they never say Aromantic. Like obviously I get a lack of knowledge but NONE OF THE OTHER ROMANTICALLY(PROBABLY SEXUALLY) INVOLVED CHARACTERS GET A BONER? ITS A KIDS SHOW OBVIOUSLY! SO IT WOULD BE AROMANTIC! Obviously as an aroace person im not complaining but they never treat Aromantic people as existing-
I also don't like the way Peridot's aromantic identity and asexuality are treated either. This is because most attribute Peridot not fusing to the fact that she's aro-ace, but here's the problem with that: Fusion as a whole is treated as the fullest and most freeing form of love amongst gems, and while some of the gems express it through sxual love, it's not the *only* form of love expressed through fusion. As one of the S.U. creators put it very bluntly "fusion isn't purely an allegory for s3x, cuz if it was, it'd make every single time Steven fuses with one of his gem moms or his dad very weird. Not to mention Steven and Connie have fused multiple times at this point, and they're both minors." For this reason, saying the fact that Peridot can't and doesn't fuse is because she's aro-ace is saying Peridot can't feel love *at all.* However anyone who knows what being aro-ace means and anyone whose seen the show knows that said statement is false in both regards. Peridot does and still can show familial, maternal, and platonic love. Even if that doesn't include romantic or sxual love. If anything, the fact that she doesn't fuse is completely unrelated, and is more likely rooted in the fact that, up until she joined the gems, she was raised in a very closed off society that completely disapproved of *any* form of love, especially if it resulted in the fusion of two separate kinds of gems.
Wow, if I had a nickel for every time I watched a video about phineas and ferb or it’s brother series Milo Murphy’s Law and LGBTQIA+ community on this channel, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that there was enough stuff in these shows to have these videos made, right?
I think Shows Like Phineas And ferb don't need to Talk about hey they this gander it's Something we're stuff Like south park Simpson Family Guy Sure yeah but when i watch Phineas And ferb i Just wanna turn my brain Off And have a good time Not my brain See that And Go hey Homophobie and other Bad stuff are Things i don't wanna think about The real world Bad stuff when i watch Things Like Phineas And ferb
"Does asexual count" Does asexual count as part of the lgbt community? What a dumb question, of course they are part of the lgbt, I hate this "Does it count" like he doesn't see it as a proper orientation.
Unrelated to the main topic, but Big Mouth as a whole has represented and discussed SEVERAL LGBTQ identities, even panseuxal??? And none of it is done through Death of The Author. It’s just never discussed because no one sane would watch Big Mouth. Rightfully so, the show is bad… In case you’re curious: transgender, gay, bisexual, pansexual, lesbian, kink, and ace rep has been directly discussed in the show.
2:44 i'll never forget the time in the big hero 6 animated series where the creators were like "hey, this an action adventure show that's been going on for a while now. You know what a show like this 𝘵𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 needs? A forced Will They Won't They romance subplot that could straight up not exist and the show would just straight up be better because more time could go to further making the narrative better because we're definitely not going to put that time into making a *good* romance subplot either. But who to do it with? Oh! *HOW ABOUT WE CHOOSE TO MAKE THE ROMANCE SUBPLOT REVOLVE AROUND THE CHARACTER THE WE HAD HANG UP AN ARO-ACE FLAG IN THE FIRST MOVIE?"* What makes it even more worse was the first half of the entire subplot was spent around how Hiro thought it was creepy and weird that Carmen was writing self insert fanfictions with his superhero identity! Which means that up until the back half of the romance subplot, they could've still played it as " hey, this super creepy, I'm aro-ace and have been canonized that way since my debut, but like, we can still be friends," and none of the plot involving Carmen would even change!
