- Will it start? Reviving Custom Motorcycle Parked for 20 years!
Our 2024 SmokeOut Build has started with a revival. This custom hand built motorcycle, powered by a big inch @SSCycleInc motor sat for years. After the owner passed away recently I purchased it from the family with two goals. To revive the bike one last time in it's original frame, then use the drivetrain in a fresh skinny 70s style chopper the original owner would be proud of. First step, bring this dormant Harley Davidson Evolution style V-Twin back to life!

Most important part of the replacement starter is the ground! A big fat cable, as I've been told the big ci engines from the late 90's kept burning out batteries till they finally understood it was related to the ground/negative cable. From the stories, you could start 100 ci engines with regular HD starter if done this way.
Make sure all connectors are clean to metal. I agree with checking the ground as well.
I would love to RIDE THAT HARLEY DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE
At the Bike week
Clean connections for sure.
Cool bike... fun stuff :-)
Thanks! 👍
Johnathan Winters tackles Custom Motorcycle!!! lol (-:
Truly enjoy what you did and what you are doing with this build. What a way to pay respect to the lady who had it built and rode it! I’m looking forward to see what comes next!
Very cool old bike, I love your enthusiasm man, I think that family were wise to each out to ya... says alot about you bud... your trusted and respected.... God bless brother
Thanks!
Thank you!!!!
Hopefully this gets shared enough that someone that knows who built it will come forward
That would be amazing.
That was a blast to watch, thanks for sharing 👍 cannot wait to see how this project moves forward, super excited for you 🤙🤞👏💯
Thanks so much!!
Cool.. I'm glad it didn't blow up. Has that old classic HD sound.
@MrsMonkey. I would paint it black maybe gold with purple pinstripe to so respect to the original owners purple color 👍🏼
Kept screamin push in the compression releases! Lol. Seen many a starters burnt up by not using the compression releases when starting
She would be sooooo happy to hear her baby again. Bravo
Awesome job getting it running thanks for sharing this video stay safe out there
Ricky Zaring had a post on a Facebook page about use a 1997 dodge intrepid 3.3 V6 . He said change nose cone and shaft now you have a high torque starter for big inch.
Hated to miss the Premier! Dr. Harley had a live and was doing a charity raffle...
Derek knows some shit no doubt ! 2 stroke lubes the top end at first startup !
Loved getting to watch you working on the bike a talking about the process. Would have really enjoyed seeing you rebuilding the carb a bit as well
Honest to God, I'm laughing with you, not at you. Really looking forward to the continuation of this project as with the rest.
I don't know what the hell you woke from the dead but it do know that waking from the dead and sound like that then it's a beast.
Crazy beautiful... Kind of stealth fighter lines.
Hot damn that's a satisfying sound! Congratulations!
i am jazzed you got it started. shows you do know what you are doing. good vid and just have fun.
Awesome video and story that motor is a piece of art it looks well made
This is cool ..probably easy enough to just pull the starter and clean up the brushes and armature
Natalie was a badass! 😎 that motor sounds strong 💪
If you need main jets or pilot jets for the S&S carburetor, I have a bunch from back when I had my shovel Head and that had a lot of work done to it. If you need them, give me a shout.
Anytime you have a carb torn down don't forget to check the float and make sure it's air tight.
Great video and looking forward to see what you end up with 👍
Roll back tire onto a block of wood and slide your scissors jack under it. Jack it up and put a bigger block under back tire and drop it down. Then slide your jack under it. I got a slammed 02 FXD and that's what I have to do to get it on my jack
I put a drag specialities high torque chrome on my 2010 ultra and couldn’t be happier.
I’ve had a all balls starter on my high compression twin cam for years. I’m very happy with it.
So cool the family got to hear it rumble to life one last time, before it begins it new journey as 2 bikes.
I was going to sit quietly, but.. seeing as you've ordered the rolling chassis my mind's eye had pictured, I challenge you to consider a Jockey Shift and Foot Clutch.. ..and a Kickstart. I think the comments about a heavy duty ground are spot on (it's even crossed my mind, maybe someone tried an aircraft starting trolley, but in a world of conjecture, that more likely reflects poorly on me🙄). 'Shame that bolt couldn't be drilled, though it got the job done, so.. forward!! - That motor sounds soooooo goooood....
Been meaning to mention the Dyna's spokes might benefit from Zebrite Stove Polish, it kind of treats corrosion whilst hiding it..
It... Is... ALIVE!!!
Always a blast to watch your vids, and hear your thoughts and explanations.

