I started out on a 1981 ( in 1981 ) Yamaha 750 Virago & have owned all the major metric brands through the years & have enjoyed them all . I currently ride a 2022 Tri-Glide CVO “ my 9th Harley “ nothing matches a Harley for the social component , patriotism & what I call that internal & external happiness every time I see feel & ride my Harley !!!
I love the Icon Collection concept. They all have been beautiful tributes to nostalgia, some real eye candy, I dig 'em. What I'm curious about is if they make them a different model from the existing line up. The Revival and the Highway Kings were new retro mod models, very cool, but the El Diablo was really just a different paint set on the existing Low Rider ST (maybe they could have added a tour pack to make it a version of the FXRTD). When they do an Icon, I would like to see a new model variation with different tins or trim, For example if they do a Softail, maybe a modern version of the Softail Custon with the bobtail fender, two up seat, lots of chrome and a raked front end with laced wheels. Or maybe some retro mod version of some classic Willie G designs like the Sturgis or the '71 Super Glide. I'm kinda hoping for a version of my favorite Willie G classic the FXCR Cafe Racer. Love your channel, keep up the good work sir!
I have to agree with you, it definitely feels like they put all the effort into the Revival, then let the ball down with the El Diablo. I think a modern take on the Cafe Racer would be an easy win for them.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. If you put the 5 gallon tank, flipped rear fender, and 21" front tire, you'd look pretty close. I read the springer doesn't work well with anti-lock brakes so Harley let it go. I think a future Icon will be a XLCR based on the Revmax Bronx platform. They released pics showing a model like that a few years back.
Can't knock the metric years for many of us. My journey started with a '79 Honda CX500 Custom, '84 Honda Shadow, 2004 Suzuki Volusia 800T before finally making the jump to my 2008 HD Ultra Classic(bought used) & my 2011 Tri-Glide(bought used), both I still have. The Suzuki was the only one that was bought new.
I used to have the touring version of the Honda CX500. It was the same engine but it was called the GL500 Silverwing interstate. Lots of great memories on that bike.
In 1984 I turned 34 and had been a full-time truck driver for 10 years. I knew right off that was not your dad on the bike but I did wonder if that was your mother.🤔😉 If it was, your dad was a lucky man.😂😆😉 Now in all seriousness you are a lucky man for getting to ride with your dad that way. Later years after dad retired he got a 49cc step-through scooter. He rode around the country roads he had a blast he loved that thing. I had a Gold Wing at the time and I would try to follow him around but that didn't last too long. I love all motorcycles I always have. At 60 years old I bought my first Harley. It is a Electra Glide I am 73 years old still riding the same old Harley. Be careful, ride safe.
I definitely think they should do something with the 40th anniversary of the Softail but don’t think it should be for the Standard. IMO, the most iconic Softail of all of them is the FatBoy. So how bout either a special 40th anniversary or CVO one of them? Second most iconic (again IMO) is the Heritage. Same thinking here. Will the MoCo announce something like that in 2 weeks? I doubt it.
just put a 119 in my 2023 FXST. If I had not just done this ...Big yes, I would buy a 2024 with the 117. Heck, I would like to see a big Revmax motor in a softtail frame, too
I think if they were going to do an icon Softail it would have to be a springer. The problem is the standard doesn’t look that different from the first Softail.
Great video, I'm not sure you're right but I do agree with you that HD should do that to celebrate 40 years, it'll be cool. See you on the 24th. God bless and keep on riding 🙏🏼
Great video. I think you’re on to something. That is very, very possible. I’m with you…it’s a great idea! I grew up in MO (Troy)and my first street bike was a 1984 Honda Shadow. Bought it used as a high school graduation present to myself in 1988. My older brother lent me the money. Loved that bike. And you hit it right on the head when you said it solidified your love for motorcycles and enabled you to ride when you were young. I’ve never been without at least one bike in the garage since then. I now live in AZ where I ride every day year round. Keep making great videos. You do a fantastic job. Always informative.
Great trip down memory lane. Wonderful video, thank you. In 1984 I was 20. I’ve had motorcycles all my life, but didn’t acquire a Harley until 2017. Just to see what it was all about, I bought a new M8 Ultra Limited. I now own 8 Harleys, hah! Love them and the history. I’m thinking you’re pretty accurate with this call for the next Icon model. I really like these models and the attention they bring. You do some great videos. I’m subscribing. 👍
You are making me feel nostalgic as well.. MY earliest memory of motorcycles, were my uncles late 70s/ early 80s Honda shadows, guessing 750s. Remember my younger uncle pulling up to my grandparent's house when i was maybe 6 or 7, and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I also remember taking rides though the countryside, with my white 3/4 helmet. I had to be 9 or 10. All i know is I LIKE BIKE!
