- I'm back and today I wanted to talk about the epic zombie manga... I Am A Hero ! This is my first zombie manga and my first ever Kengo Hanazawa manga so i just couldn't wait to share my thoughts with you guys.

I legit thought the ending was just him being a zombie fantasizing what would happened if he would survive a zombie apocalypse just like in his mangas
Turns out i was gravely wrong and my level of relief is immeasurable!!!
What an underrated gem.
This series absolutely makes my top 10 list too, I just finished reading it and am still contemplating that ending. I picked up "I am a hero" after reading "Gakkou gurashi" aka School Live (which i wholeheartedly recommend if you haven't read it.

About I Am A Hero:
I’m honestly glad that Hideo and Hiromi didn’t end up together. Nearing the end, I was sure that there would be an ending where their feelings overcame the virus, causing her to become separeted from the hive and human again. But it would be hard to call what the pair had love, it was more like they were desperate to love someone, anyone, when they thought they were close to death.
At this point in his development too, Hideo hadn’t progressed enough to have earned that happy, cliched ending with Hiromi either. He only deserved a reprieve from his isolation once he looked at the little girl, Hii-chan, and overcame his prejudice to become her loving father. It felt like satisfying Character growth to me
What you said makes a lot of sense. I love how real this manga feels sometimes, I honestly think it could've gone both ways with Hiromi though, sometimes love is messy sometimes is doesn't make sense especially In a world like that and I'm a fan of that kind of relationship where it's not something perfect or the chemistry is messy. People and things change over time and I think they would figure it out and both grow as the years went on. But the ending as it was is alright and I'm fine with it.
unique zombie manga with a complete cohesive story, 10/10
not complete really. The mangaka is making an extension last arc to explore some lose end

is the movie worth to watch? bc I kinda wanna start with the movie first then the manga. but I'm afraid the movie will ruined the manga
It's really good. I just read it in it's entirety a few hours ago. Over 260 chapters in a few days, just listening to zombie music playlists on repeat. I'm starting to feel like there is a zombie apocalypse outside right now. The immersion..
Great review of this excellent series! I really enjoyed my time reading it. At first, I didn’t like the ending but after I thought about it and let it sit, I actually liked it! I can’t wait for Under Ninja!!

I had actually read a little of I am hero a few years ago, I unfortunately dropped it but seeing the release of an epilogue about 5 years later made me want to read it lol. Was an amazing ride.

I just got the 5th omnibus volume and I'm reading #3 right now, it's really good so far and I can't wait to get every volume. Probably going to collect the rest of over the next couple months!

I am a Hero is a life changing story. Hideo finding his place in a world devoid of humans is so ironic. As well as the story is a great read for any Man that feels stuck or weak. I am a Hero taught me how to find the courage within myself.

Probably something I pick up a Japanese set for and read online cos the way Dark Horse's reprint promise suggests this series ain't getting a full reprint which is cringe but also very in character for dark horse. Been wanting to read this for a while but OOP collecting is not something I wanna get involved in anymore than I already have lmao. Killer video as always

I read it and I’m proud to finish it, I remember when it went kinda hiatus here and there, 32 now and boi it was a gem when I was in my mid late twenties when it finished

May i suggest Kokou No Hito from Shinichi Sakamoto more realistic (kinda sport/psychologocal) manga but with similiar amazing art :)

Could we ever get an anime adaption of I am a hero? Or at the very least a deluxe edition of the manga or English editions of the spin-offs

@@theshermantanker7043 it's basically just the first 4 omnibus books I'm talking about an anime adaptation. At most 1 season or 2 seasons they can add in the spin offs to get to the 2 season mark
The Belltower chapters were the single greatest side story I've ever seen in a work.
I finished it last night, It was amazing, but I hate how many loose ends the author left.

Before starting apology for English, of all the reviews, criticism and analysis of this great manga without a doubt your video is the best, the way you approached different points of the work, the Japanese society in an apolipsis and its "strange" behavior for We face a tremendous catastrophe, the zombies so special that this work has, the protagonist who is not a Rambo, is not a Gary Stu, does not have a harem, is an average person who has virtues and defects and that makes him special, never I'm going to forget when he defended Hiromi from some guys at that time the guy became serious and rude, the secondary characters like the nurse who is my favorite female character in the play and the other characters who like the group where the head of Hideo, I love the art ufff, apart from the Japanese they seem Japanese hahaha, I really love their drawing.
NOTICE I'M GOING TO COMMENT ON THE END, that's why finish watching this great video and finish reading the manga if you didn't.
I did not know that the author's father died, obviously it affected the creator and therefore the story as you said, maybe the end would be different or different and maybe he wanted to finish it before, I respect that, but I did not like the end, it is more Before the end, several things already happened that when I read I said, something is strange.
There are very few series and movies that I like SO MUCH to the point of licking his balls to say they are perfect or almost perfect and this manga is not one of them, the story I feel like it falls when the nurse and nothing happens and the main character On top of it it looks like the creator lies down with the minor a scene that I found quite uncomfortable to see and without much sense, then apparently the zombies have an extraterrestrial origin or something like that, which on top of it is not explored much and to my taste it is wrong, Hiromi is the "chosen one" of the zombies and on top of that she can control them, the cook who was fat and somewhat older, out of nowhere becomes skinny and younger because some kind of zombie swallowed her and then spat her out, Hideo who was left alone and half crazy in the style I am a legend but without a dog. In my opinion, this great manga has one of the most disappointing endings that I saw in my life, not that I read so many, but no series and film disappointed me so much in the end as this manga. I give it a 7/10 if I count from the beginning to the end, if I take it from the beginning until the nurse finds out that I am pregnant, I give it an 8.5 / 10. Greetings from Argentina.

