    This episode has one of my favourite lines from anything ever
    "I'm sorry to bother you at a time like his Mrs Twice. We would have come earlier but your husband wasn't dead then."

    No one ever went broke by underestimating the intelligence of their audience. Nowhere is this more apparent than here. This gem got cancelled after 6 episodes simply because the jokes went over people's heads. And it's only gotten worse since. A tragedy.

    • @tbd-1
      @tbd-1 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It wasn't just that. You actually had to _watch_ this show and people don't really _watch_ TV at home. Movies in a theater, yes. But at home with all the distractions, not so much.

    • @destendgem
      @destendgem ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Being cancelled wasn't all bad. The writers admitted that, at the time, they were running out of jokes.

      @@destendgem One imagines it is hard to keep up the quality of any show; especially comedies. Along this same genre, "Get Smart" did it well.

      I’m not surprised. They come at you awfully fast and most of these clips on TH-cam I’ve watched multiple times to really appreciate. This show was also filled with numerous tiny detail sight gags that are hard to pick up the first time (like the Police Squad sign on the door that is inverted, or the clocks that change strangely). Arrested Development faced the same hurdles and it always struggled to gain an audience.

      Not that the execs thought the audiences would be too stupid, the audience were too stupid. Ratings started out decently and declined quickly. The only reasonable answer is that this comedy required the audiences' attention which they were unwilling to give. Today's comedy has the standard setup and payoff. These guys used the shotgun blast approach. Even if you're paying attention, you probably missed something anyhow.

      Mine too. The lame act and the bit where he goes around the audience talking to the punters. When he asks where they are from he always says 'hey, that's my home town!' regardless of where they say. Then he answers the last one with 'hey, that's YOUR home town!'. It kills me every time.

    I recently read James Doohan's memoir, "Beam Me Up Scotty". In it he mentions how, as a young actor just starting out on the stage in New York City, she shared his apartment with another young actor, none other then Leslie Nielsen. Later, when Doohan relocated to the Los Angeles area to work on films and TV shows, he stayed for a while with Nielsen and his wife in their home, Leslie having moved out earlier. The thing Doohan says about Nielsen is that he was always a very funny guy, a real live wire, lots of practical jokes, funny sayings, joking around, a very comic sensibility and tendency. Seems that Nielsen was somewhat typecast as a serious actor on account of his voice and appearance, not because of his innate personality or comic tendencies.
    Reminds me of other actors who started out doing one kind of thing, then becoming famous for something very different and doing ONLY that for a long time, before finally having enough clout (or just time passing) to get back to roles that suited their actual training and background. A couple actors who come to mind are singers and/or dancers who became known as tough guys, and only resumed doing their original schtick again later in their careers, High Jackman, Christopher Walken, etc.

      You just hit the nail on the head on why it was ultimately canceled after just a few shows. Evidently, American audiences at the time had to “work” to enjoy the show. They had to pay full attention at the sight gags and dialogue, otherwise it was just blah.
