I don’t usually enjoy violin concertos performed with a piano in lieu of an orchestra and would normally “switch channels” after a few minutes…but this one had me glued to my seat and watching it from start all the way to the end. Both are truly great performers in their own right. Well done!
I dare to say this young girl is one the great one of this opening century. Perfect technique and pure passion. She makes the violin talk, scream and cry. Just sparks coming out of that instrument. Congratulations on the pianist too. They are both incredible musicians.
For a reduced rendition of this concerto, they did a fantastic job. However, its truly sad how tragic and depressing Sibelius's life became, so many years of not composing, lonely and drinking his pain away. What a tremendous loss to the world, as he was clearly one of the greatest composers of his age. Yet, I'm so grateful for all the outstanding works he left behind for humanity, this concerto being just one of them.
I'm currently learning the piano reduction, to play with a violinist. It's a huge work! Carlos Avila plays with superb technique, power and sensitivity. The violinist is in focus, naturally, but I really want to express how grateful I am to have found such a high quality recording! Such a dignified piano accompaniment in duet with a pristine soloist. Wow!
I don't think the point was to laugh at the end of her introduction. She was being serious, and Sibelius's tragedy should not be laughable. What a moving performance, from both violinist and pianist. I love that Ji-Won Song is sensitive (and humble) enough to allow the pianist to be a whole orchestra and that this is played intact, no cuts- an intense, continuous story, delivered by two equal artists.
Awesome! I'm totally enthralled with this extraordinary performance full of mystery, drama, passion, melancholy and lyricism! This violin concerto is a great universal masterpiece, and in the hands of these two marvelous young musicians, it evolves into a sublime musical journey: a perfectly balanced expression of divine art! Magnificent achievement... Stunning!
Heifetz can rest in peace. He has excellent successors. All you guys, keep up the good work. As Heifetz always showed, music is not only technique, it is passion and sentiment,
What a mesmerizing performance! Love the introduction that set the context why this concerto is technically demanding and emotionally draining. I believe playing without an orchestra has its unique challenges: you can't rely on the orchestra to provide the taut support and elevation. On top of that, she's exposed on the all the difficult cadenza-like passages. 5 star performance.
Truly amazing, I felt there are so many stories for every piece that exists. before today whenever I listened to this piece I felt many things like sorrow, war, death, loss, failure etc. but finally got the whole picture.
I've listened to this piece a lot by different people - this performance being the most honest and intense. Pretty ballsy really. Not sure if the world is ready for music this good.
I agree as well. Hillary Hahn has a new recording of this piece, and even though I admire her and she’s my favourite violinist ever, I still came back to this recording, because this feels the most right, and the way she plays expresses the concerto just perfectly. I can’t really explain, it’s just perfect
@@gretaharsanyi9351 Both plays perfectly well, but you gotta take context into account. Hilary Hahn plays in a big hall with a full orchestra, so she has to really dig deep into the strings to project over the orchestra to the end of the hall. Ji-won plays in a more intimate setting, with a piano so she can play softly and let the subtlety shine; but if it were a big hall, no one would be able to hear her.
@@LinhNguyen-di5bz You're absolutely right. I didn't think about it until now. Maybe I like this recording better because I heard this first and fell in love with the piece itself and just got used to how it sounds. Although Hilary's interpretation is different, now that I think about it, it's beautiful as well, and it's actually really amazing, considering it's not her usual style. Anyways, thanks for sharing your thoughts, now I know why the two recordings sound so different:)
I'd feel deeply insulted if I prefaced a concerto with the passion and sincerity she did and had the audience laugh and clap like that. It's not laughable, and it's not funny. Ji-Won Song was absolutely mesmerising though, this is one of my favourite performances of this concerto. Absolutely breathtaking.
Again I am drunk; in pain; my joys and sorrows one; the dancing tears. Yet sober. I don't know how much they get for doing this, but it's not enough. As if there could be.
This concerto ,the Brahms are separate huge Suns with their own constellations of planets ! Countless times I have read about Sibelius and the events up to writing this concerto . He was not a depressive he accomplished a great deal and lived a very long life . Perhaps this is not the best forward to this music . Wonderful performance nothings comes to lifelike the orchestral writing in this work the timpani and brass exclamations are impossible on piano !
im pretty sure the audience in this one is filled with a bunch of sociopaths; laughing before the first movement & clapping after the 1st ended, and laughing before the second lmao
The year is 2122 (or 2222), violinists still playing and suffering to play the perfect version of the violin concerto composed by a violinist was started relatively old, however nobody will remember that performance or that girl... What shame this shalow generation!
Dear miss Ji-Won, you haven´t done your home work very well. You say: "Sibelius was extremely depressed and lonely person and he had to live on alcohol to escape from his sorrow for the last 50 years of his life." I have to say that I am deeply sorry for your words. Just because you don´t know what you are talking about. You should be ashamed but I believe you can´t just because you are just so young that you don´t understand. I can´t realize where in Earth you found your misunderstandings about Sibelius? And you tell them to your audience with a smile on your face. Please, never tell your audience such a bullshit about those people whose music you are going to play! Sibelius wasn´t extremely depressed, not at least his last 50 years, he wasn´t exactly a lonely person and he didn´t live on alcohol. I believe there are also quite new biographies about him in English too. Maybe you should find a good library and read something more about him. Especially if you dare to play his wonderful music. Have a good life and nice career! Bw from Pekka Laitinen, Finland. By the way: I loved your playing: really fantastic and with such a deep feeling and passion!

