How To Actually Be Happier In 2024 (According to the Stoics)

  • Stoicism is a practical philosophy with the aim of living a meaningful life, and becoming one’s best self.
The Stoics believed in living a virtuous life, one with the potential to bring us personal happiness and fulfillment. And that’s one of the reasons a person may choose to live after their fashion. After all, what good is philosophy if it doesn’t ultimately bring us happiness? But in Stoic philosophy, it’s the pursuit of virtue and good character that allows us to get there. For the Stoic, the pursuit of virtue is the pursuit of happiness. If we can live virtuously, a good life will follow.
“A good character is the only guarantee of everlasting, carefree happiness.” - Seneca, Letters from a Stoic
In this video Ryan Holiday shares some Stoic principles that can help us become better, happier people.

    1) Focus on what you control
    2) Do good to others
    3) Do less of unnecessary things and more of essential things
    4) Be grateful
    5) Don't seek external approval nor admiration
    6) Challenge yourself
    7) Laugh
    8) Accept things as they are
    9) Realize: you have everything you need
    10) Embrace adversity

@@Psicokass Thanks for pointing it out so nobody gets confused. I decided to go with "do good to others" because Ryan was referring to Marcus Aurelius's words "The fruit of this life is good character and acts for the common good." Which states that any good deeds you do are for the sake of making a positive impact on others and the world. "Do good to feel good" implies that your main motivation is feeling good about yourself instead of making the world a better place.

Watching this reminded me of things I did during 2020. Reading Marcus Aurelius' Meditations helped me get through a year that destroyed a lot of people that I knew. It was realizing not everything can be controlled, but remembering that you can still find happiness in the things you can control.
Next year is going to be an election year everywhere. All signs point that things will get really ugly. I will need to retake Stoic philosophy for my own sake.

Even though I am not a really a stoic (Marcus Aurelius had an intluence on me, but I am more into Nietzsche and Sartre), I agree with every single thing, that you said. I would personally add one more thing from myself. If you want to do something, but your afraid, just do it. You want to ask someone out or ask for a pay rise. Go ahead. Even if you get rejected, doing what you really want gives happiness, that is worth the pain of potential rejection.

About principle number four, many misunderstand it. It's not about settling for less or accepting financial hardship. Rather, it's about aspiring for more without being bound by these desires, while expressing gratitude to God for the blessings already received. It's important to understand that God is willing to grant our wishes, as long as they don't impinge upon another's free will. This principle emphasizes the balance between ambition, detachment, and gratitude.

What's up to us and what's not up to us is a pretty complex subject and not a black and white issue so it's hard to nail down. There's not even a consensus if we have free will or not. I guess for practical purposes we can pretend that we have free will but even then it's hard to know what's in our control and what's not. Thoughts just popped into our head involuntarily for example. Is surely doesn't seem that we have control of our thoughts. And if we do it seems limited.

    • @CaraMyBeloved
      @CaraMyBeloved 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Even if limited, that part is already enough. Sure random thoughts pop up, emotions could influence our thoughts, and experiences too. But in the end, it's up to us to continue that, it's up to us to act on that thought, to make something of that thought. And that is enough.

If you're watching this video I think your real problem is that you're trying to be happy. Stop trying to be happy. Happiness is entirely unimportant and spending your life trying to be happy is a selfish waste of life and both ironically and deservingly, will more than likely result in you being unhappy. Instead focus on values that are actually important. If you don't know what that is, then that is the question to start with. What is actually important to you? What are you willing to struggle for? Focusing on whatever that is will yield a more fulfilling life, and maybe, happiness.

It seems like good advice, on the whole. I do have trouble with dividing things into what we control and what we don’t control, though, and it is this: both are relatively uncommon scenarios. Far more common are events that we INFLUENCE. Not with absolute certainty of outcome, as “control” suggests, but not with total ineffectualness either. We are neither all-powerful nor totally helpless, most of the time. Why subscribe to an artificial dichotomy?

To the world stoics seem unfeeling and apathetic because we're so pre-occupied cultivating our own inner ones. It's beautiful to know that other people share the same recognition that happiness isn't cultivated by what we accumulate but by the way in which we conduct ourselves and construct our character. The antithesis of modern Western values.

I accidently am following most of these things. But, I don't feel happy. I don't look like a happy person. But I am content.
Maybe contentment is what you need not hapiness.
I don't know guys please help me.

Actually Stoicism is not about happiness, I think Ryan Holiday frames it in this way to adress a broader audience.
Stoicism is the rejection of pleasure / happiness as ultimate sources of fulfillment; instead, it emphasizes the cultivation of inner virtues to achieve Eudaimonia (human flourishing / fullfilment)
Maybe it could be helpful for you reading the stoic books itself instead of watching TH-cam videos about it as the key message in most videos does not capture the key essence of the stoic school of thought.

I understand that you need to sell your products and I think its even good that you talk about them in EVERY video. But maybe just don't do it twice per video ? It's too much.
