- We've heard that the ability to retain your consciousness after death is a power only available through the light side of the Force. But a new Star Wars book has hinted that the dark side might have some tricks hidden up its sleeve to get around that. Let's discuss!

Well the Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural...
BattleUp Saber is it possible to learn this power?
Not from a Jedi...
Like commenting on every star wars video I watch?
You ever hear the tragedy of Darth plagueis the wise...
Devin the bi jedi No?
In *Legends* they can but *Canon* has a different rule.
George Lucas argued that during the production of the Clone Wars TV series that the Sith should not be able to.
He explained that after someone affiliated with the dark side dies, the spirit goes into limbo. ( A strange contradiction considering we see Nightsister ghosts in Star Wars Rebels)
This explains why Palpatine was seeking immortality.
I think the Nightsisters generally use a take on the Force outside the light/dark we all know, or some other power. Alternatively, they seem to act similar to the spirit in this story, in that they haunt a specific location and cannot leave it.
I think what we are seeing is that limbo state. Not apart of the physical world, but not apart of the cosmic Force. I think Dark Side users still become one with the Force, just not the same way Jedi do.
Joe Kerr Thats possibility
Indeed. This is also why the scenes of the Mortis Arc where the Son communed with the spirits of Darth Bane and Darth Revan were cut, because those characters shouldn’t have any consciousness after death. Bane’s appearance in the final episode of the series is simply an illusion set up by the Sith on their homeworld to scare off any unworthy visitors.
SoLinkSmash I never liked how they thought that was good enough of an idea to implement and animate. If Filoni actually did any research at all into those characters he should know that Darth Bane didn't succeed into becoming a Force ghost when he was killed by his apprentice, Zannah. And Darth Revan had redeemed himself at the time of that episode, so he shouldn't be there either (his whole history after the KOTOR games is pretty weird).
Awesome. I the answer was obvious before watching the video based on what we've heard from GL and others. Definitely more nuance here than I expected.
Thanks, with pleasure *laughing emoji, laughing emoji*
Being presumably born in 1987 and trying to take shots at TH-camrs. Oh my.
While I personally don't like the fact that Force Ghosts are now something exclusive to the light side, there is a precedent for what Alex is saying. In the Old EU, every Sith spirit encountered seemed to be tethered to a specific Dark Side location (Exar Kun was tied to his temple on Yavin 4, as was Naga Sadow, Freedon Nadd remained on Onderon even after Exar Kun found him, etc.) The only instance I can remember of a Sith spirit leaving their tether was when Naga Sadow's spirit possessed Eison Gynt's body and travelled to Coruscant. After Gynt's death, Sadow's spirit was exorcised and returned to Yavin.
I like the idea that Sith can become ghosts but they are trapped, a tortured specter trapped in some kind of hellish purgatory. With only the most notable be able to hold any kind of lucidness (like your examples) while the rest end up like the crazed ghosts thinking they are still living their glory days in the Dark Temple from SWTOR
Giant nerd love that.
Eating ghosts is fun
I think this theory makes sense because while the Jedi can manifest into a spirit and guide people they care about the dark side are stuck to one specific place that has meaning to them because they haunt it like an actual ghost
I think that we need to stop calling Jedi who are able to manifest them selves physically "Force Ghosts" and start calling them "Force Spirits" due to the fact that there is a difference between a "spirit" such as Obi Wan and Yoda, and a "ghost" such as Darth Bane in the clone wars. The difference being while, Yoda and Obi Wan can manifest them selves at will wherever the want, Dart Bane was only able to manifest himself at his tomb. So in my opinion a Force Ghost can only manifest around a specific object or location, a Force Spirit can appear anywhere he or she chooses.
Aaron Haselrig that bane was an illusion of the dark side apparently
Well - that was Yoda´s assumption... and maybe just he vanquished Bane on strenght of that conviction.
Nah, those are interchangeable. And the bane you speak of was an illusion. I did see a toy for obi wan that referred to him as a a force spirit as you say but most people are accustomed to saying force ghost
Yoda assumed Bane was just illusion... given the power Yoda wielded even that might have been enough to surpress Bane.
