  • I've never been a big fan of electronic drum kits. They always sounded "fake"...or so I thought. The last several years have seen some major changes to the way eDrums sound. As a result, I decided to jump in and test the water! This video is about my first impressions. You might be surprised!!

    Thank you, thank you. The only video I’ve found here that was not an over the top commercial advertisement as most others are. Very helpful comments. I’m upgrading from the most basic TD -11 to the TD-27, and can’t wait! Thanks again. Great playing BTW!

    I have this exact Roland TD27KV. I had a Roland TD6 for years and this is a big upgrade. Once you dial in your own settings it’s awesome. I only use it at home and play a Tama Bubinga kit live but the transition from one to the other is seamless. Thoroughly recommend it.

    I'm in the market for a new e-kit after 20+ years with another, so I've been doing my homework. I've watched countless video reviews, but none that were as brutally honest as this one. Thanks for an actually helpful review! Would love to get your take on the Alesis Strike Pro SE.

      I really bought the Roland kit for recording, not live gigs. I wanted something that wouldn't take up a lot of space in my studio, and it seemed like the Roland kit was the better choice. Plus, I can do a direct multi-track recording over USB into Logic...in other words, the Roland TD27 Module can be an audio interface. The Alesis module only has direct analog outputs, so you'll use up a lot of inputs on your interface. However, I totally like the look of the Alesis kit better, and from what I've seen on YT it also sounds really good. I don't think one kit is better than the other..it really comes down to what you're needs are. Roland has the edge for recording, while the Alesis kit seems to be a better choice for live gigs. Plus the Alesis kit is significantly less expensive!

    awesome review. i'm a beginner at drumming. been playing guitar my whole life, and always liked playing my friends drum, so this year i started with lessons and i'm improving a lot already!
    i plan to buy one of this to play in my house without bothering the neighbours too much, and also to be able te record them easily and maybe make some full instrument covers with this included.
    the price is very high, especially where i live... but i'm sure it's not quite easy to build or transport so i guess it's kinda fair.
    you are an amazing player, hope to see more from you playing this kit, for inspiration!

    Great review. I have been wanting an e-kit for awhile. I currently have a dw Collector's Series and a Ludwig Classic Maple Downbeat kit set up. God I love both of these kits, but there are times when I need to minimize my audio presence in the house (and neighborhood) if you know what I mean. "It's midnight and I have my headphones. EVERYONE is happy!" The Roland TD-27KV kit seems like the perfect solution. Again, thank you for your honest review!

      Hey sorry for delayed response! Yes the redued-noise factor is a significant plus, but you should be aware that they do make some noise.....as in stick-hitting-pad noise. That alone can be quite annoying. Then there's the vibrations, which travel through walls and such. Just something to be aware of. Thanks for the comment!

  • @johndef5075
    @johndef5075 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If noise constraints are a problem do not hesitate to try eDrums. I played acoustic for 40 years before trying them and they are a blast. Roland stuff is expensive but well built. I bought all of my Roland stuff used and it still functions very well.

      always funny to read these roland comments. "they hold their value!!" and "always buy second hand!!" are the 2 main comments you see over and over again.
      All the roland sets on ebay right now would cost me £100 in travel costs to pick up! and are all like £100-150 less than buying new anyway hah.

  • @vampirelogic

    This is the best review of this kit I have seen. 100% serious. Its like you are actually reviewing the kit and explaining things instead of telling me its the most amazing thing ever created in hope that roland will see it and send you some sticks or something.
    That said, I actually ordered a VAD 506 for two reasons and you hit on a few of them.
    1: VAD doesn't have a rack, and I hate drum racks.
    2: I really like the idea of the digital ride, snare and the module being able to multitrack record out.
    3: Your hihat concerns are valid but to me the worst part is they are small, so I went all out and ordered the VH14
    Anyway, its on backorder and i should have it next week or week after
    Oh, and about the price, I could have sound proofed a room and got a high end acoustic kit for the same price, the Roland markup is real, but this is my once in a lifetime major purchase so .... well, it better be worth it.

    • @thecreativedrummer5546
      @thecreativedrummer5546  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your feedback! Yea sucking up to Roland wasn't even on my radar. I don't trust anyone who has any sort of "relationship" with the company who''s product they're reviewing, even when they admit that fact up front....as if that somehow shows they're being objective.
      As far as the multitrack thing, just be aware that when Roland says the TD27 module can output 28 tracks of audio, they really mean 14 STEREO tracks. And these tracks cannot be output as mono. To me that's misleading to the point of being dishonest. I don't even see why individual drums or cymbals need to be output in stereo to begin with!
      Now that I've had the chance to mess with the HH settings, I'm still not happy with the response. I really don't mind the smaller size, but the amount of misfires and general lack-of-response when hitting the pad on the edge is downright annoying, and I have yet to figure out how to improve on that....as in I don't think you can! I'd love to hear what your experience is, so please let me know in the comments when you get your kit!
      I think eDrums are here to stay, so the VAD concept seems like the next logical step. Overall I think you'll be pleased with the sounds and versatility of the TD27 module, and as I said in the video, the cymbals.....especially the ride cymbal, are really impressive! Ditto the snare!
      Good luck with your new kit!

