  • Hello everyone! Thanks for joining me again as I take one of the longest bus rides in Britain (let me know if there are any others you would recommend). I'm going all the way from Leeds across to Whitby on the east coast of England on a three-and-a-half hour, 84 mile trip on the top deck of the Coastliner 840 bus!
On this epic journey, I'll show you the interior of the bus, some fantastic scenery and I'll tell you how much I paid. And here's a thing - it was a total bargain at the time of recording!
Many thanks as always guys for taking the time to watch my videos. All likes, comments, subs are massively appreciated and it really encourages me to carry on making more content for you all to enjoy.
    Cheers for now.
    Mark

The return route was even longer in the late 1990s when single decker buses were used as the 840 diverted across from Malton to Castle Howard and through the arches. The departure from Whitby at the time was 14.50 to arrive at Leeds at 18.20.

As a regular Coastliner customer between Tadcaster and York its nice to see the Coastliner getting a good airing . Its a fantastic fantastic service around the Yorkshire area. Just by way of a little bit of extra info they tell me that the drivers will drop you off anywhere and pick you up anywhere i.e. not necessarily at a bus stop if you do like walking but please enquire first

Wow! - You've just brought back some super memories of when I was a young airman stationed at RAF Fylingdales in the late 1960's. On weekend leave I flagged down this bus at the end of the approach drive for the journey to Leeds and then by train to Bradford. As I remember in those days it was a Single Decker and seemed to run whatever the weather!

That looks brilliant. Travel for the scenery and the relaxing pleasure of the journey.
It shouldn't always be about rushing to a destination and stressing about red lights and traffic jams.
Chill out and enjoy the ride. I will definitely try to take these English bus trips when I have sufficient time off work. Loved it. 👍🙂

Living in York you were in my sort of stamping ground but also Whitby as I work as a volunteer on the North Yorks Moors Railway. Ill be on duty and in Whitby on Saturday. If you want to see the moors from a different perspective take a trip from Pickering to Whitby on our heritage steam railway. I don't think you would be disappointed

The train routes are also brilliant. Along the secluded Esk Valley from Battersby and Middlesbrough, or the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway from Maldon. And the bus routes along the coast to Scarborough or Saltburn also look potentially scenic. The idea of basing oneself in Whitby and doing some circular trips feels very appealing!

Another of those routes which can be a scenic circular trip by bus in one direction and train (the North York Moors Railway) in the other. Totally different outlook as the train goes through the valley and the bus is on top of the moors, extra good views from a double decker!

My family used to take that bus into Whitby from Leeds in the early 2000s, it never seemed to take that long, probably because of how beautiful it was coming over the moors.
I'm not sure if still does, but when we did it, the bus stopped for about 10-15 minutes in Malton allowing a quick loo break.

  • @DaveinLeeds
    @DaveinLeeds 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It's a long journey without a loo! However, I used to work for Traveline in Leeds and we were told that facilities were available for passengers to use at Malton, where the bus had a short break. Talking about other scenic routes, the 555 from Lancaster to Keswick is pretty famous and worth a look at if you haven't already done so. If you have a day or two in Keswick, you could have a look at the 77/77a Buttermere circulars which run from about April to October.

This has encouraged me to jump on that 840 next time we are in York (we live down south) and being of a certain age, the bus would be free! Years or decades ago in the early years of Coastliner (using coaches and assorted vehicles) there was always time at Malton for passengers to go to the toilet, as they either changed drivers there or at least gave the driver a short break. Unless a toilet stop is guaranteed, I think many people would be unable to make the complete journey from Leeds. Fantastic scenery of course! I do miss the 'golf balls' - pyramids are not the same!

Did the Coastliner back in June 2021 at the tail end of the 'Covid restrictions' period.
Seem to recall that at this point there wasn't a through service from Leeds to Whitby. Remember going on a through service from Leeds to Scarborough, catching a separate bus from there to Whitby and then doing Whitby back to Leeds via Malton.
Pretty sure I was the only passenger who went all the way from Leeds to Scarborough on that trip too.