(Please aces and aros read till the end 💜🤍🩶🖤) I agree with everything you’re saying. I’m an older ace so I’ve already gotten used to kidnapping characters to be representation and if a creator confirms it I’m just like “Oh that’s cool” it doesn’t change that much in my mind. I really hope and believe that we will be getting more teen and adult shows with ace and queer representation as more queer people are working hard and being accepted to make shows about this topic, it’s very exciting and hopefully it will normalize shows adding that representation with more genuine care. Now I will dump a bunch of ace related content into this comment 🎉 For shows we got The disastrous life of Saiki is a anime basically about an aroace man dealing with the bullshit of reality, very relatable. Oh and there’s loveless a book all about an aroace teen I haven’t read it yet Lego monkie kid is a really good kid show (trust me watch fight scene clips and it’s hilarious) that I’m not sure how we did it but the fandom completely accepts that the three younger main characters are Aspec in different ways people have head canon more but it’s not as understandable, anyway I love this show. People say Luffy from One piece is aroace but it’s not a main topic and I haven’t watched that far. Sorry I don’t have more for shows (I could talk about head canons hhhmm not now) anyway now TH-camrs! Fluently aspec is a whole channel about it and I find him really relatable. Hearts of titan is a queer show with a few a spec characters. Ros mo is ace and aro and she has a song called Cupid’s arrow I think Shubble is an ace gaming creator Dingo doodles sips the “main character” is ace but it doesn’t come up often I would still recommend the story. Now for the songs I found most of them on a Spotify playlist called asexual anthem 💜🤍🩶🖤 with the flag as the picture I think there’s a lot of songs that can apply to aromantic anyway here are some of my favorites I’m so tired…by Lauv, Troye Sivan. Crush culture by Conan gray. Everybody’s lonely by the jukebox ghost. Version of love by will jay. I’m good by the mowgli’s. Don’t wanna fall in love by Green Day (there’s a pinch of swearing). Don’t fall in love by danko jones. Never been in love by will jay. Aromantic by mike fonzarelli robert. Aromantic mood board by Maxwell Anthony. (More swearing) Falling behind by laufey (I think it kinda fits). Never love an anchor by crane wives My challenge to you is try searching for any aroace content on anything google stories, TH-cam, Pinterest and search more music playlists just look for more things that are like your expression/experience, you deserve some ❤. Also no matter where you are in the future or are struggling to fit with any LGBTQA+ label it’s perfectly fine, life is fluid and ever changing, it simply means you were apart of that community for a time or hell you’re always welcomed in, please just living unapologetically~You~ (do I have to say without harming anyone that’s common sense right?) no matter how you explain or express yourself! that’s your business and happiness everyone else can pout or throw a tantrum about your existence but I appreciate your existence!
There is a mention of Alastor being ace in the actual show
Rosie makes a comment jokingly saying Charlie is much too young to be dating Alastor and then says she knows he’s an ace in the hole, which Alastor is very confused by
I like how this implies Alastor himself doesn’t know he’s Ace because he’s from a time period where any LGBTQIA+ person would be mocked and looked down upon, if Viv was more willing to do character building episodes, a cute one could be Alastor realizing he’s Ace, trying to hide it because he’d see it as a weakness, then the hotel crew finds out and they’re all supportive of him
Which makes me kinda annoyed with how much people ship Alastor with other characters in the Hazbin fandom, I get it’s all good fun and Vivzie herself said it was fine, but I dunno, Alastor is one of the most popular Ace cartoon characters so to have that aspect of him stripped in so many fan works rubs me the wrong way
I’m not part of the LGBTQIA+ community myself (I’m straight and would gladly have Ceroba Ketsukane from Undertale Yellow step on me) but I do supports making others feel comfortable in their own skin and loving who they love, and I’d love to see more Ace representation in media
So I’m just not a big fan of that aspect of Alastor being removed so many times over for fan works, then again that’s just me
Alastor shipping makes me want to drive my head through a wall.
