@Yuvi A you can't go wrong. They're user friendly, everything is huge and beefy plus field strip is straightforward....you'll love the thing, it's a fine rifle. I'm wondering why it took me so long to buy one considering how long I've wanted one. I lucked into mine 5 minutes after it was put out on consignment....right place right time right price.
Still using the M-14 in Basic Training at Ft Lewis in late 1969. Fiberglass stocks on the one I used. Not introduced to the M-16 until AIT January '70.
I have one just like it,wood stock and all. Mine also has a beautiful wood stock. I took the scope off of my Ruger Redhawk and installed on the rifle. Since I've gotten old (60's)the long eye relief scope really helps. The gun runs flawlessly and is plenty accurate.It can be a little heavy to carry all day in the woods,but I really don't care. A fine gun,in my opinion.
That's awesome, I can't wait to see what you do to it, I miss my Socom 16. I had to sell it to pay for my mother's funeral. Maybe one day I'll get one.

Personally I would keep the wood stock. Dents, dings and scratches give the rifle character.

Isn't it a pain in the a s s to replace the barrel on the M1A??...compared to say an AR?...

I just picked one up today from PSA for 1250, free shipping. I have owned the 16 in the past, but feel an 18 makes better use of the .308 cartridge...

Wood stocks were meant to be beat up just like in wars prior to Vietnam. Looks cool.

Yea I had to sell my 16 in a divorce 6 yrs ago, and just picked up the socom 18 today... being single isn't so bad. ;-)

I went through exactly the same thing. The good news is you get to rebuild the ultimate arsenal going by what you know now.