Here’s my take on it; Softail with a Revo Max? The Revo Max platform is in the Pan America, the Sportster and ? It may make sense to have the icon series with the EVO but that engine was tossed out a while back. I would purchase an icon soft tail with an M8 117, only if it had alloy wheels and looked light something that maybe came from “The Bronx.” Hehe
"The Bikeriders" is going to hit, it's going to hit hard. The first "Biker" film with top drawer direction, writing and acting. What's the aesthetic? 1960's FL/FLH's, watch the new and used Heritage and Road King market explode.
I wish they would come out with a new Harley Davidson pro Street breakout… I had a 2016 and I wish I still had it… One of the most beautiful bikes Harley Davidson ever made
I think you're spot on with your prediction for the icon softail. That would be cool. My 1st harley was in 1997. A road king. I was on a waiting list for 8 months to get it. Great bike. Evo motor at it best.
Great thoughts on this one...with 40 years under the belt for the softail it would be a great time to bring out an icon...it would also aid in popularity of the softail standard, its a great bike!
Your idea of an Icon model based on the 40th anniversary of the softail makes sense. I do like the mock up you did with the sissy bar. For me im just not willing to spend money on any new bike. I will just enjoy riding and live with repairs of the one I already own as I am committee to zero debt living. Just me tho.
Past FXR Evo's.... '84 FXRT & '86 FXRS "Liberty Edition".... one word... dependable I like your idea of the Icon model, if that comes, I hope they put a speedometer that does not look like cheap $hit, as is on the Softail standard and other modesl. Thanks for the Vid !
I would buy one in a heart beat . Even though I was kinda forced into a trike due to injuries. It would be my ride by myself without my wife who loves to ride. I would give anything to have an original Soft Tail. The memories alone would be worth the cost. Harley you gotta do it.
I have a 2003 road king and I put a fairing on it so it’s not completely stock and I have hard bags on it my only problem with it is that it’s got wire rims and it has a little wobble on the hi way from the rims in my opinion it is just not good for the high speed on the highway but it’s not really fast enough for me to say I don’t ride it hard but it does have a wobble and you have to be going fast to feel it and it’s something that you have to keep moving when it happens so don’t hit the brakes and you will be able to keep going
You may have a bad wheel, tire, tire balance issue but not all spoke wheels are like this. I would take it off and have the balance checked, if possible check the wheel for trueness…
What bike did Willie G have the most influence on? I think I seen/read that the party this summer at H-D head quarters will to tp celebrate and honour Willie G. As such maybe the next Icon bike will be based on whatever bike Willie G had the most influence over in his day?
Love my 21 Softail Standard, I would trade it in for a '24 with a 117 like you had it. I'd keep my bags so I could tour with it when I go long distance. I think you're on to something here.
Mike, I am not sure about a new soft tail. Not sure about anything in these times. But If what I am hearing is correct you might get your wish on getting a new Street Glide or Road Glide. I am invited to my local dealership on the 24th for the VIP after hours reveal of the new Glides with some of the CVO's stuff on the Specials. Supposedly they will have at least one of the models to show us and talk about it. We will be able to sit it(I'm sure we can't ride it). I made it Clear, I didn't want to come IF they were not going to have one. He called me again today to let me know they are supposed to have one. Who Knows? He told me that the MSRP will only be $150.00 more than last year. I am pretty sure? I am not telling you nothing you don't already know. Oh and I enjoy watching this.
80s were a great time to grow up. I grew up woods riding and mx background.. Harley does need to do a throwback softail. I’d have to seriously consider one if they did a good job makin it look like that ‘84. Great videos. Love your channel
Looks aren't everything. It would have to sound and feel like the '84, and that is no longer possible. Sad what H-D has become. I have an '89 FXRS Low Rider, and I will keep it for the rest of my life.
Harley has been using the mono-shock since 1958 and Indian has been using it since 1942 (I believe) but I don't know for sure when Harley started calling them Softails, so you could very well be right.
1958 is when the duo glide came out, duo referring to the 2 shocks on each side of the frame, I am unaware if a Mono shock (single) design before 2018. My dad’s 1988 softail has 2 shocks underneath.
I got a 1986 FXSTC that I bought in 1994 and I will never part with it. They should do a Springer Softail icon or a FXSTC. But needs to have the bobtail rear fender.
I think HD should phase out most current bikes except the Grand Americans. Then just bring back old ones with lower prices to preserve the value of the current bikes...
I am waiting on a Revolution Max Icon bike. Not saying it would be a good idea but that is the basis of the new Sportsters and honestly none of the bikes they have now remind me of one. Why not an icon based on the Road Glide?
