Episode 128: Alamogordo, NM: When Your Plans Fail, but You Find Something Even BETTER!!!

  • In this episode we attempt to boondock on BLM land adjacent to White Sands National Park. Unfortunately due to a tough road to navigate going in, our original camping plans failed and left us scrambling at the last minute to find an alternative.
    We were lucky to find ‪@HarvestHosts‬ in nearby Alamogordo, New Mexico where we could stay for the night and regroup. We had a great rest at Desert Lakes Golf Course, and then were able to get a couple more nights at the White Sands KOA in Alamogordo.
    Upon checking in, one of the very helpful staff at the KOA told us about Cloudcroft Brewing, up the mountain about half an hour away. We decided to take the drive and check out their microbrews and wood fired pizza.
    As it turned out, we spent an entire afternoon discovering all the great things surrounding Alamogordo. We're so glad our original plans fell through, because otherwise we may have never discovered this enchanting and beautiful part of New Mexico!!!

    Nice video! We lived in ElPaso 3+yrs long ago and taking trips up there was so much fun. I love Lincoln National forest, so so beautiful! I’m beginning to see a pattern when it comes to ice cream😂😂😂🍨🍦those images just made me want some too👍 Safe travels to you both.

      Yes, ice cream is definitely a thing!! I use it to bribe Bubba into going hiking a lot of the time. 🤣🤣 The one thing Texas has going for it is you can find Blue Bell ice cream everywhere. Yes, that part of New Mexico is really beautiful!!

    Convenient Lil town Alamogordo is.. I use to live in abq and delivered sw wines all over the whole state, Alamogordo and Ruidoso were on my deliveries.. growing town by now, it's 2022 we reside now in CO. You have a lot of great places in that area to visit, white sands, cloud croft, Las cruces, and the desert landscape. Beautiful at sunsets.. very hot during summer. Good foods and good people to help however they can. Look to the skies at dark.. you'll see weird things flying fast and bright sometimes.... ain't saying but ya...

      so how much of the year does Cloudcroft have snow cover? I am thinking about relocating to New Mexico from Wisconsin ( tired of winter) and I see there is a great disc golf course there in Cloudcroft. Do you still have snow cover into the month of May, or does it melt in late March early April?

    • @Harry_At_NewMexico
      @Harry_At_NewMexico ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-zt9ne3zc3s Well we usually average about 1 day of snow every 2 to 3 years here in Alamogordo some 20 minutes away from Cloudcroft however i'd contact the Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce to answer your question(s) more specifically.

    The entrance to the BLM land is a tight one. If your coming in from the direction of Alamogordo it will sneak up on you and make it more difficult to get lined up. Nice boondocking location just the same.

    YES ... next trip towards AZ ...I'll do it ...3 years ago I wanted to stop for the night in Almagordo ... but my phone service went out/& ability to navigate with maps on truck screen was gone (son forget to pay family plan bill!) ...so could not find the RV park. Just kept going headed home towards a known & favorite KOA @ Tucumcari! hit a snow storm up over the mountains ..Corona-vaughn!! ARGHHH ...not fun in my big rig with an impatient semi on my 6!

      Oh, yikes! Doggone kids lol. 😂😂 Those New Mexico passes sure are famous for their sketchy weather. Seems I always get caught in snow going over Raton Pass into Colorado. The whole town of Cloudcroft was just beautiful. We think you would enjoy it.

    DOES ALAMOGORDO STILL GET THE SONIC BOOMS FROM THE AIR BASE ????? THE SOUNDS OF FREEDOM. LOVE THAT. AND THE WALMART HAD THE CHEAPEST GAS WHEN WE VISITED.

    • @TipsyMarlinTravels
      @TipsyMarlinTravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We didn't hear any booms coming from the base, but we were only there for a couple of nights. We know what you mean though - we hear them in Yuma when the tanks at the proving grounds are doing exercises.