Being asexual doesn't mean not being involved in relationships, which I think a lot of people forget about when talking about asexual characters, saying that 'them being in a relationship erases their asexuality', which I disagree with, but I get why it's a concern, since it can be fumbled pretty easily.
alastor wouldn't want to understand it anyway,he hates anything modern
I'm grayrose and I understand the frustration
I think for me it comes more from knowing that many people blatantly disregard aromaticism and asexuality and their validity
"Viv said it's okay" "asexuality/aromaticism is a spectrum" seem like excuses to disregard a valid identity because it gets in the way of your otp, rather than a genuine interest in bringing to attention and representing a diverse range of asexual/aromantic experiences
It's a pain that many aroace people feel in real life every time they get told something like "you just have to find the right person"
I feel like shippers need to expand their horizons to different kinds of relationships. I would absolutely love to see more queerplatonic or just platonic ships, but many fandoms seem to make shipping solely about romance and sex (even I'm no saint)
Queerplatonic radioapple and radiosilence are my favorite Alastor ships and there is so much fun you can have with them without romance or sex involved, but people always seem to default to what they know and then make excuses
I'm also disappointed in Viv not confirming what type of aroace he is for the sake of shipping
I'm not saying anyone who makes and writes aro/ace character must specify, I tend to leave mine ambiguous, but the fact that she said she did it specifically to not get in the way of ships really rubs me the wrong way. It comes off a perpetuating the idea that a particular identity is an obstacle/inconvenience to an allo person's desire for a sexual and/or romantic in a relationship, rather than a something valid that deserves to be respected
Honestly I feel the aro and ace communities should be more willing to be vocal and critical about something like this, because "I left it ambiguous so ace and/or aro people from all over the spectrums could see themselves in them" and "I left it ambiguous so their identity wouldn't get in the way of/discourage shipping" give off two completely different messages about how asexuality and aromanticism are viewed by the person who made the character, and it can enable broader ace/arophobia in the community surrounding their work
@@kangarooMonkee I totally understand that!
Hahaha😂 and why put characters like that? for a question of "representation" LGBTQXYZ+-×÷=
In the defense of Peridot and Lilith at least, both are "human-adjacent" rather than directly people.
Edit- Matt and Gus find unverified. However, Benson from Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts i s a gay male character who is one of the main characters.
Still, very important points addressed here- especially about how it seems almost avoidant whether anything's confirmed or not.
and for both of them, the trait is not 'inherent' to the species
@@ThylineTheGay Exactly. This can apply to a lot of Owl House really- demons as "stand-ins" for humans, in terms of rep.
Which is why Perry seems to be mixed in intent.
I watched every single q&a or podcast with Dana and the crew, I never heard of Gus and Matt having a relatiinship, where did you heard that?
@@amesstarline5482 It would probably feel a little more genuine if some of the other agents did experience romantic feelings so the rep doesn't just get boiled down to "oh he won't date bc he's an animal and therefore not human lol". Still wouldn't be *perfect* but it would maybe be better
@@bdariamihaela I thought someone confirmed it off-chat. Looks like that doesn't seem confirmed.
FYI, Alastor was mentioned to be ace in the show. As for him being aro, it was actually never confirmed, although it's a very popular headcanon/fanon (thus many people think he's confirmed aroace while he's only confirmed ace)
EDIT: My bad. Alastor was confirmed to be aro in an official livestream.
I've seen a lot of people saying that someone asked Vizviepop if he was aromantic too, apparently she confirmed that he is aroace.
"Peridot is not a human" so are all the other gems
That's a good point. The person in this video was just using Peridot as an example of non human ace rep
Yea I get where the non human critique comes from, but when most if not the entire cast isn't human/they aren't the same race but they are shown to experience things like attraction pretty much the same as humans, it kinda falls flat
There are gems that have romantic (and in Rose's case sexual) attraction, so I fail to see how one of them being ace suddenly means that the writers were creating a stereotype about non humans being ace
Like if I write a story that centers around anthropomorphic cryptids and I want to make an ace character, am I supposed to shove in a random human for it in even though my main cast are pretty much cognitively the same as humans to avoid the stereotype?
