On my wife's 2001 Taurus, the DIN tool would not "grab" enough to pull the radio out. So, while applying pressure with the DIN tool on one side, I reached under the glove compartment to push the radio out from behind. It then came out easily. Thanks for the helpful video.
In case it helps someone It's just a matter of cutting the coat hanger (ideally one of those that are shitty for hanging heavy coats because they loose their shape). You can do so just by using one of those pliers that can cut stuff. You can also bend it repeatedly to weak the metal and it will crack by its own. Just, try recreate the shape of those who are used in the video. Don't be shy with the size, I found that, like most things in life, the bigger the better (about a fist length on each side of the U)
What is the job title of someone I can pay to rip out the stereo and put a new one in? I have the same car. The stereo has stopped working and I don't like following instructions on manual tasks. Prefer someone else to do it.
Thanks for taking the time to upload this clip. I found 4 swiss needle files were stiff enough inserted by the handle ends. Just wish my connectors would let go, stuck solid no matter how hard i squeeze the triggers, you made it look easy :-/
I just swapped mine out - my tip to add to this great video would be to tackle it from the passenger seat and needle nose pliers help in wiggling out the yellow one - the other two are much easier!
Fuses for the stereo are in the fuse box, there may be a second fuse box under the hood near the battery. As for tools, I've see a wire coat hanger cut to shape or nails. But, the right tool works best, available at most auto part stores.
Thank you so much, You can buy these removal tools from Reilly's for $8.99, OEM removal tools. I had to junk my car and I don't want to lose the stereo I paid a grand for! Thanks again!
I was able to use four 8d nails, ground the points off, pushed them in snug, then with each hand gripping two of the nail heads and keeping pressure outwards, like in the video, then pulling gently outwards, the radio slides right out. Easy. Since the nails are smooth and don't have the indents like the pullers do, they just slide right out from the slots.
@redgie0151 Usually, with AM and FM not working, this is an antenna problem. Check to make sure the antenna is plugged into the back of the stereo. Antenna is usually in the rear window along with the rear window defrost. If connections can be seen, make sure they are tight too.
@peaanuuttbuttaa Installing an aftermarket stereo, depending on the size of the stereo, you may need and Installation Kit. You may also need an antenna adaptor and wire harness, both of these will save you a major head ache and make the installation much simpler...
Wow you did this perfectly. I have the same radio. Mine won't turn on, so I need to check my fuses, how should i go about that? Also, do I need those din things is there something else I can use?
@detwin2 Try pushing the springs on the sides of the stereo that the keys lock into, into the side of the stereo. This should help to unlock the keys and release to remove.
Purchase the after market wire harness, the original stereo opening is double din. You may or may not need a kit for mounting the DVD player, ask you local installation shop when purchasing stereo to know...
Would I need some sort of shell or something to install an aftermarket stereo in there? The hole is way too big for mine.. also, I don't know how I'd get it back out later on because it doesn't have the holes for the removal tools.
I've got a question about the anti-theft system in these radios that nobody seems to mention. I'm the 3rd owner of my focus so there is no way I can trace it back and find out who the dealer is to get the code, and the guy I bought it from doesn't know it. If I disconnect the car battery before disconnecting the radio would that prevent the anti-theft system from working?
hi, I have the exact same radio and I was wondering if you could explain how the CD button on the right works, is there a changer in the trunk or some inputs there?
Hi, I have a ford ka from 2000 and it also has a quite big radio like in the video. Now I want to buy a smaller radio, but that would leave a big gap in there, right? So what do I have to buy to make the gap look ''nicer''???
@underneaththecar On the package it will say "Stereo Removal Tool" you just use the din style (the horseshoe shaped ones) if there are 2 types. You can get them anywhere that sells ANYTHING for car stereos for just a few bucks... including walmart.
Oh yeah, this vid was incredibly helpful. I'd have gotten pissed and just taken a screw driver and dug the thing out. Where can I get the 2 little U-shaped tools? My radio just went out; no lights, no display, no sound, no nothin. The guide on the back of the plastic door to the fuse box doesn't indicate that radio has it's own fuse and everything else electric in the car works. That being said, is there something like an in-line bus fuse behind the dash or somewhere on the OEM radio's wiring?
Where did you buy the Ford din removal tools, Need to get a pair for my 98' Mercury. I tried hangers ,but didn't work ?. Ps . How much were they ? Thanks Bill
I connected the OEM connectors to the Wiring Harness I bought from amazon and then matched those wires with all the wires on an aftermarket stereo. The only problem is that the new aftermarket stereo won't turn on! My original stereo turned on just fine, but DID not turn on or off with the ignition. What do I do?!
Hi, I have a 2000 ford focus, and trying to figure out what the red blinking light by the emergency flashers is. Do you know what that is for. Please let me know as soon as you get this message. Thank you.
I bought a Ford focus hatchback 2003 , and I need help , my stereo keeps turning off and it's loose on the right side , I think someone tried to steal my stereo , and I need to know how do I connect it again?
i have a 2001 ford focus zx3 hatch back im replacing te rear speakers an i dont know what color the + an the negatives are for both the right rear an the left rear.. ive looked on line but everything i find are the wrong colors..
it was a helpful clip. would be nice if it included the installation aswell so I did not have to go somewhere else. but it was a good video. thank you.
This is fine and all- but can you please tell us- HOW TO GET THE KEYS OUT OF THE RADIO ONCE ITS OUT- those things click in and stay forever. My old radio is on the floor of my car and it is HECK to get those things out. Bought a mod cd version w/ an mp3 jack. Can you help- those things hurt my hands
I am not sure about a code on this one. Most USA models do not require a code. However, European models usually do. Call your local dealership for help on this question.
open the glovebox , and the plastic unde the steering wheel , put your hand on the interior , reach for the stereo , press where is the lock in place , and pull out one side and do this on the other side , the most complex thing i ever did ! trust me ... sorry for bad english ...
Bro i just got this car and realized how lucky we are for TH-cam for teaching us random shit.
Fax bro, TH-cam has saved me from everything this car has thrown at me