That’s going to be a bad ass motor I was watching we are all sick in my house so I was watching from the bed lol so I couldn’t comment but great job buddy
It looks like you have a factory Harley softail frame. 86-87 maybe. The factory neck is there, they just covered all the info. Those little rectangular openings under the backbone hold the factory handlebar electrical connections. There should also be a serial number in the front motor mount. Facing towards the back. You probably already have a good hi torque starter in that bike. It just needs a rebuild probably or the bendix screw worked loose. It’s inside that jack shaft on the primary side. Inside that small gear that turns the clutch basket when you engage the starter. Good luck brother!!
The frame has a VIN, it’s not a Harley frame, that was added in later where the breakers go.
You may want to reach out to Arlen Ness, Martin Brothers and maybe even Rick Fairless for a few of the custom guys way back then.
Puking oil on a evo that sat . Tap the oil pump check ball is probably stuck . You the man love the channel. I'm sure I'm late to the party but sweet bike !!!
I've only got a handful of TH-cam videos up and I can't beleive how often trash trucks, pools being built and Gardners are in front of my house. Exciting build and rad that it started. Cheers
Get ready, they will find you!
I would go with a Spyke starter...made for high compression big inch motors. Looking at sheetmetal, it strongly resembles the building style of early Arlen Ness design. Look up his early builds from that time period. Cheers from Ohio.
That is a cool bike. Wish it was mine to rebuild. Love the styling.
Denso 1.4 should be fine.i had a 1993 96 inch never had a problem with it 👌✌️
I love hearing you explain your “ theory”! You’re a natural!
Great video. I know you claim to be a idiot and don’t know what you’re doing but truth be told brother you really have a set of skills most don’t have and the passion you have is fantastic you really love this shit. I can’t wait to see how this all comes together. I would love to meet you and just talk a little. Thanks for this upload. Much appreciated sir.
That was great to watch
Yes, sometimes not easy to get those old bikes running. But hell of an effort.
I’ve had a Big Dawg starter in my evo since 1999. I actually installed the button on the end about 10 years ago to push in to start right at the starter. Been very happy, I would recommend
I’ll look them up!
Like you said, not my style but it's a fantastic piece of work.
Exactly.
I own two Big Dog Motorcycles with a 117 and a 107. It isn't just a good starter. You need something like this as well.
CompuFire 10/84 Starter Gear Set - 54002
All Balls starter 2.0 kw starter..... Same basic starter used on a Porsche Or take the starter to a electrical shop and have them rewire it. Comp-u-fire works great too..same 2kw..
The front end looks like it's off of a late 90's Suzuki Marauder.
Looks like this could've/may be a graft bike.
I don't know if many who have seen any since the 70s.
I used Spyke starters on a HD 103 and S&S 113 with no problems
IT’S ALIVE!!!!!🥹 GREAT video! You know they have a Monkey whiskey…. Might not ruin cameras🤷🏼♂️🤪🤙🏼
Ultima starter! I use a 2.7kw and it fires my super high compression 113” evo very easily
You are definitely an optimist. Sounds like a great project. I wouldn't have expected it to run knowing the storage history! Happy New Year! Keep up the great videos. Hope your camera situation gets sorted out! LoL!!
That bike was built to a real high standard and that tank was ugly as sin but what a shame to destroy it. Pulling the engine would be time consuming but you have an engine stand to proof run it !
That said love your videos. Cheers 🇬🇧
You want at least a 1.4 and up..probably a 1.7. look at the starter and what way the solenoid is sitting and what size the studs are on. Is it a left side drive trans or right side drive. Maybe pull it out and send pics to one of the manufacturers to match it. Lots of different configuration
"Ran when parked..." Looks like you've got a really hot video for us.
That's funny Derek just mentioned you in a video too
The hell he did!
@@ProfessionalMonkey in the video where he was working on finishing up the duster he gave away.
God Bless you and your Family . I know what ever you build will be a great Bike .
Thanks 👍
To use All Balls you need to have a battery that has at least 300 cca. Make sure you have really good starter and battery cables.
I had good luck using Spyke starters on big cube engines. Their not cheep
Very Cool
And welcome to the wonderful world of kick arse evos lol
These starters can be rebuilt pretty cheap. If you get a new one the ultima 1.7 is a killer one thats inexpensive... for what it is
Wow sounds good to me. Can't wait to see it on the Road!
Sucks that you had to destroy art to make it work, but it is what it is. I am intrigued by this journey. Keep up the great work!!!
This bike isn't art. It's junk
Respect all the way you can get away with saying what needs to be said seen this exact thing just yesterday in Queensland Australia
Said to the miss this guy is going to expire soon ridding like this
Nice way to start the new Year, content was awesome 👍
Im looking forward to seeing this vid!!, its rare i get a chance to catch the premieres.
Kicks off at 8!
You are entertaining😂 bike looks like it's on an intervenes. Subbing. Hi from Canada
Thank you! It kind of was on an IV!