It would be a valid critique if the ace character was the ONLY non human in the cast, but when the entire cast isn't there's no point to it like "no shit Sherlock, nobody is human"
if anyone wants to see good ace rep i highly recommend a game called "in stars and time"
it has 2 (or more wink wink) asexual characters, one is aroace and the other is asexual, it's represented very well (honestly surprised by how well it's written) and it's a great game overall
IN STARS AND TIME MENTION LET'S GOOO 🗣🗣‼️‼️
Also living for the ISAT mention!
It has a lot of good queer representation in a natural way with great writing. It's also a fun game~
I think this was a great topic to cover after some of the miscommunications people had when watching your lady krillers video surrounding something you said with perry's asexuality
your videos are great, and you're a really nice person, i really hope you keep uploading more :3
I actually meant to leave a comment under your Lady Krillers video about this but forgot until now:
I don’t think Dan meant to pander to the LGBTQ+ community with that reply.
@@rowan404 even if this was how he meant it, it's still not a very great way to go about it
If he wanted people to stop sexualizing Perry, he could've just said he didn't like it and asked people to stop
Using ace people's identities as a way of "light-heartedly" addressing it still isn't great, and as an ace person as well it wouldn't feel all that great if Dan came out and said this was how he meant it
I mean, imagine if a creator said a character gay not because they wanted to give people representation and help foster tolerance in their viewers, but because people shipping them with the female lead annoyed them and they wanted them to stop. I don't think anyone would want their identities to be used like that
While I don't think there would have been any malice behind it if this were true, it's still worth discussing and not excusing, especially when it comes to someone with a platform like Dan's
It's another example of how often we get disregarded and not taken seriously, and therefore there are still strides that need to be made towards broader ace and aro respect and acceptance
@@VintageToilet Context is key here.
Man, you're right. Now that I think about it, there's like zero ace representation in children's media. All I can think of is Gwenpool.
Only OWCA and Doofenshmirtz are aware that he’s even conscious enough to be able to have a sexual identity, and so that makes it kind of hard to convey he’s an ace in the show
3:03 I totally agree with this, though. I wish there were more combinations we get to see in media, and I hate how they get inflated with each other and also autism like they somehow can’t exist without the other. I am autistic and I like men. They’re hot and I want a big one to hold me 😳😳😳
Also unrelated but in the future episode they f@&%ing dropped the ball. I wanted Baljeet and Buford to get together SO BADLY you have no f@&%ing clue. I was so f@&%ing devastated. I wanted them to be into each other, and I don’t care whether it’s romantic or sexual or both
Really great clarification!
I think this covers a lot of how ace representation can be improved.
@@davvistavaratipula4276 get better material dipshit
I was genuinely surprised when you mentioned in the other video that this was your first video, this is definitely not what I would expect from a first video! You have some great potential
I want to make an indie show, obviously to get my creativity out, but also to give the world the ace and qpr rep it needs
I would also like to see more directly addressed ace representation in cartoons. Outside of the characters mentioned in this video I do know a few more examples of ace representation. Though most of them also fall in to the trend of having one or two lines in the show about them being ace or only being confirmed ace outside the show instead of having an actual asexual arc:
Frank (ace) from "Harley Quinn"
Octavia (ace) from "Helluva Boss"
Mammon (ace) from "Helluva Boss"
Mordecai Heller (ace) from "Lackadaisy"
I do know some graphic novels that have more an ace narrative. Some are autobiographies:
Rebecca Burgess (ace) from "How to be Ace: A Memoir of Growing Up Asexual"
Maia Kobabe (ace) from "Gender Queer: A Memoir"
Tori Spring (aro-spec and ace) from "Heartstopper"
He's a platypus, they don't do much
babe babe!! wake up, new Acesten video just dropped :3
Just sucks when thats the mold that's been made for most characters)
Thank you for another video! I love seeing more lgbtq creators on here c: (Also I LOVE your talksprites!!!) However please take care of yourself first and foremost! You are so much more important than the videos you put out
As a fellow ace, I agree with these points. I do hope to see ace representation improve. (also, Dakavandish should be canon)
If the creator queer baits then that's bad but if they just have it as a fun fact in random comment sections, then that's no problem
I actually like when creators decide a character is aro to stop any romance plot, because as an acearo myself, romance drama is boring and anoying so a creator shutting down the idea is appreciated (romance itself isn't bad, the melodrama is). And the romance not really jokes are funnier without actual romance, you feel me?
