I did an instagram post lately about the 'the names that got away' and we had a great chat about all the names we wish we'd had an opportunity to use and why we didn't pick them. So I thought I'd turn it into a video :-)
Do remember it's just for fun and a chat amongst friends - I'm not saying I hate my kids names but there's always ones I feel extra jealous when I hear them!
Let me know your Baby Name Regrets Below & the ones that got away! SJ xxxx

My kids were named Victoria Jane (Jane after my mum) and then, 8 years later 😳, Ewan Thomas (Thomas after my brother who passed away a few years before). I never regretted either of them but here’s the thing....my oldest child told us when they were 21 (now 23) that they identified as non binary and wanted to change their name to one that was gender neutral. They asked us to help pick a name which was so amazing, they’re now called Jamie, which is a nod to my dad who passed a couple of years ago, and I love it!!! More importantly, they love it and the change in them is indescribable. I’ve had people asking if I mind the name change. My reply? It’s just a name, people change them all the time!! All we as parents can do is pick the one we love and thinks suits them best at the time and go with it, when our kids are old enough they can always decide for themselves ☺️.

This isn’t really a regret, but just a little story... About a month after my husband and I met, it randomly came up that if he ever had a daughter, he would want to name her Penelope and call her Penny. I was shocked because that’s my late grandmother’s name, and I had always wanted to name a daughter Penelope. Now 6.5 years later, I’m pregnant with our first baby, a girl. We’re definitely naming her Penelope, but in these last few years it’s gotta so popular, AND we know 3 different people who have named their dogs Penny 😑 we’re still going for it because it means so much to us, but still! It’s a little bit frustrating.

That sound good in each language even when mispronounced??? 😂 They have very unique name combos, though. We have had this named picked out way before we ever knew we were pregnant & everyone knew that would be our name choice if we ever had a boy. We have had soooo many negative comments from our family saying it’s a girl name or that it’s just strange. But me & my husband love it so much and just have rose colored glasses on when it comes to the name August so we are using it regardless.

I had the opportunity over 20 years ago to adopt a 2 year old boy named Matthew. I turned the child down bc I wanted an infant, even though my hubby and I had chosen the name Matthew for our first son. I regret that decision and think of that little boy so often.
Years later I did have a baby girl, my husband misspelled her name and chose her middle name as I was almost dying on the table.
Later on we did adopt an infant boy, at at that time I wanted a toddler! His birth mom named him and we kept the name,Elijah.
So in actuality, I never named by kids!

I really like long names that have the potential for a lot of nicknames, so that my potential child could choose a nickname based on their personality as they grow older. My daughter is 14 months old and we named her Evelyn Rose. Which part of me is deeply regretting because I didn't realize how common it really was. I had wanted to name a girl Evelyn for most of my life and my husband wanted to name his daughter "Ellen Rose". I didn't like Ellen much so we combined them for Evelyn Rose. We loved it, it was classic and feminine and beautiful.... but there are SO many Evelyns and Evie's around (we call her Evie - (EE-vee) that it just doesn't seem as special as I always wanted it to be growing up.

My eldest daughter was going to be Yasmin throughout my whole pregnancy if she was a girl (we didn’t know the gender) and when she was born I saw her and she really did not look like a Yasmin in the slightest. So had to start from scratch and it took me a day and a half to come up with Leila. So when I had my second child I thought I’m not going through that again we’ll just name baby when it arrives. Within a couple of hours of her arrival we came up with Eleanor. Then we did the same again with number 3 and I was so shocked at how tiny she was she needed a really pretty dainty name so was poppy. They all have the same middle name which ties them together nicely it’s my middle name Mae although people think it’s weird they’ve all got the same name I like it and I don’t have any regrets.xx

That is how I thought I would always be. I am only 7 weeks along but when I was waiting to go into the fertility clinic I felt an enegry come and a name whispered in my ear. So I still want to wait until I meet the baby, but I just don't know if I can let it go. Last spring I kept picturing a baby/girl named Naomi and that is what my sister and bil picked for their first baby. So it makes these whispered names are really just kids waiting on the other side.

I suppose we have to remind ourselves these are their names now (not our names) and what they think of their own names is much more important now than what we think of them. If they end up preferring their middle names when older, they can use them as primary name of course

In 6th grade, there was another Hailey in my class and we had to always have the initial of our last names added when people would talk about or to us. And also with school work. The name in itself is not a bad name, by all means, but I just have a hard time feeling like it's really me because it's used so often. And when I say it to myself, to hear it, it just doesn't sound right. That's why I've started to prefer using Hais as my name on things.

I don't regret my daughter's name exactly, but we didn't tell it to anyone until she was born so I never heard anyone use it till we had already picked it. Her name is Cleodora or Cleo for short. We still love it, but didn't ever consider how often she would be called Chloe! It happens all of the time. Even with my own parents. I still like it but I wish I had realized that that could be an issue

Hi SJ could you please do a video based on names that can be spelt differently and have different meanings due to that, e.g; like Hallie. Xxx

We didn’t name our baby boy until he was born, we went with Casper Thomas 💓

Evelina is so pretty. If she ends up as something serious, she can use a nickname that sounds better at the bottom of a corporate letter, like “Evie B. [lastname], Solicitor”.

My names list for girls are Marina, Celeste, Lucia, Celine, Florence, Josephine and Jasmine. I will definitely name my future daughter one of these. I love how they are known but not overly. They also have beautiful meanings too.

I wish I were more courageous with names. I am drawn to unique names, bordering on pretty "out there" sometimes, but they sound so cool to me and I wish I had the courage to use them.
I get nervous about what people will think and it makes me step back to a more "normal" name. Examples of kinda strange or rarer names I like are Shepherd, Aphrodite, Severus, Atticus, Luscius, and Poet. Everybody in both our family's names and kid's names are names like Michael, Emma, Olivia, Sam, stuff like that. All fine names, but very common normal names. I feel like I'll look crazy alongside them.

We are TTC right now and we have more names picked out than kids we want 🤣. I hope when we pick names we are long term happy with them lol

I love the name Finn! Or Finley, I also love Oakley but my husband has the same sunglasses issue. Pregnant with baby boy #2 now, I like ‘soft’ boys names

We’re expecting a baby boy in December. Seriously considering Jude Lowen for middle names for this baby. Lowen is a Cornish name that means happy. I grew up going to Cornwall for holidays and love taking the kids there now when we visit the UK. Still working on a first name for this baby...

If TH-cam and Internet had been around 23 years ago, I might not have chosen Amanda. I love how it flows with our one syllable last name. It means “worthy of love” and she was adopted from China, so I think it’s perfect, even though it’s so common. I should have had more kids so I could name more babies. A sister would have been Annalia. I love Anna-Leah as a double barreled name, but not really the idea of double barreled. I think the Annalia spelling fixes that problem.

Amanda is a great name. It isn't weird, it's not very common, it's beautiful and has a beautiful meaning.
