    I appreciate this video showing the traditional inner thigh reaping uchi-mata. Too many videos out there using full hip "goshi" style more like hane-goshi. Thanks for sharing.

    • @blackgouk7745
      @blackgouk7745 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      EXACTLY. Everytime I see other videos saying "how to do uchi mata." They use all of their hips, which is hane goshi.

    • @thesensei
      @thesensei 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I was under the impression that Uchimata was with the hips all this time and that this “variation” shown here was merely “leg style” or even akin to a “kan kan.” I’ve always had trouble with the hip style Uchimata and just gave up on wanting to be proficient at the throw not knowing that this is how the Kodokan actually teaches Uchimata. lol
      Why are people doing hane goshi and calling it Uchimata? When did that start?

    • @cucciafr68
      @cucciafr68 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@thesensei In Japan (and other places) a competition style uchi mata has developed that has tori striking the inside of uke's far lef that very much resembles hane goshi. Basically take hane goshi where you frame on uke's hip and the front of their leg and rotate so that contact is now inside their thigh. It could probably be called a hane uchi mata.

    As demonstrated this throw would never work in practice. As Tori turns to his right and pulls uke around, this movement forces uke's weight to the leg opposite of the one Tori is about to reap. This movement actually helps uke step his unweighted right leg behind his now weighted left leg and perform a sukashi counter or simply dodge the throw. This turn and pull to a perfectly balanced uke is the reason the more modern "hane-uchi-mata" with the hips in is now taught. Tori is basically loading uke's weight for a harai goshi or hane goshi and trying to perform uchi mata.This is the exact opposite of what is advocated in Jigoro Kano's own text, "Kodokan Judo". It explicitly states that uchi mata is applied to uke's leg as his weight is being transferred to it, not away from it. Given a traditional left hand sleeve right hand collar Tori grip, uchi mata is most perfectly applied when uke steps their leg around to Tori's right. This iso most obviously seen in the Nage no Kata; an uchi mata applied as uke circles Tori and applied as uke's weight shifts onto the leg being attacked. All the modern variants are a result of the way people practice all throws now; to a stationary uke when doing uchikomi. You can't do uchi mata correctly in such a situation unless uke is in a jigo tai posture and is being very defensive. In that case uke's weight is so deeply distributed over both legs that even if Tori turns uke as in this videos's example, there will still be enough weight on the attacked leg that the throw will execute properly.

    May I ask why tori release his grip from the lapel? This happens in this video and in most of this Kodokan video series.
    The kake is somewhat deficient in the final arm action, because there is a lack of control and capacity to transfer force during this final phase.
    It would be good if Kodokan could solve this question since his criterion is the reference to be followed in the basic or ideal model of the technique (Kyu and Dan exams).
    Best regards.

      You can drive all the way down if you want; you can even roll through; but the classical way is to let go of the lapel and remain on your feet. Bear in mind that here tori is very tall and heavy (I've met him) and also quite old.

    • @TheJoeMan

      Jita kyoei. Mutual welfare and benefit. He's supporting his uke not trying to bury him. If you've been taught differently, you've been taught incorrectly.

    • @sirdeetoh
      @sirdeetoh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      This is the classic way or the academic way, as you prefer, to perform the technique. After throwing the opponent you must release the lapel, and pull the sleeve up, this way uke falls and hit floor in a safer way, he can rotate the body to absorb the impact with the hand. arm and shoulder instead of fall down on his back. Once uke is on the floor tori must grab uke's sleeve with both hands, and adopt a position similar to jigo hon tai to show he controls the throw.
      On a real fight where you need to neutralize the opponent the best way is make him fall on his bare back, but this is quite dangerous while training, so safer ways are used.
