Cyberpunk 2077 winning best ongoing game is a joke. The game is still "ongoing" because it launched so bug riddled that they had to release patch after patch just to get it into a place where it should have been at launch. Even more annoying, the DLC was nominated for a few GAME awards. It's not a game it's downloadable content for a game.

What's so ironic to me is that Geoff Keighley originally started The Game Awards as a reaction to the Spike TV VGAs (Video Game Awards) which became bloated with musical performances, ads, and things that had nothing to do with awarding video games. The problem is that the audience, and in particular the online audience is responsible for how much time is spent on which segment. Most people who watch the game awards skip forward to the game announcements and don't pay attention to the award segments. This is not the fault of the showrunners. They just take the statistics from the last show and propagate where they spend the money and time in the next show. But to make it better, the game award show should only allow the winners and nominees to show their trailers, and all the other trailers should be an additional show.

Actually, the game awards have always done this, it's nothing new. Even when they were the VGAs on Spike, they still had the same concept, have 90 percent be trailers, celebrities, and advertisements, while zooming through the awards as a compilations. This is why awards from other major gaming media, such as IGN (don't know if they still have yearly awards), are considered much more accurate by gamers

I think Geoff is aware of it but at this point is just happy he still has this job every year. The thing about TGA it's purpose is to celebrate Video Games as a medium that everyone can appreciate, but year after year I see EVIL behind the scenes and I think it just has to do with all the corruption behind the scenes with Hollywood, social media and the Elites likely trying to control what we consume.

I work on the corpo side of AV and handle some pretty big corporate conferences and keeping those people on time leads us to treading on some big ice not trying to get people to stick to time and always having a chain of command to go through to decide how aggressively we try to push that though. “Wrap it up and that flashing” is definitely not the way you want to get people off a stage.

The first couple of years of the Game Awards seemed to understand the assignment, have an avenue where hard work of developers and game studios could be appreciated and recognized. As time went on they horribly have taken the wrong lesson. Game announcements are fine and I get ads are a necessary evil, but I'm there to learn the developers journey and what this award means to them. The developers stopped being the focal point of this show in the past 4 or so years. I don't know how Geoff claims to be a lover of games when he won't even stand up for the developers at his own show. Truly disappointing. At this point there's no great reason to watch. I don't need to be part of the utter disrespect of folks who are already facing constant struggles of an abusive industry. I was hoping they could feel celebrated and clearly the developers have spoken out and have stated the opposite.

The problem is the same thing that is happening in the gaming industry right now, gamers aren’t running things, investors, CEO’s, and advertisers have the keys to running things. If the game awards didn’t have votes then we all wouldn’t pay it any mind because it’d just be advertisements and announcements, which we’d have/had E3 for (and E3 had so much more beyond the announcements and advertisements for up and coming games.)

The "priority" was clearly for Geoff to make as much money as their possibly is. That was the point for him, everything he complained about with E3 was just a lie. What he really wanted was more money. And this awards show exemplifies his greed.

The Game Awards are not about developers and how hard they work. The Game Awards are about Jeff Keighley and his ability to show off new games exclusively saved for the show. He doesn't give a shit about the devs.

You know, what if the devs didnt show up to the game awards next year? What if instead of being brushed off in front of thousands of people, the devs went home. What if next year the devs spend time with their families. Fuck your game awards, vapid shallow silcone trophies draped with adverts and hollow platitudes. Devs spend that time with your family next year, because they love you and you matter to them. Theres nothing you can create that will be worth the praise of soulless corps and their meaningless posturing they call gratitude. Your vision, artistry hard work, and worth is too great a gift. Give it to your loved ones instead.

Yes I agree, I'm very happy about BG3 winning 6 categories, well deserved, and some world premiers were interesting, BUT it was very sad how they cutted the speech of the award winners, some didnt even had the chance to go up there, these people and the consumers are the reason the industry exist! The AD shitfest is getting annoying, I get it they have to make the money but I think the event is poorly organised and is getting really hard to watch.

That was actually predicted to happen; even if we disagree with that, shows like that try to be as neutral as possible. But it leaves esp. sour taste, when it is then mirrored in devs' treatment during the show itself (i.e. relegating them to the second fiddle behind biz and marketing powermachine)

Don't expect them to say the problem in an event to celebrate the industry. The Academy Awards didn't allow CGI companies to say they're being mistreated. Remember Life of Pi? It won many awards and yet they forcibly remove the CGI folks who tried to say something on stage about their appalling work condition while making this film. It was so bad that less than a few months after that event the CGI company responsible for the SFX of Life of Pi closed down for business for good...