Paerigos eh, I think they would've said something if that was the case
I think the case here, is similar to what appears in the two Kotor games when you visit the korriban sith tombs. Dark side spirits can "survive" after death but only in an area strong in the dark side, and usually only for a limited amount of time.
In Rebels the spirits of the Nightsisters where trapped in that cave and could only leave once they possessed Sabine and Kanan's bodies.
I dig it, this opens up the door to all force users, even light side ones, who didn't make their trip to Jedi mecca and meet the force priestesses to become force ghosts. And honestly I wouldn't mind a creepy apparition of snoke haunting Kylo Ren in 9, just whispers, or whatever.
1:55 I mean if Rian Johnson can give Luke new force powers because of stuff included in "The Jedi Path" book, I think we can expect basically anything at this point.
So judging by what we've seen, Sith clinging to life act a lot like Horcruxes, specifically Voldemort's, tied to an object and has the ability to twist a user like what was shown in the lates Annual, Lando miniseries and Rebels
Do remember that we have seen other Dark Side ghosts in canon: The Nightsister Spirits on Dathomir in Rebels!
And they followed the same rules you brought up: They were tied to one location around the shrine and couldn't leave the actual cave. It lends a lot of credence that Dark Side spirits in canon are less tranquil ghosts and more revenants/wraiths/liches that are tied to a location or dark side artifact. Hell, this is really what most Sith ghosts were in Legends too.
Sure they can, just ask Darth Marr.
Darth Marr became a force ghost in SWTOR
In canon there already were the Dathmir witches' spirits that tried to haunt Ezra. I guess it's something of the same type.
So basically: Jedi spirits are free, Sith spirits are trapped. I think this fits well within the Star Wars universe.
Just because the Force Ghost is a Lightside Ability doesn’t exactly mean that members devoted to the Dark Side of the Force couldn’t use it. My best example would be the Sith Inquisitor Story Arc from “Star Wars: the Old Republic”. Apparently your character will discover that they’re actually from a lineage & that your ancestor wants to keep you alive, at least long enough to leave a legacy, & would go as far as visiting you to a place they’re not bound to.
In conclusion, assuming that goodness & selflessness are key aspects towards the lightside of the force, then its very possible for darkside practitioners to be Force ghosts IF they’re noble & selfless.
Well u can become force ghost only by surrendering to the will of the force (a very important jedi trait qui gon was the only one to do that, later Yoda did it) as it is a manifestation of the force (qui gon said that).
So yeah only jedi can become force ghost.
Technically disagree, @@ashishverma2008. I recommend that you play that MMORPG that I’ve mentioned earlier & then think it over. I don’t believe that Jedi are the only ones who can do so. Its like saying that only those who’re elected into office are above their own rules & laws…
@@nickvinsable3798 only light sider have shown to posses the ability.
In the clone wars it is specifically mentioned through priestess that only light siders can do so.
If u technically understand what I a force ghost u will see the logic easily of why only light siders have that abilities.
Precisely, @@ashishverma2008. Just because somebody was born into Sith’s society doesn’t guarantee that they’re going to end up on the dark side nor does being born into Jedi’s society guarantee that they’re not going to fall into the dark side. Thus, aside from gaming mechanics, we can easily speculate that Sith who’ve devoted themselves to the Light Side & the Sith Code could become far more powerful than those who’ve committed to the Sith Code & the Dark Side OR the Jedi Code & the Light Side (pondering how powerful a Jedi could be IF they devoted themselves to the Jedi Code & the Dark Side)…
Darth Marr became a force ghost
Not sure if he was a force ghost or just a powerful sith spirit. But even if he was a force ghost than doesn't brake the rules. Marr was different from other sith. He was selfless and always did what was best for the empire and not just what was best for him. Stupendous wave made a good video explaining if a dark sider could become a force ghost and how they could do it. th-cam.com/video/wxn2M40gVbg/w-d-xo.html here it is watch the whole video and don't just judge it by the title.
marvin nanno i'll surely watch it
Lots of sith in legends became force ghosts Lord Kaan, Marka Ragnos , Palpatine ,Exar Kun, Ajunta pall, Naga Sadow etc. the list goes on. Cannon just has different rules on the subject
Darth Oculus Lord Kaan's "ghost" was only Bane's vision, the rest of them were spirits bound to their tombs
you also see sith spirits on Yavin 4 in the different caves
this channel deserves way more
1:28 I'm surprised they didn't hire Doctor Aphra. That's her whole schtick!
