- Local 1196: A Steelworkers Strike
(2023, 59 minutes)
By Samuel George
Local 1196 takes the viewer on the ground as days on strike turn to weeks, weeks turn to months, and union leaders realize they’re playing with a short stack, and against long odds.
About the Film:
“The old American dream just seems to be gone,” says Walt Hill, a longtime United Steelworkers Union member and the Contract Coordinator for Local 1196 in the decaying steel town of Brackenridge, Pennsylvania.
In March of 2021, the steelworkers of USW 1196 struck, citing unfair labor practices. Over the next four months, “Local 1196” follows from late night conversations on the picket lines, to fiery debates at the union hall, to the living rooms of the members, themselves. Taken together, this film gives unique insight and access into the daily struggles of America’s blue-collar workers. The film embeds with leaders of a demographic widely stereotyped, sometimes taken for granted, sometimes ridiculed, but rarely given the chance to share their world, in their own words.
As Walt puts it in the film, “I think that this fight shows that, at least here, we’re fighting back.”
Love you guys, your courage, and what you represent ...my grandpap was a union steelworker at E.T. in Braddock. They fought hard for what they got and all they wanted was a living and a fair crack at it for their children... This is the real heart of humanity in America
Workers of the World unite, you have nothing to loose but your chains
Amazing documentary.
The worker always gets screwed unfortunately.
;7w😮7w8😢
A timely documentary. I miss the good old days, where they actually looked after their employees.
Feel bad for them I hope something positive happens for them all and their families
Union organizer here. I am thankful for the fight thats been brought this far. We'll keep fighting
Keep it up and they'll move to another Country. The Company doesn't need you as much as you think they do.
@@xtr3m3fLx Fine. Let them move. Some of us won't settle for slave wages.
Really well shot and edited. Very professional. God bless these yinzers. Go Stillers.
Blessings to the workers
This kid on the couch isn't listening until dad had to cut karate
Good luck brothers. Was in USWA 1331, Republic Steel, Youngstown, OH. We had many givebacks, mergers and finally bankruptcy.
Maes me think of the place they all worked in The Deer Hunter
Being in a Union is beneficial 100% as an employee or even when your unemployed .............
So were there strike breakers and scabs working?
Yes
@@thefrase7884 I thought that was illegal
did they went back to work? did they finally sign a contract or not
As a non union maintenance technician every place I have worked has had 12 hour shifts with no over time and I had to come in for 6 hours in the middle of a work week to make up for it. The time to unionize is fucking now. People are getting dumber.
19:47……why would he think you can collect UC if you choose to strike?
Jokes on you...we ended up getting UC, plus the 300 dollar Federal supplement because ATI executives are idiot cocksuckers and lost in court.😂😂
Ahora hagan por favor un documental de los estadounidenses que se vienen a México buscando el ahora llamado "sueño mexicano".
this actually is really fitting too because while yea national unions vote like 60% democrat but in Pennsylvania/Ohio are the states over 50% of union voters vote republican
Its so hard these companies are vampires. There's issues major issues with unions not fighting hard enough for the members but at least from this documentary that's not my feeling and or opinion of this local. In solidarity with all American workers from a union activist, and for a couple more days District Steward and AFSCME LOCAL 1583 member.
It's hard to fight an entity that doesn't care if it continues to exist. That's how battle with companies are now...a fight against faceless, nameless entities known as shareholders.
1123 is garbage, gave too my concessions and didn't want to fight for us. Practically in the company's pocket. International too. Pitiful!
Estadounidenses están trabajando a distancia desde México barato ,!urge ! Cobrarles el impuesto requerido ,que el SAT no se duerma y los Estadounidenses ,no se agan pendejos.