That's the starter drive not backing off. Armatures are easy to rebuild. So if the drive has no tension and spins or goes zing..it the drive. Easy to replace. Before taking a starter apart do a scribe mark on all pieces for alignment. Then the main check is the play of the armature while still together. Is it loose?
I used a all balls starter on my bike very happy with it.
Great start to the journey!
Glad she ran and sounded nice👍
Hey Pro Monkey! The 90's go to custom color was purple, I know, I was there, I was puttin it down on custom cars! Especially on power sports. If it was cool, it had purple on it! Now I see it, and I agree, it's like, WTH?!! 😅 Cool content my friend!
That bike was built back when Harleys had a 1 year wait and was selling for way over sticker. Companies like cmc was coming out to fill the gap.. probably cheaper to build the one you wanted than buy a new HD
bike looks like something arlen's shop would have built
Woo hoo almost thirsty Thursday …..🤘🏼⚡️🤘🏼
Sounds bad ass!
I had the exact same push rod tubes on my bottom breather nose cone 131" Evo custom Fatboy which was a Joe Milloy build. Once you loosen the set screws and they thread screw together. There is an oddball o ring the middle but I wouldn't reuse them once you loosen them, I replaced mine with normal PR tubes. I replaced the engine with an 80" because it wasn't streetable with a 640 cam and compression at 11.8:1 it's WOT or nothing. Timing curve and cam should get you close to the size without measuring.
You should include Natalie in whatever you name the bike. It would be a good way to further honor Natalie and her original build.
I have a plan for a tribute on the new build.
I wonder if Arlen built that bike... that is his style to the T
Spyke starter is the ticket
Couldn't u have tried to take off the rocker box to get to the bolt that held the tank? Just curious...
Nope. The rocker has to lift off and wouldn’t clear.
Noted.
Bottom line, you got it to run, a man of your world. Sounded good big cam for sure!
A new name, Purple Anchor. You'll know about the engine, just wait.
It ran great if you watched the video…
Bills the perfect guy for that frame......
it just don't seem like you're a type
Hi Torque Starters, Bell Flower, CA is the only starter that lasted for me in my big inch EVO's. Looks like Pro One heads and jugs
. give us a better view of the heads.
Starter may be high end, sounds like starter drive is bad it can be replaced. Would save you a lot of cash I use all balls starter drives.
is it a TITAN, they were THE SHIT in the mid to late 90's
Not a titan. One off build.
Its not necessarily the NAME on the starter, its how much power said starter puts out. Ive had starters in my small block chevy builds with high compression and big cams that a GM starter wouldnt work on that I swear were "Daves starters" or "Starters by Stan" kind of things but they worked. Look for o?e that has the power you need and not a name thaf you recognize because, honestly, I think theres like 10 main starter parts builders in the country!! Lol😂😂
"Should we move the fule..."
No, no. No OSHA here.
I'm behind on your videos, but might want to consider having the original starter rebuilt. I had an uncommon racecar that I had to get the stock starter rebuilt into a high compression one.
Pull the starter grease the ends of the armature, clean the copper and check the brushes?
ok. I'll make this as short as possible. I own a 100+inch S&S motor that I had built in 2000. I am still riding the custom I built back then, and I will tell you that you will never get it to reliably start with anything remotely like a stock starter. I use a Spyke starter on mine pushed with a lithium battery. be sure you check your solenoid. I have had a lot of problems with the contact wheel on the inside of it arcing and having piss-poor connections. also a new starter relay after all these years that it sat. use an Acel relay if you can find one. these motors do not like a lot of enrichment to start. I very seldom ever use the enrichment lever. 4 or five pumps of the throttle is all it takes. Get it up to about 1500 RPM for a bit to get the oil flowing good and then let it idle at around 1000 RPM. Beautiful. powerful motors that will outrun almost anything else on 2 wheels. That G carburetor is a perfect match for that motor. after hearing it run for the short time you had it running. I could tell what you had from the sound of it. I've been building and riding for over 50 years. Any questions. just drop me a line. Remember....Spyke starters. (sorry. it wasn't short!) CJ
Almost looks like a custom from Bobby B’s boss Harley’s in Coconut creek
it has a lott of the lines that billy lane used on his bikes did you look into guys like billy lane or indian larry as the builder of this bike
It was built before the craze hit so not likely. This was built in 1997z
bikes are best to look at but that’s as far as i go watching Orange County Choppers minus the drama arguing neat bikes. Custom bikes sounds like i’m not an engineer but they need to have least one rule be able to remove said battery and fuel tank down the road for restorations different paint jobs and be able to get to everything. Barney bike hey what ever floats ones boat.
Are you going to Gibbstown Bike Fest ??
Don’t know, doubt it. My schedule is packed up this year.