If it wasn't for the ending and for what Suzuki and Hayakari did in the cabin on the beach towards the final of the story, I would have liked the manga. But because of that I started to hate.

I have volumes 1-5 and the rest of the series is just impossible to find for a good price. It seems that these are permanently out of print??? dark horse sucks lol. I do absolutely love this manga.. I love the idea of a realistic zombie manga set in japan. As you said, it’s so interesting to see how different the japanese culture reacts to the events that take place in this story. one example of this would be how illegal guns are in japan. a traditional american zombie story has TONS of guns. in japan these ideals are extremely different.

This manga creepy
You have finished reading it, right? It had so many plot holes! Yes there are story lines that should have good cliff hangers but "I am a Hero" was completely different! SPOILER ALERT:
1. The "Queen/Princess" Zombie
2. The Hive
3. The Huddle
4. Ending? What ending? Hideo didn't want his ending. If he had a fourth-wall power, he'd come out of the manga and one-punch Kengo Hanazawa right in the spleen.
5. It started well, but it took a huge nose dive. It's like, reading from Chapter 1-9, the intensity, the horror, the excitement is getting higher and higher. Then here comes chapter 10, and Kengo was like "My manga has been successful so far, now it's time toshit on it.", His manga creator companions were like "Why?"
Kengo: "Meh"
Also, I just made a comment comparing "I am a Hero" to "Lost."
A lot of these things didn't make any sense. I'd rather read and watch Koiz-Kaze all over again over this.
Boku no Pico is looking better than this one as well
Hideo never became the Hero he wanted to be. He never got to have a GF/Life partner or save the people he promised to save. He was left alone, because Hiromi wanted him to suffer a lonely life, because he shot her Monster Unification form.
Being the "last man alive" Hideo resorted to speaking to inanimate objects. He was framed as a bad person by the end of the manga by his imaginary friend/subconscious.
The "unification" conversation that Hiromi was having with the other unified brains didn't make sense, unless the unified brains were trying to trick her and everyone that unified with the monster. It says to Hiromi that "All will become one", that includes thoughts, regrets, dreams, memories, which means conflicting ideas will also be unified. How is that possible? How can you unify a "yes" and a "no" at the same time, e.g. the unification process, im sure there are people in there that didnt want to be in that predicament, however, after becoming zombies, they don't suddenly realize that they like being zombies, they think its good, like being heavily drugged. So its not a unification process but an assimilation process.
In short, R.I.P. Hanazawa Kengo's father. The story was going good, until all the zombies became Hiromi's fault, which would've made sense if Kurusu was lying to Hiromi.
I think the author should've taken another year off before rushing this story.
Personal recommendation: Read till Hiromi finds out that she might be able to reverse the Zombification.
Highschool of the dead is the greatest
It's good, kinda unfortunate for the author tho however since he died before being able to finish it
If you like highschool of the dead I would recommend kingdom of z it has an English version printed with 5 volumes so far or Infection which doesn't have an official English version you would have to read fan translations but it has way more fan service then kingdom of z. only thing is in Infection they're not zombies but "infected" but both these series I consider the closest to highschool of the dead
It was great, but i personaly didnt like it.
Didnt like it, felt like a fan fiction of an actual zombie story, characters were annoying (even the faces annoyed me, I just found them irritating to watch). I was hyped to read it for years expecting something decent, it was an instant turn off when I saw the protagonist having an imaginary friend, at some points I got that the behavior of the protagonist was a representation of japanese culture at some level (at least that what I think it was) but his unawareness of the situation was just... idk, dumb? that whole part with his head stuck through a door was dumb as well, dropped it aroung the 25th chapter I think, if it gets better i dont care, horrible first impressions
3:30 you're talking about the breakdown of society in an event like this vs how its depicted in a Japanese manga. I'm surprised you even have to ask this question since you made this video a full year after the floyd riots. People in america will get stabbed to death over a candy bar. Japan is a homogenous society with low crime rate and zero diversity hence it is a safe, high trust country in which those bonds break down extremely slowly and stop breaking down at a certain point. America is literally none of those things and can never bottom out, stemming primarily from a lack of homogeneity. American zombie flicks or literature depicting the situation of order completely falling apart in 10 minutes is accurate because we don't even have a fraction of the order which you can find in a country like Japan.
