Clicker Training FOR CATS Tutorial - How to CLICKER TRAIN CAT in 3 steps

  • Learn how to teach your cat tricks using clicker training with 3 simple steps.
    It only took me one week to start teaching tricks training to Mia, my bengal cat. By using this simple method, clicker training your cat/s can be easy and fast.
    A clicker is simply a small mechanical noisemaker. Clicker training is the same as positive reinforcement training. It links classic conditioning with some animal ethology science that says that behaviors that are rewarded are more likely to be repeated.
    Instead of focusing on what your cat is doing wrong (which we know will continue to happen), focus your cat's attention on what she or he is doing right.

    Dude I tried this with my two half-Bengal kittens and it totally works! 6 months in, they can do finger targeting, come when called, sit, lie down, roll over, go into their condo, reach up on their hind paws, and sometimes stay (if they feel like it XD).
    I want to clarify one thing he says in the vid which confused me at first: "charging" the clicker. Basically what this means is to associate the sound of the clicker with giving your cat treats. I combined this with teaching them their names, so they would expect something good from me whenever they were called. Basically I just said one of their names, clicked, and gave that one a treat (same for the other) over and over for a few minutes over a few days. Then moved on to finger targeting, sit, and beyond.
    You can do this! Cats like to learn and it brings you closer together!

    • @_____kb
      @_____kb ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, are you saying you only gave a treat to the one who came? What if they both come? I'm currently trying to train two new kittens. But I'm confused about how to train them both together. When I click for one of them, should I give the other a treat even though she isnt doing anything? Or should I train separately? Its not always easy to train them separately. I dont want to dilute the effect of the clicker by working with one cat so the other hears it and doesnt get a treat. Just need some advice.

    • @IfooNoodle-mg2tk
      @IfooNoodle-mg2tk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@_____kb totally late reply, but for teaching names it's better to do it separately. Other commands like sit, lay down, etc. is fine to teach to two or more cats at the same time (the cats might even learn from each other!)

      I have the same question for two kitties that I plan to clicker train. My idea is to do them separately, at first to get them acquainted with the clicker. Then both at the same time for the other tricks. Would this be a good idea?

    I just wanted to say thank you so much for uploading these videos and explaining how easy it is to clicker train a cat. my Bengal girl who is 10 used to drive me insane, once I started clicker training she became the cat I've always wanted. I wish I knew about these skills when I had her at Mia's age as we would have had a better relationship but that's all changed now and we're in such a good place together!
    she actually picks up skills like a young cat would, I haven't had to work hard on her either, in fact I started adding in additional skills a bit early as it she didn't appear challenged enough with just "sit". so now she can sit, get into the carrier (that was a major goal for me), sit and stay (working on this one still but it's going well, finger targetting is going well but still needs work.
    she sleeps through the night, doesn't hassle me for food constantly or attention, she's challenged, happy and stimulated.
    Thank you

      Thank you so much for the recommendation! I like the idea! I'll work on one! :)
      I can give you some quick answers, already though:
      - To go from free feeding to schedule, try to offer "all you can eat" but only 3 times a day. Once they stop eating, remove the food until the next meal.
      - I feed Mia wet food only and use dry kibble as treats for training. When outdoors, I use jam instead.
      - I feed Mia 3 times a day plus the training sessions. At 8am, at 3pm and at 12am.
      Hope this helps!

    Thank you

    • @JayPats
      @JayPats 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Daniela,
      Not the video author but charging your clicker I believe means to get your cat used to its sound and associate it with treats, like cats associate the noise of their treat bag with treats. When he said Scribbles I assume he meant kibbles as in dry cat food rather than treats, since the cat can eat a lot more kibbles in a short period of time vs cat treats in a short period of time :)

      There are a couple things you can do if you want to train your kittens together:
      1) Use a different clicker sound (so that they don't confuse their "click" with their siblings)
      2) Teach them different tricks (so they don't both do the trick at the same time)
      The other alternative, is locking one cat at a time. You can lock yourself with the cat you are training instead of the cat that it's not trained. That makes the experience for the cat that's alone nicer.

    Hello I’m a new cat mom and I want to be able to train my cat like yours! My plan is to buy a clicker and binge watch all your videos! But for clarification, do you “click” after they’ve done the behavior you wanted or before so they know what to do? Thank you for your knowledge! Happy New Year!

    • @OutdoorBengal
      @OutdoorBengal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Hello Corina! It makes me so happy to receive messages like this one... ☺
      Once the clicker is "charged" your cat will know that after a "click" comes a reward. By clicking when your cat does the behavior you are wanting to achieve, the cat will know that that behavior gets them a "click", and "click" comes with a reward. So the trick here is to "click" in the exact moment when they do the behavior (while they are doing it). For example, if you are getting your cat to sit down, you'll click when your cat's butt touches the floor, not before, not after.
      I hope this helps! Best of luck!

    Once the clicker is charged, when you train your cat for finger targetting for instance, do you give reawrd when you click, or you just click? And once finger targetting is trained, in daily life, when you use your fingers to make her go somewhere, do you still click? And if so, do you also need to reward?

    • @lasttime122
      @lasttime122 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's because she was taken from the mama n siblings way to soon.
      They learn that bitting hurts via there siblings n mama. Kittens are teething at that age up to a year as the big adult teeth come in.
      A kitten should be 3months old when they leave the litter mates n mama as this is when they learn lots of things.

    Love to Mia ♥️☺️

    • @JordanSullivanadventures
      @JordanSullivanadventures 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So "charging" is just something you do at the beginning of training -- it really just means to associate the sound of the clicker with giving your cat a treat. So what I did was say my cats name, click, and then give her a treat over and over for a few minutes, over a few days. If you do this enough, when you say your cat's name, they will come expecting a treat, and when that happens you click and reward.
      In general, I would spending at least a few weeks on each trick before moving on (I train them almost every day bc it's basically a game for me :)

    • @JordanSullivanadventures
      @JordanSullivanadventures 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For my cats, I train them every day (not as a chore, it's honestly really fun!). I feed them in the morning, train them in the afternoon, then feed them again ~9pm. If you want to start training, you could reduce the amount of food you give them by a little, but don't stress it really. If you notice their weight is creeping up, you can adjust.

    Thanks for your great videos! :-D I have two kitties and one of them responds very well to clicker training with the help of your videos, and the other one is not interested in the reward (cat treat) or training. I have two questions: 1) how young can the cats be when stopping to free feed? I hope this can help the less interested cat in training to wear a harness. They are soon 5 months old, but when I asked my veterenary he had never heard of clicker training for cats and could not see the problem with free feeding. 2) The cat that responds to clicker trainging paws towards my fingers when I give the treat, and I am not sure how to make him stop? He rarely have the claws out, but I would prefer him not to. He does this AFTER I have clicked because he did the behaviour I wanted, and since I already have clicked I give him the treat (right?). To illustrate with an example: I ask him to sit, he sits, I click, and then he pawes towards my fingers for the treat. Should I not give him the treat even though I clicked? I am worried I am enforcing the behaviour... Would love to hear your advice!

    • @OutdoorBengal
      @OutdoorBengal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'll try to break down my anser into 3:
      - Cats can be trained and Mia and all those who've tried it, are the living proof.
      - There's no problem on free feeding but you are removing the best opportunity to 1) bond with your cat, 2) teach them things, 3) help them adapt to follow your schedule
      - The last point, about clawing, there are several things you can do: 1) don't have the treat on your hand. Put the treats in a pot and keep the pot out of reahc. 2) throw the treat away instead of giving it close to you. 3) don't give the treat until they look at you in the eyes after the trick.
      good luck!