2:59 That has always been the rules of the Dark Side spirits. If you analyze all of the Sith Lord spirits who had retained consciousness after death, they are all bound to a place or an object. Korribaan was known to have several spirits in its Valley of the Dark Lords. The Muur Talisman housed the spirit of Karness Muur and had the ability to transform humans into rakghouls and control them through the Dark Side. Sort of like an amped up version of the One Ring. You can compare this to the Nightsister spirits seen in _Rebels_ where they are contained in a sarcophagus and can't leave the tomb or cave or wherever they were. This is in contrast to Jedi Force Ghosts who are not attached to any one place or thing and can appear and communicate any way they choose.
It was believed back in Legends that the spirits of Sith Lords who didn't retain their consciousness would pass on into the Netherworld of the Force much like other Force-sensitive beings.
I mean some Sith ghosts were able to appear in other places, like Lord Kallig, but again usually they're one of the most powerful of their time.
There's a very simple way to reconcile this with the "only Jedi can become Force Ghosts" thing:
The Jedi were wrong.
I see that you have not been watching Star Wars Rebels. We see Sith Ghosts in one episode.
Pretty cool! Now I want to read this book. Thanks again, Alex. Happy 4th to you and Mollie. 🙂
I wouldn't mind Snoke reappearing in Episode 9 as the dark side equivalent of a Force ghost -- e.g. an evil spirit who inhabits a new host body.
gokinsmen What if he already was? What if the snoke in that film was a withering host?
That's another thought I had. His line about "I cannot be beaten, I cannot be betrayed" makes a lot more sense in that context. You can kill his body...but he just comes back in another. I think it would be a great twist for JJ to pull off in Ep9.
gokinsmen God, I hope he does that.
I thought the same thing..would be awesome to see something similar!!!
I'm a little surprised you mentioned nothing about Kanan. It was eluded to that he was able to retain his consciousness for a short time after death in a kind of "spirit" form, even if not as a proper Force ghost (we see him comforting Hera and likely speak to Ezra through the wolf). Personally, I would like to believe that there may not be concrete "rules" about one retaining consciousness for a time after death, kind of similarly to how travel through Hyperspace is really just a storytelling tool (it always takes just as long as it needs to, etc.). The process to become a Force ghost I feel is something more concrete and something that is probably only accessible to users of the Light Side, but maybe the Force sometimes grants individuals some amount of control through the Force by its own will before they truly pass on. That was always my impression after seeing the ending of Rebels, at least.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Nightsister ghosts we see in Rebels, as they seem to have many of the same limitations the Enchantress does in this book.
I'd still love to see Ghost!Ventress. She's got Nightsister juju on her side.
My understanding is dark side users spirits can 'haunt' a specific location. I think that is what is going on in the book.
Do you think it could maybe be something like the Nightsister spirits?
and I find myself watching this again on today of all days.....can't think why
I just follow what Palpatine said to Anakin when he revealed he was Sidious, to understand the greater aspect, you can't just stick with the narrow view of the Jedi...
Can the Darklighters Become Force Ghosts?
-Biggs Wars E-x(wing)-plained.
Please make a video on star wars the new droid army.
It might be the first new canon mention of a Sith ghost, but in Legends there are many occurrences of people meeting Sith long after they died. For instance in the old RPG computer game 'Knights of the Old Republic' we meet a Sith ghost in a tomb on Korriban, there was the Star Wars comics 'Vector' where the ghost of Karness Muur lived on trying to gain life through the people wearing the cursed bracelet he made. So we have many events showing Sith living on after death, but yes, maybe with not such freedom as Light Side users seem to have, lol.
