I moved to Pittsburgh from Nova Scotia, Canada in 1963 when I was 8 years old. My father was a physician and went to work at Pitt Medical School. We only stayed there for 4 years and moved to Central Pennsylvania so my father could start a private practice. I love these Pittsburgh shows because they bring back such wonderful memories of my first home in the United States! Great place with great people.

However, after being here in Florida 12 years I am oh so homesick for Pittsburgh. You just can't compare the people anywhere else with the people of Pittsburgh. We are just back from a 3 week vacation there and will be going back for a month in the fall. We do plan to move back - snow or no snow - I'll take Pittsburgh over anywhere else.
I moved here from Buffalo in late 2011 with my wife whose job was relocated. I'm so glad I did! I had thought about doing so back in the 90s and I wish I had. It's such a great city - compared to Buffalo, the people are almost as friendly but Pittsburgh has so much energy and optimism. It's a city that is moving forward, not clinging to its past. I love the architecture, the sports teams, the economy, the events, and the weather is better (if you like rain better than snow!). Now, Buffalo is a nice place to visit now and then - it's a food city, the summers are full of great festivals, it's a lower cost of living and the terrain is more accessible for travel - but it's still economically and socially depressed (and the sports teams suck!) and the winters are HORRIBLE. Most people consider pittsburgh a smaller city but fail to realize it's only small on paper with 300,000 people. But it's borders have remained the same size since early 1900. Most major cities expand there border to half or most of there counties anywhere between 500 and 800 square miles. Pittsburgh is only 55 Sq mi. If it were the same area as most other cities, pop would be 1.3 million. 2.0 urban. 3.0 metro. And would actually be the 9th largest city in the us lol. True story. Not to mention it's the top 5 most density populated city in us.
I'm so glad about what you said here. I have tried to explain exactly what you just said to a lot of younger people who call Pittsburgh small. Pittsburgh is a major metropolitan area. Up until the 70s we were in the 10 metro areas population wise. So calling Pittsburgh a small city is not correct unless you are just referring to the city limits. Which by the way the city limits are actually bigger than Boston. Your also right about how Pittsburgh has not expanded it's limits. We have a huge suburban area. Which I'm other cities would be part of the city.
300,000 ain't small! 333 (where I'm at) is tiny, 10,000 is small, 100,000 is medium. According to television (LA, NYC & Atlanta of course) everything under 1,000,000 is small! Get real!
The minute you stop anywere in Pittsburgh Pa and say hi to someone you will say ive never met such nice personable people, instantly friendly, down to earth, helpful with a good sence of humor, you may never meet people as nice as in Pittsburgh Pa. Its the bigest little town as its called, because of all the knowledge folks have of who lives were and the diffent ethnic communities. But most every were is good old fashion, help the next guy type people and be kind.
I'm heading there tomorrow from Virginia, which i've only been here a day and honestly can't wait to leave. I'm almost desperate to meet people that are not stuck up, want down to earth people, humble people. People that are real and like to laugh.
I don't really see the friendliness anymore that I used to see as a child in the early 2000's. It is becoming a rather pretentious city. The old steel/blue collar people who were friendly now live in states such as NC, FL, VA, MD, etc.
I love Pittsburgh - I've lived in Atlanta going on 26 years - but one day I plan to move back to Pittsburgh! Love Atlanta but nothing like Pittsburgh to me!
I was born and raised in Western PA. Lived there for my first 32 years. Even spent 2 years in the Pittsburgh area. I've lived in Phoenix now for the last 11 years. I enjoy the warm winters, LOL! BUT....IF I was to ever move back to PA, it would most likely be Pittsburgh.
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh any time I run into someone from Pgh they talk and talk about Pgh it's Porky Chedwick the Steelers many ethnic groups it's downtown Shadyside great hospitals and lots of loving people
These people who now live in Phoenix forget to mention summers in AZ. I like Scottsdale and Sedona in the winter but summer!! Yeah, it's a "dry heat" says the skeleton leaning against the cactus ! No place is perfect-snow, rain, humidity, wildfires, floods, hurricanes, tornados, etc. -it's mainly the people who makes a City a great place to live!
I've noticed a lot of people were talking about moving to Pittsburgh! And luckily I live there so I thought id talk about fun places to visit in Pittsburgh! 1.Station Square 2.Carienge Science Center (I didn't spell that right but still) 3.Carienge Museums 4.Ross Park Mall 5.Random shops downtown 6.Just randomly driving around is still pretty cool 7.PNC Park 8.PPG Arena 9.Heinz Field 10.Go on the three bridges (for Rachel Carson,Andy Warhol, and Clemente I think that's how you spell his name idk) Those are places you should go to (or do) when you visit/move to Pittsburgh!
