When changing the bar and or chain, you also have to make sure of the gauge. You must make sure that they both match at either .043, .050, .058 or .063. Don't run a .050 chain on a .063 bar, even though it fits, as it will wobble, where a .063 chain won't fit in the groove on a .050 bar.
When you held the two sprockets side by side at the very beginning of 03:09 to halfway into 03:12. showing the gear damage compared to the new on, it looked like the new one isn't as deep as the old one. I guess what matters is the depth is enough to do its thing for the clutch, if I worded that correctly. It's cool how the number of teeth in the sprocket determines the torque vs speed. And I never would have known to align the little grove/notch to the oiler worm gear shaft. I hope my manual covers all of that, and adjusting the carburetor idle and all for altitude. I know I need to do that before I try to use it. It's brand new and unused so far. Thanks, Don! You're the man.

That seemed wasteful, so I began buying three new chains with sprocket and bearing; then rotating the chains when one dulls, sharpening all three chains when last one is dull, maybe a couple days work in hard/dirty wood. By the time all three chains are shot, the drive sprocket has pretty good wear too and would be out of pitch with new chains. I notice big box stores rarely have sprockers in stock.

I will say, most of my Husqvarna/Jonsered saws have a screwed on clutch, it's nice to just pop a clip and slam in a sprocket on this Stihl rather than pulling out the chisel and hammer (Or, dare I say, the Impact!)
If that guy is using the saw that much. He needs a pro sprocket and he needs a new bearing. I always take the air gun and blow out the clutch and springs. Then a dab of grease on those springs. On a new bar or chain. I always put chain saw grease in the groove. Dry on dry hurts
Love your videos and this has nothing to do with you but… the brand new chain being that dull would seriously piss me off. A sharp chain should be producing small wood chips, not sawdust.

Great video. You explained the pitch and described the difference between 7 and 8 teeth sprocket. I have a 290 with a 20" bar so torque is important and will keep the 7 teeth sprocket. Great detailed explanation of the removal of the sprocket. Clear view of the damaged sprocket and the chain and bar. I need to inspect those areas next time I use my chainsaw and make sure all have the same pitch etc. A great video in 10 minutes.
Good vid. I have a 1995 029 and it has been really good saw for me still running strong with minimal parts replaced and I typically run around 10 gallons of fuel through it a year so it gets used .. When you installed the new sprocket, bar and chain, how much adjustment did you still have in the chain adjuster? My chains always need to be replaced do to running out of tensioning before the cutting teeth are worn out. At one point I replaced the bar, sprocket and chain do to wear (stihl parts) and the starting point for the adjuster was at the midpoint, is this normal?
I had trouble with slower cutting like that with .325 pitch "green" (safety) chain. If you are used to having full pro-chisel chain the difference is very noticable.
The lesson here is that the owner did not do the basic maintenance checks on the saw. If he had, he would have replaced the sprocket long ago, and a bar and chain, that had not done much work, would not have to be replaced.
If you are going to replace the bar, chain and sprocket why not just switch to the 3/8” chain and make finding replacement parts easier on the customer in the future? The repair might even be cheaper since the 3/8” components are readily available.
Hi Donnyboy. I love your channel. I have the same model saw. I replaced the star drum with a rim sprocket model. They are easy to fit and the sprockets are really cheap to replace, or you can run multiple chains and sprockets. Or run different diameter sprockets. Just another option to consider.
I had to replace the sprocket on my stihl and I didn't realize that it had to fit over the pin for the oiler. So after burning up the bar i tore it down and I also watched a video on it, which I wished I had done that first hand. I guess you learn from your own mistakes.

Donny boy does a fabulous job because his explanations are simple and he illustrates what he is doing, explaining it to you and showing you the new versus the old parts. Great job Donnie boy! About the only thing I would recommend is that the chain oil reservoir should have been checked and that a thin coating of chain oil should have been placed on the new bar. Chain oil is vital to the functioning of the machine and cutting efficiency. If the chain oil reservoir is empty, one could prematurely Wear Out The Chain and the bar. Hope this suggestion is useful to everyone, take care.
Great Video Don!! New Stihl bars are rarer then hen’s teeth these days. I was lucky to find an almost new used bar at my local dealer. I’ll be doing a new sprocket and will go at the crank seals on my 026 over the winter as preventative maintenance.
Was there a reason you chose to stick with the stock style sprocket and not upgraded to the newer rim gear? I would think that would be a better choice so that that problem doesn’t happen again.

It never ceases to amaze me how people neglect cleaning their power tools after us. My gear is always cleaned up after use. My old MS250 is 18yrs old, has average use and is clean enough to eat your dinner off it, metaphorically speaking of course.
I just used my 025 from the '90's to clear some blown down trees. These basic saws are rock solid for lighter duty work if well cared for. (mine is not as 'clean' but not packed full of chips and mud)

Pitch refers to the profile of the tooth (or space between teeth) The eight tooth sprocket is a little bigger in diameter but the teeth are the same .325" as the 7 tooth one.
@@donvoll2580 it's like any gearing, say a bicycle or motorcycle. ABC shaft rpm x the driving sprocket. In this case 8/7= 1.142 or a 14% "overdrive" with a *commensurate loss of torque.
I grease the nose roller sprocket at every sharpening. I always pre-oil a new bar's groove top and bottom. I grease the clutch roller bearing every chain swap. Keeps the wear down, especially in hard woods with dirty bark.
some bars have holes to grease the nose bearings. if it does grease it every othr tank of fuel. if it doesnt let it be. the oil will just hold the dirt and may actually attract it

That wood seem to cut a little slow, that wood must be a little green and frozen.

Questions, don't u need to oil the bar sprocket? I have a old chainsaw myself & I have to oil that sprocket every once in awhile?