For those without the correct tools to remove the radio, I used a coat hanger. Simply cut it with a wire cutter and worked a charm
Not all heroes wear capes
Thank you
In case it helps someone

I watched this video and then went out and replaced my car stereo after nearly a year of my old one not working. Great video, thank you!!
+Becky G :)
What is the job title of someone I can pay to rip out the stereo and put a new one in? I have the same car. The stereo has stopped working and I don't like following instructions on manual tasks. Prefer someone else to do it.
One of the best videos, unlike the rest just shows how to install a radio not how to take the damn thing out in the first place
+m hussn yea i know right
It worked! FYI just stick 4 thing screw drivers and gently pull it out. Also the serial number for my M model is on the right side panel
coat hanger worked ok after some adjustments and all it was was a broken solder joint. Easily fixed and working perfectly
Thanks for taking the time to upload this clip.
I found 4 swiss needle files were stiff enough inserted by the handle ends.
Just wish my connectors would let go, stuck solid no matter how hard i squeeze the triggers, you made it look easy :-/
Correct! A thick wire coat hanger cut to shape works too. However, the correct tool always works best.
I just swapped mine out - my tip to add to this great video would be to tackle it from the passenger seat and needle nose pliers help in wiggling out the yellow one - the other two are much easier!

Many many thanks. Adding a new stereo for a surprise Christmas present. Got a bit stuck until finding your vid. Awesome
What stereo did you buy if I may ask)
Thank you so much, You can buy these removal tools from Reilly's for $8.99, OEM removal tools. I had to junk my car and I don't want to lose the stereo I paid a grand for! Thanks again!
The RIGHT tools, always makes the job easier...
🎉 very helpful, thank you! I hope my new DAB radio will fit...
Smell the stereo for the burnt electronics smell. Also, check ALL fuses, there are two to three to most systems depending on if there is an amplifier.
@redgie0151 Usually, with AM and FM not working, this is an antenna problem. Check to make sure the antenna is plugged into the back of the stereo. Antenna is usually in the rear window along with the rear window defrost. If connections can be seen, make sure they are tight too.

Just needed to get the stereo out for the radio code got it done now thank you xx
The CD button on the stereo is for controlling the rear (trunk) mounted CD changer. If you do not have the rear changer, the button does not work.
@detwin2 Try pushing the springs on the sides of the stereo that the keys lock into, into the side of the stereo. This should help to unlock the keys and release to remove.
great video very helpful but...where do I get the two pull out tools from the ones that go into the holes on the side like a U shape..? thank you
Purchase the after market wire harness, the original stereo opening is double din. You may or may not need a kit for mounting the DVD player, ask you local installation shop when purchasing stereo to know...
There are kits, wire harnesses and antenna adaptors needed for the best and easiest aftermarket installation.
I cut up a wire hanger. Worked perfectly.
Thank you so much this made it easy for me to do this and Walmart has the tools for 7 a set js.
cheers! wasnt putting mine in hard enough, thought it might damage it anything but this video confirms and helped me alot :)
There is usually a trigger on the connectors. Squeezing the trigger into the connector should release the lock and wiggling loose should remove them.
Would I need some sort of shell or something to install an aftermarket stereo in there? The hole is way too big for mine.. also, I don't know how I'd get it back out later on because it doesn't have the holes for the removal tools.

If you do not have those removal loop keys, what's a good substitute? Help please???
hi, I have the exact same radio and I was wondering if you could explain how the CD button on the right works, is there a changer in the trunk or some inputs there?

You will need an aftermarket stereo installation kit. I also suggest purchasing the aftermarket wire harness, save yourself a headache and an hour.
what year focus is this? & i have a 2002 , do you know what kind of wire harness i would need for a new head unit?
Hi thanks for the video, how do I then remove the tools from the radio?
Excellent to the point video. Thank you.
I have a 2001 Ford Focus and i think the fuse is blown for the cigarette lighter. can you make a tut for how to open it and replace the fuse?
@underneaththecar On the package it will say "Stereo Removal Tool" you just use the din style (the horseshoe shaped ones) if there are 2 types. You can get them anywhere that sells ANYTHING for car stereos for just a few bucks... including walmart.

