      Even worse when you're carrying around 99 phoenix feathers or whatever that can literally bring people back to life after they were chewed up by a machine and then exploded, so it's literally impossible to not save someone; but the writers want them dead so they're just dead. 😡

      I dunno. In games it's either invincible adamantium glass or complete rice paper. Depends on if you are watching someone dying or throwing them through it

    • @TinKnight
      @TinKnight 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Polycarbonate is remarkably resilient & nearly impossible to shatter, even when paper thin, & is relatively cheap (I did my floor-to-ceiling family room windows for around $300 inc shipping & custom framing). When 3/4" thick, it's bulletproof, but still has the light transmission of glass (granted, we're talking pistols & resistance to single rifle shots rather than full automatic rifle/machine gun fire, but still)...and the very high cost would be nothing for a high security area.
      Just because something looks like glass doesn't mean it's glass.

    This trope has been used so many times, that now I want to see a game make the setup, but it is later in the game, when your character can break glass. Then there are two ways you can go: think that the glass cannot be broken because of the trope, don't try and watch the person die; or, realize your character is in fact strong enough to break the glass, do so, and save the person.

    • @EGRJ
      @EGRJ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      It would be even better if they play it straight the first time, but by the second time you've explicitly gotten strong enough to break the "reinforced" glass. Then the smirking bad guy gets up close, to taunt you.
      Then the QTE button appears.
      You can ignore it, but that just means your character grabs the bad guy after they turn away, to make it even more brutal.

    I don't know if I would call Sophia Lamb's death a "tragedy", considering [SPOILER ALERT] she is the big baddie of Bioshock 2, mind-controlled you into shooting yourself in front of your daughter at the start of the game, tried to brainwash Eleanor for years, AND tried to smother her with a pillow when she refused to obey her ... oh, and the whole "trying to take over the world and end Human existence as we know it through some kind of assimiliation plot" thing, too. Sure, she IS some kind of mother figure to Eleanor, however twisted, but ...
    *suddenly remembers that her death is the prelude to Eleanor going full-throttle evil and being unleashed upon the surface world with superpowers and technology far ahead of the rest of the world*
    Oh, nevermind. I see it now.

    • @docette2015
      @docette2015 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Good point about that, but I think the ACTUAL moment the commenter in the first one was referring to was, in fact, Eleanor nearly being smothered because THAT happens behind glass too if I remember correctly, and I think the commenter just mixed up the names. It would make a LOT more sense because Eleanor is who Delta has been chasing this entire time, and you come SO CLOSE to reuniting -- and then Sophia pulls that, and the endgame starts with you learning you're inevitably going to die. Oof.

      For casual Star Wars fans, probably Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II - Mysteries of the Sith, where *SPOILERS*
      To finally beat the otherwise unstoppable and Dark Side-corrupted Kyle "Forcedamned" Katarn in the endgame, you (as Mara Jade, future wife to Luke Skywalker in the Legends continuity) have to accept being one with the Force (in short, death) all while hoping that her corrupted Master snaps out of his Dark Side reverie and spare her... suffice to say, she succeeds.
      To lore veterans, such acceptance was already done by other characters such as Ulic Qel-Droma from the Tales of the Jedi comics, Obi-Wan Kenobi from Ep. IV, and even Cal Kestis during his final confrontation with the Jaro Tapal apparition in Dathomir from Jedi: Fallen Order, so it wasn't hard for them to figure it out.

      A lot of comments about how you were weakened by a bomb, but this was before that in a part of the game where you just solo'd two big sisters at the same time, is fully decked out with gatlings n' guns n' grenades, and likely wielding every plasmid the game has to offer in their fully upgraded form (not to mention said power drill that we've seen go pretty deep into solid metal and also used to smash through barriers of concrete rubble).
      But shattering a door that was never meant to stop anything other than air? That's just asking too much.

    I can think of one example of the reverse to this situation - Arkham Knight, where you get into a room to rescue someone just as the main bad guy goons show up but can't attack you because you're protected by thick glass.
    they also can't stop you from remotely activating the cannon on the Batmobile conveniently located behind them.

    Said scenario is the death of a young girl with yellow pigtails who is left outside in the rain and killed by Purple Guy, the villain found throughout the series, while you watch on as either a robot serving food or as the robot who is supposed to keep the young girl safe. I'm not sure if it counts since it's in two minigames, but I think, personally, that it's a behind-glass tragedy that needs to be mentioned.

    I don't think you guys or Oxbox have done an episode themed around this- But I was thinking an interesting list to make would be problematic favorite characters in games- Either NPCs, PCs or Protagonists that do countless horrible things as canon in the story, but are still beloved by the fan base regardless. My biggest example of this is the Raiden Shogun or Ei from Genshin Impact. She not only is a tyrant god who keeps her entire nation in a perpetual loop of eternity, but also left a soulless puppet to carry out that fate for her nation for her while she just lives inside her own consciousness in her dead twin sister's sword. Yes, she does eventually acknowledge her wrong doing, but that only comes after 500 years of ignoring her people and nation entirely- Overcome by grief and sadness so bad that I think she needs to see around 7 separate therapists for. People love her though because she pulls a sword from her bossom and has a real 'Step on me Mommy' air about her. (While I don't really buy into it one bit to be honest)

    Such as the glass window on on ONE section on the G.F.S. Olympus in Metroid Corruption. Were an explosion breaks the glass and sends soldiers flying out into space where as shooting the glass literally anywhere else on the ship prevents you from spacing your self.
    Or the glass on parts of the Sprawl in dead space 2. Most windows are super strong. Some can be broken resulting in Issac loosing a few limbs. Unlike all other glass planes that won't break even when a space ship crashes next to it.

    I sure can think of some more examples...
    An old PC game Descent has you piloting a spacecraft with a glass cockpit throughout various levels as crazed robots start killing people. Each level has hostages behind destroyable doors. One level in particular has some crazed robots in the hostage area and if you arent quick enough to destroy the door or poorly managed your ammo energy and run out your have to watch as it murders the hostages.
    Dead Space has several examples the first scene especially if your rushing, has a lobby area a necromorph drops in on your buddies after you move through a door. If you hang around and turn around you can see the necromorph murder some crew while they plead for someone to save them. Theres another scene i think in chapter 4 just before or just after the hydroponics bay where you find a crew member in a chair sitting but sadly the mutant plant or necromorph murders him splattering him on the glass.
    Re2 or re3 remake has a scene where you can see a little more of what happened in the garden area the mutant plant zombies appear in and see the fate of the poor scientist smooshed against the glass that you get the keycard from.
    Resident Evil Revelations has a scene or two where the npc agent in the orange uniform the one that becomes a recurring boss is attacked by a creature and appears dead and theres not a thing you can do about it.
    I think re4 has a scene in the science lab late where your introduced to regenerators which if you could kill it maybe just maybe you wouldnt have to fight it.
    Re5 also has the scene on the ship where you are stopped by glass as wesker injects the virus into excella maybe you could have saved her if you shit wesker.
    Prey remake also has one in the beginning where the mimic murders the lab assistants when you do the physical.
    Duke Nukem 3d has a scene in the 1st act 3rd level where aliens open up a curtain and watch you get electrocuted if you domt escape the chair quick enough the first act 2 level towards the end before the final area is a little bar area that has a normal human woman just chilling as you explore the bar for a key in a cupboard the cupboard locks behind you briefly if you dont get out quick the pig cops will kill the human
    Im sure there are more but those are all i can think of.
