“The man who has decided to be dutiful is at work. Constantly. Perpetually. Without regret. He seeks rest. Seeks tranquility. Seeks anonymity. That’s the grandest and the only fantasy he encourages, tolerates. Foolishly; but not unwisely. For he is fully aware that the only cosmic battle he must win is the one raging within.” (From Stoic Mosquito by A. A. Socrates)

Thank you for sharing your wisdom and the wisdom of Marcus Aurelius. One of the reasons stoicism spoke to me is because of my temper and frustrations with others. I get upset when people don't live up to the standards I think they should. It has been something I have struggled with for a long time. It always leads to tension and strife, both internal and external. The part after "Tolerant with others. Strict with yourself" is something I needed to hear. So once again, I thank you.

That’s because Marcus Aurelius only has 12 chapters in his book meditations. So Ryan only has a small well to draw from. And if you read it, he doesn’t have much solutions for things, he has alternatives to problems, not solutions.
Where is the school of stoics today? Buddhist have over 1 million temples, Hindus have close to a billion shrines, Muslims have over 500 million mosques, Christian’s have over a billion churches, where is the school of philosophies for stoics?
No where, at best the most similar academic places are colleges, not even 10,000 colleges in the USA or Europe or India or Africa, and that’s an academic thing, not a stoicism foundation.
Stoics never made it into a religion, because it never worked, even the creators of their ideologies ditched it, the Roman’s went for Christianity, this is mentioned in the Bible in the book of acts, Paul contends with stoics and epicureans, in Athens, collossa, Thessalonians, Roman’s and more, and he converts them, they tried debating with him, with philosophers, but Paul carried the scriptures of the abrahamic statutes and commandments given by all the former prophets, Solomon, Moses, David, Job, isiah, Jesus etc. this is why Europe today is mostly Christian not stoic philosophers.
Stoics were literally stupid and idiots. Literally.

@@connorstar164 You're comparing apples and oranges, friend. Philosophy is not religion. Philosophy is the handmaiden of religion.
Old Hellenism involved a state or ethnic religion, one or more Mystery religions and any number of schools of philosophies. For Rome before Christianity, Sol Invictus was the state religion/imperial cult, while the Mysteries of Eleusis, Mithras and even Christ were celebrated (look up the disciplina arcani). Around the time of late Stoicism, you also had what we call today Neoplatonism and Neopythagoreanism running amok.
The purpose of philosophy at that time was to assist people in their daily lives with practical notions, just as the imperial cult was to ensure the prosperity of the Empire, and the Mysteries were there for people who wanted to understand the higher aspects of life, especially the spiritual.
Stoicism was never designed to take the place of religion. It was designed to help it.
Which is why you can find a lot in common, or not much contention, between Stoicism and both modern Catholic practises as well as modern Buddhist practises.
You can be an atheist and still practise Stoicism. Same goes for Catholics and Buddhists.

Seneca, another stoic committed suicide, that’s a failure…
      Mamercus Aemilius Scaurus
      Lucius Annius Vinicianus
      Lucius Antistius Vetus
      Antonia Minor
      Mark Antony
      Apicata
All Roman stoics, all suicide. That’s a failure….
      Barea Soranus
      Gaius Blossius
      Bonosus (usurper)
      Aulus Caecina Paetus
      Ovius and Novius Calavius
      Gaius Calpurnius Piso (conspirator)
      Gnaeus Calpurnius Piso
      Gaius Calvisius Sabinus
All epicurean and stoic philosophers, all suicide, we can name over 100+ philosophers from Rome that committed suicide by the tens of thousands, because of their ideologies of rebel, from agnostic to atheist, we don’t see that in the abrahamic religion, which we serve God, suicide is forbidden, from judicial, Christianity to Islam.
Yet like modern atheist, they have whack ideologies, evolution, big bang, and some man made bullshit never proven, pew research along with World Health Organization and national institutes of health, show that atheist commit suicide 10x more than all the 5 major religions in the world, that is a failure.
Mock all you want. And soon all of stoicism people are taking the same path, while we spiritual and religious gain life, you morons tout you don’t fear death yet are the first to commit suicide. 😂 Go on with ya clown.

    Dear Ryan Holiday,
I'm a fan. So I speak with love.
I know that you are prepared for death.
But I wish that you had read more history books.
Lately, when I've watched your videos, you're all about how to optimize a limited lifespan.
I mean that's all well and great, and more power to you if you're trying to appeal to the hyper vigilant that feel that they are somebody.
If, you're all about that, then go be you.
Just that I believe that there is true great wisdom in you.
Account for the 12,000 generations that came before you.
What has their anxiousness about the shortage of life wrought them?
Be bigger than the money that you are chasing.
    Stop being important.
    Just be you.
The Ryan Holiday that is greater than the sum total of mankind.
The Ryan Holiday is far, far, far greater than Robert Greene.
Be that Ryan Holiday, then I'll believe you.

All philosophies are man made, especially the religious ones. That's the correct definition; man made, not God made.
All life leads to death, yours and mine. One day you will be dead. The rest of the days, you are not. To think otherwise is delusional. What you choose to do with those days, God has already told you what to do. God has already provided you the tools to live a good life including creating men such as the Stoics to teach you that.

Ha ha, Stoics rebelled against God, Marcus was an agnostic, he says in his book of meditation, if the Gods are good, they should be praised, if they are bad they should be disregarded. That’s agnosticism, not a man of faith. David never doubted god and is why we all turn to the Bible not some idiot philosophers.
Seneca and Epicurus both stated not even Zeus can take away my free will. All the prophets like Samuel stated it was better to obey than sacrifice. Marcus Aurelius has only 12 chapters in his book meditations, that only covers eithics he was limited. While David has 150 chapters in his book psalms, he went through more experiences and unlike stoics who gave you alternatives the prophets gave solutions by God.
You are clueless, the Bible has over 2 billion followers, how many people follow stoicism? No where. It never made it into a religion because they don’t work. Religions which by definition of the Greek word, religio, means to bind, to latch onto, means it works. All the stoics and epicureans through out time, committed suicide, yet all the abrahamic religions from Judaism, Christianity and Islam served God given laws, commandments and statutes by the prophets like Moses, Abraham, David, Solomon, all the way to Jesus.
Over a billlion churches world wide because of this, you can’t even name 10,000 schools of stoicism, because philosophies are man made moron, religions are knowledge and wisdom given by higher powers.
Go read a book for once.

    • @Tranquil1962
      @Tranquil1962 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

You may want to reassess who is the idiot.
Religion is an entirely man made construct. Whilst there are elements of virtue in them (and I would argue even that is diminishing, some of your evangelists seem driven by wealth not charity) at least in the early days, it was all about control.
Finally whether you agree with stoics or not, these are some of the world's great thinkers. Before social media, tv etc and we are still remembering then.
What will society know of you in only 100 years?

    • @WideAwakeHuman
      @WideAwakeHuman 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

You sound like a Christian that also thinks “science” is bad and you can learn everything about the world from the Bible. When in reality, Christianity is totally compatible with both science and the ideas of stoicism.
      Don’t complain.
      Deny the flesh.
      Work hard.
Do the right thing no matter how you feel about it.
      Virtue is better than vice.
If u think the idea of stoicism are in opposition to Christianity you need to learn more about your religion and learn to take back from the world what originates with God in the first place.