I feel like there’s a difference already established in canon between maintaining one’s consciousness after death through achieving balance and training to be united with the Force, and manifesting one’s will after death through other beings. For instance, Kanan didn’t become a Force ghost after his death, but he was able to manifest his will through the wolf Dume and teach Ezra one last lesson before he passed on to finally become one with the Force. This means that for some people, they could be in a purgatory-like state after death before they fully become one with the Force, with their will manifested by animals or other ways (this could also be the case with Morai being the vessel for the Daughter).
Is possible to have both stories without saying that the Force Priestesses lie to Yoda, here is why:
A ghost (similar to poltergeist) if you analyzed from several religions is a soul or energy with attachments to objects, places or even persons, they're have not knowledge they had died they only focus their energy to the object, place or person their attached. This is how SW handles the illusions of Darth Bane for example as spooky and limited not able to free themselves from where they're attached.
A Force Ghost is different, is like a Saint or an Angel visiting someone to give guidance or pass some knowledge SW call the Force Ghost because it sounds cool, not because they're truly ghosts.
So what I'm trying to say is Dark Side afterlife manifestations are what we call ghost in regular world and Force Ghosts are something more complex.
I REALLY like the idea of Sith and certain powerful dark side users being able to haunt a certain location as a phantom. It's far more of a corruption of the physical realm rather than a consciousness able to leave the Force and appear to Force sensitive beings, similar to Yoda, Obi Wan, Qui Gon and Anakin. Either way, I find it cool that Chewie got paired up with an Indie inspired character!
Yes! He’s wearing my favorite Star Wars shirt!
I'm tellin ya man I have seen this before. It may have been from another TH-camr but it had the same title and thumbnail... still a cool video.
I think this might have answered on of my most pressing questions
No, they cant because Sith consistently crave power. To be a force ghost, you must accept the force and be tranquil.
Darth Stalker, but they aren't Force ghosts. They're more of a traditional haunted house kinda ghost. Think of it like a spiritual limbo. Not apart of the physical world, but not apart of the spiritual world either (cosmic Force).
Craving power would be an excellent way to become a force ghost. Using that want, that greed and the emotions of losing the power one has achieved before death to suborning hold onto anything and anchor themselves into the earthly realm through vitriol emotions to keep a hold of that power and not lose it to death. It's perfect for the Sith.
William Washington doesn't count anymore, homie.
But the night sisters did it right? Not sith but dark side users?
Parmesan Stark good point on the Night Sisters!
William Washington the legend of the Valley of the Jedi had a bunch of Jedi/Sith spirits trapped within it, but they weren't conscious. As soon as the seal was broken Kyle released all the spirits.
In my headcanon, largely based on the Legends material, yes, they can. Kinda. While the light-siders can become "one with the Force" maintaining a certain amount of their old self for some time (Force ghosts), dark-siders can anchor their beings to phisical objects (like fantasy's Lich), and feed on the Force for survive in this world. In Legends, the spirts of dead Sith Lords like Marka Ragnos even speak of some type of possible ritual of reincarnation, so I assume even that can be possible.
The Enchantress saying she couldn't be at rest because she didn't teach an apprentice would explain why the Sith were always teaching apprentices despite this seemingly being a bad idea. She's very similar to the Sith Force ghosts in the Old Republic era. They're constantly in pain, slowly going insane, and tethered to their tombs. Even in Legends, Marr was the only Sith ghost who wasn't in pain and tethered. And Marr got to become a traditional Force Ghost because as he died, he had the serenity and sense of duty of a Jedi.
Even in Legends continuity, a lot of spirits of Sith and other dark siders seem to be trapped within objects or places while the Force ghosts of Jedi and other light siders seem to be able to travel across the galaxy.
Star Wars Legend KotOR featured Sith Ghosts who basically were all mad. I like that idea, too. They're clinging to life, but not real consciousness like light siders.
I actually think this makes sense. The Dark Side is very focused on oneself or one thing, its very selfish, while the light is cosmcially compassionate. Thus, I can see a dark side force ghost being trapped while a light side force ghost moves freely.