I lived here most of my life only bcuz i HAD to. Born there and stayed only till parents died. Now living in the most beautiful city in the USA. Phoenix AZ. No more of snow shoveling as I now shovel the sun. No more dull dreary days without seeing sunshine which causes depression. Very happy now and have no desire to ever return to Pit.
I would love to see an update on the two young girls living in squirrel Hill with their mother and father because I remember when this came out and I mean I've been watching Rick sebak and WQED since the Pittsburgh roadshow I mean 1980s. I was born in 1982 and I would just love to see an update on some of these shows.
I left the Pittsburgh area (Allegheny County) 6 years ago, the taxes are extremely high , jobs are minimum wages not many jobs pay well, bars are on every block, crime is bad , all of my family left for better paying jobs down south. Roads are bad, traffic is bad. Mon valley is deplorable and most are ghost towns.
I left in 1983. My wife had 2 bikes stolen, got run off the road while biking as well. Every year you have to replace your muffler and the winters are horrendous. Glad I live in Florida with the best Governor in the country.
Reasons I love Pittsburgh: low crime, cheap housing, and a vastly improving infrastructure for bicyclists. This town was a toilet when I moved here 10 years ago and it has changed DRAMATICALLY since then.
Ten years ago a toilet? I've been here since 86 and its been a gem up until 20 years ago lol. I guess its all about perception and for me nostalgia. We lost a lot of great places.
@@popscola2574 Pittsburgh‘s population actually peaked in the 1950s. My original comment was made eight years ago and while I’m certainly not going to stand by everything that I had said about Pittsburgh it’s still better town than a lot of other cities that I visited.
I like Pittsburgh, its a very pretty city. The people are nice and friendly for the most part. I don't detect a lot of racism like in the south. Pittsburgh is so pretty its surrounded by mountains and cliffs it gives the city such a beautiful look. Also its a much safer city to live in compared to NY or Philly and the cost of living is affordable.
what up my neighbor! I absolutely adore it, i really do. My GF lives there, and i hope to be there sometime soon with her permanently. That Skyline is phenomenal..specially when coming through the Pitt tunnel and your not expecting it!
+S Dog see i didnt like Philly on my visit there..Pittsburgh seems much friendlier to me but ive lived in the city of Pittsburgh all my life within minutes of downtown so maybe its what you get used too..
what up my neighbor! It is nice to visit but not to live in. Property taxes very high. Auto insurance the same. Feb is the coldest month with unbearable temps. Traffic is horrendous and hasn't changed in 30 years. They really need some freeways. I don't know if public transportation has changed either. Not familiar if they have Light Rail yet. Yes, it is a pretty city as I went back in 2015 to do photography. There is some very interesting old architecture. But is is always great to come home to Phoenix, AZ sindistackfotography.smugmug.co

I've been obsessed with videos about Pittsburgh. Looks like a cool place to live. I hear the public transpo isn't as great as other cities like Chicago or Boston, one of the main things keepin me from moving there.
The weather is very depressing half the year. People are not open but clannish. Conversations beyond the weather casts suspicion. Diversity is not heralded. It's racially polarized black vs. white. "Hard guys", basically middle-aged bullies, will stare down strangers. Critical standards are embraced. There is an air of cynicism. People are frugal. It's conservative. It's affordable and beautiful in the summer but, not paradise.
I've lived here all my life, luckily my parents settled here following WW2. Winters can be tough but I like the seasons. We have our share of jagoffs but mostly people are very friendly. Also if you travel from Pittsburgh it's likely you'll find a Steelers bar almost anywhere you go. If we know you are a visitor we will go out of our way to convince you that this is a special place.
@@nunyabidnis5407 I would disagree. People are friendly in the Mon Valley towns and other towns outside of the city. In my recent observations, I've found the city is not friendly like it was during my childhood in the early 2000's. It's becoming rather pretentious
@@jamescoda7297 I grew up south of Pittsburgh in the 60's. Like you said things have changed some. Seems like politeness and common courtesy are slipping away, not just here, but everywhere.
@@nunyabidnis5407 They definitely have changed, and I'm not one to eschew change. However, I often read about the friendly/blue collar trope in relation to Pittsburgh, and I do not observe that nowadays. I do see how the friendly Pittsburgher/blue collar trope is now being used as a marketing strategy (like the commodification of Pittsburghese). The people who were part of that trope (the former steel workers/coal miners/working class) have largely abandoned the area due to the massive steel layoffs of the 1980's. Pittsburgh may have been "friendly" (or whatever that means) back during my childhood, but it isn't now. Also, the influx of wealthy people has made the city rather unwelcoming monetarily as working class Pittsburghers are being priced out of their neighborhoods.