No disrespect, but I think due to the HD Homecoming Rally in Milwaukee being a celebration of Willie G, the Icon series will be dedicated to Willie G. Not sure in what form, just my guess.
There won't be a road glide special or street glide special. I'm guessing there will be standard entry level models with 117s in them and the st models will become the new cvo models with the new vvt motor and the new fairing designs and dash
Guarantee they'll mess it up though and black it out like they did with the El Diablo Lowrider ST....makes no sense because it wasn't blacked out back in the day.
The Softail standard today looks nothing like the original. I recently bought a one owner 2009 Softail Custom which were only made from 2007-2010 but that is what I think of when I think of a Harley Davidson.
I think for 2024 Harley is going to give us the same old tired used over and over again models. The only exception will be new color, badge and higher price tag. I hope I am wrong!
@@RafaelJimenez-hz9gu well they have had three Icon models, two with the same platform. So I’m not sure how that is them using same old tired model over and over again, like you mentioned?
@@brendan_13 ok let’s see, do they offer a reverse? Do the models come with all LED lights? Hell the ultra limited still comes with incandescent bulbs You still have to add the WHIM if you want to go wireless You can put a 2023 ultra classic and 2014 ultra classic and besides the color ok and the miter the bike is pretty much the same That is what I mean. Oh of course you can go CVO, but even then do you get a reverse? Hell the GOLDWING has it. Ok fine the price has changed, yup it is higher
@@RafaelJimenez-hz9gu well why would you want LEDs on a bike that’s meant to represent a bike from the 60’s, I know I wouldn’t. This still doesn’t answer why they keep over using models for the ICON collection like you are saying? You do know what the ICON collection is right?
@@RidingintheOzarks Have you heard anything about a 30th Anniversary Roadking being unveiled in March? H-D offered a limited edition (numbered) 30th Anniversary Fatboy in 2020 (1990-2020). Hoping they'll do the same for the Roadking (1994-2024). IF they do, I'm going for it!! Thanks for you thoughts & feedback! Mike Ras~ Algonquin, IL :)
It’s a great idea but I don’t think Harley will do it. They’re focus is always on the bigger high end touring bikes. I was surprised when they did the El Diablo so what do I know
Whatever Harley decides to do, it wont be to where majority of riders can afford it. HD just cant settle for 50% profit margin, it has to be 100%. There are strengths in numbers, but the metric bikes out-number HD 5-1.
Ok Harleys profits are public knowledge and they don’t make those levels, it’s closer to 10-15% and Harley is the best selling brand in the us with like 40% markets share for bikes over 600cc’s. In my world more people are riding Harleys than metric. I’m not saying you’re wrong I am saying your perception is different based on your world. Does Honda out sell HD absolutely, and if you want talk globally it might be 5-1 but HD doesn’t make affordable entry level bikes either.
Because today’s Harley Davidson board of directors are the company, no I don’t see Harley making any real world connections with their customer base. Suits who don’t ride are running the company.
The fat Bob needs a fat tank and move the instrument panel off the tank onto the bars. Seriously we do not need another Softail that looks like a bike from 40 years ago !!!! 😢
I would not buy anything with an M8 engine in it. It would be an insult to the original Softail. I also would not buy any bike with tube type tires. I have almost been killed by them, they have cost me thousands of dollars in towing charges, motel stays, and expensive dealer flat repairs.
I started out on a 1981 ( in 1981 ) Yamaha 750 Virago & have owned all the major metric brands through the years & have enjoyed them all . Then absolutely
And a dove tail rear

1949 Hydra Glide revival motorcycle would be fantastic, first year of the hydraulic front-end.
I think it would be great if they did do a ICON softail
Ya, but they really have to redesign the gas tank on it, it don’t match the rest of the bike.
Great video Mike - love your content and thanks for sharing the story about your dad and his springer!
Glad you enjoyed it
I think you are right. It will defo be a Softail Model for the Icon. I'm still hoping either the Softail Standard or Street Bob. Great Vid! 👍
Thanks!
I know what the 2024 Icon model will be. Our full report will come out tomorrow, but let's just say you have to look back a LOT more than 40 years.
Hi Dennis, well I will be looking for the article! You’re always spot on. Thanks!

I agree icons are going to be annually softballs turn but they need a expensive bike to limit production 117 might do it
Great opportunity for this idea , Mike I had been out of High School 10 years and married to my second wife when you were 13 years old
How about going way back with an electric board track racere??.What would that look like. Love your videos brother. Keep the round side down.
Would be nice with a 117 👍 yes!!
TC Bros makes a springer for M8 softails
I was thinking a softail springer

I still have my 1985 FXST
I still have my 1987 FXSTC runs great and still turns heads.