I had the privilege of being there, and this performance was absolutely amazing.
Indeed 🙏

What other works by Sibelius do you recommend?
I appreciated the preface from Sibelius' own words in life. Virtuoso playing on the violin and a beautiful piano accompaniment.
listening to Sibelius's back story really made me see images when listening to this concerto and how it reflected his situation
She's extraordinary.

It’s because she said “I hope you enjoy” right after... lol
Obviously not invested...

Amazing performance. Not a piece of sugar like many performers do. Totally incisor, penetrating, temperamental. One of the best versions.

It was one of the best performance I have ever seen. Both violinist and the pianist did extraordinary .
Her dynamics...her tone... its all so perfect.
Loving your Sibelius much, Ji-Won! ❤
This is one of the best versions of this concerto. Top 5. Intense expression and deep artistic concience.

Great! No cuts in the piano accompaniment! I never listen to performances which cut the accompaniment - thanks!
Great musicians, and playing of the highest level. Bravo!

What clarity and mastery of the instrument she has...
Amazing! Thank you!
I cried, this is stunningly beautiful
stunning first movement. The audience rewarded it the right way.
Some of the greatest music ever, and hardest to play, a regular mountain top for a young violinist, made me cry, terrific piano accompanist
I love both musicians. Talented. Sweet girl.
i love her performance really...
Extraordinary interpretation 🙏🙏🙏 outstanding. With grace, passion, and an astonishing aparent simplicity and ease
Thank you for your wonderful performance and uploading

I used to think piano sounded awkward as a substitute for an orchestra in a concerto. Not anymore.
누구든 앞부분의 소개말 번역해주시면 좋겠습니다만 . . . ^^
모차르트가 연주하는 시벨리우스의 느낌이랄까...가볍지만 알찬소리가나네요.
Second best interpretation imo after vengerov
no one else can bring out the sorrow like heifetz in this piece imo. especially the 2nd movement....
@@TheViolinAndMore what about Christian ferras? His 2nd movement is magical. It's the only one which made me cry.
Bravo!!! 😂👏👏👏👏👏👏
真美!这是美国人的骄傲。
I wish I could go to the Heifetz Institute, I live so close to it. But I probably am not good enough at the violin😭
Strive to for it. I bet you can come here if you believe in it. I know we want you to. :)