Nice Video :)
While intriguing, I agree with George Lucas that it makes a lot more sense for dark-siders not to be able to become Force ghosts. It explains why most of them seem obsessed with staying alive at any cost (Palpatine particularly), while most Jedi don't seem to balk at sacrificing themselves. It also further highlights why Anakin's fear of his loved ones' death could be manipulated so effectively to turn him to the dark side.
I think the idea that Force Ghosts are only a lightside ability is wrong. Granted I haven't read all the books. I think that some darkside practitioners can do it if they were to take the time to learn how. I think the reason we don't see more DS Force Ghosts is because most of DS users are more interested in what they are doing while alive and not planning for when they die. Great video as always
Wow I will have to read the book then! Sounds pretty interesting also I want to read it to have my own interpretation about the ghost/illusion of the Priestess.
Consciousness tied to objects was in star wars legacy. When cade encountered a suth lord tied to a bracelet.
This reminds me of the Nightsister ghosts, in that they can't leave the Nightsister temple on Dathomir. Also, the Nightsister ghosts never really struck me as fully aware, instead being merely ravenous spirits, seeking bodies like Kanan and Sabine.
I like the idea of dark side users not being able to be force ghosts in the same way light side users can. Something it always bothered me in Legends was that both sides were practically the same, just with force abilities with different colors (just as the green light force lightning). Being able to become one with the force and still being able to manifest one's concience is something that adds more meaning to the path of the light side.
Best legends example of a sith force ghost: Darth Marr
imo this all definitely strengthens the speculation that kylo was possibly, literally communing with some sort of dark side force ghost of anakin skywalker in tfa. Maybe JJ/Lucasfilm just weren’t ready to yet reveal this sorta challenging of cannon understanding (as we know it) of what a force ghost really is and can be. TFA and TLJ just seem like bare character/plot renderings of some of lucas’ sequel trilogy ideas. More and more I feel in the camp of thought that lucasfilm/the story group are quietly withholding some truly monumental changes/alterations to these ideas we have of what the the force and the saga of Star Wars is really about. I’ve honestly not even lost hope that in its own way JJ’s 9 will serve some delivery of what George had been interested in centering the sequel trilogy about. I just think lucasfilm/jj all rightly assumed that the safer bet was to make films much more mirroring the styles of ANH and TESB and then a third film delving all the way into these backing philosophies and reveals in maybe different aesthetics more closely relating to the prequels, and also new territory not yet seen. I just wonder how long it’ll be ... lol
Ancient siths can become force ghosts but normally they stay in their sith temple or exist through some object they have constructed. But in Star Wars the Old Republic we saw them reach far across the galaxy as force ghosts for a limited time.
I think in order for a Dark Side user to retain their consciousness after death, they have to bind their spirit to physical item or location as an anchor. The reason being is that the Dark Side is focused on The Material World and This Life.
Meanwhile Jedi Force Ghosts can manifest anywhere because the Light Side is focused on letting go of attachments and releasing oneself from The Material World.
Basically in my opinion ; Jedi are like Gnostics while Sith are staunch Materialists.
It'd be interesting to see some kind of dark side lich
The lack of Sith/Dark Side ghosts is something that I definitely miss in new-canon.
I think is because she pour soo much of her knowledge into the book that some of herself was commited as well, the desire to pass such knowledge might also be a factor, after all the dark side is greedy so all that matters is the will of the user, and this will to pass it on may as well be a cathalyst to imbue the book with some of her soul augmented by the place where the book was... maybe :P
It’s not the first dark side spirit seen in Canon.
What about the Nightsister ghosts seen in Star Wars Rebels?
Joshua Tupper I don’t think you necessarily need to be Sith in order to not be force ghost.
It’s simply those affiliated with Dark Side who cannot be one with the force or at least that’s the rule George Lucas enforced during the time of the Clone Wars TV series.