I'm ace myself and i am sad with the lack of representation too, but as long as the creator doesn't tell me they're gonna represent then I'm not gonna be disappointed when they don't. Ace characters can exist without plots about being ace
TLDR: more would be appreciated but I'm not mad when creators don't want to outright represent. And even if unofficial, i like having a break from romance drama
But if you remove a character's asexuality when adapting/remaking a story i will cut you

Not just that but the show even offhandedly shows that humans and witches are compatible enough to have children with each other. So while not humans, they’re 99.99% identical
Not to be mean but "Acesten" sounds like the name of the fifth Pokemon gym leader who specializes in flying types.
PENUMBRA PHANTASM JUMPSCARE HELLO????? you can't just throw that on me and expect me to not be caught off guard
I feel like he’s ace, in the same way Dumbledoor is gay. Cannon, and not contradicted at all, but not at all relevant.
Alastor was confirmed in the show as well
I was one of the people who originally left a comment on the Lady Krillers video, and I like this follow up.
I dont really care about being represented I just want to be accepted.
Most of these characters that are confirmed to be asexual are also considered to be aromantic, when not confirmed to be aroace too.
i loved this ¡¡¡ i agree w everything you covered here . aro and ace representation has always been lacking even in queer friendly media , not to mention how ppl tend to confuse these 2 terms or think they mean the same thing . this uhh confirmation that weve gotten ... if you can even call it that ... really is just a copout to get us to stop asking . cant help but feel like bujeet and perryshmirtz are lowkey queerbait bc theres already been so many moments and indicators and whole ass episodes and songs but its still being treated as a haha lmao joke . as much as i adore pnf and mml i feel like dan and swampy wont give us actual rep in a million years . which is pretty sad but ,,,, trans + ace perry will always be real and canon to me just like all the other hcs i hold near and dear to my heart . even if whatever we have rn isnt much at all it def wont stop me from queerifying this show even further . bc thats showbiz baby [and autism]

You're right about how there's not enough ace rep, but idk i still don't really think there's any problem with Perry
Nice job ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

i do agree in that it'd be really appreciated to have more asexual representation in media. a lot of people tend to confuse aro and ace or think that it is simply lack of sexual attraction at all instead of an entire spectrum due to how little representation there currently is TwT
i havent come across myself with ace or aro representation in series, but probably my favorite one from media in general is the character Manami from the vn trilogy A Year of Springs _(spoilers: she finds out about what being aroace means in the story focused on her and tries to accept the fact that she is in fact both aromantic and asexual)_ especially as through her inner thoughts its shown an aspect that many people tend to overlook, that being that aromantic and asexual people also struggle with inner doubts and sometimes self-rejection.
also i'd probably say that John Egbert also gives me strong aroace vibes as he seems to be somewhat oblivious whenever someone is interested in him and doesn't really seem to actually crush on anybody. most likely same situation with Jake actually
(also also i do agree as well that it'd also be nice to have asexual representation not necessarily paired with aromantic since, while it's also nice, it's probably what causes so many people confusion between the 2)
I’m so fucking jealous of you getting 4,000 subscribers with ONE video btw 😅 It’s well deserved, but certainly something I can’t help but be highly envious of
Edgeworth from Ace Attorney might be aro or ace because he said in a DLC case that he didn't want to marry.