    I played my acoustic kit for years and was apprehensive to even consider an electronic kit but when I did yeah it did take some time to get into but once I started to realize that a lot of my energy I could conserve because I was not striking the heads as hard and smashing symbols so it became more of a finesse thing for me after a while but it's a lot of fun I enjoy playing electronic I will not go back to an acoustic kit there's no reason for me to I get everything I need out of electronic kit it's the pros versus the cons and the pros are a lot more than having an ol' acoustic kit lov the tech you get from a electronic kit

      So glad you found it helpful! I think the TD27 brain is a good combination of programmability vs using the built-in sounds out of the box. Still too expensive, but compared to the TD50 a bargain!

    Good review man, you actually gave me clarity. I’m not spending 3500 just for 2 digital pads. That is SO much money and I simply can’t afford it. I’ll go with the td 17 kvx and maybe upgrade in a couple years. I’m curious to know what you think about the kit when paired with superior drummer or ez drummer 3. That’s what I plan on doing. My hope is it’ll be good enough to record with but I’m starting to think I’ll always need to record acoustic drums for final takes. 😔

      hey man, good timing. im just about to get the 17kvx myself. seems like the best for mid line kits. I will be pairing it with addictive drums but for recording. I dont mind the brain kits when im just jamming by myself. overall the 17kvx seems like a great package for the price, although having to buy a hit stand and a kick pedal drives the price a bit. have you gotten yours yet? ive always been able to pull an amazing sound on the DAW but think the latency would be too much for live playing

      I haven’t gotten mine yet, but I’ve actually done a complete 180. I found some videos that highlighted what positional sensing can do within superior drummer and I know I’d be let down if i couldn’t use it. So I’m getting the td 27 kv as soon as I move to my new apartment in a few weeks.

      @@flipnap2112 I’m not sure about the latency but from everything I’ve read and watched I don’t think it’s an issue with vsts/you can adjust stuff to make latency minimal. That’d be sweet to use superior drummer at a live show, I don’t see why latency would be any higher than if in the studio.

    • @mitchmcturtle6890

I was eyeballing that kit as well but its another 1600 bucks. worth it but I dont have that much. digital seems to be the way to go for sure, its the future of edrums. positional snare is super rad without a doubt. the VST issue would be from the DAW. theres always about a 5ms or so and im not sure theres a way around that. man good luck on the swap out. prismatic modeling is tight! good luck brother

    SUPER helpful review! I am seriously on the fence about buying these & your review helped me. Still on the fence, but with your friendly opinion nestled comfortably in my head now it gives me some important things to consider! I do see where this setup sells for around $2,600, seems a bit more reasonable, but still pricey. (curious what your thoughts are on that price vs $1k more?) I'm fairly illiterate at anything programming related, so i am very apprehensive & intimidated about taking the leap into edrums. & ALL THOSE WIRES! My god why hasn't one of these companies invented either wireless (Bluetooth?) so there is NO pad/cymbal wires OR hide all the wiring inside the tube rack with jacks on the frame to simply plug a short 6" cable from the tom or a 24" cable from the cymbal into?? Motorcycles have all the lighting wires hidden in the tube frame, why not edrum wires?! Anyway, I'm very appreciative of your review, it's exactly what I was looking for. & your drumming: really sharp my friend. (I think you made those edrums sound far better than you even realize!)

    • @thecreativedrummer5546
      @thecreativedrummer5546  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all thanks for your kind words! As far as the price: I found out there was a price drop but didn't realize you could buy this kit for $2600. That's definitely more reasonable, relative to the retail price when I bought them. But again, value is a personal thing....only you can decide if $2600 is worth it. I don't know if you're aware, but Roland just bought DW Drums, and introduced.....wait for it.....WIRELESS eDrums! Of course, no indication as to the price or when they'll be available beyond "2023". They unveiled a "sort-of" hybrid kit: acoustic shells that allow you to interchange mesh heads and WIRELESS(!) triggers vs real drum heads that convert the kit to total acoustic....but not both simultaneously, so it's either-or. Not really sure how practical that will be. Since Roland did not release any details beyond developing wireless triggers, I don't know what to think about all this. I know many drummers aren't too keen on the "aesthetics" of eDrum pads, hence the latest crop of eDrums that look like acoustic drums. I don't really care that much, but then again I have yet to use my TD27kv live. BTW I created a follow-up video that may interest you: th-cam.com/video/DoCmXeP8hGU/w-d-xo.html. Anyway, thanks for the comment!

      Bluetooth adds whats called latency meaning your sounds and playing arent in sync. You hit a note and its delayed from your actual strike. Some of the Roland racks have internal cabling.

    Have you tried the Efnote 3X....if not please do and give your thoughts....I am between the TD-27-KV2 and the 3X for smaller venues where space and loudness are an issue....the 3X is better price but the TD-27-KV2 has way more adjustments on the head unit......so I'm really looking for the best basic sound and playability for the price....

I’m very dedicated to music/drumming and am willing to go all out because I want to record with these, but I definitely can’t afford these and would have to go into debt. One thing I've learned after spending many hours behind the TD27 kit is that edrums must be approached as such. Your point about electric vs acoustic guitar is spot on. Electronic drums are a different beast, and it's up to the musician to discover creative ways to use them.
