  • Hello guys and what a beautiful day this was for another bus journey! The latest one in my quest to find Britain's Best Bus Routes and recommended to me by friend and supporter of the channel Walter Fillingham.
This trip sees me boarding the Stagecoach X7 Coastrider service as it heads out from Aberdeen all the way down the east coast to Dundee. We call at some lovely towns like Stonehaven and Montrose with some spectacular sea views from high up at the front of the bus.
I'll show you the interior of the bus, the scenery, how much it costs and we'll also see how that compares to the train. As always guys, your comments are most welcome!
Many thanks for taking the time to watch my videos. Your support is massively appreciated and it enables me to make more content like this for you all to enjoy.
    Cheers for now.
    Mark

Ahhh wonderful to see my patch on your video :) And you get extra points for giving Montrose the win over Arbroath :D The North Water Viaduct you crossed coming into Montrose hasn't seen a passenger train since the 1950s, but is now nice for a walk/cycle. Great to see Stonehaven as well where I went to school. Well worth a stop in future for the harbour and Dunnottar Castle, both of which are connected by an awesome coastal path via the War Memorial. Anyway, great video, can't believe I live here and you've beaten me to the X7! (which I've only had the pleasure of as far as Stoney)

Cheers Steve, I detected a bit of rivalry there between Montrose and Arbroath! That’s like Shrewsbury Vs Telford down by me tbh (Shrewsbury’s much nicer btw 😉). All-in-all, that whole coastline looks a) a lovely place to live and b) well connected by bus or rail. With the Northlink plus decent connectivity from ABZ, what more do you need!

Its funny I was just mentioning you in a comment and then I noticed right below my post there was you here !
Arbroath is clearly the lesser place to live in and visit. There's not really a reason to visit t.b.h. Although as a kid I used to love going to the little sea side amusement park.
The mention that Arbroath has such a larger population surprised me and I wonder how recent the figure is and what it includes. I was under the impression that Arbroath had declined while Montrose had expanded. There's certainly more to Montrose for both living in and visiting. Perhaps the biggest thing Arbroath is known for is the 45 Royal Marines base but that is a much smaller operation then it used to be.
Historically there is the significance of The Declaration of Arbroath. I believe ( c.m.i.i.wrong ) the Stone of Destiny used to be here and Scottish kings were crowned on it. Watch the film Stone of Destiny ( feat.Robert Carlisle ) for an entertaining take on the true story of the stone being nicked back from Westminster Abbey in the 1950's. There's a terrific song in Gaelic about it too, called Oran Na Cloiche ( Kathleen MacInnes and also the band Manran have versions to try ).
I believe the X7 goes all the way to Perth Infirmary - a long tortuous journey ! Compare it to the train journey time and it seems crazy. Not sure if it still does that, or maybe just goes to Dundee.

Just back from the X7 Coastrider after 13 hours on the buses FULLY based on the TH-cam above. The 0700 bus from Paisley, 0740 direct bus from Glasgow to Aberdeen, the 1105 X7 to Dundee, a short bus to St Andrews and X60 to Edinburgh and the usual buses back to Glasgow and Paisley again. I agree with everything in this TH-cam. If based in the central belt, I would add on the St Andrews and the X60 bus. Excellent addition and I am sure Vloggers will give this route the attention it deserves. Thanx to the TH-cam video for making this such a great day.

Montrose is nowadays home to fellow travel TH-camr, Steve Marsh.
The train option is if anything more scenic and a lot quicker. I think few take it for a longer journey and I wasn't surprised the front two got off at Stonehaven. That said, in Scotland once you are 60 you get free bus travel, so then between train or bus the latter often wins.

You are correct Arbroath is a dump now. I was born & grew up there from 1949 & with a few years moving around with the RAF have ended up back here. The town's hay days were from the 1950s to the 1970s after that the place just died. There used to be a lot of medium industry with Mills & Factories & 2 very busy boat yards. We had a massive outdoor swimming pool just past Gayfield & yes it is the nearest football ground to the sea it's also the windiest & coldest. We're also famous for the Abbey where King Robert the Bruce & his nobles signed the Scottish Declaration of Independence. If you want to learn more just let me know. I've travelled that road from Aberdeen to Arbroath many many times over the years.
I've enjoyed my afternoon with you journeying around Scotland & lucky enough to have visited everywhere you've been & then some as well as a lot of places in England & Wales. Thanks for making these vids.

The viaduct seen before Montrose as already pointed out is the "North Water" viaduct of the Bervie (Inverbervie) railway, a 12 mile coastal light railway opened in 1869, closed to passengers in 1951, and freight in 1966. On the road from Inverbervie to Montrose remains of the railway can be spotted easily on the left hand side of the road (It is worth getting off at St Cyrus for the magnificent long beach there). The history of the railway is complicated and was seen as a potential route to Aberdeen by the North British. The railway from Bervie later terminated at Montrose station. The portion from Montrose to just before St Cyrus is part of a pathway/national cycle route and is recommended. 🙂

I was on the X7 yesterday. Most of the old vehicles have now gone and been replaced with standard inter urban double deck coaches of exactly the same type as Stagecoach contribute to the pool for the Megabus/City link ABZ to GLA and EDI service. But note that both yesterday and today at least one single deck bus was on an all day diagram. I let that go to travel on the next decker duty.

Lovely trip Mark. I have never travelled the route by bus but often the slow route is the more scenic. CityLink / WestCoastMotors service Glasgow to Campbeltown is a scenic route. A return journey could be flying back to Glasgow. Steve Marsh has a video of that. Or you could get the CalMac ferry back to Ardrossan (Summer only). Arbroath has interesting Abbey ruins and is associated with the Declaration of Arbroath, written there in 1320 before being sent off to Pope John XXII.

The Stagecoach East Scotland dayrider (just about a fiver more than the single) is INSANE value for money; unlimited travel on a full network with express routes all operated by coaches (including the X7 in its entirety) connecting many towns and cities. Yes, you can travel from Aberdeen to Glasgow or Edinburgh (change at Halbeath P&R) and back, exploring the towns and cities along the way, for just that £15 day ticket bought from the driver!

As a stagecoach mechanic (not up north) the issue with the usb is there is no indicators when inspecting to see if they’re functional or not, and there isn’t the time, or equipment to test each one individually. Not great on a journey like this, more of a minor annoyance while around town