@thehiltonator How would you hold the 4 nails in place though?
Where did you buy the Ford din removal tools, Need to get a pair for my 98' Mercury. I tried hangers ,but didn't work ?. Ps . How much were they ? Thanks Bill
Check the fuse panels, there is usually a second fuse panel under the hood near the battery. There is NO fuse at the lighter.
Have you heard of problems with Ford Focus radios where the FM signal disappears (static only) and if so do you know why?
Ford Escort has the oval faced stereo. Manual AC controls require releasing the cables under the dash... Electronic AC controls will be easier.
The '05 if different, presently I don't have this one available. Already on my list of needed removal guides.
Hi, I have a 2000 ford focus, and trying to figure out what the red blinking light by the emergency flashers is. Do you know what that is for. Please let me know as soon as you get this message. Thank you.
+Maxsteel991 yes or the engine shut off thing - immobiliser
My radio cuts in and out but everything else works fine. so should i take it out and check the antenna connection?
hi! i have that exact radio, and i was wondering whats goes in to the green connectors in the back of the radio,,
I bought a Ford focus hatchback 2003 , and I need help , my stereo keeps turning off and it's loose on the right side , I think someone tried to steal my stereo , and I need to know how do I connect it again?
There are many types and manufacturers for these devices. Try a search for "Aux-in audio devices".
I'm gonna use this to add a Bluetooth radio to my car, thanks!
cool! awesomely helpful! now how to install a new stereo system to the ford focus????????
Check ALL the fuses. There can be two to three for a car stereo.
Are the tools easy to get ?
Any idea how to remove the tools? Mine got stick in the radio and can't get them out?
Thanks! It helped on Mondeo's mk3 6006e as well :)
what year is this for? i am going to have to do my friend's focus 2005 and wondering if its the same situation as this vid :)
Aftermarket kit, wire harness and antenna adaptor may be needed for best installation.
I have a car radio that wont turn on.
There was cold weather that may have mess it up but how do i get my car radio to turn it on again.
Need help pls
i used a wire with diameter of 2.5mm or 3mm not sure
it worked superbly
i have a 2001 ford focus zx3 hatch back im replacing te rear speakers an i dont know what color the + an the negatives are for both the right rear an the left rear.. ive looked on line but everything i find are the wrong colors..
it was a helpful clip. would be nice if it included the installation aswell so I did not have to go somewhere else. but it was a good video. thank you.
Erick Garcia
Erick Garcia in French please
Thank you for making this video.
Really helpful cheers
Top video- very helpful and informative thanks
Where can i buy an adapter kit for my deck to put in my focus? Also where can I buy the din tool thing?
Tools are available at most auto part stores.
Audio cuts in and out? Display cuts in and out or blinks? Radio cuts in and out? Cassette cuts in and out? CD cuts in and out?
on a ford focus cmax 2006, does any other car stereo fit or do i need a special one?
2/4 door hatchback, 4 door sedan or 4 door wagon?
Try your local audio sales shop or auto parts store.
Hi I know this video is old but how do you get the main connection out I can't get it out
The CD button controls the rear (trunk) mounted CD changer if it is installed. Otherwise, this button does nothing.
Very helpful! Thank you
where can I get a replacement anti theft panel for a 2002 ford focus se with the 6 disc CD player?
Helpful, thank you! :)
I don't have this info available at this time. This is on my list to add.
Tried using wire hangers, didnt work, ended up getting one of them stuck, and now theres a piece of hanger stuck inside the slot. what should i do?
There are installation kits available. Some have a blank plate to fill the gap, others will provide a pocket.
Yes but can i put some other radio like Sony or some other cd players ??
Thank you very much for this video, you really helped me!!!
thank you always wondered how they came out
If I want to replace my stereo, which ones will fit or work in my 2002 focus ?
This is the best video thanks took me hrs to try and get my radio out and after watching this I got out
I am not sure about a code on this one. Most USA models do not require a code. However, European models usually do. Call your local dealership for help on this question.
how would you open a stereo that has only two holes instead of four?
Thank you man! It worked great on ford mondeo too :D
what if my radio does not come out? it almost seems to be stuck in there even using the din removal tools...
@brycedeboe17 Yes u do need an adapter. Get an antenna adapter for a volkwagen- Ford uses European parts in their factory radios
Disconnecting the stereo will discharge. Removing one of the battery terminals does the same job.
you can use coat hangers too cut them
Thanx for the idea going to try that
I have heard of stereo codes for Ford vehicles. However, these are not USA vehicles.
I got the radio out with the removal pins, got the code radio is working. How can I get the pins back out there stuck in 😂
Did you ever find out as mine are stuck lol
Using CD's with paper labels or library CD's can jam and cause problems with mechanisms.
I there any other way to move radio ?
And can i put some other Sony radios on my focus 2002 ??
open the glovebox , and the plastic unde the steering wheel , put your hand on the interior , reach for the stereo , press where is the lock in place , and pull out one side and do this on the other side , the most complex thing i ever did ! trust me ... sorry for bad english ...