New, but I just wanted to say that I love your vids (even if there are only two) and hope you do more. Keep up the amazing work (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤
I know it would be great if in the universe they were stated aro or ace, but these are baby steps to unrestricted reprensation.
mad respect for coming back, i remembber seeing the vile comment section in your last video
hey i'm new to your content (yeah the lady killers video got me here) and it seems like you're mostly interested in cartoon media but i might be wrong so i wanted to give a small rec for a show heartbreak high there's an asexual queer man character that's handled very well in my opinion, he's openly saying he's romantically interested in people but doesn't like things going further and his struggles of trying to maintain a relationship with an allosexual person are handled realistically and well too!
I feel like they really could have not responded if they didn't have too much to say. Would have avoided a lot of confusion
Alastor is ace in the show. Like the word ace is said.
I haven’t watched the show, but wasn’t alistair called ace at one point? Like directly?
I personally consider Charlie from HH to be an asexual and bisexual. Mostly because of how uncomfortable with sexual topics she is.
As someone who is aro and autistic I really appreciate your videos and your opinions on representation in media. Best of luck to you in the future.
Good Video. Will also never forgive what happened to Jughead.
Unrelated but what music do you like?
i hate that a lot of aro, ace and nb rep is often nonhuman characters (like mentioned in the video) as if it's so hard to believe that a human could possibly be any of those things :/
Pretty unrelated (Probably shouldn’t speak on this as a non Ace anyways) but as someone who watched Hamster and Gretel, it’s fine, but you’ll have to look past the pretty stiff animation
Keep up the great work and your underrated I wish more people knew about
“Only cops, dads, or cop dads can be gay in Disney television” OH MY GOD YES thank you!
Obviously as an aroace person im not complaining but they never treat Aromantic people as existing-
Bojack is horrible representation
I honestly found Todd’s rep to be the best I’ve seen, what about it made it horrible for you? /gen
@@steampunk-llama he liked girls before
:D
I think I found a new favorite TH-camr
Wow, if I had a nickel for every time I watched a video about phineas and ferb or it’s brother series Milo Murphy’s Law and LGBTQIA+ community on this channel, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that there was enough stuff in these shows to have these videos made, right?
mlem
*Video Two*
I just realized your name is Ace, that’s funny
yo make a discord
Rightfully so, the show is bad…
In case you’re curious: transgender, gay, bisexual, pansexual, lesbian, kink, and ace rep has been directly discussed in the show.
What is a woman?
What the ligma...why is glwaugh doing this 😭🙏 get off of disney bluey fan 🗣🔥
first ten comments FUCK YA
Just wanna take a moment to say I enjoyed this and the ladykrillers video a lot, I was really excited to see you again on my youtube feed!! :o)
(Please aces and aros read till the end 💜🤍🩶🖤)
I agree with everything you’re saying.
Now I will dump a bunch of ace related content into this comment 🎉
For shows we got
The disastrous life of Saiki is a anime basically about an aroace man dealing with the bullshit of reality, very relatable.
Oh and there’s loveless a book all about an aroace teen I haven’t read it yet
Lego monkie kid is a really good kid show (trust me watch fight scene clips and it’s hilarious) that I’m not sure how we did it but the fandom completely accepts that the three younger main characters are Aspec in different ways people have head canon more but it’s not as understandable, anyway I love this show.
Ros mo is ace and aro and she has a song called Cupid’s arrow I think
Shubble is an ace gaming creator
Dingo doodles sips the “main character” is ace but it doesn’t come up often I would still recommend the story.
Now for the songs I found most of them on a Spotify playlist called asexual anthem 💜🤍🩶🖤 with the flag as the picture I think there’s a lot of songs that can apply to aromantic anyway here are some of my favorites

My challenge to you is try searching for any aroace content on anything google stories, TH-cam, Pinterest and search more music playlists just look for more things that are like your expression/experience, you deserve some ❤.
I will always welcome you in the rainbow community!Sending lots of love from an asexual Demi romantic pan! ❤