Harley has been using the mono-shock since 1958 and Indian has been using it since 1942 (I believe) but I don't know for sure when Harley started calling them Softails, so you could very well be right.

bring back a springer model!

Why not an icon based on the Road Glide?
1984 model year was first year for the Softail, but was never called a Standard.
They may not have called it Standard then but it was the FXST which is called the Softail Standard now.
I think if there is a new icon Softail they may or could do a Fatboy being it is pretty iconic and Terminator was also 84, but I am sure I am wrong
Next year is the Fatboys anniversary, it was released in 1990
Bring back the soft tail slim!!!
CALL ME CRAZY... I wish HONDA would UP the CC on their Fury. Great custom platform. sorry about the off topic comment.
How about a new CVO springer?
No disrespect, but I think due to the HD Homecoming Rally in Milwaukee being a celebration of Willie G, the Icon series will be dedicated to Willie G. Not sure in what form, just my guess.
There won't be a road glide special or street glide special. I'm guessing there will be standard entry level models with 117s in them and the st models will become the new cvo models with the new vvt motor and the new fairing designs and dash
motorcycle.com has pretty much confirmed this in last few days and Harley released a post about it earlier
Well said
I just hope they make it affordable
An icon bike affordable? Ur nuts
I really believe Harley will only do whatever it takes to sell bikes to dealers. As you have said, dealers are the customer.
Revival model will be the HydraGlide
Saw the article that came out today… a worthy choice but I like the 84 better
Springer. Maybe a Crossbones 😎
My punt is it will be a historical Sportster 🎉
Guarantee they'll mess it up though and black it out like they did with the El Diablo Lowrider ST....makes no sense because it wasn't blacked out back in the day.
Also, a CVO FXR
The Softail standard today looks nothing like the original. I recently bought a one owner 2009 Softail Custom which were only made from 2007-2010 but that is what I think of when I think of a Harley Davidson.
They had the Softail Custom in the 90’s with the evo as well.
@@brendan_13 , yep. That is when I first saw Harley which is why I think of the Softail custom when I think of Harley.
@@Dave-sw2dm and rightly so, it’s such a great looking bike.
i have a 2010 harley fatboy lo i still like it
The new softails don't look as good as the ones from 80s and 90s. The frame made those bikes.
I was thinking 30 years of the Road King this year.
I think for 2024 Harley is going to give us the same old tired used over and over again models. The only exception will be new color, badge and higher price tag. I hope I am wrong!
In what way have the models been over used in the Icons collection?
@@brendan_13 oh boy, if you don’t know I can’t help you.
Hell the ultra limited still comes with incandescent bulbs
You still have to add the WHIM if you want to go wireless
You can put a 2023 ultra classic and 2014 ultra classic and besides the color ok and the miter the bike is pretty much the same
That is what I mean.
I think it’s a great idea! 👍 Hope H-D had the same idea! We’ll see…🤞
I hope so too!
Awesome
It’s a great idea but I don’t think Harley will do it. They’re focus is always on the bigger high end touring bikes. I was surprised when they did the El Diablo so what do I know
Next Icon will be a Hydra Glide.
No doubt.
You heard it here first.
I heard it from Dennis Chung the day I out this video out...
Thanks!
Thank You!!
I would buy a standard in a heartbeat if they got rid of that 3 gal tank and ugly mag wheels they put on it now
CVO Pan America incoming
1984 FXSTC and 2006 FXSTC RULES
I like the Idea but unfortunately Harley is out of touch. High dollar CVOs is what they want to sell.
And Matt Laidlaw agrees
Because today’s Harley Davidson board of directors are the company, no I don’t see Harley making any real world connections with their customer base. Suits who don’t ride are running the company.
Well I can’t say about the Board but I have meet some other suits in the company and they rode just fine, I did a 100 mile ride with them at Sturgis.
Fxlrst came out in 2022
I want on a M8 engine if I need a new bike it will be a Indian or a Kawasaki
Sporters 72
The fat Bob needs a fat tank and move the instrument panel off the tank onto the bars.
Seriously we do not need another Softail that looks like a bike from 40 years ago !!!! 😢
I would not buy anything with an M8 engine in it. It would be an insult to the original Softail. I also would not buy any bike with tube type tires. I have almost been killed by them, they have cost me thousands of dollars in towing charges, motel stays, and expensive dealer flat repairs.
Putting a silk shirt on a pig doesn't make it iconic. The current standard softail is one of the ugliest bikes harley has ever put out.
my friend wainted 2 years for a 1992 fatboy
An original 1st yearFat boy would sell. Early years were best. They've gotten uglier and gaudy through the years.
Hell no
I have been riding since 67 got first Harley 1980