I'm thinking it's more of an echo... so, an illusion more or less... tied to that book maybe, but probably connected directly to that large creature she existed in for so long. If the creature is still alive, absorbed in the Dark Side, then it could probably hold an echo of consciousness... or have the ability to mimic an entity that survived so long within it. Perhaps using such tricks was part of how it attempted to draw "moths" into its "flame"?
I think dark siders should be able to become spirits/ghosts as well, only a tormented soul so to speak. Similar to the ghost in Scrooge. It would be a way for fan favorite dark side characters to live on in canon and make for interesting stories as well. Maybe every time one appears, the force tries to drag them back into their "hell"and the ghost is in pain trying to fight it to be in the real world.
Hi Alex where r u going to be at Atlanta comic con
It is clinging to the ego/self that makes it die with the body. Ironically, by learning to let go of greed and the need to serve the self, one's 'self' gets expanded out into the network of the Force, and this is how one's identity persists after the death of the body. But the Dark Side is all about selfishness, so this keeps the ego small and isolated. So this is an impossible feat for them. That's why you cannot have Force Ghosts of the type we see in Yoda, Obi-Wan, etc. The spiritual residue of Sith Ghosts could be a different kind of thing, imprinted on a location, item, holocron, etc. Maybe they're not even having a conscious experience but are just a collection of active memories with the 'person' gone (like the image of Jor-El in the Fortress of Solitude).
Either A) the voice wasn't what it said it was, or B) "The Darkness" she mentioned could've been this creature she was living in. Maybe it absorbed her essence in some way.
I think she is really there - and that while the Force Priestess's view that becoming one with the Force, and retaining your sentience, is only possible through the Light side by letting go of everything physical is logical (especially to a Jedi), the Sith's outlook has always been more material and self-centered. Perhaps if the Jedi can live on after death by fully embracing their philosophy, the Sith found a way to do something similar. Instead of detatching themselves from the world, they cling to it so hard that even after their body decays and dies, their spirit is still clinging onto the physical world. That would be why they seem to be stuck - and perhaps with time, they do fade and be absorbed by the Darkness that they've spent their lives chasing, but even after those artifacts still have some residual spirit left on them. Hence why the Masks and such can be corrupting.
Cues from Indy? Is there a force bullwhip?
A librarian/Indiana Jones-type character? Well gosh, now I have to read this.
I think this falls in line with the legends interpretation of a Sith force ghost, more of a haunting/possesion rather than a guardian spirit. Think the Muur Talisman, Freedon Nadd, Naga Sadow or the possessed people in the temple on dromund kaas. They don't particularly seem happy with their life after death and it could be assumed that they live some sort of tortured existence. I would think that's why sith lords like Darth andeddu and Darth Scabrous sought eternal life through other means.
Maybe not a Force ghost but they should be able to become a regular old ghost. Well, an angry powerful regular old ghost.
In Rebels, we hear the Presence's voice come of the sith holocron. It's possible she was able to preserve part of her conscious essence and soul into it like how Voldermort put 7 parts of his into objects and living beings like Harry and Nagini.
That's a different case. In the EU, and in the Disney canon I assume, holocrons have what are called Gatekeepers, which act as knowledge repositories, sharing all that the specific Sith or Jedi knows of certain force talents, sort of a simulacrum of the holocron's creator but not their actual spirit.
What about the cave in Dagobah? May it be related? Like, the dark side stays in one place once it's dead
Its like once u pass a certain pwer level in the force you can extend ur existence but It's like death to a jedi is true freedom. While death to a sith is a eternity sentence in solitary confinement.
If you're right, even Darth Bane may have been a ghost haunting his own tomb and only could manifest if other being want to, that's depressing.
Well if she is real than she isn't a force ghost. She's a dark side spirit and they did exist in legends to. They were very common among the sith and were called sith spirit. They are sith that died but threw their anger and hate forced their spirit to remain. They are a lot weaker than force ghosts and their power is very limited at elast that's how they were in legends. They were often bound to their tombs or some objects and when they went away from thos eplaces it took a hug toll on their power so it does make sense if the enchantress in this story is a dark side spirit.
