Boxing is for when you have nothing. I was 19 .. had no aspirations in my life. All of my friends were going to college, military, or getting good jobs. I worked at a call center … hated it. At 20 I found out I had a child on the way. I had no career, a really beat up car. The mother of my child left me when she was pregnant and said she didn’t want to be with me, a loser. When my son was born she didn’t want me to be in his life, she kept him away from me. I had to put myself in child support to have parental rights just to see him 2 hours every week. That was a hard hit because I was barely making enough to pay my rent. I couldn’t afford anything.. there was a community recreation center down the street and they had boxing classes for like 20 bucks a month. So I got the membership..I was in there 4 hours a day every day. Coach Javier picked me up. Trained me and took me to golden gloves. Started competing and the only time I felt alive was in the gym. The only thing that took the hurt away from being away from my son or not being good at any thing was boxing. That year I enrolled in a community college and started taking classes for IT. Got a job doing IT .. started making some money.. boxing gave me back my confidence when I had nothing. Boxing is for those who have nothing and want to be something. I never became world champion .. but boxing gave me my manhood back .. the best life lessons I learned was in the ring. I remember sparring against a huge guy .. he had knock out power in his right i remember going to my corner .. coach Javier asked does it hurt ? I said yeah.. he said “ life hurts .. life is going to throw harder punches at you but you have to keep fighting” .. to this day every Saturday morning I go and take my boxing class .. and any free time during the week I hit the heavy bag. Boxing was my escape..