My wife and I grew up in Pittsburgh. That's why we live in another county where taxes are low. Ever increasing taxes is the reason my parents moved from Pittsburgh to another county long ago. That's called voting with your feet. Add to that a crappy public transportation system.Just my opinion.
I just found this video, I am thinking of moving to the city in a few months, and I don't really understand the kind of "bad areas" everyone is talking about, is it bad like stlouis or New York crime rates or is it more like a bit of crime that is more noticeable? lol sorry if its coming off Rude, I just don't understand, I'm from Seattle so idk lol.

I'm sure metro Pittsburgh is at least a million or 2. Never been there.
Mike Madden it's around 2.3 to 2.5 million.
Highly Thinking, Modern Living and Friendly people in Pittsburgh. 👌✌🍎✌🙏❤💕
It's true! Strangers assume I'm from the south because of my hospitality only to find I'm a native Pittsburgh gal.
I don't really see the friendliness anymore that I used to see as a child in the early 2000's. It is becoming a rather pretentious city. The old steel/blue collar people who were friendly now live in states such as NC, FL, VA, MD, etc.
This makes me proud! Awesome, Rick!
i will never leave either love it here
I love Pittsburgh - I've lived in Atlanta going on 26 years - but one day I plan to move back to Pittsburgh! Love Atlanta but nothing like Pittsburgh to me!
Pittsburgh is cool, I live here, it's my hometown and there's much to do, and it looks especially amazing in the winter
Okay, Pilar and Franceshesca were probably like, dangit why did we end up getting our picture with that mayor!?
Never actually spent time there but the people were always friendly when I would come thru
Agree with you. So many have contemplated moving away as a plan but, most have chanted that plan.
I want to move to Pittsburgh cuz I love the Pittsburgh Steelers here we go
I’ve been all over this country..,but there’s NO PLACE LIKE PITTSBURGH!
I really love Pittsburgh, I've been living here since I was born
A rented 3 Bedroom house in Pgh costs less than a studio here in NY, shoot, it costs less than a room here in NY
Facts... .
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh any time I run into someone from Pgh they talk and talk about Pgh it's Porky Chedwick the Steelers many ethnic groups it's downtown Shadyside great hospitals and lots of loving people
I miss it. Living in Florida is ok. Pittsburgh my ❤️
These people who now live in Phoenix forget to mention summers in AZ.
15:22 I like how the contest went as far as Japan but yet the winner is from Pitt!!!
Left Pittsburgh in 1980. Don't miss it.
I've noticed a lot of people were talking about moving to Pittsburgh! And luckily I live there so I thought id talk about fun places to visit in Pittsburgh!
1.Station Square
2.Carienge Science Center (I didn't spell that right but still)
3.Carienge Museums
4.Ross Park Mall
5.Random shops downtown
6.Just randomly driving around is still pretty cool
7.PNC Park
8.PPG Arena
9.Heinz Field
10.Go on the three bridges (for Rachel Carson,Andy Warhol, and Clemente I think that's how you spell his name idk)
Those are places you should go to (or do) when you visit/move to Pittsburgh!
I ALWAYS WANTED TO MOVE TO THE BURGH I JUST HAVE NO MONEY
Thank you for the feedback, Mack!
I was raised in Pittsburgh, so obviously I have an emotional connection to it. I would not want to live anywhere else.

It's The Burgh"
+pghpa611 but it is so damn cold your bones never recover. That is why I love Phoenix.
PITTSBURGH PA.SO BEAUTIFUL
I left the Pittsburgh area (Allegheny County) 6 years ago, the taxes are extremely high , jobs are minimum wages not many jobs pay well, bars are on every block, crime is bad , all of my family left for better paying jobs down south. Roads are bad, traffic is bad. Mon valley is deplorable and most are ghost towns.
I left in 1983. My wife had 2 bikes stolen, got run off the road while biking as well. Every year you have to replace your muffler and the winters are horrendous. Glad I live in Florida with the best Governor in the country.
I live in Pittsburgh I've been there since I was little
Reasons I love Pittsburgh: low crime, cheap housing, and a vastly improving infrastructure for bicyclists.
I'm moving there at the end of this year!!!
I hope it’s going well. I was born and raised there.
That Skyline is phenomenal..specially when coming through the Pitt tunnel and your not expecting it!
ianp751 yep, LETS GO BUCS!