Video Idea: Why did Darth Maul only have/use one blade on his lightsaber in the Clone Wars Series
I’d argue that sith-Dark side users can become force ghosts as in SWTOR’s expansion Knights of the Fallen Empire Darth Marr leader of the empire five years after his death returns as a force ghost working with Jedi grand master Satele Shan to help train the player.
I know this is legends continuity but the clone wars show is part of legends and canon in which Darth Banes spirit appears to Yoda and spirits of dead sigh lords on korriban tutored Darth Krayt, and Darth Vectivus’ ghost resided in his asteroid base, Add to that Alex’s examples, the story he’s summarized, and the numerous legends elements that have returned to canon this year alone I’d say it’s definitely possible.
Well, since the Enchantress wasn't Sith, she was a force sensitive person that simply wanted to survive, I'd say she was there.
If the creature was that deeply rooted in the force, it would act like a force nexus of sorts. And we know those allow those who are strong enough or in tune enough with the Force to manifest themselves. Outside of such areas, I don't think it would be possible.
She was versed enough in the force to basically stop her aging process while inside, and had she had formal training, probably could have maintained that at least for brief periods without needing to return to the confines of the beast.
Perhaps one strong enough to overpower the creatures ability to take back the energy someone took to sustain themselves could emerge stronger, effectively pausing their lifespan while they studied and planned. Maybe build a house and a workshop. Set up an antenna so you could keep up on the Galaxy via the Holonet, then when the time was right and all those who knew of you were dead, strike.
Honestly it seems like the perfect hideout for an adept dark sider, or a prison for one strong enough to survive, but not enough to retain what it took from the creature. Not gonna kill you, just gonna leave you in here forever. You won't age or die unless you try to leave.. K thx bye now!
Sounds awfully similar to the Nightsister apparitions seen in the Rebels episode 'Visions and Voices'. Where again, they're apparently tied to a physical artefact (the alter) and limited to a very specific place (the cave.) Could also be along similar lines to how in the comics, Rur's consciousness (or an copy of it) was unnaturally preserved.
A common thread with all of these seems to be some kind of physical link to the material realm and the "spirit" being stuck in some kind of limbo state, unable to really affect much and seemingly cut off from the cosmic force.
So the idea of bring back a version of Exar Kun or the other ancient Sith Lords as "ghosts" into canon is very doable, so long as they stick to these restrictions.
Indeed, it seems like a very Sith thing to do to somehow try and extend their existence beyond death, like somehow incorporating holocron technology into their sarcophagi to keep themselves around after their bodies perish. But it never works and they all ended up trapped like this. Which would suddenly make the Valley of the Dark Lords much more macabre if all those tombs contained the crazed, trapped spirits of long dead Sith. I could also see it as a possibility if the whole idea of those tombs to begin with was an attempt by some Lord or Emperor to continue ruling the Sith from beyond the grave, but their apprentices betrayed them and sealed them all away. Only keeping them around on the off chance that their preserved knowledge could be used to some advantage (like say, *not* being prematurely shoved in a sarcophagi by the next generation of apprentices! ;) )
Darth Marr became a force ghost upon death in Star Wars the Old Republic
I disagree that this is the first canon dark side spirit seen: The Sith spirits Yoda encounters on Moraband, the Nightsister spirits in Rebels (and potentially Mother Talzin herself). I'd further argue that these spirits follow a completely different principle from the Force Ghosts , each following the core principles of the Dark and Light Side respectively.
The Light Side is all about attuning yourself to the flow of the Force, to become one with it; a Force Ghost is the ultimate form of that: a person who is so in tune with the flow of the Force that even when they become part of the Cosmic Force, they're individuality does not get subsumed as they are already in tune with it.
The Dark Side on the other hand is about the amplification of the self and shaping the Force around yourself, rather than shaping yourself around the Force, including prolonging your physical existence beyond the natural life span by syphoning off the Living Force of others. Dark side spirits are not the people themselves maintained within the Cosmic Force, but an imprint or echoes of the self left within the Living Force. That's why they are tied to specific objects or places: areas in physical space where the Force has been permanently twisted by the imposition of the will of Dark Side beings. There have been many lesser forms of this in canon: Leia encountering an imprint of Maul on Naboo, Sidious making Maul experience the echoes of the Sith's deaths on Malachor, the corrupting Sith artifacts in the Lando comic and Aftermath trilogy, etc.