One of my favourite trips on the bus, the vehicles and drivers are superb and the views stunning. Having a bus journey of over an hour to and from Leeds in addition to this trip meant I did ache a lot through stiffness but I overcame this by a pleasant drive to Tadcaster in my car and caught the bus from there. I have a pensioners bus pass which gives me free travel but can only use after 9:30, so this approach makes better use of the day. I agree that the new Witchway buses from Burnley are in a different class to almost any other bus on the road, I respect Transdev for investing in high quality vehicles and it upsets me when a small minority of passengers go out of their way to spoil the experience for others by leaving rubbish, bottles and cans on the floor and seats, makes you wonder what they live like at home.

A little note about the toilets in Leeds Bus Station. As the station is open 24 hours a day, and the station not being in the best part of the city, homeless people and heroin users used to frequent it. Until recently it was free to use, but they had no lighting, except for neon strip lights, which I hear make it hard for people injecting, to find a vein.

Great video, we used the service between Malton and Goathland as the last leg of a journey from Poole by train to meet up with friends for a birthday celebration a few years ago, complete with dog! sadly we didn't have your weather, it chucked it down! We stayed at the Goathland Hotel aka Aidenfield Arms!
Nearer to home you might want to think about some of the TrawsCymru routes, we've done Wrexham-Dolgellau and Caernarfon-Porthmadog

Have travelled on that front upstairs seat too with my grandaughter, what a great ride!! Will add if you turn up in a weekend morning in the summer you can meet a very long queue of pensioners off to the coast on their bus passes...and..not even get on the bus ! Luckily they seem to put extra ones on !

Great ride. I was born in Scarborough and when based in Malton, worked in the triangle of Malton-Whitby-Scarborough in the late 70s - early 80s. I then got transferred to York and my area became the Yorkshire Dales. But that area is always special to me.
It has been many a long year since I have been up that way. I still have family and friends in the area. Time to plan a flight back home I think!
Just a small point. The village of Ruswarp is actually pronounced "ruzzup" by the locals.

I did that 2 weeks ago but just from Thornton le Dale to Whitby which happens to be the nice section.I was lucky I got to Thornton le Dale expecting a 1 and a half hour wait for the bus but as I sat near the bus stop eating my jacket potato the 11:38 came in running 50 minutes late,a pleasant surprise and people always moan but never say anything when a delay works in your favour! The last time I did that trip was in about 1984 when it was run by the main north east National Bus Company subsidiary, United, and it only went as far as Malton.

Much of your trip is just as I remember mine in Sept.2018, although I detected a diversion from the route as I took it. My morning service from York called at Castle Howard and went directly from Malton to Pickering (not Thornton-le-Dale). I rode the NYM Railway from Whitby to Pickering (stopping over, of course, at Goathland for an ale at "The Aidensfield Alms" and a stroll through the village with photos at various "Heartbeat" locations), then took a return 840 service from Pickering back to York. A great day out!🙂🙂🙂

Totally agree that the B3 Brontë bus journey is scenic and breathtaking. I took the journey earlier this year and it was brilliant.
I also thoroughly recommend the bus roundtrip on the K14 from Keighley to Oxenhope and back to Keighley. Stunning countryside, narrow roads, steep inclines and descents, and twisty roads. The bus is one of those shophoppa type buses - totally fab! 😊
You can do it all in one day - just get the West Yorkshire bus day ticket for £4.50 (on any West Yorkshire bus) and zoom around to your heart's content!

Another route I have done many times (or the first section at least). Transdev do have really good buses, another example being the 36 which was next to your bus in Leeds bus station. The 36 was also shortlisted in that 2018 competition for most scenic bus route (granted its not quite as scenic as the 840). Transdev's fully electric buses in Harrogate are also quite unique if far less scenic. The 'DalesBus' routes are also quite a selection of scenic routes going in and out of the Yorkshire Dales.