AZSinbad i will take pittsburgh any. day over phoenix
Recommended in 2024, pgh since 2013 and I’ll never leave
lived here all my life nice place but the roads suck full of potholes.--hard on your car.
So true. I lived in Brookline and was wondering why such a small residential section of a city had so many auto body shops....Me & my car found out....
I love this so much. 412 proud
Good Information, thank you
There is areas in Pittsburgh you can buy a house for the price of a VCR and thats cool.
Mold, radon, bank and tax leans, and flooded basments are included at no extra cost.
Fred Meyer must be from Cleveland, go steelers.
+Joe Shook Yeah, they're even going to through in the bullet-proof vests for free because you're going to need it.
+Joe Shook Probably in the Hood with all the gangs. LOL
Easy to get heroin, though!
I love Pittsburgh. I have lived here my whole life and will never live anywhere else. I have vacationed in 31 states and Canada but Pittsburgh is home.
My God please don't be telling people how cheap the rent is or Pittsburgh will be DOOMED!!!
The rent really isn't that cheap, at least not in the decent neighborhoods.
Rent isn't "cheap" anywhere! However, rent is VERY INEXPENSIVE in Pittsburgh compared to other similar- sized cities in America!
I Can't Say it enough..............
Why Live In Pittsburgh...... Amazing Cost of Living A True University City High Tech Incubation A Natural Gas Mecca (thanks to The Marcellus and Utica Shell) Medical Research Banking Center A Walkable City Architectural Mix Incredible Skyline Romantic Setting, Beautiful Ladies, Corporate Philanthropy, mixed with Individual Philanthropists. Historical City with Historical Homes and Buildings. SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS, Great Arts City .Amazing Venues of All Kinds,Friendly Town, Too Many Amenities to List
I've been obsessed with videos about Pittsburgh. Looks like a cool place to live. I hear the public transpo isn't as great as other cities like Chicago or Boston, one of the main things keepin me from moving there.
Public transportation is pretty good in my opinion. Busses and the T will get you pretty much anywhere in the city
God wanted us to have a sneak peek of Heaven... So he created Pittsburgh!!!
I gonna move to Pittsburgh
City neighborhoods are falling apart rapidly.
Also, some of the best golf courses in the country, along with one of the best symphonies. But, as you said, too many amenities to mention...
I'm stuck here that's why
I moved away when I was 19 and this is 100% true. Clannish is a great description. I now live near Palm Springs, ca and love it.
I get the feeling the fall is special.
James Davies It truly is gorgeous!
My wife and I grew up in Pittsburgh. That's why we live in another county where taxes are low. Ever increasing taxes is the reason my parents moved from Pittsburgh to another county long ago. That's called voting with your feet. Add to that a crappy public transportation system.Just my opinion.
Pittsburgh has beautiful skylines but no jobs so I went to Houston. ..
Do you like Houston ?
i moving to Pittsburgh where are the best place to live
I love Pittsburgh I love my city that's wer I'm from Pittsburgh PA the north side Manchester I love my city mane
"I like Pixburgh", lol...I'm from there, so don't get mad.
Ok Ok ,i get it. Pittsburgh is great!
cheap rent!!!!!???? ....WHERE!!!!???
Really needs nightclubs for dj's and dancing. Feels like the footloose town. Nobody dances. Just clutch a beer and stand around? There should be more.
Was that a red apple?
If I'm single-retired lookin' to relocate to Pitt on a lower micdle-class budget, where might I look for affordable and safe housing?
+John Doe Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Swissvale are my picks.

ThanX ^_^
+John Doe Stay away. Move to a real city like Atlanta. Pittsburgh is a dump.
+John Doe you would want to move to mt washington but the part near the inclines the problem w pittsburgh & i lived here all my life is that that the areas near the city are all becoming cesspits of drugs & gang very few areas close to the actual city are safe places too lives but thats one area id recommend other than that drive 45 min out of the city in any direction & youll find alot of nice places to live w/o the urban crime wave.
Thanks for the great advice! :)
I want to live in Pittsburgh but I can't
I left decades ago. wonder if...
Born there... bea
If not here, then where?
What about Philly?
+Joseph Bellantuono No one gives a fuck about it.
pittsburgh is a great city. not as dangerous as ppl say. don't sell or use drugs or live in the "hood" and it's not dangerous! traffic is terrible so learn back roads lol
...Because it's Pittsburgh!
this is the one I meant to send
We have the absolute best fish sandwiches in the Burgh. We vacation in OC Maryland and it is embarrasing what they call a fish sandwich there.
No place like home.