Hey Alex, what about Darth Nihilus? The Lore Master (AKA Fact Free at the time,) said in his top 10 Sith Lord video that after his defeat, his spirit remained alive, so he was able to become a force ghost on Korriban. So what do you think about that? 😊😊😊
Slight quibble. I just read it. She wasn’t inside the beast. It was in a chasm with green mist like a nightsister. She found a cave next to the chasm and turned it into a temple with a statue of the best as the entrance. Also K2 and Cassian were there to keep the book from Palpatine.
Jedi Search, 1994, and Tales of the Jedi, 1994. Dark Side force ghosts have been around for decades.
Most Sith seem to chan their essence to material means - like holocrons, temples and artifacts, but they can't freely roam like jedi ghosts.
pretty sure the guy who wrote the chewbacca book was the origami yoda guy
Although they are no longer canon (possibly), Exar Kun, Darth Marr, Naga Sadow, Freedom Nad became force ghosts after death.
I would argue that The Immortal Rur was a dark side spirit that we met
It could be the dark side had actually been influenced by her and her meditations. That the Force itself has become like her, at least in that place and for a moment in time.
We also saw Nightsister spirits in Rebels
Alex I have always wondered what happened to lieutenant list after he was framed and arrested for being the the rebel spy
How about the Night Sisters? Maybe this Enchantress has some magic as well as dark side force powers...
Well, The Presence in Rebels' Sith holocron seems a similar deal.
Maybe Yoda just lied and darkside ghosts are real, he just did not want to scar the kids. lol
There is some question of what is a "Force ghost" - in the Dark side its likely possible to force onself an Imprint into the local "Force" field... being bind to place, object or person. Thus those ghosts would be significantly limited in what they could do and where to manifest.
(like in case of Darth Bane - it is a phylosophical question if it is meerely an imprint or actual continuation of consciousness - likely it makes no difference to the imprint... in fact maybe Bane was actually vanquished just by Yoda refusing to acknowledge his existence - as Yoda by that imposed his perception of reality on the Force...
Maybe - if yoda actually considered a question if something of Bane could have survived he would not vanquish him so easily... then again maybe someone with more knowledge in particular was of Darkside could survive in this manner to a point even Yodas "arrogance" could not supress him/her.
(I would say such person could actually have more power localy but none globaly)
also another truth - there is just one Sith in Legends who EVER became truly one with the Force who could manifest at will...
Darth Marr - and that was mostly because he simply refused to vanish, and died fighting to the end for something else then himself... the idea of Sith Empire and Sith way of life... at that point he essentially surrendered his own ego, his own interests in favour of something else - The Empire.
His "my flesh was destroyed, but not my reason for beeing" (the reason was The Empire) and "All my life I have dismissed the Jedi code, but in the end I found one truth in it: "There is no death, there is only the Force... and IT HAS A PLAN!"
thus... I would say - anything is possible and it would actually make sense - there is no reason why Sith ghosts could not exists - its just something else then "becoming eternaly one with the Force and beeing in Peace... its simply not something most Sith would find appetizing anyway.
In kotor we can meet a dark side spirit on sith planet with pyramids.
Well if Robot Chicken is to be believed...
#Q&A, do you think that Episode 9 will see the recanonization of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances and the MC90 Class Star Cruiser?
It’s really stupid/weird how the emperor himself sends Chewbacca but aside from that seems like a good story.
what about those that call on both the light and dark sides of the force? Could those people become one with the force and manifest as force ghosts? I feel like as long as a force sensitive learned the ritual or dedicated themselves to meditation or whatever, they could. I really like some of the things the Grey Jedi taught/believed. The force is both light and dark, a true master could learn and use both.
We know that in legends sith can manifest as ghosts but I dont think we have seen it in new cannon yet. (correct me if I am wrong)
